• Handy Generic JQuery Functions

  I was a bit of a late-comer to the JQuery party, but now I've been using it for a while it's given me a host of options for adding extra flair to the client side of my applications. Here's a few generic JQuery functions I've written which can be used to add some neat little features to a page. Just call any of them from a document ready function. Apply JQuery Themeroller Styles to all Page Buttons   The JQuery Themeroller is a great tool for creating a theme for a site based on colours and styles for particular page elements. The JQuery.UI library then provides a set of functions which allow you to apply styles to page elements. This function applies a JQuery Themeroller style to all the buttons on a page - as well as any elements which have a button class applied to them - and then makes the mouse pointer turn into a cursor when you mouse over them: function addCursorPointerToButtons() {     $("button, input[type='submit'], input[type='button'], .button") .button().css("cursor", "pointer"); } Automatically Remove the Default Value from a Select Box   Required drop-down select boxes often have a default option which reads 'Please select...' (or something like that), but once someone has selected a value, there's no need to retain that. This function removes the default option from any select boxes on the page which have a data-val-remove-default attribute once one of the non-default options has been chosen: function removeDefaultSelectOptionOnSelect() {     $("select[data-val-remove-default='']").change(function () {         var sel = $(this);         if (sel.val() != "") { sel.children("option[value='']:first").remove(); }     }); } Automatically add a Required Label and Stars to a Form   It's pretty standard to have a little * next to required form field elements.   I'm in the process of learning Scala and I came across a scenario today where I need to map multiple functions over a single piece of data and wondered if there was a formal name for this. It sort of feels like the inverse of map. I'm not sure this is the correct way of expressing it, but this is what I did: dmap(x: Object, fns: List[Function]) = fns.map(_(x)) Is there a built in way to do something similar? Is there a formal name for this function?

• Can I get some help on a javascript project?

  I'm learning javascript and I thought it would be fun to build a "simple" calculator. I spent a few hours coding, and implementing the functions, but it only works partially. Can one of you look at my code and try and figure out what's wrong? The Calculator.zip Here's some explanation of the issues: the add(), subtract(), multiply(), and divide() methods work partially, not at all, or don't do as they're supposed to.. sometimes the 0 wont clear when the replaceDisplay() method evaluates the screen. If it helps, I'm also using jquery, so keep that in mind. Thank you!

• How can I force Javascript garbage collection in IE? IE is acting very slow after AJAX calls & DOM

  I have a page with chained drop-downs. Choosing an option from the first select populates the second, and choosing an option from the second select returns a table of matching results using the innerHtml function on an empty div on the page. The problem is, once I've made my selections and a considerable amount of data is brought onto the page, all subsequent Javascript on the page runs exceptionally slowly. It seems as if all the data I pulled back via AJAX to populate the div is still hogging a lot of memory. I tried setting the return object which contains the AJAX results to null after calling innerHtml but with no luck. Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera all show no performance degradation when I use Javascript to insert a lot of data into the DOM, but in IE it is very apparent. To test that it's a Javascript/DOM issue rather than a plain old IE issue, I created a version of the page that returns all the results on the initial load, rather than via AJAX/Javascript, and found IE had no performance problems. FYI, I'm using jQuery's jQuery.get method to execute the AJAX call. • Force Postback from code behind? Or reload JavaScript from an Asynchronous Postback?

  Hi all, I've got a Jquery UI dialog that pops up to confirm the creation of an item after filling out a form. I have the form in an update panel due to various needs of the form, and especially because I want validation being done on the form without reloading the page. JavaScript appears to not reload on an asynchronoous postback. This means when the form is a success and I change the variable 'formSubmitPass' to true, it does not get passed to the Javascript via <%= formSubmitPass %. If I add a trigger to the submit button to do a full postback, it works. However I don't want the submit button to do a full postback as I said so I can validate the form within the update panel. How can I have this so my form validates asynchronously, but my javaScript will properly reload when the form is completed successfully and the item is saved to the database? Edit: I change formSubmitPass at the very end of the code behind: If errorCount = 0 Then formSubmitPass = True upForm.Update() Else formSubmitPass = False End If So on a full postback, the value does change.

• 403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

  I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. As you can see the string above is encodes due to anti XSS. This link works in FF and IE6 but IE8 is transmitting the URL Parameter as character with code 65*** (don't know the exaxt value). In the opening window you will only see a square (because character with 65000+ is not printable). It starts with a demand note for the name and the second name, after this it generates a pdf-file. But when adding the imageLoad-Method there is no pdf-file generated. Does anyone konws how to solve this problem?

  I have a form with an ever-growing amount of associated javascript. At present this javascript lives in my form view which is fine, but it's getting larger and starting to overwhelm the form making it difficult to work on the form. I want to put this in a separate file in my /public/javascripts directory but a lot of the javascript is generated by embedded ruby. This embedded ruby is ignored and passed through to the browser if I just put the code here. What is the best way (if any) of having this embedded ruby executed and the javascript being generated in the same way as if it were in my view?

• Which Javascript framework (jQuery vs Dojo vs ... )?

  There are a few Javascript frameworks/toolets out there, such as: jQuery; Dojo; Prototype; YUI; MooTools; ExtJS; SmartClient; and others I'm sure. It certainly seems that jQuery is ascendant in terms of mindshare at the moment. For example, Microsoft (ASP.NET MVC) and Nokia will use it. I also found this this performance comparison of Dojo, jQuery, MooTools and Prototype (Edit: Updated Comparison), which looks highly favourable to Dojo and jQuery. Now my previous experience with Javascript has been the old school HTML + Javascript most of us have done and RIA frameworks like Google Web Toolkit ("GWT") and Ext-GWT, which were a fairly low-stress entry into the Ajax world for someone from a Java background, such as myself. But, after all this, I find myself leaning towards the more PHP + Ajax type solution, which just seems that much more lightweight. So I've been looking into jQuery and I really like it's use of commands, the use of fluent interfaces and method chaining, it's cross-browser CSS selector superset, the fact that it's lightweight and extensible, the brevity of the syntax, unobtrusive Javascript and the plug-in framework. Now obviously many of these aren't unique to jQuery but on the basis that some things are greater than their sum of parts, it just seems that it all fits together and works well. So jQuery seems to have a lot going for it and it looks to the frontrunner for what I choose to concentrate on. Is there anything else I should be aware of or any particular reasons not to choose it or to choose something else? EDIT: Just wanted to add this trend comparison of Javascript frameworks.

I just learned that some user disable javascript on their browser (I didn't even know that was possible and/or necessary). Now, here's my question: What happens to my web application if a user disable Javascript? For instance, I'd like to display some screens using Ajax and commands such as 'InsertBefore' to bring in live a DIV that will display the result. So, if Javascript is disabled, I wonder what going to happen to all this work that relies on Javascript? I'm kind of lost. Thanks for helping

• Are there any drawbacks to class-based Javascript injection?

  A phenomena I'm seeing more and more of is Javascript code that is tied to a particular element on a particular page, rather than being tied to kinds of elements or UI patterns. For example, say we had a couple of animated menus on a page: <ul id="top-navigation"> ... </ul> <!-- ... --> <ul id="product-list"> ... </ul> These two menus might exist on the same page or on different pages, and some pages mightn't have any menus. I'll often see Javascript code like this (for these examples, I'm using jQuery): $(document).ready(function() { $('ul#top-navigation').dropdownMenu(); $('ul#product-selector').dropdownMenu(); }); Notice the problem? The Javascript is tightly coupled to particular instances of a UI pattern rather than the UI pattern itself. Now wouldn't it be so much simpler (and cleaner) to do this instead? - $(document).ready(function() { $('ul.dropdown-menu').dropdownMenu(); }); Then we can put the 'dropdown-menu' class on our lists like so: <ul id="top-navigation" class="dropdown-menu"> ... </ul> <!-- ... --> <ul id="product-list" class="dropdown-menu"> ... </ul> This way of doing things would have the following benefits: Simpler Javascript - we only need to attach once to the class. We avoid looking for specific instances that mightn't exist on a given page. If we remove an element, we don't need to hunt through the Javascript to find the attach code for that element. I believe techniques similar to this were pioneered by certain articles on alistapart.com. I'm amazed these simple techniques still haven't gained widespread adoption, and I still see 'best-practice' code-samples and Javascript frameworks referring directly to UI instances rather than UI patterns. Is there any reason for this? Is there some big disadvantage to the technique I just described that I'm unaware of?

  I am working with a large website written in Ruby on Rails. Thanks to the support for REST in Rails 2, the site's business logic is all accessible via a consistent XML API. Now I want to be able to easily write one or more JavaScript frontends to the site that interact with the generated Rails XML API. Ideally, an automated wrapper for the API could be created in JavaScript, since this would minimize the effort required in writing XML processing code for the more than 500 API functions. How, then, can I automatically generate a wrapper around a given XML API in JavaScript so that it's more pleasant to work with? I've worked with solutions of this nature for Java that generate classes and methods to wrap an API, so my current thinking is that I want something of that nature for JavaScript. I'd be open to an alternative take on the problem, though.
