  • Using linked servers, OPENROWSET and OPENQUERY

    - by BuckWoody
SQL Server has a few mechanisms to reach out to another server (even another server type) and query data from within a Transact-SQL statement. Among them are a set of stored credentials and information (called a Linked Server), a statement that uses a linked server called called OPENQUERY, another called OPENROWSET, and one called OPENDATASOURCE. This post isn’t about those particular functions or statements – hit the links for more if you’re new to those topics. I’m actually more concerned about where I see these used than the particular method. In many cases, a Linked server isn’t another Relational Database Management System (RDMBS) like Oracle or DB2 (which is possible with a linked server), but another SQL Server. My concern is that linked servers are the new Data Transformation Services (DTS) from SQL Server 2000 – something that was designed for one purpose but which is being morphed into something much more. In the case of DTS, most of us turned that feature into a full-fledged job system. What was designed as a simple data import and export system has been pressed into service doing logic, routing and timing. And of course we all know how painful it was to move off of a complex DTS system onto SQL Server Integration Services. In the case of linked servers, what should be used as a method of running a simple query or two on another server where you have occasional connection or need a quick import of a small data set is morphing into a full federation strategy. In some cases I’ve seen a complex web of linked servers, and when credentials, names or anything else changes there are huge problems. Now don’t get me wrong – linked servers and other forms of distributing queries is a fantastic set of tools that we have to move data around. I’m just saying that when you start having lots of workarounds and when things get really complicated, you might want to step back a little and ask if there’s a better way. Are you able to tolerate some latency? Perhaps you’re able to use Service Broker. Would you like to be platform-independent on the data source? Perhaps a middle-tier might make more sense, abstracting the queries there and sending them to the proper server. Designed properly, I’ve seen these systems scale further and be more resilient than loading up on linked servers. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • Authenticating Linked Servers - SQL Server 8 to SQL Server 10

    - by jp2code
We have an old SQL Server 2000 database that has to be kept because it is needed on our manufacturing machines. It also maintains our employee records, since they are needed on these machines for employee logins. We also have a newer SQL Server 10 database (I think this is 2008, but I'm not sure) that we are using for newer development. I have recently learned (i.e. today) that I can link the two servers. This would allow me to access the employee tables in the newer server. Following the SF post SQL Server to SQL Server Linked Server Setup, I tried adding the link. In our SQL Server 2000 machine, I got this error: Similarly, on our SQL Server 10 machine, I got this error: The messages, though worded different, probably say the same thing: I need to authenticate, somehow. We have an Active Directory, but it is on yet another server. What, exactly, should be done here? A guy HERE<< said to check the Security settings, but did not say what else to do. Both servers are set to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode. Now what?

  • How do NTP Servers Manage to Stay so Accurate?

    - by Akemi Iwaya
Many of us have had the occasional problem with our computers and other devices retaining accurate time settings, but a quick sync with an NTP server makes all well again. But if our own devices can lose accuracy, how do NTP servers manage to stay so accurate? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. Photo courtesy of LEOL30 (Flickr). The Question SuperUser reader Frank Thornton wants to know how NTP servers are able to remain so accurate: I have noticed that on my servers and other machines, the clocks always drift so that they have to sync up to remain accurate. How do the NTP server clocks keep from drifting and always remain so accurate? How do the NTP servers manage to remain so accurate? The Answer SuperUser contributor Michael Kjorling has the answer for us: NTP servers rely on highly accurate clocks for precision timekeeping. A common time source for central NTP servers are atomic clocks, or GPS receivers (remember that GPS satellites have atomic clocks onboard). These clocks are defined as accurate since they provide a highly exact time reference. There is nothing magical about GPS or atomic clocks that make them tell you exactly what time it is. Because of how atomic clocks work, they are simply very good at, having once been told what time it is, keeping accurate time (since the second is defined in terms of atomic effects). In fact, it is worth noting that GPS time is distinct from the UTC that we are more used to seeing. These atomic clocks are in turn synchronized against International Atomic Time or TAI in order to not only accurately tell the passage of time, but also the time. Once you have an exact time on one system connected to a network like the Internet, it is a matter of protocol engineering enabling transfer of precise times between hosts over an unreliable network. In this regard a Stratum 2 (or farther from the actual time source) NTP server is no different from your desktop system syncing against a set of NTP servers. By the time you have a few accurate times (as obtained from NTP servers or elsewhere) and know the rate of advancement of your local clock (which is easy to determine), you can calculate your local clock’s drift rate relative to the “believed accurate” passage of time. Once locked in, this value can then be used to continuously adjust the local clock to make it report values very close to the accurate passage of time, even if the local real-time clock itself is highly inaccurate. As long as your local clock is not highly erratic, this should allow keeping accurate time for some time even if your upstream time source becomes unavailable for any reason. Some NTP client implementations (probably most ntpd daemon or system service implementations) do this, and others (like ntpd’s companion ntpdate which simply sets the clock once) do not. This is commonly referred to as a drift file because it persistently stores a measure of clock drift, but strictly speaking it does not have to be stored as a specific file on disk. In NTP, Stratum 0 is by definition an accurate time source. Stratum 1 is a system that uses a Stratum 0 time source as its time source (and is thus slightly less accurate than the Stratum 0 time source). Stratum 2 again is slightly less accurate than Stratum 1 because it is syncing its time against the Stratum 1 source and so on. In practice, this loss of accuracy is so small that it is completely negligible in all but the most extreme of cases. Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the comments. • TRY CATCH with Linked Server in SQL Server 2005 Not Working

    - by Robert Stanley
Hello, I am trying to catch sql error raised when I execute a stored procedure on a linked server. Both Servers are running SQL Server 2005. To prove the issue I have created a stored procedure on the linked server called Raise error that executes the following code: RAISERROR('An error', 16, 1); If I execute the stored procedure directly on the linked server using the following code I get a result set with 'An error', '16' as expected (ie the code enters the catch block): BEGIN TRY EXEC [dbo].[RaiseError]; END TRY BEGIN CATCH DECLARE @ErrMsg nvarchar(4000), @ErrSeverity int; SELECT @ErrMsg = ERROR_MESSAGE(), @ErrSeverity = ERROR_SEVERITY(); SELECT @ErrMsg, @ErrSeverity; END CATCH If I run the following code on my local server to execute the stored procedure on the linked server then SSMS gives me the message 'Query completed with errors', .Msg 50000, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RaiseError, Line 13 An error' BEGIN TRY EXEC [Server].[Catalog].[dbo].RaiseError END TRY BEGIN CATCH DECLARE @SPErrMsg nvarchar(4000), @SPErrSeverity int; SELECT @SPErrMsg = ERROR_MESSAGE(), @SPErrSeverity = ERROR_SEVERITY(); SELECT @SPErrMsg, @SPErrSeverity; END CATCH My Question is can I catch the error generated when the Linked server stored procedure executes? Thanks in advance!

  • Create a mirrored linked list in Java

    - by glacier89
Linked-List: Mirror Consider the following private class for a node of a singly-linked list of integers: private class Node{ public int value; public Node next; } A wrapper-class, called, ListImpl, contains a pointer, called start to the first node of a linked list of Node. Write an instance-method for ListImpl with the signature: public void mirror(); That makes a reversed copy of the linked-list pointed to by start and appends that copy to the end of the list. So, for example the list: start 1 2 3 after a call to mirror, becomes: start 1 2 3 3 2 1 Note: in your answer you do not need to dene the rest of the class for ListImpl just the mirror method.

  • Reverse a singly linked list

    - by Madhan
I would be wondered if there exists some logic to reverse the linked list using only two pointers. The following is used to reverse the single linked list using three pointers namely p, q, r: struct node { int data; struct node *link; }; void reverse() { struct node *p = first, *q = NULL, *r; while (p != NULL) { r = q; q = p; p = p->link; q->link = r; } q = first; } Is there any other alternate to reverse the linked list? what would be the best logic to reverse a singly linked list, in terms of time complexity?

  • Creating a circually linked list in C#?

    - by Dexter
What would be the best way to create a circually linked list in C#. Should I derive it from the LinkedList< T collection? I'm planning on creating a simple address book using this Linked List to store my contacts (it's gonna be a suck-y address book, but I don't care cause I'll be the only one to use it). I mainly just want to create the crucially linked list so that I can use it again in other projects. If you don't think the Linked List is the right way to go let me know which way would be better.

  • Doubly Linked Lists Implementation

    - by user552127
Hi All, I have looked at most threads here about Doubly linked lists but still unclear about the following. I am practicing the Goodrich and Tamassia book in Java. About doubly linked lists, please correct me if I am wrong, it is different from a singly linked list in that a node could be inserted anywhere, not just after the head or after the tail using both the next and prev nodes available, while in singly linked lists, this insertion anywhere in the list is not possible ? If one wants to insert a node in a doubly linked list, then the default argument should be either the node after the to-be inserted node or node before the to-be inserted node ? But if this is so, then I don't understand how to pass the node before or after. Should we be displaying all nodes that were inserted till now and ask the user to select the node before or after which some new node is to be inserted ? My doubt is how to pass this default node. Because I assume that will require the next and prev nodes of these nodes as well. For e.g, Head<-A<-B<-C<-D<-E<-tail If Z is the new node to be inserted after say D, then how should node D be passed ? I am confused with this though it seems pretty simple to most. But pl do explain. Thanks, Sanjay

  • Can't remove first node in linked list

    - by carlmonday
I'm trying to make a linked list class in python (pointless I know, but it's a learning exercise), and the method I have written to remove a node doesn't work if I try to remove the first element of the linked list. If the node to be removed is anywhere else in the linked list the method works fine. Can someone give me some insight as to where I've gone wrong? Here's my code thus far: class Node: def __init__(self, data=None, next=None): self.data = data self.next = next def __repr__(self): return repr(self.data) def printNodes(self): while self: print self.data self = self.next def removeNode(self, datum): """removes node from linked list""" if self.data == datum: return self.next while self.next: if self.next.data == datum: self.next = self.next.next return self self = self.next

  • Multiple Linked List in C

    - by LuckySlevin
I have a problem about Linked Lists. I already know how to create structures and linked list. But now I have to create arbitrary number of linked list which are also be kept in another structure. Which means : struct list{int x, struct list *next; }; struct parent{int x, struct list *head, struct parent *next;} And after lists are created when i enter this input for example "123134 linked list should look like : 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 And for example 1 will contain 2-3 list inside of it, 3 will contain 1-4 list inside of it. I need a starting point and a spark from you. So how can i do this?

  • linked-server sql - access

    - by user22121
Hi, I have a SQL server 2000 and an Access database mdb connected by Linked server on the other hand I have a program in c # that updates data in a SQL table (Users) based data base access. When running my program returns the following error message: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. Authentication failed. [OLE / DB provider returned message: Can not start the application. Missing information file of the working group or is opened exclusively by another user.] OLE DB error trace [OLE / DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize:: Initialize returned 0x80040E4D: Authentication failed.] . Both the program, the sql server and database access are on a remote server. On the local server the problem was solved by running the following: "sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'ActSC', 'false', NULL, 'admin', NULL". Try on the remote server the next, without result: "sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'ActSC', true, null, 'user', 'pass'". On the remote server and from the "Query Analyzer" sql update statements are working correctly. Can you think of what may be the problem? Thanks!

  • Performance of inter-database query (between linked servers)

    - by Swoosh
I have an import between 2 linked servers. I basically got to get the data from a multiple join into a table on my side. The current query is something like this: select a.* from db1.dbo.tbl1 a inner join db1.dbo.tbl2 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl3 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl4 on ... inner join db2.dbo.myside on ... db1 = linked server db2 = my own database After this one, I am using an insert into + select to add this data in my table which is located in db2. (usually few hundred records - this import running once a minute) My question is related to performance. The tables on the linked server (tbl1, tbl2, tbl3, tbl4) are huge tables, with millions of records, and it is slowing down the import process. I was told that, if I do the join on the "other" side (db1 - linked server) for example in a stored procedure, than, even if the query looks the same, it would run faster. Is that right? This is kinda hard to test. Note that the join contains a table from my database too. Also. are there other "tricks" I could use in order to make this run faster? Thanks

I want to create View on [1.1.1.1] using table on linked server. EDIT: On creating using full name, [0.0.0.0].db.dbo.table, I am getting this error. SQL Execution Error. Executed SQL statement: SELECT * FROM 0.0.0.0.db.dbo.table (YOu can see brackets are not there.) Error Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider Error Message: Incorrect syntax near '0.0'. --- part of IP address. I am just creating this in ManagementStudio, not using it because it is not created yet. • Test if single linked list is circular by traversing it only once

    - by user1589754
I am a fresher and I was asked this question in a recent interview I gave. The question was --- By traversing each element of linked list just once find if the single linked list is circular at any point. To this I answered that we will store reference of each node while traversing the list in another linked list and for every node in the list being tested we will find if the reference exists in the list I am storing the references. The interviewer said that he needs a more optimized way to solve this problem. Can anyone please tell me what would be a more optimized method to solve this problem.

  • Random servers in Citrix servers suddenly bluescreens (mostly 0x0000008e and 0x0000007e)

    - by Rasmus Rask
I'm responsible for a Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 farm. Starting Friday 30. November, my servers started to crash randomly. So far we've experienced 80 crashes, so it's obviously becoming an increasingly big problem for us. I have 12+ years experience with IT, so I know the difference between 0 and 1, but I have a hard time cracking this. We've rolled back any recent changes I can think of for different groups of servers, but all groups still seem to crash. I don't have the skills to interpret the memory dumps to find the culprit. Has anyone encountered the same or a similar problem? - might be a generic Windows issue Other than executing "analyze -v" in WinDbg, how do I work my way through the memory dumps to see what actually triggered the BSOD? Any suggested steps in getting to the bottom of this? Any help is greatly appreciated. I can also provide links to kernel memory dumps or WinDbg output if necessary. Thanks! Problem description The majority of the STOP errors we encounter are: 0x0000008e KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (50%) 0x0000007e SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (26%) 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (21%) We also see a few 0x0000000a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (3%). For both 0x0000008e and 0x0000007e bug checks, the exception code is 0xc0000005 (Access Violation). We're using VMware on a normal rack mounted server and considering getting another. I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers? • Doubly linked lists

    - by user1642677
I have an assignment that I am terribly lost on involving doubly linked lists (note, we are supposed to create it from scratch, not using built-in API's). The program is supposed to keep track of credit cards basically. My professor wants us to use doubly-linked lists to accomplish this. The problem is, the book does not go into detail on the subject (doesn't even show pseudo code involving doubly linked lists), it merely describes what a doubly linked list is and then talks with pictures and no code in a small paragraph. But anyway, I'm done complaining. I understand perfectly well how to create a node class and how it works. The problem is how do I use the nodes to create the list? Here is what I have so far. public class CardInfo { private String name; private String cardVendor; private String dateOpened; private double lastBalance; private int accountStatus; private final int MAX_NAME_LENGTH = 25; private final int MAX_VENDOR_LENGTH = 15; CardInfo() { } CardInfo(String n, String v, String d, double b, int s) { setName(n); setCardVendor(v); setDateOpened(d); setLastBalance(b); setAccountStatus(s); } public String getName() { return name; } public String getCardVendor() { return cardVendor; } public String getDateOpened() { return dateOpened; } public double getLastBalance() { return lastBalance; } public int getAccountStatus() { return accountStatus; } public void setName(String n) { if (n.length() > MAX_NAME_LENGTH) throw new IllegalArgumentException("Too Many Characters"); else name = n; } public void setCardVendor(String v) { if (v.length() > MAX_VENDOR_LENGTH) throw new IllegalArgumentException("Too Many Characters"); else cardVendor = v; } public void setDateOpened(String d) { dateOpened = d; } public void setLastBalance(double b) { lastBalance = b; } public void setAccountStatus(int s) { accountStatus = s; } public String toString() { return String.format("%-25s %-15s $%-s %-s %-s", name, cardVendor, lastBalance, dateOpened, accountStatus); } } public class CardInfoNode { CardInfo thisCard; CardInfoNode next; CardInfoNode prev; CardInfoNode() { } public void setCardInfo(CardInfo info) { thisCard.setName(info.getName()); thisCard.setCardVendor(info.getCardVendor()); thisCard.setLastBalance(info.getLastBalance()); thisCard.setDateOpened(info.getDateOpened()); thisCard.setAccountStatus(info.getAccountStatus()); } public CardInfo getInfo() { return thisCard; } public void setNext(CardInfoNode node) { next = node; } public void setPrev(CardInfoNode node) { prev = node; } public CardInfoNode getNext() { return next; } public CardInfoNode getPrev() { return prev; } } public class CardList { CardInfoNode head; CardInfoNode current; CardInfoNode tail; CardList() { head = current = tail = null; } public void insertCardInfo(CardInfo info) { if(head == null) { head = new CardInfoNode(); head.setCardInfo(info); head.setNext(tail); tail.setPrev(node) // here lies the problem. tail must be set to something // to make it doubly-linked. but tail is null since it's // and end point of the list. } } } Here is the assignment itself if it helps to clarify what is required and more importantly, the parts I'm not understanding. • Under what circumstances are linked lists useful?

    - by Jerry Coffin
Most times I see people try to use linked lists, it seems to me like a poor (or very poor) choice. Perhaps it would be useful to explore the circumstances under which a linked list is or is not a good choice of data structure. Ideally, answers would expound on the criteria to use in selecting a data structure, and which data structures are likely to work best under specified circumstances.

  • DNS servers not set properly? Site failing to load by hostname, though loads fine by IP

    - by Crashalot
We run www.tekiki.com. Some users, including us, cannot reach www.tekiki.com because of DNS issues. The site resolves fine on the desktop, but it fails from our iPhones and iPads. This doesn't happen to everyone. We noticed the problem yesterday, then set our DNS servers to Cloudflare's DNS servers, hoping that would fix things. Accessing the site by IP addr loads the site fine. Two questions: 1) Does anyone know what the solution is? 2) Should we use other DNS servers besides Cloudflare?

  • Deleting a node from linked list in C

    - by LuckySlevin
My problem is deleting a node from linked list. I have two structs : typedef struct inner_list { int count; char word[100]; inner_list*next; } inner_list; typedef struct outer_list { char word [100]; inner_list * head; int count; outer_list * next; } outer_list; My problem is in deleting a node from outer_list linked list. For example when user entered aaa to delete, delete function should find the node with outer_list->word = aaa and delete this node and reconnect the list again. I tried the below code to do this. but After finding and deleting I'm losing the list. I don't know what's wrong. Please notice that outer_list have also a linked list of inner_list inside. void delnode(outer_list *head, char num[100]) { outer_list *temp, *m; temp=head; while(temp!=NULL) { if(strcmp(temp->word==num)==0) { if(temp==head) { head=temp->next; free(temp); return; } else { m->next=temp->next; free(temp); return; } }else { m=temp; temp= temp->next; } } printf(" ELEMENT %s NOT FOUND ", num); } What are your ideas about this?
