• What are Silverlight, WCF RIA services or applications?

  I asked a question here on programmers yesterday about learning HTML & CSS and the community was pretty generous to provide great answers. One of the answers was given by Emmad Kareem and that was : "if you can't do HTML, don't give up. Consider using Silverlight". This answer made me visit Silverlight.net and I came across the terms WCF RIA Services, Silverlight applications. After going through the website and some articles on website i am unable to draw a conclusive understanding on what this is all about. Is this another way of building websites using .NET, and is just like another framework like ASP.NET MVC3. What scenario's and requirements are basically targeted to silverlight applications or we are free to use either of Asp.net MVC or Silverlight in any web-application requirements.

• Understanding and developing web services

  This question is in conjuction with How would you approach developing a Hotel Reservation System? The solution to a system with different interfaces(or clients i should say) is to go with developing a Web service and have other systems interact with it. I never had the requirement for developing a Web service so i am bit short on it. All i understand is that A web service is a system or application that performs some operations which may include modifying, sending or receiving data over a network using HTTP protocol. (Let me know if the understanding is wrong) Now, from the other question it's clearly understood that i need to develop a web service but i have no idea as to how should i go about it. My language of choice is C# and .NET Framework. Question:: How do we develop a webservice and which tools,technology and framework should i use for the same using C# language?? Jeff Atwood wrote about them at The Elephant in the Room: Google Monoculture and Trouble In the House of Google. I have two questions: How does google index dynamic websites? This site has dynamic pages, QUESTIONS, TAGS, USERS, BADGES, UNANSWERED, ASK QUESTION. The content of these pages is dynamically generated, therefore we access the dynamic content and not the physical files on the server. But how does Google shows every question of the site or other dynamic websites? What does Google index and keep on its servers? Does it copy the complete page into its server or just the title, meta tags and body?

• Improving performance for web scraping code

  I have a website in which the code scrapes other websites for getting the accurate data. While the code works good but there a decent lag in performance because the code firsts downloads the html stream from various sites(some times 9 websites), extracts the relative part and then renders the html page. What should I do to get an optimal performance. Should I change from shared hosting (godaddy) to my own server or it has nothing to do with my hosting and I need to make changes to my code?

• Setting Meta tags for a website

  I have made an Asp.net MVC website and am not well versed about SEO techniques, so I want a little guidance in setting the appropriate meta tags for the website. My website is dynamic and has two types of Pages: Category and Product There are two tables in the database for Category and Product. Looking into the future, I added these fields beforehand to both the tables : -- MetaTitle--MetaDescription--MetaKeywords On both the Category and Product pages, these values are retrieved and set as following <meta name="description" content="@ViewBag.MetaDescription" /> <meta name="title" content="@ViewBag.MetaTitle" /> <meta name="keywords" content="@ViewBag.MetaKeywords" /> For better SEO how will you set up these meta tags. Will you include the site name in all three fields ? Right now, the Product page's MetaTitle, MetaDescription and MetaKeywords don't include the website name. If possible, can you provide me sample values that should be set for better SEO performance keeping the business name in mind.

• Is the C programming language still used?

  I am a C# programmer, and most of my development is for websites along with a few Windows application. As far as C goes, I haven't used it in a long time, as there was no need to. It came to me as a surprise when one of my friends said that she needs to learn C for testing jobs, while I was helping her learn C#. I figured that someone would only learn C for testing only if there is development done in C. In my knowledge, all the development related to COM and hardware design are also done in C++. Therefore, learning C doesn't make sense if you need to use C++. I also don't believe in historic significance, so why waste time and money in learning C? Is C is still used in any kind of new software development or anything else?

• Which is better : Storing/retrieving images on/from SQL server or in a directory on server

  I am working on a project in Asp.net MVC and need to work with images. There is an SQL database with a Product table. Every product in the table will have it's own image. I have two ways to do this : 1) Save the image in a web directory and store the URL on database. 2) Store the image in SQL itself in binary format and then retrieve it. Which is a better approach ? Mind you, I have no idea how second method works :-P . I will only learn this if there are merits to the second method

  I have read that Node.js is a server-side javascript enviroment. This has put few thought and tinkers in my mind. Can we develop a complete data-drivent web application utilizing just JavaScript (along with node.js), HTML5 and CSS? Do we still need to use some server-side scripting language (e.g. C#, PHP)? In case we still need to use other scripting languages, what is node.js worth for, or useful? NOTE: Pardon with my knowledge about node.js.

• Nagios suddenly stops working

  I have configure passive checks on one my host system for this i am using nsca. it was running fine. suddenly host is showing down on the monitoring. but host was fine and running when i check the logs on the host showing [1347941895] Warning: Attempting to execute the command "/submit_check_result host.example.com 'Current Load' OK 'OK - load average: 0.69, 0.53, 0.42'" resulted in a return code of 127. Make sure the script or binary you are trying to execute actually exists... i restarted nagios services many times but still it is showing the same error. can anyone help me regarding this. thanks in advance..

• Getting rid of getting stuck often [closed]

  I have been working with C# and .NET for around 2-3 years. But, still i get stuck too often. My project includes few simple websites(asp.net) in the early parts and then a desktop application for cotton transaction management(wpf). And right now, I am building a price compare website (asp.net MVC). Along the lines, I have read quite few books on C# and .NET, but still I get stuck very often. What pisses me is that the problems I get stuck in aren't very typical or hard. You can get a better idea by visiting my questions page on SO. After looking at my question lists, do you also feel that my basis or knowledge as a programmer are weak ? If so, How can i find a remedy to this problem ? And How can I stop getting stuck too often for simpler problems.

So, I was thinking of a way to test my website for on-load performance. Like how will the site perform when 100 or 1000 users are online at the same time and surfing the website. This will also make me understand whether my LINQ queries are well written or not.

• What advantages do we have when creating a separate mapping table for two relational tables

  In various open source CMS, I have noticed that there is a separate table for mapping two relational tables. Like for categories and products, there is a separate product_category_mapping table. This table just has a primary key and two foreign keys from the categories and product tables. My question is what are the benefits of this database design rather than just linking the tables directly by defining a foreign key in either table? Is it just matter of convenience?

• Why are interfaces useful?

  I have been studying and coding in C# for some time now. But still, I can't figure the usefulness of Interfaces. They bring too little to the table. Other than providing the signatures of function, they do nothing. If I can remember the names and signature of the functions which are needed to be implemented, there is no need for them. They are there just to make sure that the said functions(in the interface) are implemented in the inheriting class. C# is a great language, but sometimes it gives you the feeling that first Microsoft creates the problem (not allowing multiple inheritance) and then provides the solution, which is rather a tedious one. That's my understanding which is based on limited coding experience. What's your take on interfaces? How often you make uses of them and what makes you do so?

• What's the difference between stateful and stateless?

  The books and documentation on the MVC just heap on using the Stateful and Stateless terms. To be honest, i am just unable to grab the idea of it, what the books are talking about. They don't give an example to understand any of the either state, rather than just telling that HTTP is stateless and with ASP.NET MVC microsoft is going along with it. Am I missing some fundamental knowledge, as i can't understand what is stateful and why is stateful and same goes for stateless. A simple and short example that talks about a control like button or textbox can be simplify the understanding i suppose.

• Can I use Visual studio for Python and Django development?

  I have been using Visual Studio for quite some time now, in fact from the VS 2005 version. Right now, I am not only comfortable but addict to using it(VS 2010) for all my development needs. Recently I have been learning Python and Django. In that getting the tutorial tasks up and running with IDLE seems very lame and outdated(I am following the Django Book). Therefore, I downloaded and configured Eclipse & PyDev. Eclipse seems good and fine but needs a bit of learning curve for itself. So, I am looking for a way to configure Visual Studio 2010 for Python and Django development if possible. Please tell me if that's possible and How ?

• problem after login in wordpress site

  I have installed WordPress first installation on Apache server Its opening fine but when i logged in with my user id and password http://examplesite.com/wp-login.php It is showing blank in Firefox and in IE page not open with no errors.   I made a website which stayed online for 6 months. During that period the search results for the site were not at all good. Even typing the domain name yielded just two or three category result. Now, I have taken the site down for total redevelopment and redesign. The aim of this question is to know the basics for SEO to be done while redesigning the site. My site will be in ASP.NET MVC 3 and will have main categories, sub categories and sub-sub if any. Then there will be products in those categories. All the data will come from MSSQL DB. Please tell me just the basics required for a dynamic website during development. I want to ensure that google and other engines index all the pages of my site including products or whatever.

• Deploying Asp.net MVC web application [migrated]

  I have been trying to find a neat tutorial, guide or step by step instructions for deploying an Asp.net MVC3 webapp but have found nothing so far. Everyone talks about his version of the stroy and different type of MVC versions. Right now, I have build a simple Asp.net MVC web application which i need to deploy on my shared hosting account. In a very simple manner, I need to know which files should i copy. Do i upload everything in my webproject directory to the server including the controller directory, views, models, content and bin directory ?. What about the Global.asax, web.config, packages.config, myapp.publish.xml. In short, I have no idea which files should be uploaded and which should be not. I am sure of one thing that i need few(MVC and Razor dlls) following dlls in bin directory. Just treat me as someone who has never deployed any website NOTE:- I don't have VS SP1 installed and it doesn't install either. Basically i need a manual procedure.
