  • Why one loop is performing better than other memory wise as well as performance wise?

    - by Mohit
    I have following two loops in C#, and I am running these loops for a collection with 10,000 records being downloaded with paging using "yield return" First foreach(var k in collection) { repo.Save(k); } Second var collectionEnum = collection.GetEnumerator(); while (collectionEnum.MoveNext()) { var k = collectionEnum.Current; repo.Save(k); k = null; } Seems like that the second loop consumes less memory and it faster than the first loop. Memory I understand may be because of k being set to null(Even though I am not sure). But how come it is faster than for each. Following is the actual code [Test] public void BechmarkForEach_Test() { bool isFirstTimeSync = true; Func<Contact, bool> afterProcessing = contactItem => { return true; }; var contactService = CreateSerivce("/administrator/components/com_civicrm"); var contactRepo = new ContactRepository(new Mock<ILogger>().Object); contactRepo.Drop(); contactRepo = new ContactRepository(new Mock<ILogger>().Object); Profile("For Each Profiling",1,()=>{ var localenumertaor=contactService.Download(); foreach (var item in localenumertaor) { if (isFirstTimeSync) item.StateFlag = 1; item.ClientTimeStamp = DateTime.UtcNow; if (item.StateFlag == 1) contactRepo.Insert(item); else contactRepo.Update(item); afterProcessing(item); } contactRepo.DeleteAll(); }); } [Test] public void BechmarkWhile_Test() { bool isFirstTimeSync = true; Func<Contact, bool> afterProcessing = contactItem => { return true; }; var contactService = CreateSerivce("/administrator/components/com_civicrm"); var contactRepo = new ContactRepository(new Mock<ILogger>().Object); contactRepo.Drop(); contactRepo = new ContactRepository(new Mock<ILogger>().Object); var itemsCollection = contactService.Download().GetEnumerator(); Profile("While Profiling", 1, () => { while (itemsCollection.MoveNext()) { var item = itemsCollection.Current; //if First time sync then ignore and overwrite the stateflag if (isFirstTimeSync) item.StateFlag = 1; item.ClientTimeStamp = DateTime.UtcNow; if (item.StateFlag == 1) contactRepo.Insert(item); else contactRepo.Update(item); afterProcessing(item); item = null; } contactRepo.DeleteAll(); }); } static void Profile(string description, int iterations, Action func) { // clean up GC.Collect(); GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers(); GC.Collect(); // warm up func(); var watch = Stopwatch.StartNew(); for (int i = 0; i < iterations; i++) { func(); } watch.Stop(); Console.Write(description); Console.WriteLine(" Time Elapsed {0} ms", watch.ElapsedMilliseconds); } I m using the micro bench marking, from a stackoverflow question itself benchmarking-small-code The time taken is For Each Profiling Time Elapsed 5249 ms While Profiling Time Elapsed 116 ms

  • Java print binary number using bit-wise operator

    - by user69514
    Hi I am creating a method that will take a number and print it along with its binary representation. The problems is that my method prints all 0's for any positive number, and all 1's for any negative number private static void display( int number ){ System.out.print(number + "\t"); int mask = 1 << 31; for(int i=1; i<=32; i++) { if( (mask & number) != 0 ) System.out.print(1); else System.out.print(0); if( (i % 4) == 0 ) System.out.print(" "); } }

  • element-wise lookup on one ndarray to another ndarray of different shapes

    - by fahhean
    Hi, I am new to numpy. Am wonder is there a way to do lookup of two ndarray of different shapes? for example, i have 2 ndarrays as below: X = array([[0, 3, 6], [3, 3, 3], [6, 0, 3]]) Y = array([[0, 100], [3, 500], [6, 800]]) and would like to lookup each element of X in Y, then be able to return the second column of Y: Z = array([[100, 500, 800], [500, 500, 500], [800, 100, 500]]) thanks, fahhean

  • Installer Dialog comes up with Scroll bars on 800x480 resolution

    - by Nagashree
I am building an msi using WISE. The Dialogs appear fine when run on a 1280x800 resolution screen. But when I run the same msi on a 800x480 resolution screen, the installer dialog appears really huge and you cannot see the whole dialog on the screen. However, the dialog now comes up with a vertical and horizontal scrollbar allowing you to scroll and view it fully. Is there any property I need to set to adjust the installer dialog such that it appears properly on both higher and lower resolution screens?

  • Are Visual Studio Setup Projects suitable for complex setups

    - by Robert
Are "Visual Studio Setup" Projects suitable for complex setups in different versions? The application is rather large ( 500.000 lines of code) and is under continuous development. Every 6 to 10 month a new version gets released. We have multiple configuration files (INI and XML), registry keys, database migration scripts, etc. The application is in the progress of being migrated from VB6 to .NET . The old installer was build with Installshield. The feedback to Installshield is: Bad adaptability, bad reuse - thats way we are evaluating "Visual Studio Setup" as an alternative. Other products we consider: Free Solutions WiX NSIS Commercial Solutions Installshield (again..) Wise Advanced Installer sth. missing? Solutions we don't like to consider: Inno Setup (It just doesn't feel right)

  • Would using AJAX only "Add to Cart" buttons be wise?

    - by Alex Erwin
I want to AJAX enable all of my Add To Cart buttons because search engine bots are indexing these and not paying attention to my robots file or site map. I just don't want to loose potential customers. I have seen a number of top sites using heavily JavaScript support content, including Amazon, is it OK to follow the trend? The rest of my site progressively degrades, but I would really like to implement this because of the benefits to the customer (instant satisfaction), my infrastructure (constant page rebuilds), and allowing me to use SEO tools to optimize without the tool picking up thousands of "Add to Cart" widgets in my catalog. Thanks

  • Is it wise to ask about design decisions made on a product during an interview?

    - by Desolate Planet
I've been thinking about interview questions lately and I've been reflecting on bad interview experiences I've had in the past. One of particular note is where I had asked the interviewer why the team chose to use Spring over EJB3 in their product. The interviewer pretty much tore my face off, yelling "Because Spring is not the be all and end all of Java software development, do you want this job or not?". In response to this, I told him that this probably wasn't the job for me and I walked out the interview. He told me at the start of the interview that they had high stuff turnover, the product had gone from Modula 3 to Perl to Java then after asking him a technical question, he went in flames. It seemed obvious to me that he was toxic to the company with that kind of attitude. Question: Is it a good idea to probe on architectural choices taken in an interview? If not, why? From my own point of view, an interview is a two-way process. If the interviewers are testing me on my technical skills, I've got every right to ask them the same questions to 1) Figure out what their mindset and attitudes towards developing software solutions are and 2) To figure out if there are in line with how I would approach problems of that kind. It's very possible that the interviewer who got angry was a bad interviewer and forgot that an interview is a two-way process. If I was asked this, I would have simply said something along the lines of wanting to leverage the container more, but I certainly wouldn't have tried to put him in a state of meek capitulation. The interviewer in question was the lead developer in the team.

  • Is it wise for a programmer to move into management?

    - by Desolate Planet
Many times, a developer has suggested that I become a team leader because I'm motivated, but during my career in the IT industry, I've seen so many people who are great at programming, move into management and they are miserable. I've also seen many managers return to programming stating "I'm a technical person, I like technical problems". If this is such a common thing, why do developers feel compelled to leave the technical domain and move into management? Sure you'll have more money and more control, but if you don't enjoy your work and take your problems out on your tream. Secondly, I've been asked in developer interviews, "Would you consider leading a team?" and I'm always tempted to cite the Peter Principle based on what I've seen. I am interested in furthering myself, but not in the way the company may want i.e "Vice President of department blah". To be honest, I've seen this more often in the corporate world than in small development houses and it's always put me off ever going back to a corporate environment. I just feel that this is becoming more and more the norm and it's impacting team morale and degrading the quality of the work. Question: Based on what I've said, Is it a smart move for a technical person to move into management?

  • Can DrawIndexedPrimitives() be used for drawing a loaded model mesh-wise?

    - by Afzal
I am using DrawIndexedPrimitives() for drawing a loaded 3D model by drawing each mesh part, but this process makes my application very slow. This is perhaps because of a very large number of vertex/index buffer data created in video memory. That is why I am looking for a way to use the same method for each model mesh instead. The problem is that I don't know how I will set the textures of that mesh. Can anyone offer me some guidance?

  • Is changing my job now a wise decision? [closed]

    - by FlaminPhoenix
First a little background about myself. I am a javascript programmer with 3.8 years of experience. I joined my current company a year and 3 months ago, and I was recruited as a javascript programmer. I was under the impression I was a programmer in a programming team but this was not the case. No one else except me and my manager knows anything about programming in my team. The other two teammates, copy paste stuff from websites into excel sheets. I was told I was being recruited for a new project, and it was true. The only problem was that the server side language they were using was PHP. They were using a popular library with PHP, and I had never worked with PHP before. Nevertheless, I learnt it well enough to get things working, and received high praise from my boss's boss on whichever project I worked on. Words like "wow" , "This looks great, the clients gonna be impressed with this." were sprinkled every now and then on reviewing my work. They even managed to sell my work to a couple of clients and as I understand, both of my projects are going to fetch them a pretty buck. The problem: I was asked to move into a project which my manager was handling. I asked them for training on the project which never came, and sure enough I couldnt complete my first task on the new project without shortcomings. I told my manager there were things I didnt know how to get done in the new project due to lack of training. His project had 0 documentation. I was told he would "take care" of everything relating to those shortcomings. In the meantime, I was asked to switch to another project. My manager made the necessary changes and later told me that the build had "broken" on the production server and that I needed to "test" my changes before saying things were done. I never deployed it on the production server. He did. I never saw / had the opportunity to see the final build before it went to production. He called me for a separate meeting and started pointing fingers at me, but I took full responsibility even if I didnt have to. He later on got on a call with his boss, in my presence, and gave him the impression that it was all my fault. I did not confront him about this so far. I have worked late / done overtime without them asking a lot, but last week, I just got home from work, and I got calls asking me to solve an issue which till then they had kept quiet about even though they were informed about it. I asked my manager why I hadnt been tasked with this when I was in office. He started telling me which statements to put where, as if to mock me, and that this "is hardly an overtime issue" and this pissed me off. Also, during the previous meeting, he was constantly talking highly about his work, at the same time trying to demean mine. In the meantime, I have attended an interview with another MNC, and the interviewers there were fully respectful of my decision to leave my current company. Its a software company, so I can expect my colleagues to know a lot more than me. Im told I can expect their offer anytime this week. My questions: Is my anger towards my manager justified? While leaving, do I tell him that its because of his actions that Im leaving? Do I erupt in anger and tell him that he shouldnt have put the blame on me since he was the one doing the deployment? This is going to be my second resignation to this company. The first time I wanted to resign, I was asked to stay back and my manager promised a lot of changes, a couple of which were made. How do I keep myself from getting into such situations with my employers in the future?

  • Multiplayer in a game. How to design it object wise?

    - by Ninetou
I was suggested on StackOverflow to ask this question here. I'm working on a simple game and I was thinking of adding multiplayer feature but I'm a bit stuck. I'm not sure what approach should I take, keeping in mind good programming practices. I have a Player object which is created for each player but then I have many other classes that would have to be able to access them. The thing is, if I initialise them in, let's say my main method, then I can't relate to different instances of player class from other classes. The only solution to my problem that comes to my mind is using some form of global objects but afaik using anything globally in apps is usually not a good practice. Any suggestions/ideas?

  • JSF 2.0 Problem

    - by Sarang
    I am doing a project where I am using JSF 2.0 & Primefaces UI Components. There is a tab view component with tabs, "Day","Week" & "Month". In all tab, I have to display Bar Charts in each. For the same, I am fetching three list using the following three method. In the following code, UpdateCountHelper is fetching the data from database. So, UpdateCountHelper is taking some time for fetching data. This is code for fetching lists : public List<UpdateCount> getDayUpdateCounts() { if (projectFlag == true) { if (displayFlag == 1) { dayUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(1); } else { dayUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(name, 1); } } else { dayUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getResourceUpdates(userName, 1); } return dayUpdateCounts; } public List<UpdateCount> getMonthUpdateCounts() { if (projectFlag == true) { if (displayFlag == 1) { monthUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(30); } else { monthUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(name, 30); } } else { monthUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getResourceUpdates(userName, 30); } return monthUpdateCounts; } public List<UpdateCount> getWeekUpdateCounts() { if (projectFlag == true) { if (displayFlag == 1) { weekUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(7); } else { weekUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getProjectUpdates(name, 7); } } else { weekUpdateCounts = UpdateCountHelper.getResourceUpdates(userName, 7); } return weekUpdateCounts; } This is code for UI of Bar Chart : <p:panel id="Chart"> <p:tabView dynamic="false" cache="false"> <p:tab title="Day"> <p:panel id="chartDayPanel"> <center> <h:outputText id="projectWiseDayText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Day Update"/> <p:columnChart id="projectWiseDayUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.dayUpdateCounts}" var="dayWiseUpdate" xfield="#{dayWiseUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Project Wise Current Day Update" value="#{dayWiseUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseDayText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Day Update"/> <p:columnChart id="resourceWiseDayUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.dayUpdateCounts}" var="dayWiseResourceUpdate" xfield="#{dayWiseResourceUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Resource Wise Current Day Update" value="#{dayWiseResourceUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> </center> </p:panel> </p:tab> <p:tab title="Week"> <p:panel id="chartWeekPanel"> <center> <h:outputText id="projectWiseWeekText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Week Update"/> <p:columnChart id="projectWiseWeekUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.weekUpdateCounts}" var="weekWiseUpdate" xfield="#{weekWiseUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Project Wise Current Week Update" value="#{weekWiseUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseWeekText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Week Update"/> <p:columnChart id="resourceWiseWeekUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.weekUpdateCounts}" var="weekWiseResourceUpdate" xfield="#{weekWiseResourceUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Resource Wise Current Week Update" value="#{weekWiseResourceUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> </center> </p:panel> </p:tab> <p:tab title="Month"> <p:panel id="chartMonthPanel"> <center> <h:outputText id="projectWiseMonthText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Month Update"/> <p:columnChart id="projectWiseMonthUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.monthUpdateCounts}" var="monthWiseUpdate" xfield="#{monthWiseUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Project Wise Current Month Update" value="#{monthWiseUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseMonthText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Month Update"/> <p:columnChart id="resourceWiseMonthUpdateChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.monthUpdateCounts}" var="monthWiseResourceUpdate" xfield="#{monthWiseResourceUpdate.name}" height="200px" width="640px"> <p:chartSeries label="Resource Wise Current Month Update" value="#{monthWiseResourceUpdate.noUpdates}"/> </p:columnChart> </center> </p:panel> </p:tab> </p:tabView> </p:panel> Now, I have to display same data in other tabview with same tabs as mentioned above & only thing is now I have to display in Pie Chart. Now in pie chart, I am using the same lists. So, it will again fetch the data from database & waste time. To solve that problem I have created other three lists & have given only reference of those previous lists. So, now no database fetching occur. The Code for applying the reference is : public List<UpdateCount> getPieDayUpdateCounts() { pieDayUpdateCounts = dayUpdateCounts; return pieDayUpdateCounts; } public List<UpdateCount> getPieMonthUpdateCounts() { pieMonthUpdateCounts = monthUpdateCounts; return pieMonthUpdateCounts; } public List<UpdateCount> getPieWeekUpdateCounts() { pieWeekUpdateCounts = weekUpdateCounts; return pieWeekUpdateCounts; } But, over here the problem occurring is that only chart of which the tab is enable is displayed but the other remaining 2 tabs are not showing any chart. The code for UI is : <p:tabView dynamic="false" cache="false"> <p:tab title="Day"> <center> <p:panel id="pieChartDayPanel"> <h:outputText id="projectWiseDayPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Day Update"/> <p:pieChart id="projectWiseDayUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.dayUpdateCounts}" var="dayWisePieUpdate" categoryField="#{dayWisePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{dayWisePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseDayPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Day Update"/> <p:pieChart id="resourceWiseDayUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.dayUpdateCounts}" var="dayWiseResourcePieUpdate" categoryField="#{dayWiseResourcePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{dayWiseResourcePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> </p:panel> </center> </p:tab> <p:tab title="Week"> <center> <p:panel id="pieChartWeekPanel"> <h:outputText id="projectWiseWeekPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Week Update"/> <p:pieChart id="projectWiseWeekUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.weekUpdateCounts}" var="weekWisePieUpdate" categoryField="#{weekWisePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{weekWisePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseWeekPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Week Update"/> <p:pieChart id="resourceWiseWeekUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.weekUpdateCounts}" var="weekWiseResourcePieUpdate" categoryField="#{weekWiseResourcePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{weekWiseResourcePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> </p:panel> </center> </p:tab> <p:tab title="Month"> <center> <p:panel id="pieChartMonthPanel"> <h:outputText id="projectWiseMonthPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="Project Wise Month Update"/> <p:pieChart id="projectWiseMonthUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.projectFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.monthUpdateCounts}" var="monthWisePieUpdate" categoryField="#{monthWisePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{monthWisePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> <h:outputText id="resourceWiseMonthPieChartText" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="Resource Wise Month Update"/> <p:pieChart id="resourceWiseMonthUpdatePieChart" rendered="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.resourceFlag}" value="#{systemUtilizationServiceBean.monthUpdateCounts}" var="monthWiseResourcePieUpdate" categoryField="#{monthWiseResourcePieUpdate.name}" dataField="#{monthWiseResourcePieUpdate.noUpdates}" height="200" width="200"/> </p:panel> </center> </p:tab> </p:tabView> What should be the reason behind this ?

  • Is giving read permissions on /etc/shadow to apache user a wise decision from security point of view?

    - by Czar
I have to use PAM authentication for DAV SVN, but when everything is configured as specified in mod_auth_pam documentation, authentication does not work. After some research I realized, that for this to work, httpd should be running under root user (which I don't like and won't implement) or apache user (under which httpd is running by default) should have permissions to read /etc/shadow file. So there is a pair of questions connected to each other which I want to ask: Is giving this permition to apache user a wise decision from security point of view? If answer to the first question is "yes", what is the correct way to do so? For now I've done following: groupadd shadow usermod -G shadow apache chmod g+r /etc/shadow Another way I can come up with is using acl: setfacl -m u:apache:r /etc/shadow Note: OS is Fedora 14 x86_64 (kernel: 2.6.35.11) httpd v2.2.17 mod_auth_pam v1.1.1

Hi all, I am wondering if there exists in R a package/function to perform the: "Post Hoc Pair-Wise Comparisons for the Chi-Square Test of Homogeneity of Proportions" (or an equivalent of it) Which is described here: http://epm.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/53/4/951 My situation is of just making a chi test, on a 2 by X matrix. I found a difference, but I want to know which of the columns is "responsible" for the difference. Thanks, Tal

  • Changing careers to Software Engineering.... Wise?

    - by Phil
Hello everyone, I notice this site has a wealth of software professionals and I am investigating a career change to Software Engineering: *Particularly, I would like to know how likely one would be able to work from home or another country over the internet. Is this something that can be done and what does it usually entail? (time?,experience?, specific companies?, etc) *Currently, I am a teacher but always had a passion for tech. I am interested in a MS - Software Engineering program designed for individuals based from another field. Is this a wise degree to obtain? Would I be just wasting my time and money obtaining this degree? (I'm suspicious about this program and the feasibility of obtaining employment without a healthy CS background) Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

  • How small (spec wise) can a virtual machine be and still boot up and run some sort of OS?

    - by IllvilJa
One of the advantages with virtual machines is that you can be very flexible with their sizes. If the host system permits it, you can have a very large virtual machine with a lot of virtual RAM and disk. Also, you can decide to go the other way around, to give the virtual machine a very modest amount of RAM and disk and then choose and configure the OS appropriately. The question is, how small virtual machines have people managed to setup (and get to both boot up and to run)? Virtual machines doing something usuful is preferable, even if I know "useful" in this context is awfully subjective, but laboratory-cases with a configuration stripped beyond common sense could be intresting as well, just to see what people manage to boot and run. Quite open ended question and quite academic, but think of it: an extremely small VM (which still does something useful) takes very little memory and disk and can be quite quickly saved to and restored from disk. If it's also gentle on CPU resources, one might consider having a huge number of such VMs up and running on a host. (Imagine a VM running just an old Commodore 64 or Commodore Amiga in it. Ok, way wrong CPU architecture for modern Virtualization software running on a x86-based PC but still an interesting thought. You could have quite a few such small VMs running on a modern PC.)

  • Is there a program that compares image files and reports if they are exactly the same pixel-wise?

    - by Nathaniel Drake
I'm making a regression testing suite for some rendering software. I need to be able to load an image file (PNG or TGA, ideally) and compare the pixel values to a standard approved image. I'd like it to be command line driven too, so I can make a batch file to run all the tests. All the compare utilities I have found so far either show differences (I just need it to fail if they are different) or compare all the bytes, meaning that meta-data will trigger a fail. Anyone got any suggestions? I am not a coder, and can only barely cobble a batch script together. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Is it wise to use SSHDs (Solid state hybrid drives) on a server?

    - by Seb
I have a bunch of servers with very heavy I/O that currently use SATA3/SAS drives, but do suffer from I/O wait on the SATA drives, and I have just been alerted to the existence of SSHDs which cost the same for 1TB as the 1TB SATA drives that we currently use. However, previously (until Seagate shipped their first 3.5" SSHD in March) they seemed to be exclusively for Netbooks/Notebooks, which leads me to suspect they're not exactly built for the heavy I/O they'd be in for with my servers. So, would an SSHD give me a performance boost over my SATA3 drives in a heavy I/O environment (such as multiple very large high speed file transfers) or is it best to stick with SATA3 with I/O wait??

  • Quality wise, is Windows Media Audio 10 Professional equivalent to WMA?

    - by Louis
I noticed that for encoding CD rips, Zune is still using WMA 9.2 instead of WMA 10 Pro. On a given file using the highest quality VBR settings looks like this: VBR Quality 98, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR On the same file if I use WMA 10 Pro, with the same settings, the resulting file is about 20% smaller. Using my ears, I'm unable to tell the difference, but I'm wondering if this was the goal of WMA 10 Pro (to be as good as WMA at a lower bitrate). Is the quality of a WMA 10 Pro file equal to that of a WMA 9.2 file encoded with the same settings?

I wanted to know if someone got access to my server by using a nonroot account, how much damage can he do? After i su someuser I used this command to find all files and folders that are writeable. find / -writable >> list.txt Here is the result. Its most /dev/something and /proc/something and these /var/lock /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock /var/tmp /var/lib/php5 Is my system secure? /var/tmp makes sense but i am unsure why this user has write access to those folders. Should i change them? stat /var/lib/php5 gives me 1733 which is odd. Why write access? why no read? is this some kind of weird use of a temp file?

  • Is it safe/wise to run Drupal alongside bespoke business web apps in production?

    - by Vaze
I'm interested to know the general community feeling about the safety of running Drupal alongside bespoke, business critial ASP.NET MVC apps on a production server. Previously my employer's Drupal based 'visitor website' was hosted as a managed service with a 3rd party. While the LoB sites were hosted in-house. That 3rd party is no longer available so I'm considering my options: Bring Drupal in-house Find another 3rd party My concern is that I have little experience with Drupal administration (and no experience securing it) and that the addition of PHP to my IIS server poses a security risk. Is there a best practice that I can follow in this situation?

  • How to keep multiple servers in sync file wise?

    - by GForceSys
I'm currently managing a cluster of PHP-FPM servers, all of which tend to get out of sync with each other. The application that I'm using on top of the app servers (Magento) allows for admins to modify various files on the system, but now that the site is in a clustered set up modifying a file only modifies it on a single instance (on one of the app servers) of the various machines in the cluster. Is there an open-source application for Linux that may allow me to keep all of these servers in sync? I have no problem with creating a small VM instance that can listen for changes from machines to sync. In theory, the perfect application would have small clients that run on each machine to be synced, which would talk to the master server which would then decide how/what to sync from each machine. I have already examined the possibilities of running a centralized file server, but unfortunately my app servers are spread out between EC2 and physical machines, which makes this unfeasible. As there are multiple app servers (some of which are dynamically created depending on the load of the site), simply setting up a rsync cron job is not efficient as the cron job would have to be modified on each machine to send files to every other machine in the cluster, and that would just be a whole bunch of unnecessary data transfers/ssh connections.

  • What's best choice career-wise, to know a little about a lot or a lot about a little?

    - by nimo
I work as a developer at a rather small company and we are providing a web application that is used by a big base of customers. Because we are so small everyone have to be able to do a lot of different tasks. It ranges from advanced support, developing the product (programming: c/c++, c#, php, sql, javascript, html, css), handle network configuration and network related issues and even sometimes go on sales meetings with potential customers. My concern is that I don't really specialize in any specific area. I know and learn little about a lot. I have graduated from school two years ago and this is my first real employment and when I look at other positions out there they always require so and so many years of experience in a specific area (for example 5 years of C#). For me to get that kind of specialized experience will be really hard at my current job. My question for you is what is, in your opinion, best choice career-wise, to know a little about a lot or a lot about a little? What path did you take? pros and cons that comes with that choice.
