• Are reference attributes destroyed when class is destroyed in C++?

- by Genba
Suppose I have a C++ class with an attribute that is a reference: class ClassB { ClassA &ref; public: ClassB(ClassA &_ref); } Of course, the constructor is defined this way: ClassB::ClassB(ClassA &_ref) : ref(_ref) { /* ... */ } My question is: When an instance of class 'ClassB' is destroyed, is the object referenced by 'ClassB::ref' also destroyed?

• Dynamically reference a Named Table Column via cell content in Excel

- by rcphq
How do I reference an Excel Table column dynamically in Excel 2007? ie: i wanna reference a named column of a named table and what table it is will vary with the value of a cell. I have a Table in Excel (Let's call it Table1). I want to reference one of its columns (Let's call it column1) dynamically from a value in another cell (A1) so that I can achieve the following result: When I change A1, the formula that counts Table1[DynamicallyReferencedColumnName] gets updated to the new reference. I tried using =Count(Table1[INDIRECT("$A$1")]) but Excel says the formula contains an error. Example: A1 = names then the formula would equal Count(Table1[names]). A1 = lastname then the formula would equal Count(Table1[lastname]).

• ILMerge - Unresolved assembly reference not allowed: System.Core

- by Steve Michelotti
ILMerge is a utility which allows you the merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single binary assembly more for convenient distribution. Recently we ran into problems when attempting to use ILMerge on a .NET 4 project. We received the error message: An exception occurred during merging: Unresolved assembly reference not allowed: System.Core. at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetAssemblyRefIndex(AssemblyNode assembly) at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetTypeRefIndex(TypeNode type) at System.Compiler.Ir2md.VisitReferencedType(TypeNode type) at System.Compiler.Ir2md.GetMemberRefIndex(Member m) at System.Compiler.Ir2md.PopulateCustomAttributeTable() at System.Compiler.Ir2md.SetupMetadataWriter(String debugSymbolsLocation) at System.Compiler.Ir2md.WritePE(Module module, String debugSymbolsLocation, BinaryWriter writer) at System.Compiler.Writer.WritePE(String location, Boolean writeDebugSymbols, Module module, Boolean delaySign, String keyFileName, String keyName) at System.Compiler.Writer.WritePE(CompilerParameters compilerParameters, Module module) at ILMerging.ILMerge.Merge() at ILMerging.ILMerge.Main(String[] args) It turns out that this issue is caused by ILMerge.exe not being able to find the .NET 4 framework by default. The answer was ultimately found here. You either have to use the /lib option to point to your .NET 4 framework directory (e.g., “C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319” or “C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319”) or just use an ILMerge.exe.config file that looks like this: 1: <configuration> 2: <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> 3: <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> 4: </startup> 5: </configuration> This was able to successfully resolve my issue.

• BizTalk Pipeline Component Error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

- by Stuart Brierley
Yesterday I posted about my BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component, which can be found on Codeplex if anyone is interested in taking a look. During testing of this component I began to encounter an error whereby the component would throw an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error when processing as a part of a Custom Pipeline. This was occurring when the component was reading a ReadOnlySeekableStream so that the data can be archived to file, but the actual code throwing the error was somewhere in the depths of the Microsoft.BizTalk.Streaming stack. It turns out that there is a known issue where this exception can be thrown because the garbage collector has disposed of of the stream before execution of the custom pipeline has completed. To get around this you need to add the streams in your code to the pipeline context resource tracker. So a block of my code goes from: originalStrm = bodyPart.GetOriginalDataStream(); if (!originalStrm.CanSeek) { ReadOnlySeekableStream seekableStream = new ReadOnlySeekableStream(originalStrm); inmsg.BodyPart.Data = seekableStream; originalStrm = inmsg.BodyPart.Data; } fileArchive = new FileStream(FullPath, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write); binWriter = new BinaryWriter(fileArchive); byte[] buffer = new byte[bufferSize]; int sizeRead = 0; while ((sizeRead = originalStrm.Read(buffer, 0, bufferSize)) != 0) { binWriter.Write(buffer, 0, sizeRead); } to originalStrm = bodyPart.GetOriginalDataStream(); if (!originalStrm.CanSeek) { ReadOnlySeekableStream seekableStream = new ReadOnlySeekableStream(originalStrm); inmsg.BodyPart.Data = seekableStream; originalStrm = inmsg.BodyPart.Data; } pc.ResourceTracker.AddResource(originalStrm); fileArchive = new FileStream(FullPath, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write); binWriter = new BinaryWriter(fileArchive); byte[] buffer = new byte[bufferSize]; int sizeRead = 0; while ((sizeRead = originalStrm.Read(buffer, 0, bufferSize)) != 0) { binWriter.Write(buffer, 0, sizeRead); } So far this seems to have solved the issue, the error is no more, and my archive component is continuing its way through testing.

• Comparing the Performance of Visual Studio's Web Reference to a Custom Class

As developers, we all make assumptions when programming. Perhaps the biggest assumption we make is that those libraries and tools that ship with the .NET Framework are the best way to accomplish a given task. For example, most developers assume that using ASP.NET's Membership system is the best way to manage user accounts in a website (rather than rolling your own user account store). Similarly, creating a Web Reference to communicate with a web service generates markup that auto-creates a proxy class, which handles the low-level details of invoking the web service, serializing parameters, and so on. Recently a client made us question one of our fundamental assumptions about the .NET Framework and Web Services by asking, "Why should we use proxy class created by Visual Studio to connect to a web service?" In this particular project we were calling a web service to retrieve data, which was then sorted, formatted slightly and displayed in a web page. The client hypothesized that it would be more efficient to invoke the web service directly via the HttpWebRequest class, retrieve the XML output, populate an XmlDocument object, then use XSLT to output the result to HTML. Surely that would be faster than using Visual Studio's auto-generated proxy class, right? Prior to this request, we had never considered rolling our own proxy class; we had always taken advantage of the proxy classes Visual Studio auto-generated for us. Could these auto-generated proxy classes be inefficient? Would retrieving and parsing the web service's XML directly be more efficient? The only way to know for sure was to test my client's hypothesis. Read More >

• KeyRef – A Keyboard Shortcut Reference Site

- by Liam McLennan
The mouse is like computer training wheels. It makes using a computer easier – but it slows you down. Like many of my peers I am making a effort to learn keyboard shortcuts to reduce my dependence on the mouse. So I have started accumulating browser bookmarks to websites listing keyboard shortcuts for vim and resharper etc. Based on the assumption that I am not the only person who finds this untenable I am considering building the ultimate keyboard shortcut reference site. This is an opportunity for me to improve my rails skills and hopefully contribute something useful to the anti-mouse community. Mockups Shortcuts will be grouped by application, so the first thing a user needs to do is find their application. They do this by typing the application name into a textbox and then selecting from a reducing list of applications. This interface will work like the stackoverflow tags page. Selecting an application will take the user to a page that lists the shortcuts for that application. This page will have a permalink for bookmarking. Shortcuts can be searched by keyword or by using the shortcut.

• pointer to const member function typedef

- by oldcig
I know it's possible to separate to create a pointer to member function like this struct K { void func() {} }; typedef void FuncType(); typedef FuncType K::* MemFuncType; MemFuncType pF = &K::func; Is there similar way to construct a pointer to a const function? I've tried adding const in various places with no success. I've played around with gcc some and if you do template deduction on something like template <typename Sig, typename Klass> void deduce(Sig Klass::*); It will show Sig with as a function signature with const just tacked on the end. If to do this in code it will complain that you can't have qualifiers on a function type. Seems like it should be possible somehow because the deduction works.

• Add static const data to a struct already defined

- by Kyle
Since static const data inside a class is really just namespace sugar for constants I would think that struct A { float a; struct B { static const int b = a; }; }; would be equivalent to struct A { float a; }; struct A::B { static const int b = a; }; or something similar. Is something like this possible in C++? It would be useful for me to be able to tag class definitions that I'm pulling in from third party libraries with information like this.

• Qt: QAbstractItemModel and 'const'

- by Eye of Hell
Hello. I'm trying to use a QTreeView for a first time, with a QAbstractItemModel. And instantly it's a problem: QAbstractItemModel interface declares methods as 'const', assuming they will not change data. But i want a result of SQL query displayed, and returning data for a record with specified indeq REQUIRES to use QSqlQuery::seek() that is a non-const. Is it any 'official' guideline to use a QAbstractItemModel with data that MUST be changed in order to get number of items, data per item etc? Or i must hack C++ with const casts?

• How to discard const in c++

- by Vincenzo
This is what I'm trying to do and I can't: #include <string> using namespace std; class A { bool has() const { return get().length(); } string& get() { return s; } private: string s; }; The error I'm getting is: passing ‘const A’ as ‘this’ argument of ‘std::string& A::get()’ discards qualifiers I understand what the problem is, but how can I fix it? I really need has() to be const. Thanks.

• Instruments memory leak iphone

- by dubbeat
Hi, I posted this problem a few days ago but it was very muddled and my question wasnt very clear so I removed it. I've been digging around and the memory leak is still persiting. Hopefully this attempt will be clearer. First off I've run the static analyzer and it reports no memory leaks. I then ran Instruments and it pointed to a memory leak at this line of code. As far as I can see there is no memory leak. featured=[[UILabel alloc]initWithFrame:CGRectMake(130,15, 200, 15)]; //[featured setFont:[UIFont UIFontboldSystemFontOfSize:20]]; featured.font = [UIFont boldSystemFontOfSize:20]; featured.backgroundColor= [UIColor clearColor]; featured.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; featured.text= @"Featured Promo"; [self.view addSubview:featured]; [featured release]; featured=nil; If I comment out the above code Instruments reports another memory leak in another block of code where there is no discernible leak. UIButton *populartbutton = [[UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect]]; populartbutton.frame = CGRectMake(112, 145, 90, 22); // size and position of button [populartbutton setTitle:@"Popular" forState:UIControlStateNormal]; populartbutton.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; populartbutton.adjustsImageWhenHighlighted = YES; [populartbutton addTarget:self action:@selector(getpopular:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; [self.view addSubview:populartbutton]; Instruments also says Responsible Library = Core Graphics Responsible Frame = open_handle_to_dylib_path This Is the stack trace. 53 Promo start 52 Promo main /Users/..2/main.m:14 51 UIKit UIApplicationMain 50 UIKit -[UIApplication _run] 49 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunInMode 48 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunSpecific 47 GraphicsServices PurpleEventCallback 46 UIKit _UIApplicationHandleEvent 45 UIKit -[UIApplication sendEvent:] 44 UIKit -[UIApplication handleEvent:withNewEvent:] 43 UIKit -[UIApplication _reportAppLaunchFinished] 42 QuartzCore CA::Transaction::commit() 41 QuartzCore CA::Context::commit_transaction(CA::Transaction*) 40 QuartzCore CALayerLayoutIfNeeded 39 QuartzCore -[CALayer layoutSublayers] 38 UIKit -[UILayoutContainerView layoutSubviews] 37 UIKit -[UINavigationController _startDeferredTransitionIfNeeded] 36 UIKit -[UINavigationController _startTransition:fromViewController:toViewController:] 35 UIKit -[UINavigationController _layoutViewController:] 34 UIKit -[UINavigationController_computeAndApplyScrollContentInsetDeltaForViewController:] 33 UIKit -[UIViewController contentScrollView] 32 UIKit -[UIViewController view] 31 Promo -[FeaturedLevelViewController viewDidLoad] /Users/..s/FeaturedLevelViewController.m:67 // THIS IS MY CLASS WHERE THE CODE SAMPLES ABOVE ARE FROM 30 UIKit -[UILabel initWithFrame:] 29 UIKit -[UILabel _commonInit] 28 UIKit +[UILabel defaultFont] 27 UIKit +[UIFont systemFontOfSize:] 26 GraphicsServices GSFontCreateWithName 25 CoreGraphics CGFontCreateWithName 24 CoreGraphics CGFontCreateWithFontName 23 CoreGraphics CGFontFinderGetDefault 22 CoreGraphics CGFontGetVTable 21 libSystem.B.dylib pthread_once 20 CoreGraphics load_vtable 19 CoreGraphics load_library 18 CoreGraphics CGLibraryLoadFunction 17 CoreGraphics load_function 16 CoreGraphics open_handle_to_dylib_path 15 libSystem.B.dylib dlopen 14 dyld dlopen 13 dyld dyld::link(ImageLoader*, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 12 dyld ImageLoader::link(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&, bool, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 11 dyld ImageLoader::recursiveLoadLibraries(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 10 dyld dyld::libraryLocator(char const*, bool, char const*, ImageLoader::RPathChain const*) 9 dyld dyld::load(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&) 8 dyld dyld::loadPhase0(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 7 dyld dyld::loadPhase1(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 6 dyld dyld::loadPhase3(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 5 dyld dyld::loadPhase4(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 4 dyld dyld::loadPhase5(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 3 dyld dyld::mkstringf(char const*, ...) 2 dyld strdup 1 dyld malloc 0 libSystem.B.dylib malloc I'm really not too sure how to use this information to fix the problem so any guidance would be appreciated. • Objective-C : Member variable is losing reference between method calls.

- by Winston
Hello, I've been having with an objective-c class which appears to be losing its pointer reference between methods of the same class. In the MyTableViewController.h file, I declare: @interface SettingsTableViewController : UITableViewController <UITextFieldDelegate>{ OCRAppDelegate *delegate; } MyTableViewController.m file - (id) init { self = [ super initWithStyle: UITableViewStyleGrouped ]; delegate = [(OCRAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] retain]; } The problem is when the "MyTableViewController" view appears again and a different method is executed within that same class, the delegate pointer (which was assigned during the init method) is no longer there. I tried to retain, but to no avail. Would anyone know why this is, it seems like perhaps it is a fundamental Objective-C issue which I am missing. Appreciate your help. Thanks, Winston

• How to retrieve stored reference to an NSManagedObject subclass?

- by DavidDev
Hi! I have a NSManagedObject subclass named Tour. I stored the reference to it using this code: prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSURL *myURL = [[myTour objectID] URIRepresentation]; NSData *uriData = [NSKeyedArchiver archivedDataWithRootObject:myURL]; [prefs setObject:uriData forKey:@"tour"]; Now I want to retrieve it. I tried using: NSData *myData = [prefs objectForKey:@"tour"]; NSURL *myURL = [NSKeyedUnarchiver unarchiveObjectWithData:myData]; TourAppDelegate *appDelegate = (TourAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; NSManagedObjectID *myID = [appDelegate.persistentStoreCoordinator managedObjectIDForURIRepresentation:myURL]; if (myID) { Tour *tempObject = [appDelegate.managedObjectContext objectWithID:myID]; //WARNING tour = tempObject; } if (tour) //instruction... But it's giving me this warning "Incompatible Objective-c types. Initializing 'struct NSManagedObject *', expected 'struct Tour *' Plus, when executing, it's giving me this: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSObjectInaccessibleException', reason: 'CoreData could not fulfill a fault for '0x5001eb0 How can I solve this?

• How Do I Pass The Value (Not The Reference) of a JS Variable to a Function?

- by ryan
Here is a simplified version of something I'm trying to run: for (var i = 0; i < results.length; i++) { marker = results[i]; google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click', function() { change_selection(i); }); } but I'm finding that every listener uses the value of results.length (the value when the for loop terminates). How can I add listeners such that each uses the value of i at the time I add it, rather than the reference to i?

• This code appears to achieve the return of a null reference in C++

- by Chuck
Hi folks, My C++ knowledge is somewhat piecemeal. I was reworking some code at work. I changed a function to return a reference to a type. Inside, I look up an object based on an identifier passed in, then return a reference to the object if found. Of course I ran into the issue of what to return if I don't find the object, and in looking around the web, many people claim that returning a "null reference" in C++ is impossible. Based on this advice, I tried the trick of returning a success/fail boolean, and making the object reference an out parameter. However, I ran into the roadblock of needing to initialize the references I would pass as actual parameters, and of course there is no way to do this. I retreated to the usual approach of just returning a pointer. I asked a colleague about it. He uses the following trick quite often, which is accepted by both a recent version of the Sun compiler and by gcc: MyType& someFunc(int id) { // successful case here: // ... // fail case: return *static_cast<MyType*>(0); } // Use: ... MyType& mt = somefunc(myIdNum); if (&mt) // test for "null reference" { // whatever } ... I have been maintaining this code base for a while, but I find that I don't have as much time to look up the small details about the language as I would like. I've been digging through my reference book but the answer to this one eludes me. Now, I had a C++ course a few years ago, and therein we emphasized that in C++ everything is types, so I try to keep that in mind when thinking things through. Deconstructing the expression: "*static_cast(0);", it indeed seems to me that we take a literal zero, cast it to a pointer to MyType (which makes it a null pointer), and then apply the dereferencing operator in the context of assigning to a reference type (the return type), which should give me a reference to the same object pointed to by the pointer. This sure looks like returning a null reference to me. Any advice in explaining why this works (or why it shouldn't) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chuck

• Return cell reference as result of if statement with vlookups.

- by EMJ
I have two sets of data in excel. One contains a set of data which represents the initial step of a process. The other set of data represents the additional steps which take place after the first step is completed. Each of the data records in the "additional step data" has an id in a column. I need to find the identifying codes of the "additional step data" which correspond with the initial step data records. The problem is that I have to match the data in 4 columns between the two data sets and return the id of the "additional step data". I started by doing a combination of an if and vlookup functions, but I got stuck when I tried to figure out how to get the if statement to reference the id of the matching "additional step data". Basically I am trying to avoid having to search by manually filtering between two sets of data and finding corresponding records. Does anyone have any idea about how to do this?

• C++ standard: dereferencing NULL pointer to get a reference?

- by shoosh
I'm wondering about what the C++ standard says about code like this: int* ptr = NULL; int& ref = *ptr; int* ptr2 = &ref; In practice the result is that ptr2 is NULL but I'm wondering, is this just an implementation detail or is this well defined in the standard? Under different circumstances a dereferencing of a NULL pointer should result in a crash but here I'm dereferencing it to get a reference which is implemented by the compiler as a pointer so there's really no actual dereferencing of NULL.
