  • Why is verbosity bad for a programming language?

    I have seen many people around complaining about verbosity in programming languages. I find that, within some bounds, the more verbose a programming language is, the better it is to understand. I think that verbosity also reinforces writing clearer APIs for that particular language. The only disadvantage I can think of is that it makes you type more, but I mean, most people use IDEs that do all that work for you. so, What are possible downsides to a verbose programming language?

  • Sort rectangles in a grid based on a comparison of the center point of each

    If I have a grid of rectangles and I move one of the rectangles, say above and to the left of another rectangle, how would I resort the rectangles? Note the rectangles are in an array, so each rectangle has an index and a matching tag. All I really need to do is set the proper index based on the rectangles new center point position within the rectangle, as compared with the center point position of the other rectangles in the grid.     This is very basic question from programming point of view but as I am in learning phase, I thought I would better ask this question rather than having a misunderstanding or narrow knowledge about the topic. So do excuse me if somehow I mess it up. Question: Let's say I have class A,B,C and D now class A has some piece of code which I need to have in class B,C and D so I am extending class A in class B, class C, and class D Now how can I access the function of class A in other classes, do I need to create an object of class A and than access the function of class A or as am extending A in other classes than I can internally call the function using this parameter. If possible I would really appreciate if someone can explain this concept with code sample explaining how the logic flows. Note Example in Java, PHP and .Net would be appreciated.

    I'm looking for a Java library to help parse user entered text that represents an 'appointment' for a calendar application. For instance: Lunch with Mike at 11:30 on Tuesday or 5pm Happy hour on Friday I've found some promising leads like https://jchronic.dev.java.net/ and http://www.datejs.com/ which can parse dates - but I also need to be able to extract the title of the event like "Lunch with Mike".     I'm trying to program a Hebrew site with a search option. (old site and the charset of this site is windows-1255) I am using php 5.2 with Apache 2.2, on a Debian 5 (Lenny) with appropriate code pages enabled. I am using _POST to pass arguments to a script. If I pass English word to the script everything works, but when I use Hebrew nothing is passed through the POST function. When I use ECHO to show _POST, the variable is empty. What might be the problem? P.S. this is old site that worked fine on PHP 4 with debian 4, and the problem arised only after we upgrade to PHP5+debian5.

I don't see any set construction functions that take a IComparer<T> or comparison function: Set.ofSeq et al don't take a comparison function FSharpSet(IComparer<T> comparer, SetTree<T> tree) constructor is internal, because SetTree is internal and SetTreeModule.ofSeq<a>(IComparer<a> comparer, IEnumerable<a> c) is obviously internal too. My actual problem is that I have a set of ('a * 'a) and I want a comparison such that for example (1,3) = (3,1). I know I could wrap this in a type implementing IComparable<T>, but is there any way to avoid this?

  • Cross-platform and language (de)serialization

    I'm looking for a way to serialize a bunch of C++ structs in the most convenient way so that the serialization is portable across C++ and Java (at a minimum) and across 32bit/64bit, big/little endian platforms. The structures to be serialized just contain data, i.e. they're pure data objects with no state or behavior. The idea being that we serialize the structs into an octet blob that we can store in a database "generically" and be read out later on. Thus avoiding changing the database whenever a struct changes and also avoiding assigning each data member to a field - i.e. we only want one table to hold everything "generically" as a binary blob. This should make less work for developers and require less changes when structures change. I've looked at boost.serialize but don't think there's a way to enable compatibility with Java. And likewise for inheriting Serializable in Java. If there is a way to do it by starting with an IDL file that would be best as we already have IDL files that describe the structures.   • Do comments slow down an interpreted language?

    I am asking this because I use Python, but it could apply to other interpreted languages as well (ruby, php). Whenever I leave a comment in my code, is it slowing down the interpreter? My limited understanding of an interpreter is that it reads program expressions in as strings and converts those strings into code. It seems that every time it parses a comment, that is wasted time. Is this the case? Is there some convention for comments in interpreted languages, or is the effect negligible?

  • Improve Efficiency in Array comparison in Ruby

    Hi I am working on Ruby /cucumber and have an requirement to develop a comparison module/program to compare two files. Below are the requirements The project is a migration project . Data from one application is moved to another Need to compare the data from the existing application against the new ones. Solution : I have developed a comparison engine in Ruby for the above requirement. a) Get the data, de duplicated and sorted from both the DB's b) Put the data in a text file with "||" as delimiter c) Use the key columns (number) that provides a unique record in the db to compare the two files For ex File1 has 1,2,3,4,5,6 and file2 has 1,2,3,4,5,7 and the columns 1,2,3,4,5 are key columns. I use these key columns and compare 6 and 7 which results in a fail. Issue : The major issue we are facing here is if the mismatches are more than 70% for 100,000 records or more the comparison time is large. If the mismatches are less than 40% then comparison time is ok. Diff and Diff -LCS will not work in this case because we need key columns to arrive at accurate data comparison between two applications. Is there any other method to efficiently reduce the time if the mismatches are more thatn 70% for 100,000 records or more. Thanks

  • a newbie gcc compiler and c language question

    Hi, when I'm trying to compile my c program it gives me this error warning: integer constant is too large for 'long' type which refers to these lines int barcode, a, b, c; scanf("%d", &barcode); a = barcode / 1000000000000; b = barcode / 100000000000 % 10; c = barcode / 10000000000 % 10; and the rest is fine. I know I'm not supposed to use int for such a large number, any suggestions on what I should use? if I replace int with double what should the '%d' part be replaced with then?

    What is the real meaning of the "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use" dialog under Control Panel-Regional Settings-Advanced in WinXP and Win2003? According to the dialog text, Windows will use this to display the resource strings such as menus. The treatment of text files is application-specific, so this setting will not affect that. But can I expect any other change in behavior from this setting? Any insights into what is really going wrong?

  • How can I change the handwriting input language in Windows 7?

    I'm in a school where all students have tablet PCs, where they use the handwriting (text recognition) function quite a bit. Recently one of the language teachers has asked if they can enter French accents using this method - it seems that one definitely can using windows 7 ultimate, but we're using Pro. I understand that if one changes the entire input language, then this should work, but it doesn't seem to. Any ideas?
