• Logging *Business* Events - use logging framework?

  Hi, Something here doesn't feel right to me here, and so I would like the community's input - perhaps I am approaching this in the wrong way.... Q: Is is appropriate to use traditional infrastructure logging frameworks (like log4net) to log business events? When I say business events, I mean I want a global log like this: xx:xx Customer A purchased widget B. xx:xx Widget B was dispatched from warehouse. xx:xx Customer B payment declined. Most traditional infrastructure logging frameworks have event levels something like this: FATAL ERROR WARN INFO DEBUG An of course these messages don't fit well into that. Best description would be INFO, but of course these are important events, and INFO is of very low importance. I would still like this as a 'log' (e.g. I don't want to have to extract this from my business objects each time I want to see it) Seems to me I have two options: 1) Use a framework like log4net and just define a special logger for this (and live with the fact that it doesn't feel right). 2) Provide a service for performing this that doesn't rely on a traditional logging services. I'm leaning towards 2. What has anyone else done in a similar situations? Thanks!

• Hiding/blocking tabs using windows forms in c#

  What is the best/easiest way to build a minimal task queue system for Linux using bash and common tools? I have a file with 9'000 lines, each line has a bash command line, the commands are completely independent. command 1 > Logs/1.log command 2 > Logs/2.log command 3 > Logs/3.log ... My box has more than one core and I want to execute X tasks at the same time. I searched the web for a good way to do this. Apparently, a lot of people have this problem but nobody has a good solution so far. It would be nice if the solution had the following features: can interpret more than one command (e.g. command; command) can interpret stream redirects on the lines (e.g. ls > /tmp/ls.txt) only uses common Linux tools Bonus points if it works on other Unix-clones without too exotic requirements.

  I was wondering if there's a tool or a component for Delphi that can trace method execution line by line and create a log file. With this kind of tool it is easy to compare how method performs on two sets of input data by comparing two log files. EDIT: Let's say there is a function 10: function MyFunction(aInput: Integer): Integer; 11: begin 12: if aInput 10 then 13: Result := 10 14: else 15: Result := 0; 16: end; I'm looking for a tool that would give the log which whould be similar to the following: When aInput parameter is 1: Line 10: 'function MyFunction(aInput: Integer): Integer;' Line 11: 'begin' Line 12: 'if aInput 10 then' Line 15: 'Result := 0;' Line 16: 'end;' and when aInput parameter is 11: Line 10: 'function MyFunction(aInput: Integer): Integer;' Line 11: 'begin' Line 12: 'if aInput 10 then' Line 13: 'Result := 10;' Line 16: 'end;' The only information that should be required by the tool is the function name. It's like stepping through the method under debugger, but in an automatic manner with logging every line of code.

• How to post to a request using node.js

  I am trying to post some json to a URL. I saw various other questions about this on stackoverflow but none of them seemed to be clear or work. I tried to pull the request url but it is null. I am just starting with nodejs so please be nice.

• LinqToSQL not updating database

  Hi. I created a database and dbml in visual studio 2010 using its wizards. Everything was working fine until i checked the tables data (also in visual studio server explorer) and none of my updates were there. using (var context = new CenasDataContext()) { context.Log = Console.Out; context.Cenas.InsertOnSubmit(new Cena() { id = 1}); context.SubmitChanges(); } This is the code i am using to update my database. At this point my database has one table with one field (PK) named ID. *INSERT INTO [dbo].Cenas VALUES (@p0) -- @p0: Input Int (Size = -1; Prec = 0; Scale = 0) [1] -- Context: SqlProvider(Sql2008) Model: AttributedMetaModel Build: 4.0.30319.1* This is LOG from the execution (printed the context log into the console). The problem i'm having is that these updates are not persistent in the database. I mean that when i query my database (visual studio server explorer - new query) i see the table is empty, every time. I am using a SQL Server database file (.mdf).

• How long do you keep session cookies around for?

  Hi, I'm implementing a web app, which uses sessions. I'm using GWT and app engine as my client/server, but I don't think they're doing anything really different than I would do with PHP and apache etc. When a user logs into my web app, I am using HttpSession to start a session for them. I get the session id like this: // From my login servlet: getThreadLocalRequest().getSession(false).getId(); I return the sessionId back to the client, and they store it in a cookie. The tutorial I'm using sets this cookie to 'expire' in two weeks: Cookie.write("sid", theSessionId, 1000 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 14); // two weeks Here's where I'm confused: if the cookie expires in two weeks, then my user will go along using the webapp happily, only to one day browse to my site and be shown a login screen. What are my options? Can I just set no expiration time for this cookie? That way the user would have to explicitly log out, otherwise they could just use the app forever without having to log back in? Or is there a better way to do this? I can't remember sites like Twitter having ever asked me to log back in again. I seem to be permanently logged in. Do they just set no expiration? The webapp isn't protecting any sort of highly sensitive data, so I don't mind leaving a cookie that doesn't expire, but it seems like there must be a better way? • Rails redirections with new users and logins

  So I'm trying to get the user to return to the page they were looking at before they click "log in" This is what I got in my user application controller: def redirect_back_or_default(default) redirect_to(session[:return_to] || default) session[:return_to] = nil end And this is what I have in my sessions controller: def new @user_session = UserSession.new session[:return_to] = request.referer end end def create @user_session = UserSession.new(params[:user_session]) if @user_session.save flash[:notice] = "Login successful!" redirect_back_or_default(home_path) else render :action => :new end end This works fine most of the time but if a user logs in right after they register to the site, they will get redirected to a blank page. I imagine this is the "create" action because it was the last action before going to user sessions new. So I tried this: def new @user_session = UserSession.new unless request.referer == join_path session[:return_to] = request.referer end end And this tries to take me back to the login page after I log in. What I'd really like to do is have the user see their profile when they log in for the very first time. This wouldn't give me a user id and raised a routing error def create @user_session = UserSession.new(params[:user_session]) if @user_session.save flash[:notice] = "Login successful!" redirect_back_or_default(user_path(current_user)) else render :action => :new end end Anybody gone through these redirecting acrobatics before? I can't seem to get it to work. I'm using authlogic if that helps.

• Cannot exit in CodeIgniter constructor

  I'm basically trying a session control. If the user is logged in, it's ok to move on. But if he's not logged in, then it will show a log-in screen and then die. However, when I use die or exit in the constructor, it does not show the log-in screen; it immediately dies. The code is as following: private $username = null; private $mongoid = null; private $neoid = null; public function __construct(){ parent::__construct(); // session to global $this->username = $this->session->userdata( 'username'); $this->mongoid = $this->session->userdata( 'mongoid'); $this->neoid = $this->session->userdata( 'neoid'); // check if user is logged in if( $this->username == "" || empty( $this->username)){ $this->load->view( 'access/login'); die; } } It shows the log-in page if die is not written there, but with die, it does not show. Why do I want to use die? Because if I don't use, it moves on the index function and I don't want it to execute index function if the user is not logged in. What is wrong here? What should I use to stop executing?

• Evaluating Javascript Arrays

  I have an array that contains an array of arrays if that makes any sense. so for example: [[1, 2, 3], [2, 3, 4], [3, 4, 5], [4, 5, 6]] I want to see whether an array exists withing the array, so if [1, 2, 3] is duplicated at all. I have tried to use the .indexOf method but it does find the duplicate. I have also tried Extjs to loop through the array manually and to evaluate each inner array, this is how I did it: var arrayToSearch = [[1, 2, 3], [2, 3, 4], [3, 4, 5], [4, 5, 6]]; var newArray = [1, 2, 3]; Ext.each(arrayToSearch, function(entry, index){ console.log(newArray, entry); if(newArray == entry){ console.log(index); }; }); This also does not detect the duplicate. the console.log will output [1, 2, 3] and [1, 2, 3] but will not recognize them as equal. I have also tried the === evaluator but obviously since == doesn't work the === wont work. I am at wits end, any suggestions.

Now is my next question, i need to get that file filled with the following: svn co http://repo.com/svn/test C:\users\twan\desktop\pres\_temp cd C:\users\twan\desktop\pres\_temp svn log -v --xml > logfile.log copy C:\users\twan\desktop\statsvn.jar C:\users\twan\desktop\pres\_temp cd .. java -jar _temp\statsvn.jar C:\users\twan\desktop\pres\_temp/logfile.log C:\users\twan\desktop\pres\_temp rmdir /s /Q _temp The actual idea is that this script is written into the sh file, and all the _temp and other locations are replaced by the vars i get from textfields etc. so c:\users\twan\desktop\pres_temp would be a var called tempDirStr that i get from my inputfields. (i know these cmomands and locations are windows based, im doing this with a friend and he made a .net counterpart of the application. Can you guys help me out?:D thanks in advance!

• TabHost disappears after locking the phone and reopening it:

  I have a weird issue with my TabHost in my FragmentActivity that contains a ViewPager. The problem is that when I close my phone (press the power button) while I use my application, and then I turn back the phone and my application gets reopened, at this point my TabHost is missing. So the closing of my phone is causes the TabHost to disappear. • Transitioning from Domain Authentication to SQL Server Authentication

  Greetings all, I've run into a problem that has me stumped. I've put together a database in SQL Server Express, and I'm having a strange permissions problem. The database is on my development machine with a domain user: DOMAIN\albertp. My development database server is set for "SQL Server and Windows Authentication" mode. I can edit and query my database without any problems when I log in using Windows Authentication. However, when I log in to any user that uses SQL Server authentication (Including sa) I get this message when I run queries against my database. SELECT * FROM [Testing].[dbo].[AuditingReport] I get: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 Login failed for user 'auditor'. I'm logged into the server from SQL Server Management Studio as 'auditor' and I don't see anything in the error log about the login failure. I've already run: Use Testing; Grant All to auditor; Go And I still get the same error. What permissions do I have to set for the database to be usable by others outside of my personal domain login? Or am I looking at the wrong problem? My ultimate goal is to have the database be accessible from a set of PHP pages, using a either a common login (hence 'auditor') or a login specific to a set of individual users.

  I'm sure someone can explain this. we have an application that has been in production for an year. recently we saw an increase in number of support requests for people having difficulty signing into the system. after scratching our head because we couldn't recreate the problem in development, we decided we'll switch on debug logger in production for a month. that was june 5th. application worked fine with the above change and we were waiting. then yesterday we noticed that the log files were getting huge so we made another change in production config.logger = Logger.new("#{RAILS_ROOT}/log/production.log", 50, 1048576) after this change, the application started crashing while processing a particular file. this particular line of code was RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER.info "Payment Information Request: ", request.inspect as you can see there was a comma instead of a plus sign. this piece of code was introduced in Mar. the question is this: why did the application fail now? if changing the debug level caused the application to process this line of code it should have started failing on june 5th! why today. please someone help us. Are we missing the obvious here? if you dont have an answer, at least let us know we aren't the only one that are bonkers.

  If I have a soundbank stored in a JAR, how would I load that soundbank into my application using resource loading...? I'm trying to consolidate as much of a MIDI program into the jar file as I can, and the last thing I have to add is the soundbank file I'm using, as users won't have the soundbanks installed. I'm trying to put it into my jar file, and then load it with getResource() in the Class class, but I'm getting an InvalidMidiDataException on a soundbank that I know is valid. • Server returns 500 error only when called by Java client using urlConnection/httpUrlConnection

  Hi - I'm having a very strange problem. I'm trying to call a servlet (JSP) with an HTTP GET and a few parameters (http://mydomain.com/method?param1=test&param2=123). If I call it from the browser or via WGET in a bash session, it works fine. However, when I make the exact same call in a Java client using urlConnection or httpURLConnection, the server returns a 500 error. I've tried everything I have found online including: urlConn.setRequestProperty("Accept-Language", "en-us,en;q=0.5"); Nothing I've tried, however, has worked. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the server I'm calling so I can't see the logs.   I understand that the result set from web sql isn't quite an array, more of an object? I'm cycling through a result set and to speed things up I'd like to remove a row once it's been found. I've tried "delete" and "splice", the former does nothing and the latter throws an error.   A very simple java code inside a doGet() servlet is getting more than a second of cpu time on GAE. That seems to be a very simple request and still is using more than a second of cpu. What I am missing?

  I am relatively new to MEF so I don't fully understand the capabilities. I'm trying to achieve something similar to Unity's InjectionMember. Let's say I have a class that imports MEF parts. For the sake of simplicity, let's take the following class as an example of the exported part. [Export] [PartCreationPolicy(CreationPolicy.NonShared)] public class Logger { public string Category { get; set; } public void Write(string text) { } } public class MyViewModel { [Import] public Logger Log { get; set; } } Now what I'm trying to figure out is if it's possible to specify a value for the Category property at the import. Why does the message "lose" it's data when being send to the thread? Has it something to do with the notify? Thanks for your help
