• Why can't I upgrade my kernel via the terminal?

  If I type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I can only see that the kernel packages are kept back, and not installed. As the screenshot shows. If I then start the update manager I can install the kernel, with no problems at all. As the second screenshot shows. Why is this? The kernel is a new package and not an upgrade of an old one, this is why you can't use the command upgrade that upgrades packages. You need to use the command dist-upgrade to install new packages.

• Unity Launcher Does Not Remember Favorites

  I have already looked at the similar questions, but none of the solutions there worked for me. Basically, I can edit and remove icons just fine when I am in a session, but the next time I am logged in, they are reset to the default. Even more perplexing is this. If I start dconf-editor, and navigate to desktopunitylauncher, it shows the favorites that are supposed to be there, yet the default ones are still in the Launcher. I have already tried sudo apt-get purge unity and then sudo apt-get install unity from a GNOME session, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Edit: I also tried running gksudo dconf-editor to run the program with elevated privileges. Again I navigated to desktopunitylauncher. This time the default string was there, but when I tried to edit it, it would not change to what I typed.

• Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out. • Windows apps keep switching to accented text

  Somehow I keep hitting a shortcut key (or something similar) that enables the input of accented text. Whenever this accented text mode is enabled, pressing ' doesn't respond immediately; instead, the ' key is remembered, so if I press a vowel after that, I get the vowel with an acute accent mark, and if I press any other key, I immediately get an apostrophe followed by the other key. I don't want this to happen. It's very annoying. How do I disable this mode? I only remember seeing this in Firefox 3.6.3 and Pidgin 2.6.6, so maybe it's a GTK feature. It apparently happens on a per-application basis, and restarting the application fixes it. I checked Windows 7's "Region and Language" control panel and didn't see anything relevant (although I'm not intimately familiar with all of those settings, so I may have overlooked something).

In windows, to right click any where - or to bring up a pop up menu we just type a key right beside on window key / pop-up key or press Shift + F10 to bring up pop up any where. • OpenVPN stopped working, what could have happened?

  I have Openvpn, and it worked great when I used it on PC (Windows 8), then I copied all files (Certificates and config) to an Android 4 phone to use them. Now, Openvpn works on the phone, but not the PC. Specifically, when I open Google I get: The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed, but the VPN seems to be connected. I have a simple question, could the problem be because I copied the same files?   I have installed an Ubuntu Server. It obviously comes with no graphical interface. I tried to install it with: apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm Then I got an error message trying to login with Gnome and eventually I uninstalled everything: apt-get remove xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm However, it seems Ubuntu still has some scripts trying to launch Gnome since when starting I get: Starting GNOME Display Manager fail ... Stopping system v run level compatibility And the system stops forever (I know I can use ALT+F1) What should I modify to have this completely uninstalled? I cannit find anything on the rc2.d...

• Backup those keys, citizen

  Periodically I back up the keys within my servers and databases, and when I do, I blog a reminder here. This should be part of your standard backup rotation – the keys should be backed up often enough to have at hand and again when they change. The first key you need to back up is the Service Master Key, which each Instance already has built-in. You do that with the BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. The second set of keys are the Database Master Keys, stored per database, if you’ve created one. You can back those up with the BACKUP MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. Finally, you can use the keys to create certificates and other keys – those should also be backed up. Read more about those here. Anyway, the important part here is the backup. • Dual Screen with 12.04 ATI randr extension is not present

  Here's my problem I have two screens. One is a 22"led monitor and the other is 42 inch led tv. In windows 7 I run xbmc on the second monitor. I'm trying to mimic the same function in setting xbmc to display on the tv only. So I installed the latest x64 linux drivers from ATI. I configured (using the catalyst control panel) using single display (multi desktop) I then got a white screen with black x so I enable xinerama. with xinerama enable I got the displays to work correctly, however I received an error when I tried to enter display settings to change the launcher location. the error message was " "randr extension not present =" So I tried to install libxandr2 using terimal but here's what I get trev@Lrig:~$ sudo get-apt install libxander2 [sudo] password for trev: sudo: get-apt: command not found I'm at a loss now because I can't find a solution for the xandr error message. • Battery Indicator Missing

• Add static route through DHCP

  I'm trying to get an OSX Lion Server to provide a static route to its clients (all OSX Lion) over DHCP. I can't get the client to actually apply the static route. So far, I've managed to get the DHCP server (BOOTPD) to actually serve the DHCP OPTION 33 (static_route) on the DHCP offers by editing /etc/bootpd.plist and adding something like: <key>dhcp_option_33</key> <data>[some base64 goes here]</data> .. and restarting the DHCP service. On the client I've managed to get the client to actually request the dhcp option by modifying and adding option 33 to the DHCPRequestedParameterList key: <key>DHCPRequestedParameterList</key> <array> ... keys snipped for brevity ... <integer>33</integer> </array> .. and rebooting the client. This makes the client request the static_route option from the DHCP server ( i can see the proper output in ipconfig getpacket en0 ) but it doesn't actually apply the rule. Has anyone ever succeeded in applying static_route options on OSX clients through DHCP?

• Gvim on Windows 7: ALT codes not working

  I would like to be able to enter ALT codes in Gvim on Windows 7 as documented on the following site: Alt Codes On Windows (Windows 7 in my case), to generate a character via an ALT code you make sure that the NumLock key on your keypad is toggled on, hold down the ALT key, enter the keycode on the numeric keypad, and then release the ALT key. However this does not work in Gvim on Windows (which ignores the fact that I am pressing the ALT key and just prints to entered keypad key directly onto the screen). How can I get these keystroke combinations to work in Gvim as well? Thanks. EDIT: As the answer below points out, the way to insert non-ASCII characters for which you do not have entries on your keyboard without changing the keyboard layout is as follows: Make sure you are in insert mode, and then type CTRL-V followed by the Unicode character code of interest, for instance: CTRL-V u00E0 (generates à) CTRL-V u00C8 (generates È) CTRL-V u00E8 (generates è) CTRL-V u00E9 (generates é) CTRL-V u00EC (generates ì) CTRL-V u00F2 (generates ò) etc... • How to upgrade server from 8.10 to newer version?

  I have a server still running Ubuntu 8.10. If I run apt-get update I get a bunch of 404 errors on the packages. I've asked a few questions on Server Fault but got nowhere. Here's what I've done: Run apt-get update which returns errors like: Err http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages 404 Not Found [and same for many other packages] Run do-release-upgrade which returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release Failed Upgrade tool signature Failed Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'jaunty.tar.gz' Failed to extract Extracting the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. Edited /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and changed from Prompt=normal to Prompt=lts (as suggested here). Running do-release-upgrade after this returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release current dist not found in meta-release file No new release found So basically, it seems like I cannot upgrade because my current distro is out of date and not supported. Is there a way to upgrade direct to 10.x or 11.x?

• mutt, smime, decrypt with one of two different keys

  This is an odd one. We want to have an encrypted e-mail list. There are a few ways to do this, but in the interim what we've done is created a public/private keypair via openssl for our e-mail list ([email protected]) and then distributed the public/private keypair amongst the list participants (ugh). When someone posts to the list, they encrypt using the lists public key, and everyone has the private key (ugh) so it 'works'. MUAs like Outlook and Thunderbird work with this setup. Mutt has a problem though - it seems to only decrypt a SMIME message with a private key that is specified by your e-mail. So when someone sends an e-mail to the list e-mail, my MUA won't decrypt it. How can I tell Mutt about this second private key?

  Has anyone had luck installing netdisco through apt-get? I couldn't get it to work. I tried netdisco-frontend, netdisco-backend, netdisco-common, netdisco-installer. I used the command: sudo apt-get install netdisco-common netdisco-frontend netdisco-backend Everything installed fine, but I can't get it running. It doesn't seem to have install to /usr/local/netdisco/. I have looked all over the internet and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. I use server 12.04. Thanks!

• How does eMail encryption work?

  I have been going over YouTube watching videos on eMail encryption and everyone seems to explain it from a different perspective. Some do it for a CompTIA exam while others just provide a primer. Here is what I understood: Step1: You compose an email that you want to send. Without encryption, it will be simple ASCII text that will be visible to anyone along the way. Step2: You generate a digital signature to make sure that nobody gets to re-transmit your email and claim it was you. Digital Signature is generated using Sender's private key which is usually a hash of the password and is then combined with the original message to form one long hash string. These signatures are one-time-use-only and a new one is calculated for every email. Step 3: You encrypt the compose of your email using Receiver's public key so that the only person who can read it is the intended receiver using their private key Step 4: When you hit the send the email, what is transmitted now is gibberish to everyone apart from the intended receiver who will decrypt is using their private key And there are various ways to do it like PEM, PGP, etc. Correct me where I am wrong or refine where necessary.

• Multiple client connecting to master MySQL over SSL

  I successfully configured a MySQL replication over SSL between 2 servers accross the internet. Now I want a second server in the same location as the replication slave, to open a connection to the master db over ssl. I used the same command found here http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-create-certs.html to generate a new set of client-cert.pem and client-key.pem with the same master db ca-cert/key.pem and I also used a different Common Name. When I try to initiate a connection between this new server and the master db, it fails : mysql -hmasterdb -utestssl -p --ssl-ca=/var/lib/mysql/newcerts/ca-cert.pem --ssl-cert=/var/lib/mysql/newcerts/client-cert.pem --ssl-key=/var/lib/mysql/newcerts/client-key.pem ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error It's working without SSL.

• Restoring Windows 2008 Server X86 and X64

  Restoring Windows 2008 Server (Domain Controller) We are using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to Image our DC. Now this software has a feature to convert the backup into a vmware or hyper-v VM I have also used disk2vhd to convert one of our dc's to a vhd and when I connected it into Hyper-V, it booted fine, I can login - BUT :-) As soon as I login, I get the activation error, that change product key, this product key isn't good for this machine etc. Question is : When in a real recovery situation, what would be the procedure to restore it either virtual or onto a physical box but be able to login and change product key etc ? In this scenario its just locked down and I cant' do anything, if this is the case, how would I replicate my production environment via these tools ? Any Ideas ? Will be grateful for some real world examples here. Same thing happens with our exchange backup / test restore either physical or virtual, can login but nothing else. Now we don't have the keys as they are OEM keys and just wondering what will happen in a real scenario, would we be purchasing another KEY or using the OEM key on our new server ? This is a test environment I am trying to create by restoring our backups either into hyper-v or physical test machines. Also, If I build up a machine (Server 2008) in a VM (Hyper-V), How can I restore just the system state backup of my DC into it ? will that give me the activation error too ? even though I would use the TRIAL ISOs provided by Microsoft ? • Cannot get debconf version after delete /var/lib/dpkg

  As a new ubuntu user, I just make a mistaken. I've deleted a folder /var/lib/dpkg/ instead of /var/lib/dpkg/lock :) Now when I execute apt-get -f install then it will display error message: ... E: Cannot get debconf version. Is debconf installed? debconf: apt-extracttemplates failed: No such file or directory ... I've try this tutorial: http://people.adams.edu/~cdmiller/posts/Ubuntu-dpkg-recovery/ but still no luck. How can I fix this issue?

However if I copy and paste the same command generated by the script everything works... • Sound is not working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this is my own fault. But what i did was this first i wrote this command 'sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio' and then i wrote again 'sudo apt-get install pulseaudio' and now the sound doesn't work properly And the Indicator doesn't work either, it's just grayed out. The shortcuts are not working either. • Deleting a row from self-referencing table

  Came across this the other day and thought “this would be a great interview question!” I’d created a table with a self-referencing foreign key. The application was calling a stored procedure I’d created to delete a row which caused but of course…a foreign key exception. You may say “why not just use a the cascade delete option?” Good question, easy answer. With a typical foreign key relationship between different tables which would work. However, even SQL Server cannot do a cascade delete of a row on a table with self-referencing foreign key.
