• MSSQL: Copying data from one database to another

  I have database that has data imported from another server using import and export wizard of SQL Server Management Studio. There is also empty database with same tables but it also has primary keys, foreign keys and indexes. How to get data from first database to another? Here is the description of my crusade. And believe me – it is not nice one. Bugs in import and export wizard There is some awful bugs in import and export wizard that makes data imports and exports possible only on very limited manner: wizard is not able to analyze foreign keys, wizard wants to create tables always, whatever you say in settings. The result is faulty and useless package. Now let’s go step by step and make things work in our scenario. Database There are two databases. Let’s name them like this: PLAIN – contains data imported from remote server (no indexes, no keys, no nothing, just plain dumb data) CORRECT – empty database with same structure as remote database (indexes, keys and everything else but no data) Our goal is to get data from PLAIN to CORRECT. 1. Create import and export package In this point we will create faulty SSIS package using SQL Server Management Studio. Run import and export wizard and let it create SSIS package that reads data from CORRECT and writes it to, let’s say, CORRECT-2. Make sure you enable identity insert. Make sure there are no views selected. Make sure you don’t let package to create tables (you can miss this step because it wants to create tables anyway). Save package to SSIS. 2. Modify import and export package Now let’s clean up the package and remove all faulty crap. Connect SQL Server Management Studio to SSIS instance. Select the package you just saved and export it to your hard disc. Run Business Intelligence Studio. Create new SSIS project (DON’T MISS THIS STEP). Add package from disc as existing item to project and open it. Move to Control Flow page do one of following: Remove all preparation SQL-tasks and connect Data Flow tasks. Modify all preparation SQL-tasks so the existence of tables is checked before table is created (yes, you have to do it manually). Add new Execute-SQL task as first task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? NOCHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'DELETE FROM ?' GO   Save task. Add new Execute-SQL task as last task in control flow: Open task properties. Assign destination connection as connection to use. Insert the following SQL as command:   EXEC sp_MSForEachTable 'ALTER TABLE ? CHECK CONSTRAINT ALL' GO   Save task Now connect first Execute-SQL task with first Data Flow task and last Data Flow task with second Execute-SQL task. Now move to Package Explorer tab and change connections under Connection Managers folder. Make source connection to use database PLAIN. Make destination connection to use database CORRECT. Save package and rebuilt the project. Update package using SQL Server Management Studio. Some hints: Make sure you take the package from solution folder because it is saved there now. Don’t overwrite existing package. Use numeric suffix and let Management Studio to create a new version of package. Now you are done with your package. Run it to test it and clean out all the errors you find. TRUNCATE vs DELETE You can see that I used DELETE FROM instead of TRUNCATE. Why? Because TRUNCATE has some nasty limits (taken from MSDN): “You cannot use TRUNCATE TABLE on a table referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint; instead, use DELETE statement without a WHERE clause. Because TRUNCATE TABLE is not logged, it cannot activate a trigger. TRUNCATE TABLE may not be used on tables participating in an indexed view.” As I am not sure what tables you have and how they are used I provided here the solution that should work for all scenarios. If you need better performance then in some cases you can use TRUNCATE table instead of DELETE. Conclusion My conclusion is bitter this time although I am very positive guy. It is A.D. 2010 and still we have to write stupid hacks for simple things. Simple tools that existed before are long gone and we have to live mysterious bloatware that is our only choice when using default tools. If you take a look at the length of this posting and the count of steps I had to do for one easy thing you should treat it as a signal that something has went wrong in last years. Although I got my job done I would be still more happy if out of box tools are more intelligent one day. • Can't update textbox in TinyMCE

  I'm using TinyMCE, the text area is replaced with a TextBox, but when I try to update the database with the new text from my textbox, it wont update. Can anyone help me?   Hi I have created jdbc mysql connection. my program works fine for simple execution of query. But if i run the same program for more than 10 hour and execute query then i receives the following mysql exception. I have not used close() method anywhere. i created database connection and opened it forever and always execute query. there is no where that i explicitly mentioned timeout for connection. i am unable to identify the problem com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Connection.close() has already been called. • Can't connect twice to linked table using ACE/JET driver

  I'm trying to connect to an MS Access database linked table in VBScript. It works fine connecting the first time on one connection but if I close that connection and open a new one in the same script it gives me an error. test.vbs(13, 1) Microsoft Office Access Database Engine: ODBC--connection to '{Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}DB_NAME' failed. This is some code that triggers the error. TABLE_1 is an ODBC linked table in the test.mdb file. • Some questions about setting up Amazon S3 with Ruby on Rails

  I'm trying to setup Amazon S3 hosting with my Ruby on Rails 3 app, which is hosted on Heroku. After reading these instructions in the Heroku docs, I'm trying to use the aws-s3 gem. The instructions say to put the S3 account details in config/amazon_s3.yml, but the aws-s3 Github page says you create a connection like this: AWS::S3::Base.establish_connection!( :access_key_id => 'abc', :secret_access_key => '123' ) Why is the connection created by providing the details if they're already provided in the config file? Is that not the correct way to establish a connection? Do I have to establish a connection for each user everytime an upload is about to occur, or is a connection established for the application as a whole? Thanks for reading.

  Hi All I just setup up member ship roles and registration on my website with visual web developer using the tutorial on msdn.   in C# when a sockets connection is terminated the other node is informed of this before terminating the link thus the remaning node can update the connection status. in Java when i terminate a communication link the other node keeps reporting the connection as valid. do i need to implement a read cycle (makes sense) that reports the connection as lost when it recieves a -1 during read (in C# this is 0 i think)? thank you for your insight. EDIT: thanks to you both. as i suspected and mentioned in my post that an additional check is required to confirm the connected state of a connection.

Is there any advantage to using using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) { // dostuff } } instead of using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conStr)) { SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(); // dostuff } Obviously it does matter run more than one command with the same connection, since closing an SqlDataReader is more efficient than closing and reopening a connection (calling conn.Close();conn.Open(); will also free up the connection). I see many people insist that failure to close the DataReader means leaving open connection resources around, but doesn't that only apply if you don't close the connection?

Basically I specified that the ship only moves when the right/left key is down, however the ship is moving constantly to the direction of the key pressed, it never stops although it should only move while my key is down. Even more weird behavior, when I press the opposite key the ship completely stops no matter what else I press. What's wrong with the code? Why does the ship move constantly even after I specified it only moves when a key is down?

  I'm supporting an old vb.net program whose database it connected to was moved from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. Is there a setting on SQL Server 2008 which will allow ODBC connections to access the database but not allow VB.NET to connect to it programmatically? the error i keep receiving in the app is: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.   My task is to simulate activity of couple of persons. Each of them has few activities to perform in some random time: fast (0-5s), medium(5-10s), slow(10-20s) and very slow(20-30s). • Introducing MySQL for Excel

  As part of the new product initiatives of the MySQL on Windows group we released a tool that makes the task of getting data in and out of a MySQL Database very friendly and intuitive, and we paired it with one of the preferred applications for data analysis and manipulation in Windows platforms, MS Excel. Welcome to MySQL for Excel, an add-in that is installed and accessed from within the MS Excel’s Data tab offering a wizard-like interface arranged in an elegant yet simple way to help users browse MySQL Schemas, Tables, Views and Procedures and perform data operations against them using MS Excel as the vehicle to drive the data in and out MySQL Databases. One of the coolest features we had in mind designing MySQL for Excel is simplicity. MS Excel is simple and easy to work with, thus liked by many Windows users because they don’t have to be software gurus to use it.  We applied the same principle by targeting MySQL for Excel to any kind of user, so if you are already familiarized with Excel’s interface you will find yourself working with MySQL data in no time. MySQL for Excel is shipped within the MySQL Installer as one of the tools in the suite; if prerequisites are already installed (.NET Framework 4.0, Visual Studio Tools for Office 4.0 and of course MS Office), installing the add-in involves a very few clicks and no further setup to use it. Being an Excel Add-In there is no executable file involved after the installation, running MS Excel and opening the add-in from its Data tab is all that is required. MySQL for Excel automatically integrates with MySQL Workbench (if installed) to share the same connections to MySQL Server installations, that way connections are defined just once in either product saving time.  Opening the Add-In brings the Welcome Panel at the right side of the Excel main window from which connections to MySQL Servers are shown grouped by Local VS Remote connections; then users can open any of those connections by double-clicking it and entering the password of the used account.  Additionally a user can create a connection by clicking on the New Connection action label or edit connections through MySQL Workbench (if installed) by clicking on the Manage Connections action label. Once a connection is opened, the Schema Selection panel is shown, at the top of it the selected connection (connection name, hostname/IP and username). Just below, a list of schemas is displayed where User Schemas are grouped first followed by System Schemas; users can double-click any selected schema to go to the next panel or select a schema and clicking the Next > button. Users can alternatively click on the < Back button to go back to the Welcome Panel to close the current connection and open a new one; also by clicking the Create New Schema action label they can create an empty new schema. Once a schema is opened the DB Object Selection panel is shown, this is actually the place where the fun stuff happens; from here users are able to perform actions against MySQL Tables, Views and Procedures. ">The actions available here are about importing data from a MySQL Table, View or Procedure to Excel, exporting Excel data to a new MySQL Table, appending Excel data to an existing MySQL Table or editing a MySQL Table’s data by using an Excel Worksheet as a user interface to update data in any row/column, insert new rows or delete existing rows in a very easy and friendly way.   Ubuntu 12.04 host – Virtualbox 4.1.12 Guest=Windows 7 – Network will not connect. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5742-7645 laptop with 4GB memory, Intel Core i3 processor, Intel HD Graphics, DVD drive, 802.1 b/g/n, and 500 GB HD. I connect to my router via a wireless connection. I have installed Virutalbox 4.1.12 from the Ubuntu Software Center and installed Guest additions 4.1.12 in the Windows 7 guest session. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 installed as guests in Virtual box The network settings are different for XP and 7 – see below. Network Settings XP guest = Adapter 1: PCnet-FAST III (NAT) - Network works perfectly and has worked well for several years. Network Settings Win 7 = Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged adapter, eth1) Promiscuous Mode = allow all Cable connected = checked When I originally installed Windows 7, I tried NAT and the guest network would not connect. Once I changed the setting to the above (Bridged) the Network worked perfectly. However, what I believe is after updates (not sure if it was an Ubuntu or Windows update) the guest network stopped working and I can not get it to connect. • Socket.ReceiveAsync problem

  Hi, I have a problem using SocketAsyncEventArgs model with .net sockets. Everything works great until the moment that the server wishes to close a client connection. I use following code for this: try { socket.Shutdown(SocketShutdown.Both); } catch { } // throws if client process has already closed finally { socket.Close(); } socket = null; Each connection is using two SocketAsyncEventArgs (one for send and one for receive) and after closing the connection they are returned to a pool from which they can be later reused. And here the problem starts, because when another connection is established and receive args are reused from the pool we get an exception: System.InvalidOperationException: "An asynchronous socket operation is already in progress using this SocketAsyncEventArgs instance."; at System.Net.Sockets.SocketAsyncEventArgs.StartOperationCommon(Socket socket) at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.ReceiveAsync(SocketAsyncEventArgs e) I've done some debugging and it appears that the connection closing code from the beginning of the question does not cancel Socket.ReceiveAsync operation that is in progress when the connection is closed. I've tried many combinations of Shutdown, Disconnect and Linger options for the socket but nothing worked. Any suggestions? Thanks

And what I find suspicious is the following error in my app log: .NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed to compile: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\Tools\VDT\DataProjects.dll . Error code = 0x8007000b In MS connect this is reported as a bug but MS is unable to reproduce the problem altough when you search the fora I'm not the only one with this problem. So any help is appreciated.
