Is it is possible to make cmd.exe work with UTF-8? This question is not about display, s about stdin/stdout/stderr redirection and Unicode. I am looking for a solution that would allow you to: redirect the output of the internal commands to a file using UTF-8 redirect output of external commands supporting Unicode to the files but encoded as UTF-8. If it is impossible to obtain this kind of consistence using batch files, is there another way of solving this problem, like using python scripting for this? In this case, I would like to know if it is possible to do the Unicode detection alone (user using the scripting should not remember if the called tools will output Unicode or not, it will just expect to convert the output to UTF-8. For simplicity we'll assume that if the tool output is not-Unicode it will be considered as UTF-8 (no codepage conversion).

• Webclient using download file to grab file from server - handling exceptions

  Hello everyone, I have a web service in which I am manipulating POST and GET methods to facilitate upload / download functionality for some files in a client/server style architecture. Basically the user is able to click a button to download a specific file, make some changes in the app, then click upload button to send it back. Problem I am having is with the download. Say the user expects 3 files 1.txt, 2.txt and 3.txt. Except 2.txt does not exist on the server. So the problem I have is that when I run the application, and I use a WebClient on client side to use DownloadFile method which then uses the code I have above, I get: WebException was unhandled: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error. (While debugging) If I attach to the browser and use http://localhost:xxx/1.txt I can step through server side code and throw the exception as intended. So I guess I'm wondering how I can handle the internal server error on the client side properly so I can return something meaningful like "File doesn't exist". One thought was to use a try catch around the WebClient.DownloadFile(address, filename) method but i'm not sure thats the only error that will occur i.e. the file doesn't exist.

• ASP.NET 2.0 app runs on Win 2003 in IIS 5 isolation mode but not in (default) IIS 6 mode

  The app uses DLLImport to call a legacy unmanaged dll. Let's call this dll Unmanaged.dll for the sake of this question. Unmanaged.dll has dependencies on 5 other legacy dll's. All of the legacy dll's are placed in the WebApp/bin/ directory of my ASP.NET application. When IIS is running in 5.0 isolation mode, the app works fine - calls to the legacy dll are processed without error. When IIS is running in the default 6.0 mode, the app is able to initiate the Unmanaged.dll (InitMe()), but dies during a later call to it (ProcessString()). I'm pulling my hair out here. I've moved the unmanaged dll's to various locations, tried all kinds of security settings and searched long and hard for a solution. Help! • Memory leak when using Workflow 4.0 SqlWorkflowInstanceStore and PersistableIdleAction.Unload

  Hi, This particular problem is driving me nuts. I wonder if anyone has experienced a similar problem. If I load up a workflow then unload it and perform a memory snapshot then the result is predictable - my workflow is no longer in memory. However, if I load up a workflow and set the PersistableIdle action to PersistableIdleAction.Unload and let the workflow idle the workflow remains in memory even though the Unload action fires. I used ANTS Memory Profiler to debug this issue. This is the object retention graph outputted showing that an internal object is hanging onto my workflow instance. Can anyone else verify this problem?   Hi Experts, I just got done with a new Web module built with Spring Framework. Till now I was testing all the pages on my local machine using Tomcat.   I've got a small winform application that I've written that is running fine in the IDE. It builds with no errors or warnings. It's not using any third party controls. I'm coding in C# in Visual Studio 2008. When I Build -- Publish the application, everything seems to work fine. However, when I go and attempt to install the application via the setup.exe file I get an error message that says, "Application cannot be started."   I have an ASP TextBox with TextMode set to MultiLine. I'm having problems with preserving the vbCrLf characters when a user tries to put line breaks into the text. When a button on the page is pressed, I'm taking the text from the control, trimming it using String.Trim, and assigning that value to a String property on an object (which, in turn assigns it to a private internal String variable on the object). The object then takes the value from the private internal variable and throws it into the database using a stored procedure call (the SP parameter it is put into is an nvarchar(4000)). • Problem compiling gnustep-gui-0.16.0 undefined reference to png_sizeof

  I'm trying to compile GNUstep on a linux box but gnustep-gui-0.16.0 package is failing. I downloaded GNUstep Startup stable 0.20.1 (http://wwwmain.gnustep.org/resources/downloads.php)and follow instructions about how to compile (./configure && make). I'm getting this error: libgnustep-gui.so: undefined reference to 'png_sizeof' I have compiled latest libpng (1.2.34) and I can see that png_sizeof is defined as macro. However, I'm not quite sure how to fix the gnustep-gui-0.16.0 build. I tried to pass the include/lib directory where libpng is installed to configure build but nothing seems to help. I have quite up to date linux box but using gcc 3.3 (upgrade is not an option - but this should not be a problem). Full error: Making all for tool set_show_service... Compiling file set_show_service.m ... • Collision Attacks, Message Digests and a Possible solution

  I've been doing some preliminary research in the area of message digests. Specifically collision attacks of cryptographic hash functions such as MD5 and SHA-1, such as the Postscript example and X.509 certificate duplicate. From what I can tell in the case of the postscript attack, specific data was generated and embedded within the header of the postscript (which is ignored during rendering) which brought about the internal state of the md5 to a state such that the modified wording of the document would lead to a final MD equivalent to the original. The X.509 took a similar approach where by data was injected within the comment/whitespace of the certificate. Ok so here is my question, and I can't seem to find anyone asking this question: Why isn't the length of ONLY the data being consumed added as a final block to the MD calculation? In the case of X.509 - Why is the whitespace and comments being taken into account as part of the MD? Wouldn't a simple processes such as one of the following be enough to resolve the proposed collision attacks: MD(M + |M|) = xyz MD(M + |M| + |M| * magicseed_0 +...+ |M| * magicseed_n) = xyz where : M : is the message |M| : size of the message MD : is the message digest function (eg: md5, sha, whirlpool etc) xyz : is the acutal message digest value for the message M magicseed_{i}: Is a set random values generated with seed based on the internal-state prior to the size being added. This technqiue should work, as to date all such collision attacks rely on adding more data to the original message. In short, the level of difficulty involved in generating a collision message such that: It not only generates the same MD But is also comprehensible/parsible/compliant and is also the same size as the original message, is immensely difficult if not near impossible. Has this approach ever been discussed? Any links to papers etc would be nice.

• MediaWiki installed on virtual server accessed through Apache ProxyPass

Let's name this Linux box "wiki box". Public users can't access this wiki as it is hosted on a private LAN. For external users (the Internet users) we have a Linux router (with Apache 2.0.52) where we host our website (ex: xttp://www.cubique.ro). Let's name this Linux box "router". WHAT I WANT What I want to do is: to create a virtual domain (as xttp://wiki.cubique.ro) on the "router" setup the virtual domain to forward all xttp requests to my private "wiki box" (ex: xttp://192.168.0.200/wiki_root/) WHAT I'VE DONE ALREADY On router's Apache (httpd.conf) I have created a VirtualHost as: < VirtualHost 0.0.0.0:80 ServerName wiki.cubique.ro DocumentRoot /someinternalpath/html ScriptAlias /cgi-bin /someinternalpath/cgi-bin ... Well, after I have navigate at wiki.cubique.ro I saw a blank web page, as /someinternalpath/html has an empty index.htm page. No problem, I know that I have to "teach" the router to pass all the access of virtual domain (wiki.cubique.ro) to the wiki box, where the real pages are stored. So I teach the Apache to ProxyPass the access of virtual domain root to the wiki box root like this: ...the following lines lies in the same virtual domain definition, see above ProxyPass / xttp://192.168.0.200/wiki/ ProxyPassReverse / xttp://192.168.0.200/wiki/ < /VirtualHost WHAT IS THE ISSUE If I access the wiki using the internal address (such as xttp://192.168.0.200/wiki/) it looks splendid (style sheets, everything). When I access the wiki using the virtual domain name ( xttp://wiki.cubique.ro ) it shows the content but no style sheet. Worse than that, no internal wiki links are working at all. • Creating a shim Stream

  A decompression API that I am using has the following API: Decode(Stream inStream,Stream outStream) I'd like to create a wrapper around this API, such that I can create my own Stream class which offers up the decoded data. Stream decodedStream=new BlaDecodeStream(inStream); So that I can than use this stream as a parameter to the XmlReader constructor in the same way one might use the System.IO.Compression.GZipStream. As far as I can tell, the only other option is set outStream stream to a MemoryStream or to a FileStream and go in two hops. The files I am dealing with are enormous, so neither of these options are particularly attractive. Before I go reinventing the wheel, is there any prior art that I might be able to draw from, or something in the BCL I might have missed? The CircularStream implementation here would go some of the way to helping, but I'm really looking for something similar that would block (as opposed to over/underrun) when the Stream's internal buffer is 'empty' when reading from it and block when the internal buffer is full when writing to it. In this way it could serve as parameter outStream and simultaneously (i.e. from another thread) could be read from by the XmlReader.
