• Android ProgressDialog Progress Bar doing things in the right order

    - by FauxReal
    I just about got this, but I have a small problem in the order of things going off. Specifically, in my thread() I am setting up an array that is used by a Spinner. Problem is the Spinner is all set and done basically before my thread() is finished, so it sets itself up with a null array. How do I associate the spinners ArrayAdapter with an array that is being loaded by another thread? I've cut the code down to what I think is necessary to understand the problem, but just let me know if more is needed. The problem occurs whether or not refreshData() is called. Along the same lines, sometimes I want to call loadData() from the menu. Directly following loadData() if I try to fire a toast on the next line this causes a forceclose, which is also because of how I'm implementing ProgressDialog. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING public class CMSHome extends Activity { private static List<String> pmList = new ArrayList<String>(); // Instantiate helpers PMListHelper plh = new PMListHelper(); ProjectObjectHelper poc = new ProjectObjectHelper(); // These objects hold lists and methods for dealing with them private Employees employees; private Projects projects; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // Loads data from filesystem, or webservice if necessary loadData(); // Capture spinner and associate pmList with it through ArrayAdapter spinner = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner); ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>( this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, pmList); adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); spinner.setAdapter(adapter); //---the button is wired to an event handler--- Button btn1 = (Button)findViewById(R.id.btnGetProjects); btn1.setOnClickListener(btnListAllProjectsListener); spinner.setOnItemSelectedListener(new MyOnItemSelectedListener()); } private void loadData() { final ProgressDialog pd = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Loading Data...", true, false); new Thread(new Runnable(){ public void run(){ employees = plh.deserializeEmployeeData(); projects = poc.deserializeProjectData(); // Check to see if data actually loaded, if not then refresh if ((employees == null) || (projects == null)) { refreshData(); } // Load up pmList for spinner control pmList = employees.getPMList(); pd.dismiss(); } }).start(); } private void refreshData() { // Refresh data for Projects projects = poc.refreshData(); poc.saveProjectData(mCtx, projects); // Refresh data for PMList employees = plh.refreshData(); plh.savePMData(mCtx, employees); } } <---- EDIT ----- I tried changing loadData() to the following after Jims suggestion. Not sure if I did this right, still doesn't work: private void loadData() { final ProgressDialog pd = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Loading Data...", true, false); new Thread(new Runnable(){ public void run(){ employees = plh.deserializeEmployeeData(); projects = poc.deserializeProjectData(); // Check to see if data actually loaded, if not return false if ((employees == null) || (projects == null)) { refreshData(); } pd.dismiss(); runOnUiThread(new Runnable() { public void run(){ // Load up pmList for spinner control pmList = employees.getPMList(); } }); } }).start(); }

  • Button click does not start Service in Android App Widget

    - by Feanor
    I'm having trouble starting a Service to update an AppWidget that I'm creating as an exercise. I'm trying to get the latitude and longitude of spoofed location data from DDMS to display in the widget. The widget uses a service to update the TextView, which may be slightly overkill, but I wanted to follow the template that seems to be common in AppWidgets that do more work (like the Forecast widget or the Wiktionary widget). Right now, I'm not getting any error messages or strange behavior; nothing at all happens when the button is pressed. I'm a bit mystified as to what might be wrong. Could anyone out there point me in the right direction? Additionally, if my logic for location is faulty, I'd love recommendations on that too. I've looked at several blogs, the Google examples, and the documentation, but I feel a little fuzzy on how it works. Here is the current state of the widget: public class Widget extends AppWidgetProvider { static final String TAG = "Widget"; /** * {@inheritDoc} */ public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds) { // Create an intent to launch the service Intent serviceIntent = new Intent(context, UpdateService.class); // PendingIntent is required for the onClickPendingIntent that actually // starts the service from a button click PendingIntent pendingServiceIntent = PendingIntent.getService(context, 0, serviceIntent, 0); // Get the layout for the App Widget and attach a click listener to the // button RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.main); views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.address_button, pendingServiceIntent); super.onUpdate(context, appWidgetManager, appWidgetIds); } // To prevent any ANR timeouts, we perform the update in a service; // really should have its own thread too public static class UpdateService extends Service { static final String TAG = "UpdateService"; private LocationManager locationManager; private Location currentLocation; private double latitude; private double longitude; public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) { // Get a LocationManager from the system services locationManager = (LocationManager) getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); // Register for updates from spoofed GPS locationManager.requestLocationUpdates("gps", 30000L, 0.0f, new LocationListener() { @Override public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { currentLocation = location; } @Override public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {} @Override public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {} @Override public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {} }); // Get the last known location from GPS currentLocation = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation("gps"); // Build the widget update RemoteViews updateViews = buildUpdate(this); // Push update for this widget to the home screen ComponentName thisWidget = new ComponentName(this, Widget.class); // AppWidgetManager updates AppWidget state; gets information about // installed AppWidget providers and other AppWidget related state AppWidgetManager manager = AppWidgetManager.getInstance(this); // Updates the views based on the RemoteView returned from the // buildUpdate method (stored in updateViews) manager.updateAppWidget(thisWidget, updateViews); } public RemoteViews buildUpdate(Context context) { latitude = currentLocation.getLatitude(); longitude = currentLocation.getLongitude(); RemoteViews updateViews = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.main); updateViews.setTextViewText(R.id.latitude_text, "" + latitude); updateViews.setTextViewText(R.id.longitude_text, "" + longitude); return updateViews; } @Override public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) { // We don't need to bind to this service return null; } } }

  • Storyboard apply to all labels

    - by ThitoO
    Hi everyone ! I whant to apply a little storyboard to a collection of labels in my window. My storyboard is like that : <Storyboard x:Key="Storyboard1" AutoReverse="True" RepeatBehavior="Forever"> <ColorAnimationUsingKeyFrames BeginTime="00:00:00" Storyboard.TargetName="label" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Label.Foreground).(SolidColorBrush.Color)"> <SplineColorKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00.1000000" Value="#FFFFFF"/> </ColorAnimationUsingKeyFrames> </Storyboard> I have a window composed of that : <Grid Background="#FF000000"> <Viewbox HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Stretch="Uniform"> <UniformGrid x:Name="grid" Background="#FF000000" /> </Viewbox> </Grid> When I want to start my storyboard I do that : Storyboard.SetTarget( _stb, myLabel ); _stb.Begin(); where _std is my storyboard loaded by the window's resources. The animation works fine, but on all labels (not only the one I want). I tried to switch SetTarget by SetTargetName but labels are created into my window by the constructor and names can not be founded when I try "SetTargetName". Do you have any ideas ? Thanks :) ------------ Edit : We asked me to be more descriptive -------------------------------------------------------------------- Label are not created directly in the xaml, they are created by the constructor of the window : public SpellerWindow(IKeyboard keyboard, int colomnNumber, SolidColorBrush background, SolidColorBrush foreground ) { InitializeComponent(); grid.Columns = colomnNumber; int i = 0; foreach( IKey key in keyboard.Zones.Default.Keys ) { Label lb = new Label(); lb.Foreground = foreground; lb.Name = "label"+(i++).ToString(); lb.Content = key.ActualKeys[keyboard.CurrentMode].UpLabel; lb.HorizontalAlignment = HorizontalAlignment.Center; lb.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Center; Viewbox box = new Viewbox(); box.Stretch = Stretch.Fill; box.Child = lb; box.Tag = key; grid.Children.Add( box ); } } Animations are started by an event handler : void Highlighter_StartAnimation( object sender, HiEventArgs e ) { Storyboard stb; if( !_anims.TryGetValue( e.Step.Animation.Name, out stb ) ) { stb = (Storyboard)_window.FindResource( e.Step.Animation.Name ); _anims.Add( e.Step.Animation.Name, stb ); } DoAnimations( _zones[e.Step.Zone], stb ); } Finally, animations are started by DoAnimations : void DoAnimations( List labels, Storyboard stb ) { foreach( Label lb in labels ) { Storyboard.SetTarget( stb, lb ); stb.Begin(); } } I want to highlight a collection of labels, but all labels are flashing. I don't know why, but I try to create a label into the Xaml directly, and set a Storyboard.TargetName (bound to the name of the label) in the Xaml of the storyboard. And it's working ... Now you know everything. Thanks for you help :)

  • Problems with Android Fragment back stack

    - by DexterMoon
    I've got a massive problem with the way the android fragment backstack seems to work and would be most grateful for any help that is offered. Imagine you have 3 Fragments [1] [2] [3] I want the user to be able to navigate [1] > [2] > [3] but on the way back (pressing back button) [3] > [1]. As I would have imagined this would be accomplished by not calling addToBackStack(..) when creating the transaction that brings fragment [2] into the fragment holder defined in XML. The reality of this seems as though that if I dont want [2] to appear again when user presses back button on [3], I must not call addToBackStack in the transaction that shows fragment [3]. This seems completely counter-intuitive (perhaps coming from the iOS world). Anyway if i do it this way, when I go from [1] > [2] and press back I arrive back at [1] as expected. If I go [1] > [2] > [3] and then press back I jump back to [1] (as expected). Now the strange behavior happens when I try and jump to [2] again from [1]. First of all [3] is briefly displayed before [2] comes into view. If I press back at this point [3] is displayed, and if I press back once again the app exits. Can anyone help me to understand whats going on here? And here is the layout xml file for my main activity: <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" > <fragment android:id="@+id/headerFragment" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" class="com.fragment_test.FragmentControls" > </fragment> <FrameLayout android:id="@+id/detailFragment" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" /> Update This is the code I'm using to build by nav heirarchy Fragment frag; FragmentTransaction transaction; //Create The first fragment [1], add it to the view, BUT Dont add the transaction to the backstack frag = new Fragment1(); transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); transaction.replace(R.id.detailFragment, frag); transaction.commit(); //Create the second [2] fragment, add it to the view and add the transaction that replaces the first fragment to the backstack frag = new Fragment2(); transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); transaction.replace(R.id.detailFragment, frag); transaction.addToBackStack(null); transaction.commit(); //Create third fragment frag = new Fragment3(); transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); transaction.replace(R.id.detailFragment, frag); transaction.commit(); //END OF SETUP CODE------------------------- //NOW: //Press back once and then issue the following code: frag = new Fragment2(); transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); transaction.replace(R.id.detailFragment, frag); transaction.addToBackStack(null); transaction.commit(); //Now press back again and you end up at fragment [3] not [1] Many thanks

  • ListView items not responding to tap

    - by Justin Williams
    I'm just getting my feet wet with Android and have built a UI that contains a TabHost with three tabs. Each tab is powered by its own Activity. The first Tab contains a listview with a prepopulated set of rows and is built from a custom ArrayAdapter. The problem I'm running into is that none of the ListView rows are tappable. In other words, when I tap on them there is no orange selection. If I use the scroll ball on my Nexus One it will select, but any touch gestures don't seem to be responding. All the UI is being handled using XML files with a main.xml housing the TabHost - LinearLayout - TabWidget/FrameLayout and a nearby_activity.xml file containing my ListView UI  <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/android:empty" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/nearby_no_events" /> <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:choiceMode="multipleChoice" android:divider="#d9d9d9" android:dividerHeight="1px" android:cacheColorHint="#eee" /> </LinearLayout> And the relevant code from my Activity that is set to show in the selected tab. public class NearbyActivity extends ListActivity { private ArrayList<Event> m_events = null; private EventAdapter m_adapter = null; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.nearby_activity); getEvents(); this.m_adapter = new EventAdapter(this, R.layout.eventrow, m_events); setListAdapter(this.m_adapter); } private void getEvents() { m_events = new ArrayList<Event>(); for (int i = 0; i < 100 ; i++) { Event e = new Event(); e.setEventName("Event " + i); e.setVenueName("Staples Center"); e.setStartDate(new Date()); m_events.add(e); } } private class EventAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Event> { private ArrayList<Event> items; public EventAdapter(Context context, int textViewResourceId, ArrayList<Event> items) { super(context, textViewResourceId, items); this.items = items; } @Override public View getView (int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; if (v == null) { LayoutInflater vi = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); v = vi.inflate(R.layout.eventrow, null); } Event e = items.get(position); if (e != null) { TextView nameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.eventName); TextView venueNameText = (TextView)v.findViewById(R.id.venueName); if (nameText != null) { nameText.setText(e.getEventName()); } if(venueNameText != null) { venueNameText.setText(e.getVenueName()); } } return v; } } } My listview row's are populated by an XML file as well.  <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:orientation="vertical" android:padding="4dip"> <TextView android:id="@+id/eventName" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:inputType="text" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:textSize="18sp" android:textColor="#000" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/venueName" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/eventName" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_marginRight="55dip" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="end" android:scrollHorizontally="true" android:textSize="13sp" android:textColor="#313131" android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true" android:gravity="center_vertical" /> </RelativeLayout> Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Java Fx Data bind not working with File Read

    - by rjha94
    Hi I am using a very simple JavaFx client to upload files. I read the file in chunks of 1 MB (using Byte Buffer) and upload using multi part POST to a PHP script. I want to update the progress bar of my client to show progress after each chunk is uploaded. The calculations for upload progress look correct but the progress bar is not updated. I am using bind keyword. I am no JavaFx expert and I am hoping some one can point out my mistake. I am writing this client to fix the issues posted here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2447837/upload-1gb-files-using-chunking-in-php) /* * Main.fx * * Created on Mar 16, 2010, 1:58:32 PM */ package webgloo; import javafx.stage.Stage; import javafx.scene.Scene; import javafx.scene.layout.VBox; import javafx.geometry.VPos; import javafx.scene.control.Button; import javafx.scene.control.Label; import javafx.scene.layout.HBox; import javafx.scene.layout.LayoutInfo; import javafx.scene.text.Font; import javafx.scene.control.ProgressBar; import java.io.FileInputStream; /** * @author rajeev jha */ var totalBytes:Float = 1; var bytesWritten:Float = 0; var progressUpload:Float; var uploadURI = "http://www.test1.com/test/receiver.php"; var postMax = 1024000 ; function uploadFile(inputFile: java.io.File) { totalBytes = inputFile.length(); bytesWritten = 1; println("To-Upload - {totalBytes}"); var is = new FileInputStream(inputFile); var fc = is.getChannel(); //1 MB byte buffer var chunkCount = 0; var bb = java.nio.ByteBuffer.allocate(postMax); while(fc.read(bb) >= 0){ println("loop:start"); bb.flip(); var limit = bb.limit(); var bytes = GigaFileUploader.getBufferBytes(bb.array(), limit); var content = GigaFileUploader.createPostContent(inputFile.getName(), bytes); GigaFileUploader.upload(uploadURI, content); bytesWritten = bytesWritten + limit ; progressUpload = 1.0 * bytesWritten / totalBytes ; println("Progress is - {progressUpload}"); chunkCount++; bb.clear(); println("loop:end"); } } var label = Label { font: Font { size: 12 } text: bind "Uploaded - {bytesWritten * 100 / (totalBytes)}%" layoutInfo: LayoutInfo { vpos: VPos.CENTER maxWidth: 120 minWidth: 120 width: 120 height: 30 } } def jFileChooser = new javax.swing.JFileChooser(); jFileChooser.setApproveButtonText("Upload"); var button = Button { text: "Upload" layoutInfo: LayoutInfo { width: 100 height: 30 } action: function () { var outputFile = jFileChooser.showOpenDialog(null); if (outputFile == javax.swing.JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) { uploadFile(jFileChooser.getSelectedFile()); } } } var hBox = HBox { spacing: 10 content: [label, button] } var progressBar = ProgressBar { progress: bind progressUpload layoutInfo: LayoutInfo { width: 240 height: 30 } } var vBox = VBox { spacing: 10 content: [hBox, progressBar] layoutX: 10 layoutY: 10 } Stage { title: "Upload File" width: 270 height: 120 scene: Scene { content: [vBox] } resizable: false }

  • How do I get a Java to call data from the Internet? Where to even start??

    - by cdg
    Hello oh great wizards of all things android. I really need your help. Mostly because my little brain just doesn't know were to start. I am trying to pull data from the internet to make a widget for the home screen. I have the layout built: <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/Layout" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@drawable/widget_bg_normal" android:clipChildren="false" > <TextView android:id="@+id/text_view" android:layout_width="100px" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:paddingTop="18px" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:textSize="8px" android:text="158x154 Image downloaded from the internet goes here. Needs to be updated every evening at midnight or unless the button below is pressed. Now if I could only figure out exactly how to do this, life would be good." /> </RelativeLayout> Got the provider xml bulit: <appwidget-provider xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:minWidth="150dip" android:minHeight="150dip" android:updatePeriodMillis="10000" android:initialLayout="@layout/widget" /> The Manifest works great. <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.dge.myandroid" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0"> <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> <activity android:name=".myactivty" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
</intent-filter> </activity>  <receiver android:name=".mywidget" android:label="@string/app_name" > <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.appwidget.action.APPWIDGET_UPDATE" /> </intent-filter> <meta-data android:name="android.appwidget.widgetprovider" android:resource="@xml/widgetprovider" /> </receiver>  </application> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="7" /> </manifest> The data it is calling looks something like this when it is called. It basically goes to a website that uses php to random the image:

center>

But here is were I am stuck. I just don't know where to start at all. The java is so far beyond my little head that I don't know what to do. package com.dge.myandroid; import android.appwidget.AppWidgetProvider; public class mywidget extends AppWidgetProvider { } The wiki example just confused me more. I just don't know where to begin. Please help.

Below is what I have at this point but it doesn't seem to due anything. public class Routes extends ListActivity { String[] ROUTES; TextView selection; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); ROUTES = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.routes); setContentView(R.layout.routes); setListAdapter(new IconicAdapter()); selection=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.selection); } public void onListItemClick(ListView parent, View v, int position, long id) { selection.setText(ROUTES[position]); } class IconicAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<String> { IconicAdapter() { super(Routes.this, R.layout.row, R.id.label, ROUTES); } } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); View row = inflater.inflate(R.layout.row, parent, false); TextView label = (TextView) row.findViewById(R.id.label); label.setText(ROUTES[position]); View icon = (View) row.findViewById(R.id.icon); switch(position){ case 0: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 1: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 2: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 3: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Green); break; case 4: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; case 5: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Blue); break; case 6: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Gray); break; case 7: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Yellow); break; case 8: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 9: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 10: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Brown); break; case 11: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Purple); break; case 12: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Red); break; case 13: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Gold); break; case 14: icon.setBackgroundColor(R.color.Orange); break; } return(row); } } Any input is appreciated and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! • Flex 4: Traversing the Stage More Easily

    - by Steve
    The following is a MXML Module I am producing in Flex 4:  <mx:Module xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" creationComplete="init()" layout="absolute" width="100%" height="100%"> <fx:Declarations>  </fx:Declarations> <fx:Style source="BMChartModule.css" /> <s:Panel id="panel" title="Benchmark Results" height="100%" width="100%" dropShadowVisible="false"> <mx:TabNavigator id="tn" height="100%" width="100%" /> </s:Panel> <fx:Script>  import flash.events.Event; import mx.charts.ColumnChart; import mx.charts.effects.SeriesInterpolate; import mx.controls.Alert; import spark.components.BorderContainer; import spark.components.Button; import spark.components.Label; import spark.components.NavigatorContent; import spark.components.RadioButton; import spark.components.TextInput; import spark.layouts.*; private var xml:XML; private function init():void { var seriesInterpolate:SeriesInterpolate = new SeriesInterpolate(); seriesInterpolate.duration = 1000; xml = parentApplication.model.xml; var sectorList:XMLList = xml.SECTOR; for each(var i:XML in sectorList) { var ncLayout:HorizontalLayout = new HorizontalLayout(); var nc:NavigatorContent = new NavigatorContent(); nc.label = i.@NAME; nc.name = "NC_" + nc.label; nc.layout = ncLayout; tn.addElement(nc); var cC:ColumnChart = new ColumnChart(); cC.percentWidth = 70; cC.name = "CC"; nc.addElement(cC); var bClayout:VerticalLayout = new VerticalLayout(); var bC:BorderContainer = new BorderContainer(); bC.percentWidth = 30; bC.layout = bClayout; nc.addElement(bC); var bClabel:Label = new Label(); bClabel.percentWidth = 100; bClabel.text = "Select a graph to view it in the column chart:"; var dpList:XMLList = sectorList.(@NAME == i.@NAME).DATAPOINT; for each(var j:XML in dpList) { var rB:RadioButton = new RadioButton(); rB.groupName = "dp"; rB.label = j.@NAME; rB.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, rBclick); bC.addElement(rB); } } } private function rBclick(e:MouseEvent):void { var selectedTab:NavigatorContent = this.tn.selectedChild as NavigatorContent; var colChart:ColumnChart = selectedTab.getChildByName("CC") as ColumnChart; trace(selectedTab.getChildAt(0)); }  </fx:Script> </mx:Module> I'm writing this function rBclick to redraw the column chart when a radio button is clicked. In order to do this I need to find the column chart on the stage using actionscript. I've currently got 3 lines of code in here to do this: var selectedTab:NavigatorContent = this.tn.selectedChild as NavigatorContent; var colChart:ColumnChart = selectedTab.getChildByName("CC") as ColumnChart; trace(selectedTab.getChildAt(0)); Getting to the active tab in the tabnavigator is easy enough, but then selectedTab.getChildAt(0) - which I was expecting to be the chart - is a "spark.skin.spark.SkinnableContainerSkin"...anyway, I can continue to traverse the tree using this somewhat annoying code, but I'm hoping there is an easier way. So in short, at run time I want to, with as little code as possible, identify the column chart in the active tab so I can redraw it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to find problem with PHP XSLTProcessor when return from transformToXML is false and libxml_get_

    - by John
    I'm working on the code below to allow HTTP user agents that cannot perform XSL transformations to view the resources on my server. I'm mystified because the result of transformToXML is false, but the result of libxml_get_errors() is an empty array. As you can see, the code outputs the LibXSLT version ID and I'm getting the problem on WinVista with version 1.1.24. Is libxml_get_errors() not the right function to get the errors from the XSLTProcessor object? If you're interested in the XML documents, you can get them from http://bobberinteractive.com/index.xhtml and .../stylesheets/layout.xsl <?php //redirect browsers that can handle the source files. if (strpos ( $_SERVER ['HTTP_ACCEPT'], 'application/xhtml+xml' )) { header ( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" ); header ( "Location: http://" . $_SERVER ['SERVER_NAME'] . • Passing ArrayList<String> between tabs

    - by Christophe
    Hi all, I'm not very clear about the Intent object and how to use it to pass data between Activities. In my application I have several tabs between which I want to pass ArrayList. Here is a sample code I plan to use, but I'm missing the part where the main activity catches the Intent and passes it to the new activity on start : 1. myTabs.java == This is where I think I need to add some code to pass the data between TabOne and TabTwo. For now it is just using the sample code of the TabActivity sample. public class myTabs extends TabActivity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); Resources res = getResources(); // Resource object to get Drawables TabHost tabHost = getTabHost(); // The activity TabHost TabHost.TabSpec spec; // Reusable TabSpec for each tab Intent intent; // Reusable Intent for each tab // Create an Intent to launch an Activity for the tab (to be reused) intent = new Intent().setClass(this, TabPeopleActivity.class); // Initialize a TabSpec for each tab and add it to the TabHost spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("TabOne").setIndicator("TabOne", res.getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_tab_one)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); // Do the same for the other tabs intent = new Intent().setClass(this, TabTransactionActivity.class); spec = tabHost.newTabSpec("TabTwo").setIndicator("TabTwo", res.getDrawable(R.drawable.ic_tab_two)) .setContent(intent); tabHost.addTab(spec); tabHost.setCurrentTab(0); } } 2. TabOne.java == I added a piece of code in the onStop procedure to fill in the Intent data with the array I want to pass to TabTwo. Not sure it is the right way to do though. public class TabOne extends Activity { [...] private ArrayList<String> arrayPeople; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.tabone); arrayPeople = new ArrayList<String>(); [... here we modify arrayPeople ...] } /** Called when the activity looses focus **/ @Override public void onStop(){ Intent myIntent = new Intent(); myIntent.putStringArrayListExtra("arrayPeople", arrayPeople); this.setIntent(myIntent); } } 3. TabTwo.java == Here I am trying to fetch the ArrayList from the Intent that is supposed to be passed when the Activity starts. But how to do this? public class TabTwo extends Activity { private ArrayList<String> arrayPeople; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.transaction); Intent myIntent = new Intent(); myIntent = this.getIntent(); arrayPeople = myIntent.getStringArrayListExtra("arrayPeople"); } } Thanks for your ideas !

  • NullPointerException using EndlessAdapter with SimpleAdapter

    - by android_dev
    Hello, I am using EndlessAdapter from commonsguy with a SimpleAdapter. I can load data when I make a scroll down without problems, but I have a NullPointerException when I make a scroll up. The problem is in the method @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView,ViewGroup parent) { return wrapped.getView(position, convertView, parent); } from the class AdapterWrapper. The call to wrapped.getView(position, convertView,parent) raises the exception and I don´t know why. This is my implementation of EndlessAdapter: //Inner class in SearchTextActivity class DemoAdapter extends EndlessAdapter { private RotateAnimation rotate = null; DemoAdapter(ArrayList<HashMap<String, String>> result) { super(new SimpleAdapter(SearchTracksActivity.this, result, R.layout.textlist_item, PROJECTION_COLUMNS, VIEW_MAPPINGS)); rotate = new RotateAnimation( 0f, 360f, Animation.RELATIVE_TO_SELF, 0.5f, Animation.RELATIVE_TO_SELF, 0.5f); rotate.setDuration(600); rotate.setRepeatMode(Animation.RESTART); rotate.setRepeatCount(Animation.INFINITE); } @Override protected View getPendingView(ViewGroup parent) { View row=getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.textlist_item, null); View child=row.findViewById(R.id.title); child.setVisibility(View.GONE); child=row.findViewById(R.id.username); child.setVisibility(View.GONE); child=row.findViewById(R.id.throbber); child.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); child.startAnimation(rotate); return row; } @Override @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") protected void rebindPendingView(int position, View row) { HashMap<String, String> res = (HashMap<String, String>)getWrappedAdapter().getItem(position); View child=row.findViewById(R.id.title); ((TextView)child).setText(res.get("title")); child.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); child=row.findViewById(R.id.username); ((TextView)child).setText(res.get("username")); child.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); ImageView throbber=(ImageView)row.findViewById(R.id.throbber); throbber.setVisibility(View.GONE); throbber.clearAnimation(); } boolean mFinal = true; @Override protected boolean cacheInBackground() { EditText searchText = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.searchText); String textToSearch = searchText.getText().toString(); Util.getSc().searchText(textToSearch , offset, limit, new ResultListener<ArrayList<Text>>() { @Override public void onError(Exception e) { e.toString(); mFinal = false; } @Override public void onSuccess(ArrayList<Text> result) { if(result.size() == 0){ mFinal = false; }else{ texts.addAll(result); offset++; } } }); return mFinal; } @Override protected void appendCachedData() { for(Text text : texts){ result.add(text.getMapValues()); } texts.clear(); } } And I use it this way: public class SearchTextActivity extends AbstractListActivity { private static final String[] PROJECTION_COLUMNS = new String[] { TextStore.Text.TITLE, TextStore.Text.USER_NAME}; private static final int[] VIEW_MAPPINGS = new int[] { R.id.Text_title, R.id.Text_username}; ArrayList<HashMap<String, String>> result; static ArrayList<Text> texts; static int offset = 0; static int limit = 1; @Override void onAbstractCreate(Bundle savedInstance) { setContentView(R.layout.search_tracks); setupViews(); } private void setupViews() { ImageButton searchButton = (ImageButton)findViewById(R.id.searchButton); updateView(); } SimpleAdapter adapter; void updateView(){ if(result == null) { result = new ArrayList<HashMap<String, String>>(); } if(tracks == null) { texts = new ArrayList<Text>(); } } public void sendQuery(View v){ offset = 0; texts.clear(); result.clear(); setListAdapter(new DemoAdapter(result)); } } Does anybody knows what could be the problem? Thank you in advance

  • get user selection and convert it to a String [Android]

    - by Kira
    Hello, I just got a Droid, and after having used it for a while, I felt like I wanted to make a program for it. The program that I am trying to make calculates the actual storage capacity of secondary storage mediums. The user select from a list of units that ranges from KB to YB and the size the entered gets put into a formula depending on the chosen unit. However, there is a bit of a problem with the program. From my testing, I have narrowed it down to the fact that the user's selection is not really being obtained from the spinner. Everything I look up seems to point me to a method quite similar to how it works in J2SE, but it does nothing. How am I actually supposed to get that data? Here is the Java source code for the app: package com.Actual.android; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.*; import android.view.*; public class ActualStorageActivity extends Activity { Spinner selection; /* declare variable, in order to control spinner (ComboBox) */ ArrayAdapter adapter; /* declare an array adapter object, in order for spinner to work */ EditText size; /* declare variable to control textfield */ EditText result; /* declare variable to control textfield */ Button calculate; /* declare variable to control button */ Storage capacity = new Storage(); /* import custom class for formulas */ /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // load content from XML selection = (Spinner)findViewById(R.id.spinner); adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this, R.array.choices_array, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); size = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.size); result = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.result); calculate = (Button)findViewById(R.id.submit); adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); /* set resource for dropdown */ selection.setAdapter(adapter); // attach adapter to spinner result.setEnabled(false); // make read-only result.setText("usable storage"); } public void calcAction(View view) { String initial = size.getText().toString(); String unit = selection.getSelectedItem().toString(); String end = "Nothing"; double convert = Double.parseDouble(initial); capacity.setStorage(convert); if (unit == "KB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getKB()); } else if (unit == "MB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getMB()); } else if (unit == "GB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getGB()); } else if (unit == "TB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getTB()); } else if (unit == "PB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getPB()); } else if (unit == "EB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getEB()); } else if (unit == "ZB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getZB()); } else if (unit == "YB") { end = Double.toString(capacity.getYB()); } else; result.setText(end); } }

  • Log4j: Events appear in the wrong logfile

    - by Markus
    Hi there! To be able to log and trace some events I've added a LoggingHandler class to my java project. Inside this class I'm using two different log4j logger instances - one for logging an event and one for tracing an event into different files. The initialization block of the class looks like this: public void initialize() { System.out.print("starting logging server ..."); // create logger instances logLogger = Logger.getLogger("log"); traceLogger = Logger.getLogger("trace"); // create pattern layout String conversionPattern = "%c{2} %d{ABSOLUTE} %r %p %m%n"; try { patternLayout = new PatternLayout(); patternLayout.setConversionPattern(conversionPattern); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("error: could not create logger layout pattern"); System.out.println(e); System.exit(1); } // add pattern to file appender try { logFileAppender = new FileAppender(patternLayout, logFilename, false); traceFileAppender = new FileAppender(patternLayout, traceFilename, false); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("error: could not add logger layout pattern to corresponding appender"); System.out.println(e); System.exit(1); } // add appenders to loggers logLogger.addAppender(logFileAppender); traceLogger.addAppender(traceFileAppender); // set logger level logLogger.setLevel(Level.INFO); traceLogger.setLevel(Level.INFO); // start logging server loggingServer = new LoggingServer(logLogger, traceLogger, serverPort, this); loggingServer.start(); System.out.println(" done"); } To make sure that only only thread is using the functionality of a logger instance at the same time each logging / tracing method calls the logging method .info() inside a synchronized-block. One example looks like this: public void logMessage(String message) { synchronized (logLogger) { if (logLogger.isInfoEnabled() && logFileAppender != null) { logLogger.info(instanceName + ": " + message); } } } If I look at the log files, I see that sometimes a event appears in the wrong file. One example: trace 10:41:30,773 11080 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1267093 to vehicle 1055293 (slaveControl 1) trace 10:41:30,784 11091 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1156513 to vehicle 1105792 (slaveControl 1) trace 10:41:30,796 11103 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1104306 to vehicle 1055293 (slaveControl 1) trace 10:41:30,808 11115 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): vehicle 1327879 was pushed to slave control 1 10:41:30,808 11115 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1101572 to vehicle 106741 (slaveControl 1) trace 10:41:30,820 11127 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1055293 to vehicle 1104306 (slaveControl 1) I think that the problem occures everytime two event happen at the same time (here: 10:41:30,808). Does anybody has an idea how to solve my problem? I already tried to add a sleep() after the method call, but that doesn't helped ... BR, Markus Edit: logtrace 11:16:07,75511:16:07,755 1129711297 INFOINFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 1291400 to vehicle 1138272 (slaveControl 1)masterControl(192.168.2.21): vehicle 1333770 was added to slave control 1 or log 11:16:08,562 12104 INFO 11:16:08,562 masterControl(192.168.2.21): string broadcast message was pushed from 117772 to vehicle 1217744 (slaveControl 1) 12104 INFO masterControl(192.168.2.21): vehicle 1169775 was pushed to slave control 1 Edit 2: It seems like the problem only occurs if logging methods are called from inside a RMI thread (my client / server exchange information using RMI connections). ... Edit 3: I solved the problem by myself: It seems like log4j is NOT completely thread-save. After synchronizing all log / trace methods using a separate object everything is working fine. Maybe the lib is writing the messages to a thread-unsafe buffer before writing them to file?

  • Android onClickListener options and help on creating a non-static array adapter

    - by CoderInTraining
    I am trying to make an application that gets data dynamically and displays it in a listView. Here is my code that I have with static data. There are a couple of things I want to try and do and can't figure out how. MainActivity.java package text.example.project; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Arrays; import java.util.Collections; import android.app.ListActivity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.widget.AdapterView; import android.widget.AdapterView.OnItemClickListener; import android.widget.ArrayAdapter; import android.widget.ListView; import android.widget.TextView; import android.widget.Toast; public class MainActivity extends ListActivity { //declarations private boolean isItem; private ArrayAdapter<String> item1Adapter; private ArrayAdapter<String> item2Adapter; private ArrayAdapter<String> item3Adapter; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); Collections.sort(ITEM1); Collections.sort(ITEM2); Collections.sort(ITEM3); item1Adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, ITEM1); item2Adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, ITEM2); item3Adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, ITEM3); setListAdapter(item1Adapter); isItem = true; ListView lv = getListView(); lv.setTextFilterEnabled(true); lv.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { @Override public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) { // When clicked, show a toast with the TextView text if (isItem) { //ITEM1.add("another\n\t" + Calendar.getInstance().getTime()); Collections.sort(ITEM1); item2Adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); setListAdapter(item2Adapter); isItem = false; } else { item1Adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); setListAdapter(item1Adapter); isItem = true; } Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), ((TextView) view).getText(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } }); } // need to turn dynamic static ArrayList<String> ITEM1 = new ArrayList<String> (Arrays.asList( "ITEM1-1", "ITEM1-2" )); static ArrayList<String> ITEM2 = new ArrayList<String> (Arrays.asList( "ITEM2-1", "ITEM2-2" )); static ArrayList<String> ITEM3 = new ArrayList<String> (Arrays.asList("ITEM3-1", "ITEM3-2")); } list_item.xml  <TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp" > </TextView> What I want to do is first pull from a dynamic source. I need to do what is almost exactly like this tutorial... http://androiddevelopement.blogspot.in/2011/06/android-xml-parsing-tutorial-using.html ... however, I can't get the tutorial to work... I also would like to know how I can make the list item clicks so that if I click on "ITEM1-1" it goes to the menu "ITEM2-1" and "ITEM2-2". and if "ITEM1-2" is clicked, then it goes to the menu with "ITEM3-1" and "ITEM3-2"... I am totally a noob at this whole android development thing. So any suggestions would be great!

  • HTML/CSS - No 100% height on div in IE

    - by Jordan Rynard
    Okay, so I've got a problem - and I'd love to have it fixed. I am using my favourite way of setting up a simple header/content/footer layout. The problem is that any elements I add to the 'content' div of my layout can not be expanded to 100% in Internet Explorer (as far as I know, IE only). I understand there is no height declared to the 'content' element, but because of the style of its positioning (declaring an absolute top AND bottom), the element fills the desired area. (The content element has a background color defined so you can see that the div is in fact filling between both the header and the footer.) So my problem is, since the div is clearly expanded between the two, why can't a child be set to 100% to fill that area? If anyone has any solutions, I'd love to hear them. (I'm looking for a solution that won't involve designing by an entire different layout.. or at least perhaps an explanation of why this is happening. I'm assuming at this point it's because of the lack of a height declaration -- but the div is expanded, so I don't get it!) You can view a page of the example here: http://www.elizabethlouter.com/html/index.html And here is the code as used on the page:

No 100% height on 'content' child div in IE

  • First round playing with Memcached

    - by Shaun
    To be honest I have not been very interested in the caching before I’m going to a project which would be using the multi-site deployment and high connection and concurrency and very sensitive to the user experience. That means we must cache the output data for better performance. After looked for the Internet I finally focused on the Memcached. What’s the Memcached? I think the description on its main site gives us a very good and simple explanation. Free & open source, high-performance, distributed memory object caching system, generic in nature, but intended for use in speeding up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. Memcached is an in-memory key-value store for small chunks of arbitrary data (strings, objects) from results of database calls, API calls, or page rendering. Memcached is simple yet powerful. Its simple design promotes quick deployment, ease of development, and solves many problems facing large data caches. Its API is available for most popular languages. The original Memcached was built on *nix system are is being widely used in the PHP world. Although it’s not a problem to use the Memcached installed on *nix system there are some windows version available fortunately. Since we are WISC (Windows – IIS – SQL Server – C#, which on the opposite of LAMP) it would be much easier for us to use the Memcached on Windows rather than *nix. I’m using the Memcached Win X64 version provided by NorthScale. There are also the x86 version and other operation system version. Install Memcached Unpack the Memcached file to a folder on the machine you want it to be installed, we can see that there are only 3 files and the main file should be the “memcached.exe”. Memcached would be run on the server as a service. To install the service just open a command windows and navigate to the folder which contains the “memcached.exe”, let’s say “C:\Memcached\”, and then type “memcached.exe -d install”. If you are using Windows Vista and Windows 7 system please be execute the command through the administrator role. Right-click the command item in the start menu and use “Run as Administrator”, otherwise the Memcached would not be able to be installed successfully. Once installed successful we can type “memcached.exe -d start” to launch the service. Now it’s ready to be used. The default port of Memcached is 11211 but you can change it through the command argument. You can find the help by typing “memcached -h”. Using Memcached Memcahed has many good and ready-to-use providers for vary program language. After compared and reviewed I chose the Memcached Providers. It’s built based on another 3rd party Memcached client named enyim.com Memcached Client. The Memcached Providers is very simple to set/get the cached objects through the Memcached servers and easy to be configured through the application configuration file (aka web.config and app.config). Let’s create a console application for the demonstration and add the 3 DLL files from the package of the Memcached Providers to the project reference. Then we need to add the configuration for the Memcached server. Create an App.config file and firstly add the section on top of it. Here we need three sections: the section for Memcached Providers, for enyim.com Memcached client and the log4net. 1: <configSections> 2: <section name="cacheProvider" 3: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.CacheProviderSection, MemcachedProviders" 4: allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" 5: restartOnExternalChanges="true"/> 6: <sectionGroup name="enyim.com"> 7: <section name="memcached" 8: type="Enyim.Caching.Configuration.MemcachedClientSection, Enyim.Caching"/> 9: </sectionGroup> 10: <section name="log4net" 11: type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net"/> 12: </configSections> Then we will add the configuration for 3 of them in the App.config file. The Memcached server information would be defined under the enyim.com section since it will be responsible for connect to the Memcached server. Assuming I installed the Memcached on two servers with the default port, the configuration would be like this. 1: <enyim.com> 2: <memcached> 3: <servers> 4: 5: <add address="192.168.0.149" port="11211"/> 6: <add address="10.10.20.67" port="11211"/> 7: </servers> 8: <socketPool minPoolSize="10" maxPoolSize="100" connectionTimeout="00:00:10" deadTimeout="00:02:00"/> 9: </memcached> 10: </enyim.com> Memcached supports the multi-deployment which means you can install the Memcached on the servers as many as you need. The protocol of the Memcached responsible for routing the cached objects into the proper server. So it’s very easy to scale-out your system by Memcached. And then define the Memcached Providers configuration. The defaultExpireTime indicates how long the objected cached in the Memcached would be expired, the default value is 2000 ms. 1: <cacheProvider defaultProvider="MemcachedCacheProvider"> 2: <providers> 3: <add name="MemcachedCacheProvider" 4: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.MemcachedCacheProvider, MemcachedProviders" 5: keySuffix="_MySuffix_" 6: defaultExpireTime="2000"/> 7: </providers> 8: </cacheProvider> The last configuration would be the log4net. 1: <log4net> 2: 3: <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender"> 4: <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> 5: <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline"/> 6: </layout> 7: </appender> 8: 9: 10: <root> 11: <priority value="WARN"/> 12: <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"> 13: <filter type="log4net.Filter.LevelRangeFilter"> 14: <levelMin value="WARN"/> 15: <levelMax value="FATAL"/> 16: </filter> 17: </appender-ref> 18: </root> 19: </log4net> Get, Set and Remove the Cached Objects Once we finished the configuration it would be very simple to consume the Memcached servers. The Memcached Providers gives us a static class named DistCache that can be used to operate the Memcached servers. Get<T>: Retrieve the cached object from the Memcached servers. If failed it will return null or the default value. Add: Add an object with a unique key into the Memcached servers. Assuming that we have an operation that retrieve the email from the name which is time consuming. This is the operation that should be cached. The method would be like this. I utilized Thread.Sleep to simulate the long-time operation. 1: static string GetEmailByNameSlowly(string name) 2: { 3: Thread.Sleep(2000); 4: return name + "@ethos.com.cn"; 5: } Then in the real retrieving method we will firstly check whether the name, email information had been searched previously and cached. If yes we will just return them from the Memcached, otherwise we will invoke the slowly method to retrieve it and then cached. 1: static string GetEmailByName(string name) 2: { 3: var email = DistCache.Get<string>(name); 4: if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(email)) 5: { 6: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email not be in memcached so need slow loading. (name = {0})==>", name); 7: email = GetEmailByNameSlowly(name); 8: DistCache.Add(name, email); 9: } 10: else 11: { 12: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email had been in memcached. (name = {0})==>", name); 13: } 14: return email; 15: } Finally let’s finished the calling method and execute. 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: var name = string.Empty; 4: while (name != "q") 5: { 6: Console.Write("==> Please enter the name to find the email: "); 7: name = Console.ReadLine(); 8: 9: var email = GetEmailByName(name); 10: Console.WriteLine("==> The email of {0} is {1}.", name, email); 11: } 12: } The first time I entered “ziyanxu” it takes about 2 seconds to get the email since there’s nothing cached. But the next time I entered “ziyanxu” it returned very quickly from the Memcached. Summary In this post I explained a bit on why we need cache, what’s Memcached and how to use it through the C# application. The example is fairly simple but hopefully demonstrated on how to use it. Memcached is very easy and simple to be used since it gives you the full opportunity to consider what, when and how to cache the objects. And when using Memcached you don’t need to consider the cache servers. The Memcached would be like a huge object pool in front of you. The next step I’m thinking now are: What kind of data should be cached? And how to determined the key? How to implement the cache as a layer on top of the business layer so that the application will not notice that the cache is there. How to implement the cache by AOP so that the business logic no need to consider the cache. I will investigate on them in the future and will share my thoughts and results. Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. A few months ago during my first end of year review at Microsoft I was doing an assessment of my year. One of my personal goals to come out of this reflection was to improve my personal productivity. While I hear many people say “I wish I had more hours in the day so that I could get more done” I feel like that is the wrong approach. There is an inherent assumption that you are being productive with your time that you already have and thus more time would allow you to be as productive given more time. Instead of wishing I could add more hours to the day I’ve begun adopting a number of processes or behavior changes in my personal life to make better use of my time with the goal of improving productivity. The areas of focus are as follows: Focus Processes Tools Personal health Email Note: A number of these topics have spawned from reading Scott Hanselman’s blog posts on productivity, reading of David Allen’s book Getting Things Done, and discussions with friends and coworkers who had great insights into this topic. Focus Pre-reading / viewing: Overcome your work addiction Millennials paralyzed by choice Its Not What You Read Its What You Ignore (Scott Hanselman video) I highly recommend Scott Hanselman’s video above and this post before continuing with this article. It is well worth the 40+ mins price of admission for the video and couple minutes for article. One key takeaway for me was listing out my activities in an average week and realizing which ones held little or no value to me. We all have a finite amount of time to work each day. Do you know how much time and effort you spend on various aspects of your life (family, friends, religion, work, personal happiness, etc.)? Do your actions and commitments reflect your priorities? The biggest time consumers with little value for me were time spent on social media services (Twitter and Facebook), playing an MMO video game, and watching TV. I still check up on Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft internal chat forums, and other services to keep contact with others but I’ve reduced that time significantly. As for TV I’ve cut the cord and no longer subscribe to cable TV. Instead I use Netflix, RedBox, and over the air channels but again with reduced time consumption. With the time I’ve freed up I’m back to working out 2-3 times a week and reading 4 nights a week (both of which I had been neglecting previously). I’ll mention a few tools for helping measure your time in the Tools section. Processes Do not multi-task. I’ll say it again. Do not multi-task. There is no such thing as multi tasking. The human brain is optimized to work on one thing at a time. When you are “multi-tasking” you are really doing 2 or more things at less than 100%, usually by a wide margin. I take pride in my work and when I’m doing something less than 100% the results typically degrade rapidly. Now there are some ways of bending the rules of physics for this one. There is the notion of getting a double amount of work done in the same timeframe. Some examples would be listening to podcasts / watching a movie while working out, using a treadmill as your work desk, or reading while in the bathroom. Personally I’ve found good results in combining one task that does not require focus (making dinner, playing certain video games, working out) and one task that does (watching a movie, listening to podcasts). I believe this is related to me being a visual and kinesthetic (using my hands or actually doing it) learner. I’m terrible with auditory learning. My fiance and I joke that sometimes we talk and talk to each other but never really hear each other. Goals / Tasks Goals can give us direction in life and a sense of accomplishment when we complete them. Goals can also overwhelm us and give us a sense of failure when we don’t complete them. I propose that you shift your perspective and not dwell on all of the things that you haven’t gotten done, but focus instead on regularly setting measureable goals that are within reason of accomplishing. At the end of each time frame have a retrospective to review your progress. Do not feel guilty about what you did not accomplish. Feel proud of what you did accomplish and readjust your goals for the next time frame to more attainable goals. Here is a sample schedule I’ve seen proposed by some. I have not consistently set goals for each timeframe, but I do typically set 3 small goals a day (this blog post is #2 for today). Each day set 3 small goals Each week set 3 medium goals Each month set 1 large goal Each year set 2 very large goals Tools Tools are an extension of our human body. They help us extend beyond what we can physically and mentally do. Below are some tools I use almost daily or have found useful as of late. Disclaimer: I am not getting endorsed to promote any of these products. I just happen to like them and find them useful. Instapaper – Save internet links for reading later. There are many tools like this but I’ve found this to be a great one. There is even a “read it later” JavaScript button you can add to your browser so when you navigate to a site it will then add this to your list. Stacks for Instapaper – A Windows Phone 7 app for reading my Instapaper articles on the go. It does require a subscription to Instapaper (nominal $3 every three months) but is easily worth the cost. Alternatively you can set up your Kindle to sync with Instapaper easily but I haven’t done so. SlapDash Podcast – Apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8 (possibly other platforms) to sync podcast viewing / listening across multiple devices. Now that I have my Surface RT device (which I love) this is making my consumption easier to manage. Feed Reader – Simple Windows 8 app for quickly catching up on my RSS feeds. I used to have hundreds of unread items all the time. Now I’m down to 20-50 regularly and it is much easier and faster to consume on my Surface RT. There is also a free version (which I use) and I can’t see much different between the free and paid versions currently. Rescue Time – Have you ever wondered how much time you’ve spent on websites vs. email vs. “doing work”? This service tracks your computer actions and then lets you report on them. This can help you quantitatively identify areas where your actions are not in line with your priorities. PowerShell – Windows automation tool. It is now built into every client and server OS. This tool has saved me days (and I mean the full 24 hrs worth) of time and effort in the past year alone. If you haven’t started learning PowerShell and you administrating any Windows OS or server product you need to start today. Various blogging tools – I wrote a post a couple years ago called How I Blog about my blogging process and tools used. Almost all of it still applies today. Personal Health Some of these may be common sense or debatable, but I’ve found them to help prioritize my daily activities. Get plenty of sleep on a regular basis. Sacrificing sleep too many nights a week negatively impacts your cognition, attitude, and overall health. Exercise at least three days. Exercise could be lifting weights, taking the stairs up multiple flights of stairs, walking for 20 mins, or a number of other "non-traditional” activities. I find that regular exercise helps with sleep and improves my overall attitude. Eat a well balanced diet. Too much sugar, caffeine, junk food, etc. are not good for your body. This is not a matter of losing weight but taking care of your body and helping you perform at your peak potential. Email Email can be one of the biggest time consumers (i.e. waster) if you aren’t careful. Time box your email usage. Set a meeting invite for yourself if necessary to limit how much time you spend checking email. Use rules to prioritize your email. Email from external customers, my manager, or include me directly on the To line go into my inbox. Everything else goes a level down and I have 30+ rules to further sort it, mostly distribution lists. Use keyboard shortcuts (when available). I use Outlook for my primary email and am constantly hitting Alt + S to send, Ctrl + 1 for my inbox, Ctrl + 2 for my calendar, Space / Tab / Shift + Tab to mark items as read, and a number of other useful commands. Learn them and you’ll see your speed getting through emails increase. Keep emails short. No one Few people like reading through long emails. The first line should state exactly why you are sending the email followed by a 3-4 lines to support it. Anything longer might be better suited as a phone call or in person discussion. Conclusion In this post I walked through various tips and tricks I’ve found for improving personal productivity. It is a mix of re-focusing on the things that matter, using tools to assist in your efforts, and cutting out actions that are not aligned with your priorities. I originally had a whole section on keyboard shortcuts, but with my recent purchase of the Surface RT I’m finding that touch gestures have replaced numerous keyboard commands that I used to need. I see a big future in touch enabled devices. Hopefully some of these tips help you out. If you have any tools, tips, or ideas you would like to share feel free to add in the comments section. -Frog Out Links Scott Hanselman Productivity posts http://www.hanselman.com/blog/CategoryView.aspx?category=Productivity Overcome your work addiction http://blogs.hbr.org/hbsfaculty/2012/05/overcome-your-work-addiction.html?awid=5512355740280659420-3271 Millennials paralyzed by choice http://priyaparker.com/blog/millennials-paralyzed-by-choice Its Not What You Read Its What You Ignore (video) http://www.hanselman.com/blog/ItsNotWhatYouReadItsWhatYouIgnoreVideoOfScottHanselmansPersonalProductivityTips.aspx Cutting the cord – Jeff Blankenburg http://www.jeffblankenburg.com/2011/04/06/cutting-the-cord/ Building a sitting standing desk – Eric Harlan http://www.ericharlan.com/Everything_Else/building-a-sitting-standing-desk-a229.html Instapaper http://www.instapaper.com/u Stacks for Instapaper http://www.stacksforinstapaper.com/ Slapdash Podcast Windows Phone - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/slapdash-podcasts/90e8b121-080b-e011-9264-00237de2db9e Windows 8 - http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/en-us/app/slapdash-podcasts/0c62e66a-f2e4-4403-af88-3430a821741e/m/ROW Feed Reader http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/en-us/app/feed-reader/d03199c9-8e08-469a-bda1-7963099840cc/m/ROW Rescue Time http://www.rescuetime.com/ PowerShell Script Center http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/bb410849.aspx

  • "Translator by Moth"

    - by Daniel Moth
    This article serves as the manual for the free Windows Phone 7 app called "Translator by Moth". The app is available from the following link (browse the link on your Window Phone 7 phone, or from your PC with zune software installed): http://social.zune.net/redirect?type=phoneApp&id=bcd09f8e-8211-e011-9264-00237de2db9e Startup At startup the app makes a connection to the bing Microsoft Translator service to retrieve the available languages, and also which languages offer playback support (two network calls total). It populates with the results the two list pickers ("from" and "to") on the "current" page. If for whatever reason the network call fails, you are informed via a message box, and the app keeps trying to make a connection every few seconds. When it eventually succeeds, the language pickers on the "current" page get updated. Until it succeeds, the language pickers remain blank and hence no new translations are possible. As you can guess, if the Microsoft Translation service add more languages for textual translation (or enables more for playback) the app will automatically pick those up. "current" page The "current" page is the main page of the app with language pickers, translation boxes and the application bar. Language list pickers The "current" page allows you to pick the "from" and "to" languages, which are populated at start time. Until these language get populated with the results of the network calls, they remain empty and disabled. When enabled, tapping on either of them brings up on a full screen popup the list of languages to pick from, formatted as English Name followed by Native Name (when the latter is known). The "to" list, in addition to the language names, indicates which languages have playback support via a * in front of the language name. When making a selection for the "to" language, and if there is text entered for translation, a translation is performed (so there is no need to tap on the "translate" application bar button). Note that both language choices are remembered between different launches of the application. text for translation The textbox where you enter the translation is always enabled. When there is nothing entered in it, it displays (centered and in italics) text prompting you to enter some text for translation. When you tap on it, the prompt text disappears and it becomes truly empty, waiting for input via the keyboard that automatically pops up. The text you type is left aligned and not in italic font. The keyboard shows suggestions of text as you type. The keyboard can be dismissed either by tapping somewhere else on the screen, or via tapping on the Windows Phone hardware "back" button, or via taping on the "enter" key. In the latter case (tapping on the "enter" key), if there was text entered and if the "from" language is not blank, a translation is performed (so there is no need to tap on the "translate" application bar button). The last text entered is remembered between application launches. translated text The translated text appears below the "to" language (left aligned in normal font). Until a translation is performed, there is a message in that space informing you of what to expect (translation appearing there). When the "current" page is cleared via the "clear" application bar button, the translated text reverts back to the message. Note a subtle point: when a translation has been performed and subsequently you change the "from" language or the text for translation, the translated text remains in place but is now in italic font (attempting to indicate that it may be out of date). In any case, this text is not remembered between application launches. application bar buttons and menus There are 4 application bar buttons and 4 application bar menus. "translate" button takes the text for translation and translates it to the translated text, via a single network call to the bing Microsoft Translator service. If the network call fails, the user is informed via a message box. The button is disabled when there is no "from" language available or when there is not text for translation entered. "play" button takes the translated text and plays it out loud in a native speaker's voice (of the "to" language), via a single network call to the bing Microsoft Translator service. If the network call fails, the user is informed via a message box. The button is disabled when there is no "to" language available or when there is no translated text available. "clear" button clears any user text entered in the text for translation box and any translation present in the translated text box. If both of those are already empty, the button is disabled. It also stops any playback if there is one in flight. "save" button saves the entire translation ("from" language, "to" language, text for translation, and translated text) to the bottom of the "saved" page (described later), and simultaneously switches to the "saved" page. The button is disabled if there is no translation or the translation is not up to date (i.e. one of the elements have been changed). "swap to and from languages" menu swaps around the "from" and "to" languages. It also takes the translated text and inserts it in the text for translation area. The translated text area becomes blank. The menu is disabled when there is no "from" and "to" language info. "send translation via sms" menu takes the translated text and creates an SMS message containing it. The menu is disabled when there is no translation present. "send translation via email" menu takes the translated text and creates an email message containing it (after you choose which email account you want to use). The menu is disabled when there is no translation present. "about" menu shows the "about" page described later. "saved" page The "saved" page is initially empty. You can add translations to it by translating text on the "current" page and then tapping the application bar "save" button. Once a translation appears in the list, you can read it all offline (both the "from" and "to" text). Thus, you can create your own phrasebook list, which is remembered between application launches (it is stored on your device). To listen to the translation, simply tap on it – this is only available for languages that support playback, as indicated by the * in front of them. The sound is retrieved via a single network call to the bing Microsoft Translator service (if it fails an appropriate message is displayed in a message box). Tap and hold on a saved translation to bring up a context menu with 4 items: "move to top" menu moves the selected item to the top of the saved list (and scrolls there so it is still in view) "copy to current" menu takes the "from" and "to" information (language and text), and populates the "current" page with it (switching at the same time to the current page). This allows you to make tweaks to the translation (text or languages) and potentially save it back as a new item. Note that the action makes a copy of the translation, so you are not actually editing the existing saved translation (which remains intact). "delete" menu deletes the selected translation. "delete all" menu deletes all saved translations from the "saved" page – there is no way to get that info back other than re-entering it, so be cautious. Note: Once playback of a translation has been retrieved via a network call, Windows Phone 7 caches the results. What this means is that as long as you play a saved translation once, it is likely that it will be available to you for some time, even when there is no network connection. "about" page The "about" page provides some textual information (that you can view in the screenshot) including a link to the creator's blog (that you can follow on your Windows Phone 7 device). Use that link to discover the email for any feedback. Other UI design info As you can see in the screenshots above, "Translator by Moth" has been designed from scratch for Windows Phone 7, using the nice pivot control and application bar. It also supports both portrait and landscape orientations, and looks equally good in both the light and the dark theme. Other than the default black and white colors, it uses the user's chosen accent color (which is blue in the screenshot examples above). Feedback and support Please report (via the email on the blog) any bugs you encounter or opportunities for performance improvements and they will be fixed in the next update. Suggestions for new features will be considered, but given that the app is FREE, no promises are made. If you like the app, don't forget to rate "Translator by Moth" on the marketplace. Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.
