• Integrated Graphics and Audio as Media Center?

  I'm considering setting up a PC as a Media Center. Mainly to watch movies (ideally HD quality) and listening to music, but also to perform tasks like e-mail, web browsing, ... I quite like the looks and the price of this barebone: http://www.asus.de/Barebone_PC/S_Series_7L/S2P8H61E However it comes with integrated graphics and audio and only has one free PCI-Express slot. Which would mean in the worst case, where both integrated graphics and audio turn out to be insufficient, I could only upgrade one. So is integrated graphics and audio sufficient for a media center solution? Cheers, Will

• Winsock WSAAsyncSelect sending without an infinite buffer

  Hi, This is more of a design question than a specific code question, I'm sure I am missing the obvious, I just need another set of eyes. I am writing a multi-client server based on WSAAsyncSelect, each connection is made into an object of a connection class I have written which contains associated settings and buffers etc. My question concerns FD_WRITE, I understand how it operates: One FD_WRITE is sent immediately after a connection is established. Thereafter, you should send until WSAEWOULDBLOCK is received at which point you store what is left to send in a buffer, and wait to be told that it is ok to send again. This is where I have a problem, how large do I make this holding buffer within each connections object? The amount of time until a new FD_WRITE is received is unknown, I could be attempting to send a lot of stuff during this period, all the time adding to my outgoing buffer. If I make the buffer dynamic, memory usage could spiral out of control if for whatever reason, I am unable to send() and reduce the buffer. So my question is how do you generally handle this situation? Note I am not talking about the network buffer itself which winsock uses, but one of my own creation used to "queue" up sends. • Undeliverable messages to newly migrated Exchange user

  We are in the process of migrating from our old domain to a new one, part of which involves migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. A bunch of users have been migrated already without problems. However, one of the users is having trouble receiving emails from others. When someone sends to him, they get an Undeliverable NDR that says "A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients." The message shows the user's distinguished name as /OU=OurDomain/CN=Recipients/CN=USER57137172. The user's account name should just be "USER", so I don't know where the extra numbers ("57137172") are coming from. Thanks in advance.

• Security measures for CentOS

  I have been tightening up my web server security and wanted to know what else I can do. I am running CentOS 5 with these measures: - All passwords to FTP, MySQL etc are generated from grc.com/passwords.htm and microsoft.com/protect/fraud/passwords/create.aspx (for the ones which cannot be too long). - Running iptables with all ports shut off except for http mail and smtp, the important ports like FTP SSH are blocked to all except my static office IP. There is also no response to pings. - Rootkit Hunter running daily - The server is PCI compliant according to Comodo - Not running any crappy made php apps, we use Zend Framework for our stuff and do have kayako installed and keep them up to date. Can't really think of anything else I can do... I could implement a brute force measure, but I think I already have by simply changing my SSH port to a number above 10000 and blocking it off with iptables.

If I try to send an email, it doesn't work because instead of IMAP, it tries to send email directly from my localhost's mail system. Mutt says it is version Mutt 1.4.2.3i.

• Exchange ActiveSync does not work for one user

  One particular user in our system is unable to connect to Exchange ActiveSync via her iPhone. When I try to connect using my own credentials on her iPhone it works (everything begins syncing), but when I input her credentials, the Settings app verifies the credentials are correct but nothing syncs. For example, if I open Mail, no items are shown. When I attempt to force a sync, it says "Cannot connect to server." In Exchange 2010 Management Console the user is no different than the others. Exchange ActiveSync is set as "Enable" in Mailbox Features. EDIT: Alternatively, if there is some easy way to create a new useraccount/mailbox and copy all of the contents of the old one over, I bet it would work, and that would be fine as well. She is a Mac user so we do not have to worry about her Active Directory account.

• Outlook 2010 Error

  I'm running Outlook 2010 SP1 on Windows 7 x64 SP1, and I'm getting an error message saying "Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance." I'm still able to log into my account using Outlook Web Access (OWA), so I know that my account is working just fine. Outlook 2010 with Service Pack 1 is the standard for Windows 7 client systems at this organization, and other people are able to access their e-mail just fine. When my account was initially configured, I was able to use Outlook for a couple of days, and then it suddenly stopped working, providing only the above error message. Do you have any ideas on what I should look into to resolve this problem? Is there any information I can obtain on the client side that will help the Exchange folks investigate the issue further? Is there any verbose logging I can enable, or diagnostic logging in Outlook? Cheers

• How to locate the line where a vim plugin error occurs: "Mapping not found"

  When I open gvim, it gives "Mapping not found" warning. I found out that the problem is related to the snipmates.vim plugin. But I can't locate where exactly in snipmates.vim file this error is produced. Is there a way to find out the exact cause? Note: gvim 7.2 runs on Windows XP. I found a solution advice in vim mail list. gvim -V20 2>&1 | tee logfile I run this command from command prompt but it doesn't output anything into the logfile. All the logs are written on the entry screen of gvim.

• substitution cypher with different alphabet length

  I would like to implement a simple substitution cypher to mask private ids in URLs I know how my IDs will look like (combination of upperchase ascii, digits and underscore), and they will be rather long, as they are composed keys. I would like to use a longer alphabet to shorten the resulting codes (I'd like to use upper and lower case ascii letters, digits and nothing else). So my incoming alphabet would be [A-Z0-9_] (37 chars) and my outgoing alphabet would be [A-Za-z0-9] (62 chars) so a compression of almost 50% would be available. let's say my URLs look like this: /my/page/GFZHFFFZFZTFZTF_24_F34 and I want them to look like this instead: /my/page/Ft32zfegZFV5 Obviously both arrays would be shuffled to bring some random order in. This does not have to be secure. if someone figures it out: fine, but I don't want the scheme to be obvious. My desired solution would be to convert the string to an integer representation of radix 37, convert the radix to 62 and use the second alphabet to write out that number. is there any sample code available that does something similar? Integer.parseInt ( http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/Integer.html#parseInt%28java.lang.String,%20int%29 ) has some similar logic, but it is hard-coded to use standard digit behavior Any hints? I am using java to implement this but code or pseudo-code in any other language is of course also helpful

• How do you set up redundant servers?

  To the sysadmins out there, I'm trying to get an idea about how you go about maintaining redundant servers for small projects. The modest number of servers in my mind is two, and three main essential services come to mind: HTTP, mail and DNS. How do you automate this duplicity? Is rsync the tool of choice (again, for small projects)? In addition to common tools for these tasks, references to books and articles would be greatly appreciated. • Adding MX records to DNS

  Let's say I have a computer A which is running postfix, computer B is running tinydns. On domain project.domain.com I'm running httpd server and other server with DNS (tinydns) have entries like =project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 and +project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 where 1.2.3.4 is correct addres for server which runs httpd server. I also have a postfix mail server on 1.2.3.5 which I'd like to work with this domain (project.domain.com). I'm afraid that if I add another alias like +project.domain.com:1.2.3.5:86400 to tinydns configuration - it could break. How that entry should look like? Thank you for any hints.

• Postfix Vacation.pl with local users

  Hi, I am trying to setup the vacation.pl script on a mail servers which has local users only (since they are only 10 users). I have installed the SquirrelMail plugin and the Auto respond option is available for the users, but when an email is sent to the addresses no auto reply email is sent to the sender. There are also no logs on the /var/log/vacation folder which i created as well as the normal log files. Most of the examples online refer to virtual users, can it work with local users? and if so how? regards, Arthur

Everything works fine except: When I do an SSH tunnel to the guest server and want to connect to the mailserver with mail.*. then it does not work. There is a connection timeout. But If i connect to the internal IP 192.168..* then it works. So what can I do to enable the access from the domain name to the virtual machine with SSH tunneling?

• Which free IMAP-supporting webmail would you recommend?

  Considering a machine with IIS 7.5/PHP 5.2/asp.net and mysql/MSSQL available, which webmail would you pick? Don't think it's relevant but the mail server is installed on localhost, and is hmailserver. If it's one using asp.net it'd be a bonus, but PHP is ok as well and probably offers more choices. "Client side" look and feel definitely needed, flash/silverlight/ajax not a problem. I have also seen this question, but being asked almost 2years ago and being focused on php webmails, I thought that some better option could've been released in the meantime.

• IIS Reverse Proxy support for multiple protocols

  I have a server 2012 machine running IIS. It's in my DMZ and I would like to use it to do reverse proxy for several services. I can get it to route traffic on port 80 to 2 separate internal servers running web apps but there are some issues when I try to forward SSH (not port 80/443) and then when I try to forward OWA (Micrsoft exchange's 'webmail' services) to the internal mail server I run in to issues with guides (like this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2013/07/19/reverse-proxy-for-exchange-server-2013-using-iis-arr-part-1.aspx) when they say to have all traffic forwarded to the server farm created for OWA. My question for you all is this - given that there is no more Threat Management Gateway (only runs on server 2008) and ISA 2006 is also dead - is it possible to support multiple types of reverse proxies with different protocols (ftp, ssh, web, ssl-web) in IIS, or would it be better to install a different DMZ OS like a nginx server and use linux firewalls + nginx reverse proxy? • Canadian English on Apple products

  Apple is an American company. As many of you probably know, Canadian English is different from American English, and closer to British English (e.g. colour instead of color). I use iWork and Microsoft Office for Mac (along with many other applications on OS X), and OS X, nor my iPhone, have an option to switch to Canadian English. Yes, you can select Canadian English as an input language in the language bar, but any program that uses the central OS X spell checking (from Mail to Office to iWork to Chrome) will check words against an American English dictionary. I know asking a question that involves an iPhone component is borderline off-topic, but I know on my iPhone I can select British English, but that turns my $ into £ and has a few other weird spelling quirks. Simple question: Is it possible to make OS X (and maybe the iPhone) use a Canadian English dictionary for its spell checking? Because British English just doesn't cut it anymore. Thanks!

• My site was recently attacked. What do I do?

  This is a first for me. One of the sites I run was recently attacked. Not at all an intelligent attack - pure brute force - hit every page and every non-page with every extension possible. Posted with garbage data to every form and tried to post to some random urls too. All tod, 16000 requests in one hour. What should I do to prevent/alert this kind of behavior? Is there a way to limit the request/hr for a given ip/client? Is there a place I should be reporting the user to? They appear to be from China and did leave what seems like a valid e-mail.

• Configure spamassassin to mark very similar messages as spam

  Users on my server have been receiving spam, consistently, for some time now. I have most of spamassassin's plugins enabled, and I have made sure to enable verbose logging, where I can see that all of the plugins are working. Why is it, then, that my users are able to receive the same exact junk mail several times in a day without the message being flagged in some way? Here are the relevant headers of an email that I personally have received several copies of: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.3.1 (2010-03-16) on sub.domain.tld X-Spam-Level: *** X-Spam-Status: No, score=3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_50,FSL_HELO_NON_FQDN_1, HELO_NO_DOMAIN,HTML_MESSAGE,RCVD_IN_BRBL_LASTEXT,RDNS_NONE autolearn=no version=3.3.1 Have I accidentally missed the plugin that can see that I, and others, have received the same message multiple times in a short period of time?

• Is it illegal to download (from torrents) software that you have already legally bought?

  With Snow Leopard now out, I decided to order myself a copy. But as I bought it online, it takes six to eight weeks three to five days for to to arrive via snail mail, but I want it now. Seeing that I have already legally bought a license for Snow Leopard, can I download a retail version of Snow Leopard from a torrent, without breaking the law? I understand that the law varies from country to country, so I acknowledge that this may be a tough question to answer sufficiently. • Setup secure shared hosting (Apache, PHP, MySQL)

  So I'm setting up a shared hosting with Apache, PHP, MySQL and the biggest question mark is how to do with PHP, since there is a million options out there how to configure it securely. The plan is: Chroot for MySQL (built in support for chroot) Chroot for Apache (mod_security) Each user executing their PHP-scripts as their own user (see below) Set open_basedir Disable all "evil" php-functions (allow_url_fopen, system, exec, and so on) Ive looked at suexec and suphp but they seems very slow; http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2007/12/18/using-suexec-to-secure-a-shared-server/ http://blog.stuartherbert.com/php/2008/01/18/using-suphp-to-secure-a-shared-server/ So I've looked some more and found some other solutions: apache2-mpm-itk + mod_php(?) mod_fcgid + php-fpm mod_fastcgi + php-fpm Ive tried a simple setup with mod_fastcgi + php-fpm and it seems to work, runs as correct user and so on, but the protection against directory traveling is still open_basedir(?) One solution for that could be to use php-fpm's chroot option, but that causes a lot of other issues like domain name resolver does not work sending mail does not work Tips?

• Postfix SMTP sends to localhost, ignores MX records set to Google Apps

  I have the MX records for zaltin.com set to the Google Apps domains (aspmx.l.google.com etc.). If an email is sent to [email protected] from most places, it goes to my Google Apps account. However, on the zaltin.com server (Ubuntu 10.04 if it matters), sending via SMTP (postfix), if I send to [email protected] (via the Pony ruby gem if it matters), it simply routes to kerrick@localhost (showing up via the mail command) instead of going to my Google Apps account (where it should show up in my GApps Gmail inbox). Can I make email sent via SMTP on my server, through my server, not go to my server but to Google Apps?

  While testing to send multiple emails, I successfully sent about 100 emails (with a 20KB pdf attachment), to the same email-address (my own), and they were all received. But on next attempt, my cPanel account was blocked, due to a "brute force attempt". Are there any special precautions I need to take when sending bulk emails? • Automatic LaTex document generation from Excel spreadsheet

  I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex. It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX. Thanks.

• How to put several files in one archive?

  I have 10 files which I need to send per e-mail. It is inconvenient for me all 10 files and it will be inconvenient for the receiver to download all 10 files (it can be annoying to do the same operation 10 times). I would like to put all 10 files into one files (I think it can be done as archive). How can I do it? Important details. I am working in the Windows 7 and prefer to do the mentioned operation from the command line. In the directory, where I have my 10 files, I have many other files which I would not like to include into the archive. The files are small, so compression rate and size do not play any role. I just one to have an easy way to put 10 files into one and then easily to extract these 10 files.
