  • Apache unresponsive on Vista [closed]

    I had been running Apache on Vista for around a year, but recently upgraded my workstation. I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate and installed the latest version of the Apache server for win32 (2.2.11, no SSL). The service runs fine and there were no errors reported during the install, nor are there any errors in the Apache logs. However, any attempt to access the web site on localhost (or 127.0.0.1) just hangs the browser. I have used netstat to check who is listening to port 80 and it shows httpd.exe. I have also tried adjusting the .conf file to use port 8080 but this had no effect either (except to change the netstat output). This is a development system with quite a few other pieces of software installed. However, when I tried installing IIS, it worked fine (I removed it soon after before reattempting the Apache install). Using the older 2.0 version of Apache has no effect. Windows firewall is not running. I have disabled my NOD32 anti-virus. Any ideas what is going on? Regards, William

    I'm trying to install Microsoft Visual C# Express 2010 Beta 2 on my machine but it's not working. It blazes through what should be a 150 MB download then fails installing the very first item after about 5 seconds. I had VS 2010 Beta 1 installed but removed it beforehand. Any tips for installing it right?     Assuming we are not concerned about running time of the program (which is practically infinite for human mortals), we want to print out in base 10, the exact value of 10^(googolplex), one digit at a time (mostly zeros). Describe an algorithm (which can be coded on current day computers), or write a program to do this. Since we cannot practically check the output, so we will rely on collective opinion on the correctness of the program. NOTE : I do not know the solution, or whether a solution exists or not. The problem is my own invention. To those readers who think this is not a CS question... kindly reconsider. This is difficult and bit theoretical but definitely CS.

  • libevent buffered events and half-closed sockets

    It is simple to implement a port mapper using bufferevent_* functions of libevent. However, the documentation states that "This file descriptor is not allowed to be a pipe(2)". Will libevent work correctly if I shutdown the socket in one direction shutdown(socket, SHUT_WR);? I expect it to discard remaining data in the buffer and not write there anymore, but continue reading from socket and calling a read handler.

  • My PNG has transparency, but after saving with PHP GD, transparency is lost [closed]

    I found the solution to my problem. See below the original post and completely at the bottom my solution. I made a stupid mistake :) First I crop an image and then save it to a png file. Right after this, I also show the image. However, the saved png does not have transparency and the shown one has. What is going on? $this->resource = imagecreatefrompng($this->url); imagealphablending($this->resource, false); imagesavealpha($this->resource, true); $newResource = imagecreatetruecolor($destWidth, $destHeight); imagealphablending($newResource, false); imagesavealpha($newResource, true); $resample = imagecopyresampled($newResource,$this->resource,0,0,$srcX1,$srcY1,$destWidth,$destHeight,$srcX2-$srcX1, $srcY2-$srcY1); imagedestroy($this->resource); $this->resource = $newResource; // SAVING imagepng($this->resource, $destination, 100); // SHOWING header('Content-type: image/png'); imagepng($this->resource); The reason I also save the image is for caching. If the script is executed on a png, it saves a cached png. Next time the image is requested, the png file will be shown, but it has lost its transparency. Even stranger: When I save that cached png image as (within Firefox), it saves it suddenly as a jpg, even though the extension was png. Downloading the cached png using chrome and opening it in Photoshop gives the error: "file-format module cannot parse the file". I will show you the shown PNG and the generated PNG: http://www.foodmuseum.nl/SaveProblemTransparency.png Once I try to show that saved PNG with the GD library, it gives me an error. EDIT NO NO NO NO THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE!!!... I ALREADY USED THEIR SOLUTION. The solution in the supposedly duplicate works for showing my image. But I also try to save it with the exact same resource, but then it has no transparency. EDIT 2 - SOLUTION I found out what the problem was. It was a stupid mistake. The script I provided above were cut out of a class and placed as sequential code, while in real this is not what exactly happened.     hi, I have a .zip file (It contains multiple files, ex: file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt.. n so on) in a directory. And my query is: How to extract the files from .zip archive to the very same directory and how to create the list of all the files extracted from .zip archive.** The extracted file name should be printed like this in the file named: file_list: file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt filen.txt I have tried the following command assuming that my .zip file name is "data.zip". unzip -qoj data.zip | unzip -ql data.zip > file_list I have used unzip -qoj data.zip to extract all the files in the same directory(quietly,overwrite,junk_path). When I try to insert -l with the first unzip command then the command doesn't extract the file in the current and only files are listed thats why I have to used unzip again after the first pipe(If I am making a mistake here let me know please). I happen to be from functional background (ML, to be specific) and so for me composition and abstraction are the two basic elements of programming. But this MrSmartyPants has got some kind of superiority complex and he'd always argue with me that abstraction is for lame programmers and _real_ programmers do not need it. Is it a problem with this guy or all C programmers have this opinion that abstraction is for lame programmers?

    As requested, I split this question from a two part question I asked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2482071/modern-web-development-general-question My question is how do i convince the young programmers who interview me that my years of system programming experience, MFC, Win32 programming are still relevant and I should not be automatically rejected because I don't know the differences between Drupal and <pick your technology>. It seems like I can ask a dozen question that these guys won't be able to answer but somehow because I don't know the latest fad counts against me. I do read, but if you don't use what you read in your daily work, you will never have expert knowledge of it. So bottom line: is the only way for me to take a .NET or Java job is for me to start at the bottom all over?

  • Why is VB so popular? [closed]

    To me, Visual Basic seems clumsy, ugly, error-prone, and difficult to read. I'll let others explain why. While VB.net has clearly been a huge leap forward for the language in terms of features, I still don't understand why anyone would choose to code in VB over, say, C#. However, I still see (what seems to be) the vast majority of commercial web apps from "MS shops" are built in VB. I could stand corrected on this, but VB still seems more popular than it deserves. Can anyone help answer any (or all) of these questions: Am I missing something with VB? Is it easier to learn, or "friendlier" than C#? Are there features I don't know about? Why is VB/VB.net so frequently used today, especially in web projects?

  • Corrupted version of WordPad [closed]

    Somehow in trying to cleanup my computer's hard drive, I have inadvertently corrupted WordPad, which I have long used for viewing many types of files, including logs (i.e., log4j). Now when I right click one of these files and choose "open with" & WordPad, I get an error (fn is not a valid Win32 application). I've researched this issue, tried reinstalling wordpad.exe; bbut I still get the same error. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
