• no-www redirect not working / DNS A record

  I'm far from an expert on this, but I'll try to be as clear as possible. I have an eshop solution leased from a company and it's hosted on their server. I can access it thru company.com/myshop and it also allows me to set up to 3 domains that they should recognize and redirect to my specific shop from. I registered a domain with a different company and am trying to "redirect" it to the eshop. By means of one of the following DNS entries (as they look in the admin GUI) * A 111.111.111.111 *.myshop.com A 111.111.111.111 myshop.com A 111.111.111.111 I've managed to make www.myshop.com redirect to the IP of company.com (111.111.111.111), which then goes on to do exactly what I expect it to do (ie. recognizes it comes from my domain, does some further redirects itself). However, I can't seem to make myshop.com (ie. without the www) redirect to that IP, too. The company that I registered the domain with provides a "URL redirect" service, but google would only register the redirect request and wouldn't follow it. That's why I hope for a DNS solution to this - my assumption being I've managed to miss adding a record to the DNS; if, however, the reason lies elsewhere, I'd be happy to hear about that too. If it's a search engine friendly solution (ie the www/no-www dilemma - avoidance of double content penalties), then that's even better; have no prefference either way (www/no-www), just need it to work. • A Kingdom To Conquer: Character Sketches

  Still not 100% sold on my title so it remains a working title for now, but here’s a series of character sketches I’ve done for a turn based strategy game I’m playing at making. I’ve been sketching these on various pieces of paper throughout the last two weeks and just finished the last of them today (my plan was for 16 different types of units and well, now I have them, so I consider that done!).                    Pretty rough sketches for now, but I’m pretty happy with the art style overall. I was wrestling for quite a while just HOW I wanted the game to look and then I finally stumbled across Art Baltazar and I was like, THAT’S IT! There’s a few characters I need to re-do a bit more, I feel they’re a bit TOO much like some of the characters that inspired them but I’m happy that the ideas are finally sketched out. I’ve also been playing a bit in InkScape working on making these guys digital. A pretty new experience for me since I’m not used to working with vector images but I think I’ll get the hang of it. Here’s the Knight all vectorized. Now if I could just start making some progress on the actual game itself…

• Should certain math classes be required for a Computer Science degree?

  For a Computer Science (CS) degree at many colleges and universities, certain math courses are required: Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics are few examples. However, since I've started working in the real world as a software developer, I have yet to truly use some the knowledge I had at once acquired from taking those classes. Discrete Math might be the only exception. My questions: Should these math classes be required to obtain a computer science degree? Or would they be better served as electives? I'm challenging even that the certain math classes even help with required CS classes. For example, I never used linear algebra outside of the math class itself. I hear it's used in Computer Graphics, but I never took those classes-- yet linear algebra was required for a CS degree. I personally think it could be better served as an elective rather than requirement because it's more specific to a branch of CS rather than general CS. The link is used to exchange control, status, and data between the I/O module and the external device. External devices can be classified into 3 categories… Human readable – e.g. video display Machine readable – e.g. magnetic disk Communications – e.g. wifi card I/O Modules An I/O module has two major functions… Interface to the processor and memory via the system bus or central switch Interface to one or more peripheral devices by tailored data links Module Functions The major functions or requirements for an I/O module fall into the following categories… Control and timing Processor communication Device communication Data buffering Error detection I/O function includes a control and timing requirement, to coordinate the flow of traffic between internal resources and external devices. Processor communication involves the following… Command decoding Data Status reporting Address recognition The I/O device must be able to perform device communication. This communication involves commands, status information, and data. An essential task of an I/O module is data buffering due to the relative slow speeds of most external devices. An I/O module is often responsible for error detection and for subsequently reporting errors to the processor. I/O Module Structure An I/O module functions to allow the processor to view a wide range of devices in a simple minded way. The I/O module may hide the details of timing, formats, and the electro mechanics of an external device so that the processor can function in terms of simple reads and write commands. An I/O channel/processor is an I/O module that takes on most of the detailed processing burden, presenting a high-level interface to the processor. There are 3 techniques are possible for I/O operations Programmed I/O Interrupt[t I/O DMA Access Programmed I/O When a processor is executing a program and encounters an instruction relating to I/O it executes that instruction by issuing a command to the appropriate I/O module. With programmed I/O, the I/O module will perform the requested action and then set the appropriate bits in the I/O status register. The I/O module takes no further actions to alert the processor. I/O Commands To execute an I/O related instruction, the processor issues an address, specifying the particular I/O module and external device, and an I/O command. There are four types of I/O commands that an I/O module may receive when it is addressed by a processor… Control – used to activate a peripheral and tell it what to do Test – Used to test various status conditions associated with an I/O module and its peripherals Read – Causes the I/O module to obtain an item of data from the peripheral and place it in an internal buffer Write – Causes the I/O module to take an item of data form the data bus and subsequently transmit that data item to the peripheral The main disadvantage of this technique is it is a time consuming process that keeps the processor busy needlessly I/O Instructions With programmed I/O there is a close correspondence between the I/O related instructions that the processor fetches from memory and the I/O commands that the processor issues to an I/O module to execute the instructions. Typically there will be many I/O devices connected through I/O modules to the system – each device is given a unique identifier or address – when the processor issues an I/O command, the command contains the address of the address of the desired device, thus each I/O module must interpret the address lines to determine if the command is for itself. When the processor, main memory and I/O share a common bus, two modes of addressing are possible… Memory mapped I/O Isolated I/O (for a detailed explanation read page 245 of book) The advantage of memory mapped I/O over isolated I/O is that it has a large repertoire of instructions that can be used, allowing more efficient programming. The disadvantage of memory mapped I/O over isolated I/O is that valuable memory address space is sued up. Interrupts driven I/O Interrupt driven I/O works as follows… The processor issues an I/O command to a module and then goes on to do some other useful work The I/O module will then interrupts the processor to request service when is is ready to exchange data with the processor The processor then executes the data transfer and then resumes its former processing Interrupt Processing The occurrence of an interrupt triggers a number of events, both in the processor hardware and in software. When an I/O device completes an I/O operations the following sequence of hardware events occurs… The device issues an interrupt signal to the processor The processor finishes execution of the current instruction before responding to the interrupt The processor tests for an interrupt – determines that there is one – and sends an acknowledgement signal to the device that issues the interrupt. The acknowledgement allows the device to remove its interrupt signal The processor now needs to prepare to transfer control to the interrupt routine. To begin, it needs to save information needed to resume the current program at the point of interrupt. The minimum information required is the status of the processor and the location of the next instruction to be executed. The processor now loads the program counter with the entry location of the interrupt-handling program that will respond to this interrupt. It also saves the values of the process registers because the Interrupt operation may modify these The interrupt handler processes the interrupt – this includes examination of status information relating to the I/O operation or other event that caused an interrupt When interrupt processing is complete, the saved register values are retrieved from the stack and restored to the registers Finally, the PSW and program counter values from the stack are restored. Design Issues Two design issues arise in implementing interrupt I/O Because there will be multiple I/O modules, how does the processor determine which device issued the interrupt? If multiple interrupts have occurred, how does the processor decide which one to process? Addressing device recognition, 4 general categories of techniques are in common use… Multiple interrupt lines Software poll Daisy chain Bus arbitration For a detailed explanation of these approaches read page 250 of the textbook. Interrupt driven I/O while more efficient than simple programmed I/O still requires the active intervention of the processor to transfer data between memory and an I/O module, and any data transfer must traverse a path through the processor. Thus is suffers from two inherent drawbacks… The I/O transfer rate is limited by the speed with which the processor can test and service a device The processor is tied up in managing an I/O transfer; a number of instructions must be executed for each I/O transfer Direct Memory Access When large volumes of data are to be moved, an efficient technique is direct memory access (DMA) DMA Function DMA involves an additional module on the system bus. The DMA module is capable of mimicking the processor and taking over control of the system from the processor. It needs to do this to transfer data to and from memory over the system bus. DMA must the bus only when the processor does not need it, or it must force the processor to suspend operation temporarily (most common – referred to as cycle stealing). When the processor wishes to read or write a block of data, it issues a command to the DMA module by sending to the DMA module the following information… Whether a read or write is requested using the read or write control line between the processor and the DMA module The address of the I/O device involved, communicated on the data lines The starting location in memory to read from or write to, communicated on the data lines and stored by the DMA module in its address register The number of words to be read or written, communicated via the data lines and stored in the data count register The processor then continues with other work, it delegates the I/O operation to the DMA module which transfers the entire block of data, one word at a time, directly to or from memory without going through the processor. When the transfer is complete, the DMA module sends an interrupt signal to the processor, this the processor is involved only at the beginning and end of the transfer. I/O Channels and Processors Characteristics of I/O Channels As one proceeds along the evolutionary path, more and more of the I/O function is performed without CPU involvement. The I/O channel represents an extension of the DMA concept. An I/O channel ahs the ability to execute I/O instructions, which gives it complete control over I/O operations. In a computer system with such devices, the CPU does not execute I/O instructions – such instructions are stored in main memory to be executed by a special purpose processor in the I/O channel itself. Two types of I/O channels are common A selector channel controls multiple high-speed devices. A multiplexor channel can handle I/O with multiple characters as fast as possible to multiple devices. The external interface: FireWire and InfiniBand Types of Interfaces One major characteristic of the interface is whether it is serial or parallel parallel interface – there are multiple lines connecting the I/O module and the peripheral, and multiple bits are transferred simultaneously serial interface – there is only one line used to transmit data, and bits must be transmitted one at a time With new generation serial interfaces, parallel interfaces are becoming less common. In either case, the I/O module must engage in a dialogue with the peripheral. • How to use T4 templates in WP7, Silverlight, Desktop or even MonoDroid apps

  In other words, how to use T4 templates without ANY runtime dependencies? Yes, it is possible, and quite simple and elegant actually. In a desktop project, just open the Add New Item dialog, and search for "text template": From the two available templates, the one that gives you a zero-dependency runtime-usable template is the first one: Preprocessed Text Template. Once unfolded, you get the .tt file, but also a dependent .cs file automatically generated. Note the Custom Tool associated with the file: If you open up the .cs file, you will see that it doesn't contain the rendered "Hello World!!!" • SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services

  Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity.  So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the Midwest Geeks group which started as the community of Microsoft related user groups in our region uses SkyDrive groups and shares calendars and documents.  This collaboration aspect isn’t new in itself, but having it connected with the rest of your cloud assets makes life easier. Another recent usage of this type of cloud service is storing your personal music files in order to get that same universal access.  This is a scenario that has some arguments for and against.  On the one hand own once and listen anywhere is great, but the on the other hand the bandwidth cost becomes a giant downside.  This is especially the case since most carriers are now doing away with unlimited data packages. Ultimately I see this type of resource growing an evolving at a phenomenal rate over the next few years as we continue to become more mobile.  Having multiple players such as SkyDrive and iCloud will only help to give us more options.  Only time will tell where we end up next. del.icio.us Tags: SkyDrive,Cloud Services,Paul Thurrott,UserCommunity

• Is meta description still relevant?

  I received this bit of advice about the meta description tag recently: Meta descriptions are used by Google probably 80% of the time for the snippet. They don’t help with rankings but you should probably use them. You could just auto generate them from the first part of the question. The description tag exists in the header, like so: <meta name="Description" content="A brief summary of the content on the page."> I'm not sure why we would need this field, as Google seems perfectly capable of showing the relevant search terms in context in the search result pages, like so (I searched for c# list performance): In other words, where would a meta description summary improve these results? We want the page to show context around the actual search hits, not a random summary we inserted! Google Webmaster Central has this advice: For some sites, like news media sources, generating an accurate and unique description for each page is easy: since each article is hand-written, it takes minimal effort to also add a one-sentence description. For larger database-driven sites, like product aggregators, hand-written descriptions are more difficult. In the latter case, though, programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged -- just make sure that your descriptions are not "spammy." Good descriptions are human-readable and diverse, as we talked about in the first point above. The page-specific data we mentioned in the second point is a good candidate for programmatic generation. I'm struggling to think of any scenario when I would want the Google-generated summary, that is, actual context from the page for the search terms, to be replaced by a hard-coded meta description summary of the question itself.

• NTP service, offset increasing after sync

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 version on my PC. I am running NTP service having NTP server as GPS. I found that when we start NTP service by ntp start command, PC is able to sync with GPS as i get '*' symbol before GPS IP when i run ntpq -p command. This remains good for some time and then the * symbol is removed which means that PC is not synchronized to that server. • Linking a facebook app's page to an existing facebook business page

  I have a facebook app page, and a separate facebook business profile page. The business page was created, but not by me, some time before the app and its page were created. Is there any way to connect the two pages, or import the content and friends from one to the other? The older profile page has some content; a set of friends and wall posts that I don't want to lose. It was created before I had a chance to set up an app page. Since the app was created more recently, it does not have any content posted to it. I intended the app page to eventually hold some advertising info for my main website itself (non-canvas, just using fb for the connect api etc). The idea being that as people sign up on my site through facebook's OAuth, I could use the graph api to post to their wall. The wall posts are working as expected but naturally they are directing users to the facebook app page, which has no content, friends etc. I'd prefer to be directed to the original business page, where the party is really happening. Now it seems that the two pages are completely separate; what would I need to do to direct the users to the business page?

• How do I get a Canon MG, MP and MX series USB printer working?

  Printer MP6150 driver installed itself upon plugging in the printer. Printer is recognized (lsusb shows it) but does not mount. If the printer is recognized, the driver must be working (or?), but something is blocking the system from mounting the printer.   Welcome to this year's JavaOne conference! We are glad you dropped by. We want to keep you informed of all the happenings around JavaOne: all the events leading up to the conference and all the events during the conference week itself. We'll cover announcements, news, planning (but we won't make you go to any meetings), and snafus (nothing that makes us look too bad, of course). We'll even throw in a contest or two to make sure you are paying attention. We'll post a couple of times a week, and then more frequently as we get closer to September. There's a group of us, and we cover the Java beat, JUGs, Oracle Technology Network, Oracle Solaris, and lots more. What do you want to hear about? Let us know.A group of us from the office went to see the movie Iron Man 2 (it just debuted in the United States) last week and it reminded us of Java, the Java community, and JavaOne. In all three cases, from many disparate (and sometimes seemingly incompatible) parts and people, something comes together that works, is cool, and helps make a better world. Right now, there are hundreds of little islands of planning, all busy answering questions for JavaOne: What sessions get selected? What goes in the Mason street tent (until a few weeks ago, Will there be a tent on Mason street?), What do the JUGS need? Which Oracle ACEs will be there? Can we do a surf theme at the OTN party? And, somehow, like an Iron Man suit, they all come together and work to make a great event. At least, we hope it will be great. That's for you to decide. • Developing a long pannable, sprite-animated Windows Store app

  I am creating my first Windows Store app in XAML, and I cannot seem to find a proper example for the requirements I have (I have spent a couple of days fiddling around, so I apologize if I missed something obvious). Basic idea of the app is to have a large scrollable canvas which would lazily start animating visible parts of the view as soon as user stops panning over a certain content (with some audio played also): My original idea was to use a StackPanel to add a bunch of custom controls, each of which would then animate itself once visible (with a short delay), but I have a couple of concerns: If the entire canvas is ~50 screen widths wide, is it feasible to load all content at the beginning, or do I need to plan doing some lazy loading during scrolling? For example, when I select a certain region in the Bing Travel app, it seems to lazily load tiles as I scroll it towards the end. Since content is stretched 100% vertically, and these animations are vectorized to be resolution independent, I am not sure if XAML (CompositionTarget) will be able to handle this, or I have to go for DirectX (MonoGame or C++) to get rid of flicker. Even better, is there an example for Windows 8 which uses a 100% vertically sized GridView with custom animated controls inside?

• C# wpf helix scale based mesh parenting using Transform3DGroup

  I am using https://helixtoolkit.codeplex.com/ as a 3D framework. I want to move black mesh relative to the green mesh as shown in the attached image below. I want to make green mesh parent to the black mesh as the change in scale of the green mesh also will result in motion of the black mesh. It could be partial parenting or may be more. I need 3D rotation and 3D transition + transition along green mesh's length axis for the black mesh relative to the green mesh itself. Suppose a variable green_mesh_scale causing scale for the green mesh along its length axis. The black mesh will use that variable in order to move along green mesh's length axis. How to go about it. I think i just need to avoid the scale part. I tried keeping all the transforms but scale, on another Transform3DGroup variable but that also not behaving as expected. Can MatrixTransform3D be used here some how? Also please suggest if this question can be posted somewhere else in stackexchange.

• Is there a distributed project management software like Redmine?

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. So, can you recommend me a distributed project management software? If your suggestion is a software that usually runs on a server please include a description of the distribution method (e.g. whether simply putting the data in a git repository would do the trick), and if it's e.g. trac, please mention plugins required to include the features mentioned.

Use the setup tool to set the signing and SSL certificate. You can now also set the ACLs on the private key for your worker pool account. IIS is required . SSL for the IIS site the STS runs in is required. Users of the STS must be in the 'IdentityServerUsers' role. Admins of the STS must be in the 'IdentityServerAdministrators' roles. What’s new? Mainly smaller bits and pieces and some refactoring. The biggest under the cover change is a new authorization model for the STS itself. If, e.g. you don’t like the new roles I introduced, you can easily change the behavior in the claims authorization manager in the STS web site project. What’s missing? The big one is Azure support. Not that I ran into unforeseeable problems here, I just wanted to wait until the on-premise version is more stabilized. Now with B1 I can start adding Azure support back.

• Browser-based GUI for a python application

  I want to create a web/browser-based GUI for a command-line python application. The goal is to make use of HTML/JS technologies to create this GUI. As the application itself, it needs to run on Linux and Windows, and the interface will be accessible only from localhost (not exposed to internet). The GUI will contain 5 to 10 pages. I don't want a traditional desktop GUI that includes HTML/JS, but just a bunch of html files and some kind of controller between those and the application. I also want to make use of asynchronous programming (ajax like) so I can load and print data in the GUI without refreshing the whole page. I'd probably use jQuery for that and a couple other things. How would you recommend to design this? Performance is not the key here, I'm rather looking at reliability, portability and simplicity. I'm thinking of using a lightweight python HTTP server / framework (like CherryPy) and maybe later a Python templating system (at the begining it will just be a couple pages). EDIT: I'm looking for ideas/recommendations how to build this, not for alternatives to browser/web-based GUI.

• How to manage a multiplayer asynchronous environment in a game

  I'm working on a game where players can setup villages, which can contain defending units. Any of these units (each on their own tiles) can be set to "campaign" which means they are no longer defending but can now be used to attack other villages. And each unit on a tile can have up to a 100 health. So far so good. Oh and it's all asynchronous so even though the server will be aware that your village is being attacked, you won't be until the attack is over. The issue I'm struggling with, is the following situation. Let's say a unit on a tile is being attacked by a player from another village. The other player see's your village and is attacking your units. You don't know this is happening though, so you set your unit to campaign and off you go to attack another village, with the unit which itself is actually being attacked by this other player. The other player stops attacking your village and leaves your unit with say a health of 1, which is then saved to the server. You however have this same unit are attacking another village with it, but now you discover that even though it started off with a 100 health, now mysteriously it only has 1... Solutions? Ideas? Edit The simplest solutions are often the best. I referred to Clash of clans below, well after a bit more digging it seems that in CoC you can only attack players that are offline! ha, that almost solves the problem. I say almost because there's still the situation where a players village could be in the process of being attacked when they come back online, still need to address that. Edit 2 A solution to the "What happens when a player is attacking your village and you come online" issue, could be the attacking player just get's kicked out of the village at that point and just get's whatever they had won up to that point, it's a bit of a fudge but it might work.

• FileOpenPicker/FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations

  On Twitter, Matthias Jauernig commented that the FileOpenPicker and FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations. I was relaxed about this and wrote back that it was related to sandboxing implying it was a "good thing", however as Matthias commented back, perhaps it's not.In Metro-style the sandboxing works that if something gives you a file (e.g. the picker, or a share operation), you can access it regardless of where on the system. If you find the file yourself, you have to declare the type.The reason why I think it's related to sandboxing is because if you work with files programmatically you have to be explicit about the file types. This is to stop malware that you think is only interested in - say .PDF files, scanning and uploading any .EML files that it can find on the machine. It follows then on the pickers that restriction would continue. It allow's the retail store team to validate that an app is likely to behave itself. If it's an app that works with images, locking down the picker so that it can only access image file types makes sense.However Matthias mentioned that he has an app that should allow files of any arbitrary file. That fits more into the "if the user selects it, it must be OK" camp than the "programmatic scanning" camp. So now I'm left wondering why the picker doesn't allow any type to be selected.I think then maybe the decision comes down to simplicity. A lot of the decisions in Metro-style design relate to ideas about "zero intimidation". Allow the user to select any file is too much like Old Windows, and not enough like Reimagined Windows. What happens in Matthias's app if the user selects Explorer.exe as the file he or she wants to work with? I guess it's fine if you expect your user to know what they're doing (Old Windows), but not so fine if you're expecting a three year old to work with it (Reimagined Windows).

• Encrypting a non-linux partition with LUKS.

  I have a non-Linux partition I want to encrypt with LUKS. The goal is to be able to store it by itself on a device without Linux and access it from the device when needed with an Ubuntu Live CD. I know LUKS can't encrypt partitions in place, so I created another, unformatted partition of the EXACT same size (using GParted's "Round to MiB" option) and ran this command: sudo cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/xxx Where xxx is the partition's device name. Then I typed in my new passphrase and confirmed it. Oddly, the command exited immediately after, so I guess it doesn't encrypt the entire partition right away? Anyway, then I ran this command: sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/xxx xxx Then I tried copying the contents of the existing partition (call it yyy) to the encrypted one like this: sudo dd if=/dev/yyy of=/dev/mapper/xxx bs=1MB and it ran for a while, but exited with this: dd: writing `/dev/mapper/xxx': No space left on device just before writing the last MB. I take this to mean the contents of yyy was truncated when it was copied to xxx, because I have dd'd it before, and whenever I have dd'd to a partition of the exact same size, I never get that error. (and fdisk reports they are the same size in blocks). After a little Googling I discovered all luksFormat'ted partitions have a custom header followed by the encrypted contents. So it appears I need to create a partition exactly the size of the old one + however many bytes a LUKS header is. What size should the destination partition be, no. 1, and no. 2, am I even on the right track here? UPDATE I found this in the LUKS FAQ: I think this is overly complicated. Is there an alternative? Yes, you can use plain dm-crypt. It does not allow multiple passphrases, but on the plus side, it has zero on disk description and if you overwrite some part of a plain dm-crypt partition, exactly the overwritten parts are lost (rounded up to sector borders). So perhaps I shouldn't be using LUKS at all?

• OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

  Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... I've also read I may have to add routes to the router itself, but haven't tried that. Any help appreciated, thanks!

• Estimating cost of labor for a controlled experiment

  Let's say you are a software engineering researcher and you are designing a controlled experiment to compare two software technologies or techniques (e.g., TDD vs. non-TDD, Python vs. Go) with respect to some qualities of interest (e.g., quality of resulting code, programmer productivity). According to your study design, participants will work alone to implement a non-trivial software system. You estimate it should take about six months for a single programmer to complete the task. You also estimate via power analysis that you will need around sixty study participants to obtain statistically significant results, assuming the technologies actually do yield different outcomes. To maximize external validity, you want to use professional programmers as study participants. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to find professional programmers who can volunteer for several months to work full-time on implementing a software system. You decide to go the simplest route and contract with a large IT consulting firm to obtain access to programmers to participate in the study. What is a reasonable estimate of the cost range, per person-month, for the programming labor? Assume you are constrained to work with a U.S.-based firm, but it doesn't matter where in the U.S. the firm itself or the programmers or located. Note: I'm looking for a reasonable order-of-magnitude range suitable for back-of-the-envelope calculations so that when people say "Why doesn't somebody just do a study to measure X", I can say, "Because running that study properly would cost $Y", and have a reasonable argument for the value of $Y.

• The lifecycle of "cool"

  I've been thinking lately about how some programming projects/products become "cool," and in particular, how that trend can later reverse. Here are two examples that might better explain my context: Textmate Whenever someone asks about text editors on OS X, the answer on the SE sites is an automatic "Textmate!" But looked at objectively: Textmate 1.0 shipped October 2004 Textmate 1.5 shipped January 2006 Textmate 2 was announced February 2006 As of September 2010, the currently shipping version is 1.5.9 In all of 2010, there have been a total of three posts on the Textmate blog At what point (if ever) do Textmate fans start thinking about switching to another text editor? When it breaks after some future Apple update? When alpha geeks they respect start recommending something else? Or? jQuery Whenever a JavaScript-related question is asked on the SE sites, the knee-jerk response is "jQuery!" I've seen it happen even when the question itself only required a single line of JavaScript. Or when the question could be better answered by using CSS. Do the answerers understand they're suggesting a blowtorch to light a candle? That they're recommending adding 70K or so of code to do something trivial? Or is it a symptom of "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail"—that is, jQuery is all they know how to do, so that's their recommendation? And do they understand that while they may know jQuery well, that doesn't necessarily mean that they know JavaScript? Is there a way to explain that learning JavaScript would make them better jQuery programmers? My bigger-picture questions: Is this niche focus primarily a trait of programmers? How do you get programmers to not immediately jump to recommending their personal favorites? What can motivate programmers to review their initial selection criteria and possibly modify their choice? Your thoughts?

• DopeWarz 2010

  A few (6?) weeks ago, I started a project that I've always wanted to do. I am doing a re-write of the old VB6 game DopeWars with a partner in crime. I loved that game and spent many, many hours wasting time playing it years ago. I liked it so much, I even registered it (it was $5...even then, that wasn't much to spend). The VB6 version itself was a port of the old DOS game DrugWars (never go to play that). I needed a game project to work on as it's been far too long since I've done any game work. There is surprising amount of logic built into the game (there is the way I'm writing it, anyway) with what is really a minimal interface. My design goal was to have an object model that could be easily adapted to any interface and so far, I've managed to do that. I am even considering a web-based version that could run via Facebook (no clue how to do that...yet). I've enlisted the help of one of my DBA buddies to work on the interface while I am working on the object model. So far, this arrangement has gone well. The logical separation of concerns allows for us to collaborate easily. Once we get to the Facebook step, it will be great to have a DBA "on staff" to help that part off of the ground. The object model is probably about 60% complete with quite a bit of testing to go. More on this as we go....
