• div stacking/layout with css or javascript

  so i have 4 divs (i actually have many more but this will simplify the question). i want to display them in two columns. the 4 divs vary in height. the number of actual divs in the end will vary. so if i have this <div id="1" style="height: 200px" class="inline">some content here</div> <div id="2" style="height: 600px" class="inline">some content here</div> <div id="3" style="height: 300px" class="inline">some content here</div> <div id="4" style="height: 200px" class="inline">some content here</div> with styling thus .inline { display: inline-block; vertical-align: top; width: 48%;} so #1 would go left and then #2 would shove up beside it to the right, great, but the #3 will not slide up the 400px to fit nicely below #1. (of course)... it goes on the left side but at 600px from the top clearing the bottom of #2. etc... how would i get the divs to slide up into the empty spaces, is it possible with css? jquery maybe? i know i could write column divs to mark it up, but since the number of divs constantly change and the heights vary according to content. It would be nice to just get rid of the space since we dont really care about the order. any thoughts?

• accessing pdf via https URL

  I send out a newsletter email containing URLs to a https website that then redirects to a pdf document. On first invocation of a URL the user is prompted with the typical https browser "security alert" popup, on selecting "Yes" the display of the PDF fails. The HTTP Header on the failed response is: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: ECS/HTTP-Server Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2010 15:57:26 GMT Content-type: application/pdf Content-language: en-US Set-cookie: JSESSIONID=0000r111cRz1Vc-PtCJg8Cdu4eR:-1; Path=/ Expires: Thu, 01 Dec 1994 16:00:00 GMT Cache-control: no-cache="set-cookie, set-cookie2" Connection: close Subsequent invocations of the URL successfully opens the PDF (at this point we have the session id cookie set by the initial failed request). • Screen capture of MDI app with OpenGL graphics using MFC

  In our MDI application - which is written in MFC - we have a function to save a screenshot of the MDI client area to file. We are currently doing a BitBlt from the screen into a bitmap, which is then saved. The problem is that some of the MDI child windows have their content rendered by OpenGL, and in the destination bitmap these areas show up as blank or garbled. I have considered some alternatives: - Extract the OpenGL content directly (using glReadPixels), and draw this to the relevant portions of the screen bitmap. - Simulate an ALT+PrtScr, since doing this manually seems to get the content just fine. This will trash the clipboard content, though. - Try working with the DWM. Appart from Vista and Win7, this also needs to work on Win2000 and XP, so this probably isn't the way to go. Any input will be appreciated!

• Location of my own directories

  Hello, I am trying to understand how to create my own directory tree and access it from my application. I am doing some kind of learning program and want to create a directory structure like this: -MyLessonsDirectory --LessonDirectory_1 ---Step_1 ---Step_2 ---Step_3 --LessonDirectory_2 ---Step_1 ---Step_2 ---Step_3 . . and so on In each "Step"-directory I will have specific content for that step of the lesson. The content is added by me while developing. Hence, I don't want to create the structure and content from within the application, just access it and reading the content of the directories. If I can create this kind of structure and use it it will be very easy to create a nice design that makes it easy to create new lessons in my app. What I cannot figure out is where I should create those directories in the file-structure in xCode and what is the path to those directories from my application. • javascript innerHTML without childNodes?

So how do I ensure that the Javascript for the partial view is at the bottom of the page? Especially in cases where the html layout needs to be at the top of the page?

• HTML5 <audio> Safari live broadcast vs not

  I'm attempting to embed an HTML5 audio element pointing to MP3 or OGG data served by a PHP file . When I view the page in Safari, the controls appear, but the UI says "Live Broadcast." When I click play, the audio starts as expected. Once it ends, however, I can't start it playing again by clicking play. Even using the JS API on the audio element and setting currentTime to 0 fails with an index error exception. I suspected the headers from the PHP script were the problem, particularly missing a content length. But that's not the case. The response headers include a proper Content- Length to indicate the audio has finite size. Furthermore, everything works as expected in Firefox 3.5+. I can click play on the audio element multiple times to hear the sound replay. If I remove the PHP script from the equation and serve up a static copy of the MP3 file, everything works fine in Safari. Does this mean Safari is treating audio src URLs with query parameters differently than URLs that don't have them? Anyone have any luck getting this to work? • CSS three column layout, liquid center, no left-margin!

  Hi, I am all in favor of CSS based layouts, but this one I just can't figure out. Again this is easy with the table. Delete the column and "Content" expands. Beautiful. I have looked through many examples (and "holy grails") of liquid and table less three-column CSS based layouts, but I have not found one which is not using some kind of margin-left for the middle column ("Content"). Any margin-left will suck once "Left" is gone as "Content" will just stay at it's place. I'm just about to switch to old school table based layout for this problem, so I'm hoping someone has some idea - I don't care about excess markup, wrappers and the like, I would just like to know how to solve this with plain CSS. Btw: look at how easy equal height columns are... Cheers PS: No CSS3 please

• Fluid Columns with matching height and background image

  I'm working on a new layout for my site that uses a header, footer and two column center region. The two columns consist of the main content area which is fluid height and width and a right sidebar which is fluid height and fixed width. I have done similar layouts before, but this one depends on using two different background images (one for the sidebar and one for the content area). Is there any way to implement this, using proper HTML & CSS, so that the background images of the two columns are always the same height, regardless of which columns content is longer? I've tried using JavaScript to simulate this, but it doesn't work so well if there are images in the content area. I would really prefer not to use this method any way. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have setup a staging environment at http://staging.jamesarmes.net/jimmyssandbox to provide an example. This environment is not my finished product, but I want to get the containers under control before I move any further

  Hy I am a uber nube to jquery my question is like this: if I have multiple toggle on same page and the div I`m toggleing must be desplayed in the same div. • Identify my terminal session that started a particular process

  I'm using Gnome on Ubuntu. I often have 8-20 terminal sessions open and in some of them I have su'd to a different user. The specific problem that caused me to write this query happens when using git status, but this is more general issue. git status will tell me I have an uncontrolled file .foo.java.swp. This means that in one of my terminal sessions I have vi open on foo.java. I need a script or tool that would tell me in which terminal session that vi is running. I can do a "ps aux | grep vi" to pretty easily find the pid of the particular vi. It would be nice if the tool highlighted the terminal on my task bar in some way. Thanks. -Sam

• Div on top of Div using z-index.

  I have the following divs in my HTML: <div class="main"> <div class="bgimage"></div> <div class="content">Text</div> which is directly inside my body. With the following CSS: .content{filter:alpha(opacity=50);-moz-opacity: 0.5;opacity: 0.5;} .content{position:relative;z-index:1;border:#000 thin solid;width:960px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;background-color:#000;} .bgimage{position:absolute;z-index:-1;width:1024px;height:768px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;background-image:url(bg1.jpg);} Basically, I have a Div that with a display of a background image, and I will have another Div on top of this with transparency. This current code works, but my problem is when I am trying to take the content div down from the top. When I add margin-top:100px, for example, is also brings the image down. I thought it would not touch it if it is not on the same z-index? Why does adding a margin also force the bgimage div down? I have also tried making the div with class of content a position of absolute and a zindex, but then this won't centre. How should I solve this?

• Downloading a file from a PHP page in C#

  Okay, we have a PHP script that creates an download link from a file and we want to download that file via C#. This works fine with progress etc but when the PHP page gives an error the program downloads the error page and saves it as the requested file. • Speakers, Please Check Your Time

  Woodrow Wilson was once asked how long it would take him to prepare for a 10 minute speech. He replied "Two weeks". He was then asked how long it would take for a 1 hour speech. "One week", he replied. 2 hour speech? "I'm ready right now," he replied.  Whether that is a true story or an urban legend, I don’t really know, but either way, it is a poignant reminder for all speakers, and particularly apropos this week leading up to the PASS Community Summit. (Cross-posted to the PASS Professional Development Virtual Chapter blog #PASSProfDev.) What’s the point of that story?  Simply this…if you have plenty of time to do your presentation, you don’t need to prepare much because it is easy to throw in more and more material to stretch out to your allotted time.  But if you are on a tight time constraint, then it will take significant preparation to distill your talk down to only the essential points. I have attended seven of the last eight North American Summit events, and every one of them has been fantastic.  The speakers are great, the material is timely and relevant, and the networking opportunities are awesome.  And every year, there is one little thing that just bugs me…speakers going over their allotted time.  Why does it bother me so?  Well, if you look at a typical schedule for a Summit, you’ll see that there are six or more sessions going on at the same time, and only 15 minutes to move from one to another.  If you’re trying to maximize your training dollar by attending something during every session time slot, and you don’t want to be the last guy trying to squeeze into the middle of the row, then those 15 minutes can be critical.  All the more so if you need to stop and use the bathroom or if you have to hike to the opposite end of the convention center.  It is really a bad position to find yourself having to choose between learning the last key points of Speaker A who is going over time, and getting over to Speaker B on time so you don’t miss her key opening remarks. And frankly, I think it is just rude.  Yes, the speakers are the function, after all they are bringing the content that the rest of us are paying to learn.  But it is also an honor to be given the opportunity to speak at a conference like this, and no one speaker is so important that the conference would be a disaster without him.  Speakers know when they submit their abstract, long before the conference, how much time they will have.  It has been the same pattern at the Summit for at least the last eight years.  Program Sessions are 75 minutes long.  Some speakers who have a good track record, and meet other qualifying criteria, are extended an invitation to present a Spotlight Session which is 90 minutes (a 20% increase).  So there really is no excuse.  It’s not like you were promised a 2-hour segment and then discovered when you got here that it was only 75 minutes.  In fact, it’s not like PASS advertised 90-minute sessions for everyone and then a select few were cut back to only 75.  As a speaker, you know well before you get here which type of session you are doing and how long it is, so as a professional, you should plan accordingly. Now you might think that this only happens to rookies, but I’ll tell you that some of the worst offenders are big-name veterans who draw huge attendance numbers for their sessions.  Some attendees blow this off as, “Hey, it’s so-and-so, and I’d stay here for hours and listen to him/her talk.”  To which I would reply, “Then they should have submitted for a pre- or post-conference day-long seminar instead, but don’t try to squeeze your day-long talk into a 90-minute session.”  Now I don’t really believe that these speakers are being malicious or just selfishly trying to extend their time in the spotlight.  I think that most of them are merely being undisciplined and did not trim their presentation sufficiently, or allowed themselves to get off-track (often in a generous attempt to help someone in the audience with a question or problem that really should have been noted for further discussion after the session). So here is my recommendation…my plea, even.  TRIM THE FAT!  Now.  Before it’s too late.  Before you even get on the airplane, take a long, hard look at your presentation and eliminate some of the points that you originally thought you had to make, but in reality are not truly crucial to your main topic.  Delete a few slides.  Test your demos and have them already scripted rather than typing them during your talk.  It is better to cut out too much and end up with plenty of time at the end for Questions & Answers.  And you can always keep some notes on the stuff that you cut out so that you could fill it back in at the end as bonus material if you really do end up with a whole bunch of time on your hands.  But I don’t think you will.  And if you do, that will look even better to the audience as it will look like you’re giving them something extra that not every audience gets.  And they will thank you for that.

• MOSS search crawl fails with "Access is denied ..."

  Recently the search crawler stopped working on my MOSS installation. The message in the crawl log is Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content. (The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it.) The default content account is an admin on the site collection that I am trying to crawl. Almost every result for this error on Google tells me to add the DisableLoobackCheck registry key with a value of 1. I have done this and rebooted and the error continues. The "Do not allow Basic Authentication" checkbox in my crawl rule screen is unchecked. Is there anything else that could be causing this error? Something with file system or database permissions maybe?
