• Reminder: True WCF Asynchronous Operation

  A true asynchronous service operation is not the one that returns void, but the one that is marked as IsOneWay=true using BeginX/EndX asynchronous operations (thanks Krzysztof). To support this sort of fire-and-forget invocation, Windows Communication Foundation offers one-way operations. After the client issues the call, Windows Communication Foundation generates a request message, but no correlated reply message will ever return to the client. As a result, one-way operations can't return values, and any exception thrown on the service side will not make its way to the client. One-way calls do not equate to asynchronous calls. When one-way calls reach the service, they may not be dispatched all at once and may be queued up on the service side to be dispatched one at a time, all according to the service configured concurrency mode behavior and session mode. How many messages (whether one-way or request-reply) the service is willing to queue up is a product of the configured channel and the reliability mode. If the number of queued messages has exceeded the queue's capacity, then the client will block, even when issuing a one-way call. However, once the call is queued, the client is unblocked and can continue executing while the service processes the operation in the background. This usually gives the appearance of asynchronous calls.

• Growing Into Enterprise Architecture

  I am writing this post as I am in an Enterprise Architecture class, specifically on the Oracle Enterprise Architecture Framework (OEAF).  I have been a long believer that SOA’s key strength is that it is the first IT approach that blends or unifies business and technology.  That is a common view and is certainly valid but is not completely true (or at least accurate).  As my personal view of EA is growing, I realize more than ever that doing EA is FAR MORE than creating a reference architecture, creating a physical architecture or picking a technology to standardize on.  Those are parts of the puzzle but not the whole puzzle by any stretch. I am now a firm believer that the various EA frameworks out there provide the rigor and structure required to allow the bridging of business strategy / vision to IT strategy / vision. The flow goes something like this: Business Strategy –> Business / Application / Information / Technology Architecture –> SOA Reference Architecture –> SOA Functional Architecture.  Governance is imbued throughout to help map, measure and verify the business-to-IT coherence. With those in place, then (and only then) can SOA fulfill it’s potential to be more that an integration strategy, more than a reuse strategy; but also a foundation for tying the results of IT to business vision. Fortunately, EA is a an ongoing process that it is never too late to get started with an understanding of frameworks such as TOGAF, FEA, or OEAF.  Also, EA is never ending in that it always needs to be apply, even once a full-blown Enterprise Architecture is established it needs to be constantly evolved.  For those who are getting deeper into EA as a discipline, there is plenty runway to grow as your company/customer begins to look more seriously at EA. • Visual Studio ALM MVP of the Year 2011

  For some reason this year some of my peers decided to vote for me as a contender for Visual Studio ALM MVP of the year. I am not sure what I did to deserve this, but a number of people have commented that I have a rather useful blog. I feel wholly unworthy to join the ranks of previous winners: Ed Blankenship (2010) Martin Woodward (2009) Thank you to everyone who voted regardless of who you voted for. If there was a prize for the best group of MVP’s then the Visual Studio ALM MVP would be a clear winner, as would the product group of product groups that is Visual Studio ALM Group. To use a phrase that I have learned since moving to Seattle and probably use too much: you guys are all just awesome. I have tried my best in the last year to document not only every problem that I have had with Team Foundation Server (TFS), but also to document as many of the things I am doing as possible. I have taken some of Adam Cogan’s rules to heart and when a customer asks me a question I always blog the answer and send them a link. This allows both my blog and my understanding of TFS to grow while creating a useful bank of content. The idea is that if one customer asks, all benefit. I try, when writing for my blog, to capture both the essence and the context for a problem being solved. This allows more people to benefit as they do not need to understand the specifics of an environment to gain value. I have a number of goals for this year that I think will help increase value in the community: persuade my new colleagues at Northwest Cadence to do more blogging (Steve, Jeff, Shad and Rennie) Rangers Project – TFS Iteration Automation with Willy-Peter Schaub, Bill Essary, Martin Hinshelwood, Mike Fourie, Jeff Bramwell and Brian Blackman Write a book on the Team Foundation Server API with Willy-Peter Schaub, Mike Fourie and Jeff Bramwell write more useful blog posts I do not think that these things are beyond the realms of do-ability, but we will see…

• Oracle Linux / Symantec Partnership

  Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers sang the now famous lyrics:  “You like to-may-toes and I like to-mah-toes”. In the tech world, is it Semantic or is it Symantec? Ah, well, we know it’s the latter. Actually, who doesn’t know or hasn’t heard of Symantec in the tech world? Symantec is thoroughly engrained in Enterprise customer infrastructure from their Storage Foundation Suite to their Anti-Virus products. It would be hard to find anyone who doesn’t use their software. Likewise, Oracle Linux is thoroughly engrained in Enterprise infrastructure – so our paths cross quite a bit. This is why the Oracle Linux  engineering team works with Symantec to make sure their applications and agents are supported on Oracle Linux. • Search Work Items for TFS 2010 - New Extension

  A few months ago I was constantly using Visual Studio 2008 with Team Foundation Server 2008. Searching for work items with queries inside Visual Studio became a pain until I found an add in that simplifed it into one little search box in the IDE.  It allowed me to enter some text in, hit the enter key, and it would bring back a list (aka open a .wiq file) of work items that matched the text entered. I became a huge fan of Noah Coad's Search Work Item Add In. He wrote a pretty good blog on how to use it as well. Of course when we upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010, the 2008 add in no longer worked. I didn't see any updates for it on codeplex to be 2010 compatible. Cory Cissell and I have published a few Visual Studio Extensions already so I figured I'd take a shot at making this tool 2010 compatible by turning it into an extension. Sure enough, it worked. We used it locally for a while and recently decided to publish it to the Visual Studio Gallery. If you are currently looking for an easy way to search work items in Visual Studio 2010, this is worth checking out. Big thanks goes out to Noah for originally creating this on codeplex. • Thoughts on web development architecture through integrating C++ in the future to a web application

  I'm looking to build a website (it's actually going to be a commercial startup) I saw this question and it really shed some light on a few things that I was hoping to understand (kudos to the op). After seeing that, it would make sense that, unless the website were required to actually have millions of hits per day, it wouldn't be a viable solution to write a C++ backend on the server side. But this got me thinking. what if it in the (unlikely) events of the future, it does go that route? The problem is that, while I'm thinking of starting this all using .Net (in the beginning) just to get something quick and easy up without a lot of hassle (in terms of learning), and then moving towards something more Open Source (such as Python/Django or RoR) later to save money and to support OSS, I'm wondering IFF the website actually becomes big, will it be a good idea to integrate a C++ backend, and use Python ontop of C++ for a strong foundation, and then mitigate HTML/CSS/AJAX/etc ontop of the backend's foundation? I guess, what I'd like to know is that, given the circumstance, if this were to happen, would it be a proper approach in terms of architecture? I'd definitely be supporting MVC as that seems to be a great way to implement a website. All in all, would one consider this rational, or are there other alternatives? I like .Net, and I'd like to use it in the beginning, because I have much more experience with that than, say, Python or PHP, and I prefer it in general, but I really do want to support OSS in the future. I suppose the sentence I'm looking for is, "is this pragmatic?"

• How to structure an application that combines WCF and WPF

  I'm in the process of learning how to use WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) to allow a client/server desktop application to communicate. The application's UI will be implemented using WPF, and we will probably use SQL Server for our database. What I'm struggling with, is understanding how to structure such an application. From what I've read, there are three components of a WCF application (which in the examples I've seen have existed as separate projects): A WCF service A WCF service host A WCF service client My question then, is - should these projects solely implement the functionality of sending/receiving data from the client/server? Would it make better sense this way? Would it make sense to create a separate WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) project to implement the UI for the application? And so, when I need to send/receive data from the client/server, I could simply invoke the operations provided in the WCF projects that I have created? For anyone who has built similar applications previously, perhaps you could explain what worked best for you in terms of structuring your application? For example, if I create a user registration page. When the user clicks the 'Register' button, the client application will need to send the data to the server. In this case, could I just invoke the methods provided in the WCF projects to send the data? Also, what data structures worked best for you when sending/receiving data? My initial thought is sending/receiving XML containing the data. Is this an option that is easy to implement? I realise that answers to this question may well be a matter of opinion - unless there are specific best practices that I'm not aware of. Thank you

• How to run installation CD for second monitor?

  I am running ubuntu 14 off of a live USB. I have a second monitor that I would like to use while using ubuntu. It has an installation cd that you have to install before using, and when I click on the .exe file the Archive Manager tries to open it and says an error occurred while loading the archive. Thanks for the help. Edit: additional information It just doesn't show up when when I'm in the display settings area. I press the locate(name is probably something else) monitor button too. I know it needs the CD because when I was using it with Windows it didn't work until I went through the installation process on the CD. If ubuntu doesn't use .exe files is there a way to use the CD still? • Site Web Analytics not updating Sharepoint 2010

  If you facing the issue that the web Analytics Reports in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration is not updating data. When you go to your site > site settings > Site Web Analytics reports or Site Collection Analytics reports  You get old data as in the ribbon displayed "Data Last Updated: 12/13/2010 2:00:20 AM" Please insure that the following things are covered: Insure that Usage and Data Health Data Collection service is configured correctly. Log Collection Schedule is configured correctly Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation Usage Data Import and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing Timer jobs are configured to run at regular intervals One last important Timer job is the Web Analytics Trigger Workflows Timer Job insure that this timer job is enabled and scheduled to run at regular intervals (for each site that you need analytics for). After you have insured that the web analytics service configuration is working fine and the Usage Data Import job is importing the *.usage files from the ULS LOGS folder into the WSS_Logging database, and that all the required timer jobs are running as expected… wait for a day for the report to get updated… the report gets updated automatically at 2:00 am in the morning… and i could not find a way to control the schedule for this report update job. So be sure to wait for a day before giving up :)

• Server 2008R2 in Extra Small Windows Azure Instance?

  Windows Azure hosting for an Extra Small (XS) Windows VM seems to come out to be about $10 a month right now. I think this XS instance gives you the equivalent of a 1 GHZ CPU with 768MB of RAM. I think the minimum requirements for Server 2008 is 1GHZ CPU with 512MB of RAM. Also, I think the minimum requirements for SQL Server Express is 1GHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM and that the minimum requirements for Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta is 2.2 GHZ CPU with 1 Gig of RAM (this 2.2 GHZ part could be a problem for my 1 GHZ XS VM...). Given the performance of the XS Azure instance, would I be able to install: a very basic MVC web site; a free instance of SQL Server Express; a free single user instance of Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta and run the XS VM instance without serious crashing? I know there are other Shared WebHost providers that can provide these features for me, but those hosting providers have the following disadvantages: They sometimes cost a lot of money after all of the "addons" are in place They probably don't provide the level of security and employee integrity that Microsoft can provide They don't provide the total control that an Azure VM seems to provide

• The year ahead, 2011.

  When I look back at last years look at 2010 my blogging rate has not changed much (I suspect this is largely down to using Twitter a lot) but my interests this year have developed a lot further. My view on 2010 would be that Microsoft would commit more to OSS, while I wanted to see more hires from that audience and more projects on Outercurve foundation instead there has been support for JQuery and Gems (aka NuGet). I would love to see more from Microsoft on the OSS front in 2011, Outercurve could become like the Apache foundation with enough support. Staying on the Microsoft front I predict that 2011 will bring the following. C# 5.0 will go RTM (still no MOP though) The next release of VS will go alpha or early beta MS MVC 4.0 (I think by Mix time) and maybe this release will get a command line. I also suspect that Microsoft will want to target the tablet market with WP7 in 2011 (Mix 2011 maybe...). I also predict the following Java will fork with Apache\Google. Oracle will then take them to court and the whole thing will boil right through 2011 (Java have had enough court cases, come on guys). Java and the JVM will sadly not move forward at all in 2011. Android will cause Apple a serious headache, both the smartphone and tablet market will see figures cut from Apple share. By the end of 2011 the current 70% apple market share will be 40-50%. As the features, performance and price of Android devices gets ever better Apple will be left out in the open. Lastly after 7 years I intend to move this blog away from weblogs. In 2011 I will be exploring Java, Ruby\Rails and Android and such subjects don't make sense to talk about it here. See you in 2011.

• USB device is recognized but has no address

  Good day folks, I'm trying to use a USRP1 with GNURadio if anyone knows what any of that is. I am running Ubuntu on a Windows 7 machine via VMware player. When I connect this USRP1 via USB 2.0 drive to Windows 7 it is recognized as Ettus Research LLC USRP1... When I connect the device to Ubuntu through VMware, it shows: usb device fffe:0002 on my removable devices. When I run lsusb I receive the following: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0e0f:0003 VMware, Inc. Virtual Mouse Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0e0f:0002 VMware, Inc. Virtual USB Hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID fffe:0002 When I run this program that comes with the USRP driver... uhd_find_devices I receive: -------------------------------------------------- -- UHD Device 0 -------------------------------------------------- Device Address: type: usrp1 name: serial: 00000000 So when I run this program, it does recognize the fact that this device is connected. However, the device has no address, no name, and has a null serial. I need to know the device address so I can run more programs in GNURadio. Does anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks!

• Bluetooth not working on Acer 3820tg (Ubuntu 12.04)

  After upgrading to 12.04 (it was done by a complete reinstallation), bluetooth doesn't work anymore. Before (I think it was Ubuntu 11.04), I just followed instructions on this page and copied /lib/firmware/ath3k-2.fw to /lib/firmware/ath3k-1.fw and everything was fine. But in 12.04, there isn't any ath3k-2.fw in the /lib directory, so this method is not possible. Also, pressing Fn+F3 doesn't work. I would appreciate any help.
