• Is Cygwin or Windows Command Prompt preferable for getting a consistent terminal experience for development?

  The question: Which is better, installing cygwin or one of its cousins on all my windows machines to have a consistent terminal experience across all my development machines, or becoming well trained in the skill of mentally switching from linux terminal to windows command prompt? Systems I use: OSX Lion on a Macbook Air Windows 8 on a desktop Windows 7 on the same desktop Fedora 16 on the same desktop What I'm trying to accomplish Configure an entirely consistent (or consistent enough) terminal experience across all my machines. "enough" in this context is clearly subjective. Please be clear in your answer why the configuration you suggest is consistent enough. One more thing to keep in mind: While I do write a lot of code intended to run on Windows (actually code that runs on Windows Phone which necessitates a windows machine), I also write a lot of Java code, and prefer to do so in vim. I test a local repo in Java on my windows machine, and push to another test machine running ubuntu later in the development stage. When I push to the ubuntu machine, I'm exclusively in terminal, since I'm accessing it via SSH. Summary, with more accurate question: Is there a good way to accomplish what I'm trying to do, or is it better to get accustomed to remembering different commands based on the system I'm on? Which (if either) is considered "best practice" by the development community? Alternatively, for a consistent development experience, would it be better to write all my code SSHed into another machine, and move things to windows for compile / build only when I needed to? That seems like too much work... but could be a solution. Update: While there are insightful responses below, I have yet to hear an answer that talks about why any given solution is superior. Cygwin/GnuWin32 is certainly a way to accomplish a similar experience on all platforms, but since I'm just learning all things command line, I don't want to set myself up to do a lot of relearning/unlearning in the future. Cygwin/GnuWin32 has its peculiarities I would imagine, and being aware of how that set up works on Windows is a learning curve. Additionally, using Cygwin/GnuWin32 robs me of learning the benefits of PowerShell. As a newcomer to working in a command line, which path should I choose to minimize having to relearn/unlearn things in the future? or as my first paragraph poses: [is it better to use Cygwin] ...or [become] well trained in the skill of mentally switching from linux terminal to windows command prompt?

• How do I get Gmail to start on my second desktop window?

  I've got the Compiz Place Windows plugin working for most of my apps, but I can't get Gmail to open on a specified desktop window/viewport. Under CompizConfig Settings Manager Place Windows Fixed Window Placement Windows with fixed viewport, I have class=Pidgin, x=2, y=1, and that works fine, but I can't get Gmail to place properly. I've tried class=Prism, title=Gmail, title=gmail ... The Gmail Prism config is from the prism-google-mail 1.0b3+svn20100210r62050-0ubuntu2 package. Any ideas?

  In 10.10 that I was using before 12.04 you could use alt+F9 to minimise a window to the task bar. In 12.04 meta+ctrl+ cursor up down maximises and unmaximises a window. If you have a numeric keypad you can use ctrl+alt+0 to minimise to launcher. On my netbook I don't have a numeric keypad and the normal numbers do not work with the above shortcut. How can I minimise windows with a keyboard shortcut?

• Why i disconnect every few seconds? using USB wireless adapter

  i know it's for ubuntu questions..but mint and ubuntu are very similiar and i had the same problem with linux ubuntu too..so i think this is the right place for my question anyway i don't have experience with drivers and other things,after installing Linux on my machine( i did dist-upgrade btw) everything seem to be great because i didn't have to install any driver, after a while i realized that my connection stop after few minutes(actually it shows that I'm connected but it's not) so i have to reconnect and after few minutes it disconnect again. I'm using Alfa USB wireless adapter AWS036H, and my Linux version is 11 i think the driver i'm using is Realtek i searched in the Internet and i found nothing. these are some outputs of few things • MVC Partial View to Call Display Pop-up window using jquery

  Hi I have a index page the renders objects from my database as a treeview, each item has a link href="/MessageGroupType/Edit/1002 that makes an Ajax call to display a partial view in a DIV. Within the partial view there is a delete button which calls my controller to delete the item. However, i do a check to make sure the item can be deleted, if the item cant be deleted then i wish a pop-up to appear back on the edit form telling the user they cant delete this record. In my Edit partial view i have the following code " type="text/javascript" $(function() { $("#dialog").dialog(); }); <% if (Boolean.Parse(ViewData["DisplayWindow"].ToString())){% This Mesage group Type Cannot be deleted as is linked to other message group Types <% }% So my main questions are Can i make a reference to a javascript script within my Partial View (i dont want my master page to be called on the partial view) When i dynamically load the partial view data into my DIV - can i then after calling my controller insert another DIV into the first DIV. • Having trouble running code analysis from command prompt with msbuild

  I'm using VS2010 RC while targeting .NET 3.5. I can run code analysis via Visual Studio without a problem. However, when I try to run code analysis on our CI server it isn't getting executed. When I attempt to build using msbuild 4.0 I get the following exception: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\CodeAnalysis\Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.targets(129,9): error MSB4018: The "CodeAnalysis" task failed unexpectedly. • Josh Smith's MVVM Demo App: Add commands to MainWindowViewModel's command list

  I have a question concerning Josh Smith's famous demo app on MVVM. I try building a "real" application around it to learn WPF. He creates this CommandsList in the MainWindowViewModel containing 2 Commands (create new and view all customers). This list is readonly (why? any particular reason?). I thougt it would be nice to add and remove some commands, depending on the workspace that is currently selected. Like edit or delete a customer when it has the focus and so on. How would I accomplish this?! Can I just make it a normal list and add commands? Or bind the Commands-View to a commands list of the selected workspace instead of the MainWindow? How? Any other ways? • Losing sessions with window.open and cakephp redirection in PHP with cakephp

  Hi guys, Ok, here goes a very strange problem... Our team is using cakephp to develop a large application. Everything session related is working properly so far. The only issues we've had so far are related to iframes and opening windows in other subdomains. I'll explain: User opens up site A and logs into it, creation a User in a session. Cookies are set, everything works as expected. The user clicks a link that opens up Site B via Javascript. When they go to that site, they are automatically logged in by a backend mechanism and infrastructure. Site B is a subdomain of Site A. On that site there is another mechanism to go back to the first page (a link rather) that logs them back in to site A. The fun part about this whole process is the following, and that on step 3, when we click on the link, the session on Site A has been lost. I know it's lost because it is forcing login again. I am a bit lost, as the rest of the application that work with AJAX and uses iframes and stuff works flawlessly, just this one item does not work as one would expect. • C# Dynamically created LinkButton Command Event Handler

  So I have a weird situation here... I have an System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.EditorPart class. It renders a "Search" button, when you click this button, it's clickHandler method does a DB search, and dynamically creates a LinkButton for each row it returns, sets the CommandName and CommandArgument properties and adds a CommandEventHandler method, then adds the LinkButton control to the page. The problem is, when you click a LinkButton, its CommandEventHandler method is never called, it looks like the page just posts back to where it was before the ORIGINAL "Search" button was pressed. I have seen postings saying that you need to add the event handlers in OnLoad() or some other early method, but my LinkButtons haven't even been created until the user tells us what to search for and hits the "Search" button... Any ideas on how to deal with this? Thanks!

  I've spent a good while getting my AVR development system set up with the full GCC tool chain (everything is the most recent current stable version) and I have solved most issues with it but one. This following code gives me an error which I just don't get. The AVR assembly manual states that the sbi instruction can accept 0-7 as a constant expression but it still errors out on me.   How do I force cpptask to move the static libraries to the end on arg list issued to the compiler? By manually moving them to the end of the argument list, the application compiles without error. gcc -ggdb -Wl,-export-dynamic -Wshadow -Wno-format-y2k x.cpp ... ../../lib/libboost_date_time.a ../../lib/libboost_thread.a And yes I have tried changing the order in the xml, and that of course didn't work. For now I am using an exec task to call gcc with the files in the correct order but this of course is a hack.

  Hi, I've written a powershell script which removes folders more than 7 days old. It seems to be removing the folders, but for some reason its giving me errors. I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me why?   I am getting the above error message randomly (so far as I can tell) on iPhone projects. Occasionally it will go away upon either: Clean Restart XCode Reboot Reinstall XCode But sometimes it won't. When it won't the only solution I have found is to take all the source material, import it into a new project, and then redo all the connections in IB. Then I'm good until it strikes again. Anybody have any suggestions? [update 20091030] I have tried building both debug and release versions, both full and lite versions. I've also tried switching the debug symbols from DWARF with external dSYM file to DWARF and to stabs. Clean builds in all formats make no differences. Permission repairs change nothing. Setting up a new user has no effect. Same error on the builds. Thanks for the suggestions! [Update 20091031] Here's an easier and (apparently) reliable workaround. It hinges upon the discovery that the problem is linked to a target not a project In the same project file, create a new target Option-Drag (copy) all the files from the BAD target 'Copy Bundle Resources' folder to the NEW target 'Copy Bundle Resources' folder Repeat (2) with 'Compile Sources' and 'Link Binary With Libraries' Duplicate the Info.plist file for the BAD target and name it correctly for the NEW target. Build the NEW target! [Update 20100222] Apparently an IDE bug, now apparently fixed, although Apple does not allow direct access to the original bug of a duplicate. I can no longer reproduce this behaviour, so hopefully it is dead, dead, dead.
