  I'm trying to design a database to record game histories for a game I'm working on. I have 3 different tables: users, gamehistories, and gamescores. Columns for tables: users: uid, displayname, email gamehistories: gid, pubID, start (datetime), end (datetime) gamescores: gid, uid, score I am trying to produce the following result set given a userID (uid): Opponent's displayname, my score, opponent's score, duration Any ideas? Is my design ok? How can I query these tables to get game histories for a given uid?

• Resources to learn sh scripting 'just like a normal programming language'

  Hi, what is the best resource (book would be nice) to learn sh scripting (the "standard" shell on Unix systems) just like when i would learn a "normal" programming/scripting language ? There are lots of tutorials on certain aspects of shell scripting, they mostly deal with shells in general and unix commands and so on, but i would rather like to find a more general approach - meaning a quick syntactic overview and an outlook on how to do things you normally do when programming, like implementing small algorithms and so on. Doing actual scripting, not just a structured batch file. And rather 100-liners than 1-to-3-liners. Can you recommend a good standard book on the topic ?

  How do you enable actions like Goto line number Find(/Replace) There don't appear to be default triggers for these actions. There are a bunch of methods on the control, but I'm missing the first step of how to get the 'events' that would trigger these. For instance, how does one hook ctrl+f or F3/Alt+F3 in the control and make them do a find? Should I be looking at each key using EVT_STC_KEY? Would also like any examples of using this control with Custom language definition (say something similar to C++, but not C++) Auto completion (basic keywords to start, or including variables)

• Git & Web-design: handling multiple customized templates

  I'm developing a CMS (with Django, but that doesn't matter) and have chosen GIT. Installations will vary in: Configs Database contents Media Templates First 3 are not a problem with git: we simply don't need these :) While developing, I have 1 default template with related media. Later, each customer will receive his own design based on default templates (some slight customization). I'm not going to support each of the custom templates as I introduce new features. Modularity helps with this but is not a 100% solution. Do you have any experience to share?

• 'schema' design for a social network

  I'm working on a proof of concept app for a twitter style social network with about 500k users. I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo. Are there any recommended practices for such situations? thanks Alan

• How do I design the file storage issue?

  I am working on an application that creates video files and stores them in a folder in the C:\ drive. I speculate that there will be a large number of these files in the future and we would run out of disk space at some point of time (on our VPS). When the time comes that we have to upgrade, we either plan to use one of the Cloud providers to store files or our existing provider can add another disk (say D:\ drive). Either way, I would want to design the app now in a way that in future, moving to different locations would not be an issue and would be transparent to the end user. The code that creates these files supports 2 ways: myObj.SetOutputToDisk(<path to store>); or myObj.SetOutputToMemoryStream(ms); If we go with the Cloud architecture, I assume we might have the following combination: Cloud Files + Existing VPS or Cloud Files + Cloud Windows Server Given the unknowns at this time, how would I go about designing this?

  Hopefully some Custom Control Designers/Builders can help I'm attempting to build my first custom control that is essential a client detail collection form. There are to be a series of elements to this form that require various styles applied to them. Ideally I'd like the VS 2005/2008 properties interface to be able to apply the CSSClass as it does at the control level, i.e. with a dropdown list of available CSS Clases. Take for example the Class to be applied to the legend tag /// <summary>Css Class for Legend</summary> [Category("Appearance")] [Browsable(true)] [DefaultValue("")] //I am at a loss as to what goes in [Editor] [Editor(System.Web.UI.CssStyleCollection), typeof(System.Drawing.Design.UITypeEditor))] public string LegendCSSClass { get { return _LegendCSSClass; } set { _LegendCSSClass = value; } } I have tried a couple of options, as you can see from above, without much luck. • Language in a Sandbox in Rails

  I've found that there WAS a sandbox gem (created by the guys that made try ruby in your browser but it was compatible only with Ruby 1.8. Another problem is that I cannot find it anymore (it seems they stop serving the gem from the servers...). So, is there any secure way of running ruby in a sandbox (so you can run it from your browser)? Or an easy way to run (for example lua/python) in a sandbox (no filesystem access, no creation of objects etc) and be called from Ruby (Rails 2.2)? I want to make an application like try_ruby even without having a ruby underneath. But it has to be an easy language (I saw there was a prolog in ruby, even a lisp but I don't think they are easy to learn languages...). So, do you have any suggestions or tips? Or should I just start creating my own DSL in Ruby (if there is a solution in creating a somewhat safe system)? Thx

• EJB 3 Session Bean Design for Simple CRUD

  I am writing an application that's sole purpose in life is to do CRUD operations for maintaining records in database. There are relationships between some of the tables/entities. Most examples I've seen for creating session beans deals with complex business logic/operations that interact with many entities which I don't have. Since my application is so very basic, what would be the best design for the session bean(s)? I was thinking of having one session bean per entity which had CRUD the methods defined. Then I thought of combining all of those session beans into a single session bean. And then I found this blog entry which is intriguing, but I must admit I don't understand all of it (what is a ServiceFacade?). I'm leaning towards session bean/entity class, but would like to hear more experienced opinions. Thanks.

• ASP.net Error in Design Mode

  I just switched to VS 2010, and upgraded a previous project. I'm getting the following error on a page in design mode for 2 controls: Error Creating Control - ObjectName Object reference not set to an instance of an object. One of them is a simple label, and the other is a ajax update panel. Other pages look fine. When I build and test the app, the page renders fine in the browser and functions fine - the label functions as expected and the content in the update panel works as expected. Any ideas why I'm getting this error? I tried some of the google results to no avail. It'd be great to get this out of the way. Thanks!

High level requirements are Work on Windows and UNIX networks it has to be extremly performant it has to be 100% accuarate (massively) scalable and fun to write The sort of details I am after is manufacturer and versions of all major workstation hardware components such as motherboard, network card, sound card, hard drives, optical drives, memory, BIOS details, operating system information etc. I dont want to have to distribute a client on each workstation to collect the information although i will require automatic worksattion discovery I would value your thoughts on the best development language to employ I know there are products such as NEWT and stuff like nmap...   I have read a few articles mentioning converters from one language to another. I'm a bit more than skeptical about the use of such kind of tools. Does anyone know or have experiences let's say about Visual Basic to Java or vs converters? Just one example to pick http://www.tvobjects.com/products/products.html, claims to be the "world leader" or so in that aspect, However if read this: http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/active-grid.html There the author states: "The consensus of MySQL users is that automated conversion tools for MS Access do not work. For example, tools that translate existing Access applications to Java often result in 80% complete solutions where finishing the last 20% of the work takes longer than starting from scratch." Well we know we need 80% of the time to implement the first 80% functionality and another 80% of the time for the other 20 %.... So has anyone tried such tools and found them to be worthwhile?

  My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

• Working with images in asp.net MVC ViewMasterPage in design mode

  While designing a master page i am adding a number of images to it. I have an image tag inside the master page, <img src="../../Content/Images/img19.jpg" class="profileImage" /> When i run my app, the image doesn't show up in the browser because the src path in the page that browser gets is same as in the master page. ie. "../../Content/Images/img19.jpg" But it should have been "Content/Images/img19.jpg" If i correct the src path in master page as <img src="Content/Images/img19.jpg" class="profileImage" /> Then I can see the image in the browser but not in design mode. Any help is appreciated.

• Ooutsourcing design/programming (taxes!)

  Hello, I have a full time job, but I also have some ideas in mind -- and I want to outsource some code development and design to Russia. I have friends there who help me to do that -- they'll do the development, provide me invoice (which is just description of our terms, because we decided on flat rate monthly fee), and I need to wire them money. So, I do not have business entity. If I'll pay them, am I am required to pay taxes? Or do I deduct my business expenses (say $30K/year) from my earnings (say $50K/year), and pay taxes only on what's left ($20K to be precise)? Any rules on that? Am I limited with something here? I'm getting that written specifications drive the tests in BDD, but also that business logic can be encapsulated using the specification pattern for re-use in domain objects and repositories, etc. Are these basically the same concept just used in different ways, used in conjunction together, or am I completely confusing the concepts?   Hey all, I'm looking for some ANTLR examples, I tried googling a bit but I found certain things which didn't fit my requirments. I found the Mantra project, but it's statically typed and is 'too' big for me at this moment, then I found 'pie' as interpreter, which is dynamically typed, which what I want, but it uses a syntax-directed interpreter. I'm looking for a pretty small language which is dynamically typed and uses AST's if possible. It doesn't need to be advanced, if it would have classes I would already be very happy. • Model-Controller cyclic reference/design problem

  I have a CoreData entity X, and controllers for this entity, XController. Now there's another entity, XGroup, containing a collection of X entities, and a XGroupController. Now the problem is that XGroupController needs to interact with XController, and it would be nice to just pass XGroupController a XGroup to observe, and then get the XControllers from the X entities. So the question is: is it a good idea to store a (weak, to avoid retain cycles) reference to a controller in an entity? It just feels a bit "wrong". Is there another design pattern for this?

  I'm facing a problem which is probably extremely common in game-design. Let's assume that we've got a 2D world The world's size is M x N rect The world may contain some items in it The items have (x,y) coords The world can be browsed via a window that is physically (m x n) large. The browser window can be zoomed in / out The browser window can be panned up/down + left right, while in the extents of the world's rect. How should I go about implementing this? I'm especially concerned about the browser window. Can anyone recommend any good reads ? This is not a homework - it's more of a task which I've set myself to complete.

• design time usercontrols - I can't see anything!

  newbie question, please forgive... I'm developing a Wpf UserControl that will eventually be bound to a business object. The usercontrol is little more than a series of laid out TextBlocks, and perhaps (later) an image or two. As I'm laying out the usercontrol, I can put dummy text into all the TextBlocks so I can see what the usercontrol will look like, but as soon as I change the text property to contain the Binding information: <TextBlock Margin="0,12.8,42,0" Name="lblLastName" FontSize="8" Height="19" VerticalAlignment="Top" Text="{Binding Mode=OneWay, Path=LastName}"/> Then I can no longer see the textbox, or any "placeholder" text. This makes it very difficult to adjust the location and sizes of all the controls on the UserControl. In WinFormas programming, you could set binding information independently of the Text property, so you could at least see the Placeholder text during design time development. It's going to be pretty hard to visually arrange a bunch of invisible TextBlocks! What's the standard solution for this?

  hello.i am so new to networking i want to design a large scale network for an organization with HQ and two branches. i want to use class A address for that.my questions are: if i am using the network address 30.0.0.0 for the whole organization how can it be different from another organization company or whatever which is using the same address in another country? now i have the three locations for this organization,so i need 5 subnets [one for the HQ,two for branch A and branch B , one for connecting A to HQ and one for connecting branch B with HQ since i will use central DHCP server at the HQ,is that(number of subnetting) right? is it advisable to use class A or class B for this organization it term of address that will be wasted (lets say it is a university with two branches in two different states)?! that is all your help is highly appropriated.
