• How do I consume a COM+ local server from C#?

  I have a web application from a company that has gone out of business. We're looking to extend the web app a bit with some asp.net functionality. The web app was written as an ISAPI application in Delphi, and uses COM+ to talk to the SQL Server and handles things like session management and authentication. So, in order to get the current user and other details, I have to use the undocument COM+ components. I was able to dig out the type library and auto generated IDL, but at this point i'm lost in creating a .NET proxy class for this. Is there a way to autogenerate the .net COM+ proxy either from the .dll itself (extracting the typelib info) or from the IDL? Note: These seem to be simple COM style objects hosted in COM+ servers, no subscriptions or transaction monitoring..

  Sometimes, I came across certain web development framework which doesn't provide authentication feature as in Authenication ASP.NET I was wondering what is the security measure needs to be considered, when implementing "Remember Me" login feature, by hand coding? Here are the things I usually did. 1) Store the user name in cookie. The user name are not encrypted. 2) Store a secret key in cookie. The secret key is generated using one way function based on user name. • How do I identify an OpenID provider as requiring Directed Identity?

  I am trying to extend the LightOpenID PHP library to "discover" that an identity provider requires Directed Identity. This should be easy as the library is beautifully well written and wonderfully clean but I don't know how to identify these types of providers. A couple things I've tried: I looked through the OpenID specs on the subject but came up empty handed. Looked through the PHP OpenID library but couldn't figure out how this info was gathered during the discovery. Dumped all the data (headers and content) that came from the servers by injecting some code in LightOpenID but didn't see anything helpful. Searched Google and Stackoverflow, naturally. How do providers identify themselves as requiring "Directed Identity" authentication? Surely there is a carefully defined specification for this... somewhere. Anyone know where I can find more on this?

• SQL Server 2008 - cannot register default instance MSSQLSERVER

  Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2008 Developer on Windows 7 64 bit. In Management Studio I cannot register the default instance MSSQLSERVER, it cannot find it although the service is running. I get the message: Cannot connect to PHOENIX\MSSQLSERVER. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 87) However Management Studio does show the SQL Server 2005 Express instance (that was installed with VS 2008 Pro) which appeared as already registered. I an using Windows Authentication as I installed it in mixed mode. Any ideas would be appreciated, many thanks paul

• How to implement a good system for login/out into a webapp

  I am one of the developers at PassPad, a secure password generator and username storage system. We're still working on it, but I have a few questions on the best way to implement a secure login/out system. Right now, what we plan on doing is to have the login system save a cookie with the username and a session key, and that's all that serves as authentication. The server verifies the two to match. Upon login/out a new key is created. This is a security-related webapp and while we don't actually store any information that might make the user queasy, because it is security-oriented it makes it a necessity for us to at least appear secure in a way that the user would be happy with. Is there a better way to implement a login/out system in PHP? Preferably it won't take too much coding time or server resources. Is there anything else I need to implement, like brute-force protection, etc? How would I go about that?

• Cookie: ASP.NET SessionId Issue

  I have a load generator that appends a ASP.NET_SessionId to the Cookie when making a Soap test call from Machine A to Machine B. Cookie: ASP.NET_SessionId=gf0ouay24sdneiuicpiggn45; However, when I'm running the soap test hitting my local server it doesn't have an ASP.NET_Session variable in the cookie. Why is this happening? UPDATE: I'm getting this issue now on the server: Forms authentication failed for the request. Reason: The ticket supplied was invalid. I've been using django-registration for user registration so far but I would really like to allow users to login to my site using their Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc accounts. I am using addthis sharing buttons. I just noticed they introduced a social sign in solution. The idea seems great, you integrate your authentication system with their service once, and your users can login via all of the popular social networking sites. Has anybody integrated addthis social signin plugin with a django website? How can you use it along side django-registration? Are there any similar, alternative solutions?

  We are considering to develop a Flash front-end to a web application written using Django. The Flash front-end will send a simple "id" to the server and in response receive a couple of objects. The application will be open only to authenticated users. To the extend of my current knowledge (which is basic for Flash) we can either use AMF or take an XML or JSON approach. AMF seems to have an upperhand as there are examples out on the internet showing it can cooperate easily with Django's authentication mechanism (most examples feature pyAMF). On the other hand, implementing a XML/JSON based solution may be easier and hassle free. Guidance will be much appreciated.

• How to make .NET WebForm Routing work with Authorization

  I have routes that are being registered from the database into an asp.net website (non MVC). The routes register fine, they all work when I am logged in. What I am trying to do is create a landing page based on some route data: Page is [site]/landing/dell The route looks like: "landing/{client}" and it routes to my page Login.aspx, in there I get the client out of the route, then display some custom brand data based on the value. In my web.config, I have my authentication mode set to forms, with my loginUrl = "Login.aspx" When the user does not have the authorization cookie, it redirects the user to: [site]/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2flanding%2fdell instead of keeping the route url, and displaying the correct data. The IIS server actually does not even process the route at all, just sends the user to the Login.aspx page. I have tried several additions to my web.config: etc, and many variations, but nothing seems to work. Ideas anyone? I assume this is a common issue, and it is just not well documented.

  I have a directory ("files") where sub-directories and files are going to be created and stored over time. The directories also need to deliver a directory listing, using "options indexes", but only if a user is authenticated, and authorized. I have that part built, and working, by doing the following: <Directory /var/www/html/files> Options Indexes IndexOptions FancyIndexing SuppressHTMLPreamble HeaderName /includes/autoindex/auth.php </Directory> Now I need to take care of file delivery. To force authentication for files, I have built the following: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} -f RewriteRule /files/(.*) /auth.php I also tried: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !-d RewriteRule /files/(.*) /auth.php Both directives are redirecting to auth.php when I request: foo.com/files/bar/ foo.com/files/bar/baz I am outputting the SERVER global on auth.php during testing and it is showing the requests as I made them (I thought Apache may have been doing something behind the scenes by adding something like "index.html" to the end with "Options Indexes" being on). Ideas?

• Saving highscores coupled to a facebook account

  I want to offer a "highscore" list for friends in my app (at this point iPhone/iPad), so that if the user connected to facebook, he will get a list with his/her friends scores. Connecting is easy, retrieving friends is easy, but figuring out the best way to store the scores is not. As it seems I need to the store the scores on my own server server, no big deal. But what is considered a reasonable safe way to transfer the data? When communicating with facebook, authentication is clear - but communicating with my server basically anyone could post scores for another user if I send user id and score. Obfuscation might help a bit, but is there any better way to make sure that the data comes from the fb-logged-in person? Scores can also go down, so changing scores for other persons won't necessary help them. Thanks :)

• Login time out when calling opening a new window from modal popup (ASP.NET)

  I have a weird problem. I have a window, on a button click I open a modal popup (using ModelPopupExtender), that let's you select a few criteria and then click a submit button. On click of submit button, I open a new window (using window.open()) that shows the status of what happened to your submitted request. However, every time this status window is opened, it goes to the login page. I am thinking the modal popup can't pass the authentication cookie to the newly opened window, but I'm not sure. • How do i get out of the habit of procedural programming and into object oriented programming?

  Hiya all, I'm hoping to get some tips to kinda help me break out of what i consider after all these years a bad habit of procedural programming. Every time i attempt to do a project in OOP i end up eventually reverting to procedural. I guess i'm not completely convinced with OOP (even though i think i've heard everything good about it!). So i guess any good practical examples of common programming tasks that i often carry out such as user authentication/management, data parsing, CMS/Blogging/eComs are the kinda of things i do often, yet i haven't been able to get my head around how to do them in OOP and away from procedural, especially as the systems i build tend to work and work well. One thing i can see as a downfall to my development, is that i do reuse my code often, and it often needs more rewrites and improvement, but i sometimes consider this as a natural evolution of my software development. Yet i want to change! to my fellow programmers, help :) any tips on how i can break out of this nasty habbit?

  i'm trying to define a way to send emails using gmail. it all works fine on localhost but when i deploy to heroku nothing happens. i guess it has something to do with GoDaddy MX records? here is what i tried: ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :address => "smtp.gmail.com", :port => 587, :domain => "gmail.com", :user_name => "my_user", :password => "my_pass", :authentication => "plain", :enable_starttls_auto => true } i can't change the GoDaddy MX records since i'm forwording some emails from there to my Gmail account. am i missing something? EDIT- it turns out the problem was with my Gmail account. all i needed to turn off the 2-step verification. Problem solved.

  My application supports twitter and needs to open browser for OAuth. When the user clicks the Share on Twitter button, the main activity will create another subactivity (TwitterActivity) to handle twitter authentication issues. Here is a flow graph showing how activities are invoked currently. Main is short for MainActivity and Twit for TwitterActivity. startActivity() OAuth intent OAuth callback finish() Main ---------------> Twit ------------> Browser --------------> Twit --------> Browser As you may notice, after the TwitterActivity calls finish() to stop, it will now return back to MainActivity, but Browser instead.   I am having a frustrating time trying to do something with Perl that would take a couple of lines of code in C#, namely to call a web service on a Windows server that requires Integrated Windows Authentication. The most likely candidate I've found for success is a module called LWP::Authen::Ntlm, but all the examples I've googled require you to explicitly supply username, password and domain. I don't want to do that - I just want the request to use the credentials of the currently logged in user, a la CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials in .NET. Have any of you Perl gurus out there ever had to do this? Thanks.

  Hi all, I have a task list, with ability to assign users. So i have foreignkey to User model in the database. However, the default display is username in the dropdown menu, i would like to display full name (first last) instead of the username. If the foreignkey is pointing to one of my own classes, i can just change the str function in the model, but User is a django authentication model, so i can't easily change it directly right? Anyone have any idea how to accomplish this? Thanks a lot!

• 405: Method Not Allowed WCF

  I can perfectly call a WCF web method from localhost. I published to this server: http://luiscarlosch.com/WebFormClean.aspx (only firefox or chrome) with the Visual Studio publishing tool and it works fine. The problem is when a try to access it from another computer. I get the 405: Method Not Allowed. But It doest make sense because It works fine when i access it remotely from the publisher computer as I said. Any idea? • Uploading videos to Twitter using OAuth

  Hi, I am developing an iPhone app that uses Twitvid library for uploading videos to TwitVid. This library first authenticates the app using the user-name and password input parameters. Then it uploads the video. But, recently I switched to OAuth mechanism of authentication which leads to a web-page where user can enter the user-name and password.
