• Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

  Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity. For the Compensation pattern, we would like to address the following questions: Why is compensation important in relation to SOA? • PeopleSoft 8.52 iPad Certification

  One of the real gems in the PeopleTools 8.52 release is the certification of PeopleSoft applications running in the Safari Browser on an iPad.  It is nice that PeopleSoft is not constrained by technology like Adobe Flex/Flash, so announcements like this "Adobe drops plans for mobile Flash support" do not limit our mobile solution to custom mobile development. There are parts of PeopleSoft applications that operate better on iPads than others.  One of the best is Workcenters.  Workcenters were new to PeopleTools 8.51 and we are starting to see more and more adoption of them.  Workcenters are roll based landing pages that eliminate difficult navigation by providing access to most links, pages, and reports a user in a role needs.  One of the nicest I’ve seen is the Supply Manager Workspace.  Here are some links to screenshots of what a WorkCenter looks like on an iPad: Here's the standard PeopleSoft Login Page The Supply Manager Workspace looks great full screen on an iPad iPad has a great user interface to zoom, here's a screenshot of an upclose view of an analytic. Touch one of the analytics and it drills into the details. Go ahead and give it a try.  WorkCenters and Dashboards are starting to show up across applications.  For a quick one to try, navigate to the PeopleTools->Integration Broker->Integration Network WorkCenter.  It’s new in PeopleTools 8.52.

• How do I get OBDII software working?

  I have an ODBII USB cable for vehicle diagnostics, unfortunately I haven't been able to get it working on Ubuntu 12.04. The closest I've come is using the VAG-COM software with wine, using the ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 trick and running stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 speed 9600 repeatedly. It will connect and show the vehicle is OBDII, but none of the useful features seem to be working. I tried: Scantool - says it's connecting to the /dev/device in terminal, but doesn't. obdgpslogger - times out all the time. pyobd - This seems to be the most up-to-date source I could find, I had to adjust the code a bit to work (see here for changes). Still, in obd_io.py interpret_result function, it says it's looking for 4 space separated numbers, where the usb-serial is receiving bogus code "0100" instead? The device shows up in lsusb as: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC Is the problem that these native tools don't expect a USB serial, or a serial of this type? Or are these apps too old to recognize OBD2 of this vehicle?

• Which one is better offline method for large scale application

  We've a big data management website used by several property. Some of our customers have downtime (they can't access net for an hour or two). We want our site to support offline data viewing and inventory management (typical data search and add/remove) and when the user goes online we can sync the changes back to our central database. Customers use several platforms like Windows, iOS, etc. We've been looking into several different options, here are the major choices - Develop offline web app supported in HTML5. Develop a 'fallback' mechanism and interact with data from the app cache as explained in here (http://www.htmlgoodies.com/html5/tutorials/introduction-to-offline-web- applications-using-) Develop a desktop based cross platform solution. I remember the old MONO which has been popular. Here's a post (What do you suggest for cross platform apps, including web cross-platform-apps-including-web) and another one (Technology choice for cross platform development (desktop and phone)? platform-development-desktop-and-phone?rq=1) I realize the the desktop solution might be hard to maintain and result in some compatibility issues and demand test environments. Can HTML5 handle moderate to high level complexity and data flow? Or would it be better to rely on a desktop based app for better scalability & performance?

  Ill be speaking at the International Legal Technology Associations SharePoint for Legal Symposium on June 16th 2010 at Microsofts offices in Downers Grove, IL.  My talk will be about Building Public-Facing Websites with SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint has quickly become a popular platform for companies to build their public-facing websites on.  Ill go over the new features in SharePoint 2010 specific to web content management, and also discuss some best practices and lessons learned from our experience building internet sites with SharePoint. • Did Oracle make public any plans to charge for JDK in the near future? [closed]

  I recently read an article: Twelve Disaster Scenarios Which Could Damage the Technology Industry which mentioned among other the possible "disaster scenarios" also: Oracle starts charging for the JDK, giving the following as argument: Oracle could start requiring license fees for the JDK from everyone but desktop users who haven't uninstalled the Java plug-in for some reason. This would burn down half the Java server-side market, but allow Oracle to fully monetize its acquisitions and investments. [...] Oracle tends to destroy markets to create products it can fully monetize. Even if you're not a Java developer, this would have a ripple effect throughout the market. [...] I actually haven't figured out why Larry hasn't decided Java should go this route yet. Some version of this scenario is actually in my company's statement of risks. I know guessing for the future is impossible, and speculating about that would be endless so I will try to frame my question in an objective answarable way: Did Oracle or someone from Oracle under anonymity, make public, or hinted, leaked to the public such a possibility or the above is plain journalistic speculation? I am unable to find the answer myself with Google generating a lot of noise by searching JDK.

• How to pick a great working team?

  I've just finished my master and I'm starting to dig into the laboral world, i.e. learning how programming teams and technology companies work in the real world. I'm starting to design the idea of my own service or product based on free software, and I will require a well coupled, enthusiast and fluid team to build and the idea. My problem is that I'm not sure which would be the best skills to ask for a programming team of 4-5 members. I have many friends and acquaintances, with whom I've worked during my studies. Must of those ones I have in mind are very capable and smart people, with a good logic and programming base, although some of them have some characteristics that I believe that could influtiate negatively in the group: lack of communication, fear to debate ideas, hard to give when debating, lack of structured programming (testing, good commenting, previous design and analysis). Some of them have this negative characteristics, but must of them have a lot of enthusiasm, nice working skills (from an individual point of view), and ability to see the whole picture. The question is: how to pick the best team for a large scale project, with a lot of programming? Which of these negative skills do you think are just too influential? Which can be softened with good leadership? Wich good skills are to be expected? And any other opinion about social and programming skills of a programming team.

  i have opened this thread because i upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 beta (kernel 3.5) and i have problem with vmware workstation 9: "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to" does anyone got the same problem? Clean install of ubuntu 12.10 (daily build) installed vmware 9 and patched but not working, my laptop is a Lenovo T420 with Nvidia Optimus Technology. i can't patch correctly and get the thinks be builded correctly, my configuration is ubuntu 12.10 fresh installation vmware workstation 9 fresh install on top of a lenovo thikpad t420 with nvidia optimus video card. have a problems.. this message is show whem i try to apply the patch.. # Stopping VMware services: VMware Authentication Daemon done At least one instance of VMware VMX is still running. • how to choose a web framework and javascript library?

  I've been procrastinating learning some framework for web apps w/ some library for AJAX, something like django with prototype, or turbogears with mootools, or zeta components with dojo, grok, jquery, symfony... The point is to spend some of my spare time, have "fun" and create cool stuff that hopefully is some useful. I think maybe I wouldn't like something like GWT or pyjamas because I wouldn't like to "get married" with some technology, I want to keep my freedom to add another javascript library, and so on. I didn't decide even the language yet, but I think I'd prefer python. PHP could be fine if there is some framework that is nice enough. Besides that, I don't even know where to start. I don't feel like learning a framework to then realize there is something that I cannot comfortably do, switch to another framework then find that a third framework has something really cool, etc. And the same goes for javascript libraries. So, some guidance would be really appreciated. I don't really know why are so many options available and what do they aim for, I guess some of them focus on some aspects and some on others, but I just want to make cool and nice apps that I can easily maintain, without spending too much time on coding or learning and avoiding the "trapped in the framework" feeling, when doing something is awfully complicated (or even impossible) with compared with the rest of things or doing that same thing on a different framework. I guess in the end I'll go for django and jquery since they are the most widely used options, afaik, but if I was going for the most widely used options I guess I should choose Java or PHP (I don't really like Java for my spare time, but php is not so bad), so I preferred to ask first. I think the question has to consider both, framework and library, since sometimes they are coupled. I think this is the place to ask this kind of things, sorry if not, and thank you.

• Heading to GTC 2010

  Next week the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2010 takes place in San Jose, CA and I am lucky enough to be attending the entire week. It has been an extremely long time (in fact, I can't remember the last time) where I am registered as an attendee at a conference (full pass/access) without being a speaker *and* without having any booth duty! Having said that, we (our team at Microsoft) will be running GPU debugging UX studies throughout the entire week (similar to what I had previously advertised). If you are attending GTC 2010 and you are interested, look for the related flyer in your conference bag. The conference is an excellent opportunity to connect in-person with various individuals that I have only met virtually. From an educational perspective there is a very long and interesting session list, with multiple concurrent slots, making it very hard to choose between them, but I have managed to create my (packed) schedule. • Data Pump: Consistent Export?

  Ouch ... I have to admit as I did say in several workshops in the past weeks that a data pump export with expdp is per se consistent. Well ... I thought it is ... but it's not. Thanks to a customer who is doing a large unicode migration at the moment. We were discussing parameters in the expdp's par file. And I did ask my colleagues after doing some research on MOS. And here are the results of my "research": MOS Note 377218.1 has a nice example showing a data pump export of a partitioned table with DELETEs on that table as inconsistent Background:Back in the old 9i days when Data Pump was designed flashback technology wasn't as popular and well known as today - and UNDO usage was the major concern as a consistent per default export would have heavily relied on UNDO. That's why - similar to good ol' exp - the export won't operate per default in consistency mode To get a consistent data pump export with expdp you'll have to set: FLASHBACK_TIME=SYSTIMESTAMPin your parameter file. Then it will be consistent according to the timestamp when the process has been started. You could use FLASHBACK_SCN instead and determine the SCN beforehand if you'd like to be exact. So sorry if I had proclaimed a feature which unfortunately is not there by default - Mike

• Hot Off the Press - Oracle Exadata: A Data Management Tipping Point

  Advances in data-management architecture - including CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and the database - have been steady but piecemeal. In this report, Merv Adrian describes how Oracle Exadata not only provides the latest technology in each part of the data-management architecture, but also integrates them under the full control of one vendor with a unified approach to leveraging the full stack. He writes, "the real "secret sauce" of Oracle Exadata V2 is the way in which these technologies complement each other to deliver additional performance and scalability." Merv interviews two Exadata customers, Banco Transylvania and TUI Netherlands, and concludes that early indications are that Oracle Exadata is delivering on its promise of extreme performance and scalability. His recommendation to IT is to target corporate applications with the biggest potential for speed-based enhancement, and consider whether Oracle Exadata V2 can cost-effectively enable new ways to use these for competitive advantage.   I have read this post: What should every programmer know about web development? but I have some more questions... I will be developing a content related website very soon and I am confused about some technology stuff. I am thinking about developing the site using ruby on rails. So when I'll be buying hosting, do I need to ask for something special? Like for example, we need to specify what kind of hosting we need, windows or linux. So for ruby on rails do I need some extra facilities from the hosting provider? Is ruby on rails a good choice for a large content related website? This may be a bit stupid but how do I choose my backend, scripting languages etc? Thing is I am really new to website development. And the flow of making websites is not clear. Any links will be helpful. EDIT: I know this question has been voted as non constructive. But if any one still has some precise knowledge about how the flow of website development goes, please comment your views.. That will be helpful!
