• Why can't I get properties from members of this collection?

  I've added some form controls to a collection and can retrieve their properties when I refer to the members by index. However, when I try to use any properties by referencing members of the collection I see a 'Could not set the ControlSource property. Member not found.' error in the Locals window. • [Ruby] Modifying object inside a loop doesn't change object outside of the loop?

  I am having problems with modifying objects inside blocks and not getting the expected values outside the blocks. This chunk of code is supposed to transform a bunch of points in 3d space, calculate a score (the rmsd or root mean squared deviation), and store both the score and the set of points that produced that score if it is lower than the current lowest score. At the end, I want to print out the best bunch of points. first = get_transformed_points(ARGV[0]) second = get_transformed_points(ARGV[1]) best_rmsd = first.rmsd(second) best_points = second #transform the points around x, y, and z and get the rmsd. If the new points # have a smaller rmsd, store them. ROTATION = 30 #rotate by ROTATION degrees num_rotations = 360/ROTATION radians = ROTATION * (Math::PI/180) num_rotations.times do |i| second = second * x_rotate num_rotations.times do |j| second = second * y_rotate num_rotations.times do |k| second = second * z_rotate rmsd = first.rmsd(second) if rmsd < best_rmsd then best_points = second best_rmsd = rmsd end end end end File.open("#{ARGV[1]}.out", "w") {|f| f.write(best_points.to_s)} I can print out the points that are getting stored inside the block, and they are getting transformed and stored correctly. However, when I write out the points to a file at the end, they are the same as the initial set of points. Somehow the best_points = second chunk doesn't seem to be doing anything outside of the block. It seems like there are some scoping rules that I don't understand here. I had thought that since I declared and defined best_points above, outside of the blocks, that it would be updated inside the blocks. However, it seems that when the blocks end, it somehow reverts back to the original value. Any ideas how to fix this? Is this a problem with blocks specifically?

• How does Crystal Reports Runtime Licensing work?

  I am designing an application in C# and I want to use some Crystal Reports in my application. I am selling this application as freelance to a small business. This is my first program that I have ever sold. I have Crystal Reports 2008 that I am using to design reports with. Do I need to get any kind of licensing from Business Objects to include the Crystal Reports Runtime for report printing in my application? Or do I not need to worry about it as long as I have a licensed version of Crystal Reports 2008 on my development machine. The client would only need be able to print the reports that I have designed on my machine, not design their own. The reports would be saved as a file. The application will load the saved report and print it with provided data. I did see this article which answers the most part of my question. However, it does not include whether it covers loading saved report documents? Any additional related information for a commercial product newbie is gladly appreciated.

• Exit and rollback everything in script on error

  Hey guys ! I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I have a TSQL script that does a lot of database structure adjustments but it's not really safe to just let it go through when something fails. to make things clear: using MS SQL 2005 it's NOT a stored procedure, just a script file (.sql) what I have is something in the following order BEGIN TRANSACTION ALTER Stuff GO CREATE New Stuff GO DROP Old Stuff GO IF @@ERROR != 0 BEGIN PRINT 'Errors Found ... Rolling back' ROLLBACK TRANSACTION RETURN END ELSE PRINT 'No Errors ... Committing changes' COMMIT TRANSACTION just to illustrate what I'm working with ... can't go into specifics now, the problem ... When I introduce an error (to test if things get rolled back), I get a statement that the ROLLBACK TRANSACTION could not find a corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION. This leads me to believe that something when REALLY wrong and the transaction was already killed. what I also noticed is that the script didn't fully quit on error and thus DID try to execute every statement after the error occured. (I noticed this when new tables showed up when I wasn't expecting them because it should have rollbacked) any help in this department is welcome if more speficics are needed, ask! greetz

• Convert a image to a monochrome byte array

  I am writing a library to interface C# with the EPL2 printer language. One feature I would like to try to implement is printing images, the specification doc says p1 = Width of graphic Width of graphic in bytes. Eight (8) dots = one (1) byte of data. p2 = Length of graphic Length of graphic in dots (or print lines) Data = Raw binary data without graphic file formatting. Data must be in bytes. Multiply the width in bytes (p1) by the number of print lines (p2) for the total amount of graphic data. The printer automatically calculates the exact size of the data block based upon this formula. I plan on my source image being a 1 bit per pixel bmp file, already scaled to size. I just don't know how to get it from that format in to a byte[] for me to send off to the printer. I tried ImageConverter.ConvertTo(Object, Type) it succeeds but the array it outputs is not the correct size and the documentation is very lacking on how the output is formatted. My current test code. Bitmap i = (Bitmap)Bitmap.FromFile("test.bmp"); ImageConverter ic = new ImageConverter(); byte[] b = (byte[])ic.ConvertTo(i, typeof(byte[])); Any help is greatly appreciated even if it is in a totally different direction.

• why does setting stderr=subprocess.STDOUT fix a subprocess.check_output call?

  I have a python script running on a small server that is called in three different ways - from within another python script, by cron, or by gammu-smsd (an SMS daemon with the wonderful mobile utility [gammu]). The script is for maintenance and contained the following kludge to measure used space on the system (presumably this is possible from within Python, but this was quick and dirty): reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], shell=True)[0:-1] Oddly enough this line would only fail when the script was called by a shell script running from gammu-smsd. The line would fail with a CalledProcessError exception saying "returned exit status 2", even though the output attribute of the CalledProcessError object contained the correct output. The only command in the sequence of shell commands that would give such an error status would be awk, with status 2 indicating a fatal error. If the python script with this line was called by cron, by another python script, or from the command line, this line would work fine. I broke my head trying to fix the environment for the script, thinking this must be the problem. Finally though I put in stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, like so: reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, shell=True)[0:-1] This was a debug measure to help me figure out if some output was coming on stderr. But after this the script started working, even when called from gammu-smsd! Why might this be the case? I ask for future reference when using subprocess...

• Am I using the getch() function from the ncurses library incorrectly?

  I am writing a Pacman game in c++ using the ncurses library, but I am not able to move the Pacman properly. I have used getch() to move it it up, down, left and right, but it only moves right and does not move anywhere else when I press any other key. This is a code snippet for moving up. • Python finding substring between certain characters using regex and replace()

  Suppose I have a string with lots of random stuff in it like the following: strJunk ="asdf2adsf29Value=five&lakl23ljk43asdldl" And I'm interested in obtaining the substring sitting between 'Value=' and '&', which in this example would be 'five'. I can use a regex like the following: match = re.search(r'Value=?([^&>]+)', strJunk) >>> print match.group(0) Value=five >>> print match.group(1) five How come match.group(0) is the whole thing 'Value=five' and group(1) is just 'five'? And is there a way for me to just get 'five' as the only result? (This question stems from me only having a tenuous grasp of regex) I am also going to have to make a substitution in this string such such as the following: val1 = match.group(1) strJunk.replace(val1, "six", 1) Which yields: 'asdf2adsf29Value=six&lakl23ljk43asdldl' Considering that I plan on performing the above two tasks (finding the string between 'Value=' and '&', as well as replacing that value) over and over, I was wondering if there are any other more efficient ways of looking for the substring and replacing it in the original string. I'm fine sticking with what I've got but I just want to make sure that I'm not taking up more time than I have to be if better methods are out there.

• CSS to specify positions over a scanned document

  I'm trying to write the CSS rules to position text over a scanned document. Reason: The document is a pre-printed form. I am trying to position the text on-screen so that it relates to the 'spaces' on the actual form. Issue: Although I position the values using centimeters, they don't seem to get aligned with the ones on the actual page. I can see this misalignment since my scanned image is in the background of the page. What I've tried: I used a ruler to physically measure the locations and specify them with CSS. But on-screen, it doesn't tally. I used the scanned image to position the CSS values. Then the printout is not correct. I even scaled the scanned page using Inkscape to the exact dimensions in centimeters and took into account all margins, etc... What I need: I am trying to correctly show the output values on-screen AND have them print in the correct manner as well. I know that using two CSS sheets (one for print) is an option. But I'm developing this program away from where the actual printing is to be done. So is there a convenient way of matching the exact screen locations with those on the actual/final prinout? Thanks!

  I'm consuming (via urllib/urllib2) an API that returns XML results. The API always returns the total_hit_count for my query, but only allows me to retrieve results in batches of, say, 100 or 1000. The API stipulates I need to specify a start_pos and end_pos for offsetting this, in order to walk through the results. Say the urllib request looks like "http://someservice?query='test'&start_pos=X&end_pos=Y". If I send an initial 'taster' query with lowest data transfer such as http://someservice?query='test'&start_pos=1&end_pos=1 in order to get back a result of, for conjecture, total_hits = 1234, I'd like to work out an approach to most cleanly request those 1234 results in batches of, again say, 100 or 1000 or...   I have an application which needs to open the file, then find string in it, and print a line number where is string found. For example, file example.txt contains few hashes: APLF2J51 1a79a4d60de6718e8e5b326e338ae533 EEQJE2YX 66b375b08fc869632935c9e6a9c7f8da O87IGF8R c458fb5edb84c54f4dc42804622aa0c5 APLF2J51 B7TSW1ZE 1e9eea56686511e9052e6578b56ae018 EEQJE2YX affb23b07576b88d1e9fea50719fb3b7 So, I want to PHP search for "1e9eea56686511e9052e6578b56ae018" and print out its line number, in this case 4. Please note that there are will not be multiple hashes in file. I found a few codes over Internet, but none seem to work. • Recursive Iterators

  I am having some trouble making an iterator that can traverse the following type of data structure. I have a class called Expression, which has one data member, a List<object>. This list can have any number of children, and some of those children might be other Expression objects. I want to traverse this structure, and print out every non-list object (but I do want to print out the elements of the list of course), but before entering a list, I want to return "begin nest" and after I just exited a list, I want to return "end nest". I was able to do this if I ignored the class wherever possible, and just had List<object> objects with List<object> items if I wanted a subExpression, but I would rather do away with this, and instead have an Expressions as the sublists (it would make it easier to do operations on the object. I am aware that I could use extension methods on the List<object> but it would not be appropriate (who wants an Evaluate method on their list that takes no arguments?). • can bind successfully to the ldap server, but needs to know how to find user w/i AD

  I create a login form to bind to the ldap server, if successful, it creates a session (which the user's username is stored within), then I go to another page that has session_start(); and it works fine. What I want to do now, is add code to test if that user is a member of a specific group. So in theory, this is what I want to do if(username session is valid) { search ldap for user -> get list of groups user is member of foreach(group they are member of) { switch(group) { case STAFF: print 'they are member of staff group'; $access = true; break; default: print 'not a member of STAFF group'; $access = false; break; } if(group == STAFF) { break; } } if($access == TRUE) { // you have access to the content on this page } else { // you do not have access to this page } } How do I do a ldap_search w/o binding? I don't want to keep asking for their password on each page, and I can't pass their password thru a session. Any help is appreciated.

• Why is it that an int in C++ that isnt initialized (then used) doesn't return an error?

  I am new to C++ (just starting). I come from a Java background and I was trying out the following piece of code that would sum the numbers between 1 and 10 (inclusive) and then print out the sum: /* * File: main.cpp * Author: omarestrella * * Created on June 7, 2010, 8:02 PM */ #include <cstdlib> #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { int sum; for(int x = 1; x <= 10; x++) { sum += x; } cout << "The sum is: " << sum << endl; return 0; } When I ran it it kept printing 32822 for the sum. I knew the answer was supposed to be 55 and realized that its print the max value for a short (32767) plus 55. Changing int sum; to int sum = 0; would work (as it should, since the variable needs to be initialized!). Why does this behavior happen, though? Why doesnt the compiler warn you about something like this? I know Java screams at you when something isnt initialized. Thank you.

  Hi, I use SCIM on Linux for Chinese and Japanese language input. Unfortunately, when I try to capture input using Perl's STDIN, the input is crazy. As roman characters are typed, SCIM tries to guess the correct final characters. ^H (backspace) codes are used to delete previously suggested chars on the command line. (As you type, SCIM tries to guess final Asian chars and displays them.) However, these backspace chars are shown literally as ^H and not interpreted correctly. Example one-liner: perl -e 'print "Chinese: "; my $s = <STDIN>; print $s' When I enable SCIM Chinese or Japanese language input, as I type, e.g., nihao = ??, here is the result: ?^H?^H?^H?^H?^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H??^H^H?? At the very end of this string, you can see "??" (nihao/hello). At a normal bash prompt, if I type nihao (with Chinese enabled), the results is perfect. This has something to do with interpretation of backspace chars (or control chars) during Perl's STDIN. The same thing happens when using command 'read' in Bash. • can I put my sqlite connection and cursor in a function?

  I was thinking I'd try to make my sqlite db connection a function instead of copy/pasting the ~6 lines needed to connect and execute a query all over the place. I'd like to make it versatile so I can use the same function for create/select/insert/etc... Below is what I have tried. The 'INSERT' and 'CREATE TABLE' queries are working, but if I do a 'SELECT' query, how can I work with the values it fetches outside of the function? Usually I'd like to print the values it fetches and also do other things with them. When I do it like below I get an error Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\steini\Desktop\py\database\test3.py", line 15, in <module> for row in connection('testdb45.db', "select * from users"): ProgrammingError: Cannot operate on a closed database. So I guess the connection needs to be open so I can get the values from the cursor, but I need to close it so the file isn't always locked. • MPI Odd/Even Compare-Split Deadlock

  I'm trying to write an MPI version of a program that runs an odd/even compare-split operation on n randomly generated elements. Process 0 should generated the elements and send nlocal of them to the other processes, (keeping the first nlocal for itself). From here, process 0 should print out it's results after running the CompareSplit algorithm. Then, receive the results from the other processes run of the algorithm. Finally, print out the results that it has just received. I have a large chunk of this already done, but I'm getting a deadlock that I can't seem to fix. I would greatly appreciate any hints that people could give me. Here is my code http://pastie.org/3742474 Right now I'm pretty sure that the deadlock is coming from the Send/Recv at lines 134 and 151. I've tried changing the Send to use "tag" instead of myrank for the tag parameter..but when I did that I just keep getting a "MPI_ERR_TAG: invalid tag" for some reason. Obviously I would also run the algorithm within the processors 0 but I took that part out for now, until I figure out what is going wrong. Any help is appreciated.

  please look at the following code first. #! /usr/bin/perl package foo; sub new { my $pkg = shift; my $self = {}; my $self->{_fd} = undef; bless $self, $pkg; return $self; } sub Setfd { my $self = shift; my $fd = shift; $self_->{_fd} = $fd; } sub write { my $self = shift; print $self->{_fd} "hello word"; } my $foo = new foo; My intention is to store a file handle within a class using hash. the file handle is undefined at first, but can be initilized afterwards by calling Setfd function. then write can be called to actually write string "hello word" to a file indicated by the file handle, supposed that the file handle is the result of a success "write" open. but, perl compiler just complains that there are syntax error in the "print" line. can anyone of you tells me what's wrong here? thanks in advance.
