• What is the best tool to achieve this API design?

  Our web app offers a service that allows a "Publisher" to create a website (we give them a CMS system) that is ready to provide this service to "Members" (think Shopify). We have some possible clients that wish to become "Publishers" but they already have existing websites (vbulletin, word press blog, etc) with their own user base. We wish to develop an API that would allow these "Publishers" to keep using their own websites, and embed our services into them. Our main business requirement is that once "Members" are logged into the "Publishers" existing system, they should be able to also access our website without having to log-in again OR have to create another account there. The process should be seamless to the "Member" and "Publishers" should not have to sync their user base with our system. We also want to use an existing API authentication/authorization system instead of creating our own (OAuth, OpenID, etc) What would be the best way to use OAuth to achieve this sigle-sign on design? If OAuth is not the best tool, is there any other one out there that fits our requirements?

• What are the app pool identity and account for anonymous access for?

  I understand what the two are used for, except I don't know what each does--i.e. what one is for vs. what the other is for. (I usually set them to the same account anyway.) If you're not sure what accounts I'm talking about, in the IIS manager thingy: Right-click on the app pool in question, go to Properties, and click the Identity tab to see the App Pool Identity. Right-click a Web site, go to Properties - Directory Security, and click Edit under Anonymous Access and authentication control to view the Account for anonymous access.

• Devise email confirmation from localhost

  I am able to get the registration confirmation email to send out in deployment on Heroku, but when I try a registration on localhost:3000, I get the following error: undefined local variable or method `confirmed_at' for #<User:0xb67a1ff0> In my config/environments/production.rb file I have: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'xxxx.com' } And I have an initializer file with the following format: ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :user_name => "[email protected]", :password => "xxxxxx", :domain => "xxxx.com", :address => "smtp.sendgrid.net", :port => "xxx", :authentication => :plain, :enable_starttls_auto => true }; What settings do I need to get the localhost working? • OpenID token from Google (using www)?

  I've come across the following situation when using OpenID and Google as the authenticator. If you type siteName.com it takes you to http://sitename.com Which returns a different token than if I were to login to www.siteName.com, which would take me to http://www.siteName.com As a result, Google returns a different authentication token. Is there a simple fix around this? Maybe redirect the user from siteName.com to www.siteName.com? Would this be a server issue, or is this something I can do programmatically? Thanks in advance for any answers, this question had plagued me for some time now as I just figured out why others had been receiving different credentials upon logging in.

• Authorization in a more purely OOP style...

  I've never seen this done but I had an idea of doing authorization in a more purely OO way. For each method that requires authorization we associate a delegate. During initialization of the class we wire up the delegates so that they point to the appropriate method (based on the user's rights). For example: class User { private deleteMemberDelegate deleteMember; public StatusMessage DeleteMember(Member member) { if(deleteMember != null) { deleteMember(member); } } //other methods defined similarly... User(string name, string password) //cstor. { //wire up delegates based on user's rights. //Thus we handle authentication and authorization in the same method. } } This way the client code never has to explictly check whether or not a user is in a role, it just calls the method. Of course each method should return a status message so that we know if and why it failed. Thoughts?

• MOSS search crawl fails with "Access is denied ..."

  Recently the search crawler stopped working on my MOSS installation. The message in the crawl log is Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content. (The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it.) The default content account is an admin on the site collection that I am trying to crawl. Almost every result for this error on Google tells me to add the DisableLoobackCheck registry key with a value of 1. I have done this and rebooted and the error continues. The "Do not allow Basic Authentication" checkbox in my crawl rule screen is unchecked. Is there anything else that could be causing this error? Something with file system or database permissions maybe?

• Unable to access LinkedIn conections using python rauth library

  I was trying out this example at https://github.com/litl/rauth/blob/master/examples/linkedin-web.py I get a 403, Access to connections denied error and it returns KeyError: '_total'. r_network option is present. Has anyone faced this issue? Also if you look at http://docs.python-requests.org/en/latest/user/quickstart/#oauth-authentication, the 'requests' library is initializing resource_owner_key, resource_owner_secret apart from the application keys. Not sure how these are getting passed from the 'rauth' library, Was wondering if that was causing this 403 error.

  I am writing a filter that will handle all authentication related tasks. • How to create an object reference to a xaml page from App.xaml.cs codebehind?

  Hi all, I have a Silverlight 4 Business Project where I have enabled the ASP.NET Authentication/Authorization role information. I would like to pass the currently authenticated user's account information from the app.xaml.cs codebehind to a different XAML page, but I have no idea how that is done, or if it's even possible. My goal is to databind the IsEnabled property of various buttons of my target XAML page, based on whether the current user is in a particular admin related role or not. The Application_UserLoaded event handler of app.xaml.cs seems to be the safest event handler to initiate this task because it fires only after the user's account information is loaded from the server. I had previously attempted to retrieve the current user information directly from my target XAML page, but I was never getting the current user information because Application_UserLoaded hadn't finished loading the current user info yet. public partial class App : Application { private void Application_UserLoaded(LoadUserOperation operation) { // How do you create an object reference to a XAML page from your project solution // from this event handler? } } Thanks in advance for any assistance, John

• Asp.net mvc 2 and twitter authenticaton

  I am using OAuth (linq2twitter and DotNetOpenAuth) to allow a user to post comments via their twitter account. So when you do the authorization twitter does a callback, so the way linq2twitter does it is to set the callback to the page that did the req. So if the req came from blah.com\twit it will redirect to blah.com\twit. This leads me to have code like this: public ActionResult Twit(){ var qString = Request.QueryString; if (qString.Count <= 0){ //do authorization } else{ //do authentication } } So I would like to split it to this(seemingly both of these calls are done via GET): public ActionResult Twit(){} public ActionResult Twit(string token1, string token2){} When I have this currently I get the .net yellow screen complaining about ambiguous action methods. How do I route this?

  Can Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web Edition be used in "closed" websites, which are hosted on the Internet, but require users to log in? We are developing a web application for banks. This is a website for clients of the bank; it allows clients to log in and view information on their personal banking accounts, stock portfolios, etc. Can this web app use SQL Server 2008 Web Edition? Here is information on this edition of SQL Server: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/web.aspx It is said on this page that Web Edition can be used only on "public and Internet accessible ... Web applications". Technically, the web app we are developing is public and Internet accessible - although it requires authentication. Won't using Web Edition in our web app violate SQL Server license terms? Thank you.

  I have been using rails for developing web applications and now i need to do design an api for iphone application and since i used respond to json it also produces json but i use devise for authentication in my web application and when i send email and password along with the api it gives out {"user":{"authentication_token":"Lsusyd27ewgasga63","email":"[email protected]"}} and there is forgot password functionality in the iphone app but in the web application when clicking on forgot password button it sends an email to the users email, whereby the user has to go to his mail and click on the link sent and it will take to the change password path and after changing it the user will be login but in this iphone app i want to send the password to the user mail and the user can use that password and login. How can i do this? Also do i have to create new controllers for api or the web application controller is enough if it respond as json? please help me.

• Using twitter gem to signup and authenticate users

  Hi, I'd like to allow users the option to register using their Twitter account. Basically, I'll present them with a standard signup form (name, login, email, pwd, pwd_confirm) as well as a "Signup with Twitter" link. If a user chooses to signup with Twitter creds, then I'll create a user record in db. Then I'd like to be able to allow a user to authenticate using their Twitter creds on returning visits. Also, I'm using restful_authentication, so I need to have this work within that context. What is the best way to do this? I haven't been to find any tutorials on allowing the signup and authentication pieces. Most examples just show how to authenticate a Twitter user into your app. Thanks.

• Not able to get response back on java code while http get with S60

  Hi, I am using Net Beans for developing an application on S60. I made one page for user authentication and using .net wcf service to authenticate user. i am able to send data on .net service by HttpGet method but not able to get response back on java page. I have tested it on fiddler with this url its working fine and returning response code 200, but not getting response code by java code. Following code i am using. • ASP.NET Build Images Links Dynamically

  Good Day, I am developing a website that has product images on an external server. I have code that tests to see if the image exists like (pseudo code): DynamicString = FunctionThatCreatesDynamicString() ' DynamicString = "http://external_server/path/to/file1.jpg" If ImageExists(DyanmicString) = StatusCode.200 Then ' Embed link in ASP.NET page Else ' Embed not found image in ASP.NET page End If My code builds fine and appears to execute. The problem occurs when I attempt to view the external link in a browser, the image appears properly (I have to authenticate first, but that's OK considering I'm on an internal network and this app will be used internally). However, when I attempt the view the source in my generated HTML page, I am seeing the image to the "Not Found" image when I know the image is there. I compared all the characters in my dynamically assembled to the external link and all the characters are matching up correctly. I'm wondering if the authentication has anything to do with why the image is not rendering properly on my rendered HTML. Any thoughts? TIA, coson

Within the Standalone Application a web browser needs to be opened, going to a page within the Web Application. This page is for authorized users only.   I think there are a few similar questions that seem to suggest using app_data in the signed request (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/authentication/signed_request/) but I'm not sure if it will be possible to do what I am trying to achieve with it as I've never used it before. If I have my Facebook 'Tab' Url as follows: http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAGE_TITLE/PAGE_ID?sk=app_APP_ID What I want to do is add an extra parameter on the end as follows: &WT.mc_id=email-uk-8014 The reason for this is for tracking purposes and links will be sent out of the form http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAGE_TITLE/PAGE_ID?sk=app_APP_ID&WT.mc_id=email-uk-8014 and the extra parameter will allow us to track the campaign id. As you can see I have no way of knowing the value of the parameter beforehand as it depends on the link clicked by the user so is it possible to somehow get the value of the WT.mc_id parameter inside my iframe app?

• Extracting a Rails application into a plugin or engine

  I have a Rails 2.3 application which I would like to extract into a plugin, or engine. The application has user authentication, and basic cms capabilities supported by ancestry plugin. I want to extract the logic for the application into a plugin/engine so that I can use this code for future projects, with a different "skin" or "theme" if required. I'm not entirely sure I actually understand the difference between plugin and engine concepts, so that would be a good first point. What is the best approach, are there any good starting points, links, explanations, examples that I should follow. Also, with the release of R3 to consider, is there anything that I should be aware of for that, with regards to plugins etc. I am going to start off by watching Ryan's http://railscasts.com/episodes/149-rails-engines but obviously thats over a year old now, so one of the challenges I'm faced with is finding the most up to date and relevant information on this subject. All tips and help gratefully received.

• Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

  Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ?   I am trying to setup SVN authorization (authentication works fine already) and my AuthzSVNAccessFile looks like the following: [groups] todos = user1, user2 proj = user1 [/] @todos = r [/myproj] @proj = rw However, I can checkout the content of proj (as user1) but I can't commit to it... If i change the file changing to the following: [groups] todos = user1, user2 proj = user1 [/] @todos = rw [/myproj] @proj = rw I can successful commit... Anyone knows what's wrong with my access file? I am using SVN with SVNParentPath, to point to a folder containing multiple repositories. The errors it gives are: svn: Error: Server sent unexpected return value (403 Forbidden) in response to CHE CKOUT Thanks.

  Hi, I have a MVC app that has forms authentication enabled. The app allows printing of invoices. I have an external app that converts html to pdf. How can I call the secured page from this pdf converter app so that some security remains? The PDF converter app just requires a URL. One thought was to create a HttpHandler for an extenion of say .print and pass a public key in the URL qureystring that can be validated by the MVC app. Any ideas on this? Malcolm
