• Manage bad_alloc exception in C++ construtor

  I have Java experience and recently am doing some C++ coding. My question is that if I have class A, in which I have to instantiate class B and class C as two of the member variables of A. If in the constructor of A, should I assume that allocations of class B and C never fail, and handle the bad allocation exception in the destructor of A? If I don't make that assumption, meaning that I add some try catch block to catch bad_alloc of class B and class C, then if the allocation exception occurs, should I do clean up in the constructor of A? What are the recommended practices? If "new" generates a bad allocation, what value does the pointer carry?

• MyFaces Test Framework not working with JSF 2.1

  we have a lot of tests that uses Myfaces Test Framework for JSF 2.0. http://myfaces.apache.org/test/index.html Problem is we can't get it to work with JSF 2.1. Does anyone know a workaround or a way to solve this? When we run the tests we get the following error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Application was not properly initialized at startup, could not find Factory: javax.faces.application.ApplicationFactory It works fine with jsf 2.0 though. A typical use case in our code: // code block; assertFalse("Error message not expected. ", facesContext .getMessages().hasNext()); JSF 2.1 has a few syntax changes so my guess would be that's the problem.

• Not allowing next jqueryui.show() animation to start without finishing previous one

I need this done one-by-one. How do I tell .show() to execute the next show() after the previous one is completed ? Or do I specify this in each() ?

• Is `eval`ing in a CPAN module without localizing $@ a bug?

  I think I've encountered a bug in Params::Validate, but I'm not sure whether I identified the problematic code piece correctly. The code in question failed to pass exceptions up the chain (using Try::Tiny), so I started debugging and found out that a class used inside the try block has a destructor. This destructor calls object methods which use Params::Validate and looking into Validate.pm source I see an eval without $@ localization, i.e. the global $@ gets overwritten. Now I see two options: Params::Validate should always localize $@ and thus it's a bug that should be reported. The bug is in the class in question, because it shouldn't use Params::Validate in a destructor. Params::Validate can stay as it is now. Which one is it? How I should I handle this situation? PS: I think that CPAN modules should be rock-solid and neither break themselves nor their environment, hence the question title.

• Produce a script to hit Google once a day and log our position in the results?

  The need has arisen within our organisation to monitor (on a daily basis) where our site appears (both organic and PPC) on the page 1 of Google. Also where a key competitor appears. For certain key words. In the immediate short term a colleague is doing this by hitting Google manually and jotting down the results. Yep. It occurs to us we can write a script (e.g. using C#) to do this. I know Analytics will tell us an awful lot but it doesn't note the competitor's position, plus I don't think it has other data we want. Question is, is there an existing basic tool which does this (for free, I guess)? And if we write it ourselves, where to start and are there obvious pitfalls to avoid (for example can Google detect and block automated requests?)

  Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case? • Is there a semantic difference <span>'s and <div>'s?

  I know when coding HTML, I'm supposed to keep semantics in mind, e.g., h1 needs to be a main header, h2 needs to be a subheader, tables need to be tables, use <em> for emphasis instead of <i>, etc. Is there a proper difference between divs and spans except one is a block and the other is in-line? When I was learning I was told that <span>'s were for styling text mid-line. If I had a small blurb of text that I needed positioned at a certain point in my webpage, one that doesn't warrent a <p> tag, would I use a span should I stick with div's? What if that text needs to cover two lines (i.e., it needs a width) if it contains nothing but text, what should I use?

  I have the need for an ASP.NET custom server control that will check the web.config file for a connectionstring name, prompt the user to create said connectionstring if not present, and execute create table stored procedures using the connection. This control will be embedded into a webpart for use in a WSS3.0 solution. Can anyone suggest some good tutorials on creating this type of control - specifically addressing use of connectionstrings? • Prepared statement initialized tiwice and closed once

  Hi, I want to know that if a PreparedStatement object is initialized twice the way shown in code snippet below and closed only once in finally block, will it fail to close? I am not getting any error in this code but will it be a better idea to use 2 different preparedStatements instead of one. I think it fails to close the preparedStatement at #1. • Is there any way to prevent the display of unmatched xml tags using xslt?

  Here is a contrived example of an xml document. In my real world case, the xml is fairly complex with multiple nested levels. <alphabet> <a>A</a> <b>B</b> <c>C</c> ... and so on </alphabet> Using xslt, I want to transform the document so that only the vowels are printed. In my real world case, we're using empty template match tags to block the display. But that's too verbose for my liking.

• Are there any context-sensitive code search tools?

  I have been getting very frustrated recently in dealing with a massive bulk of legacy code which I am trying to get familiar with. Say I try to search for a particular function call, I get loads of results that turn out to be completely irrelevant; some of them are easy to spot, eg a comment saying // Fixed functionality in foo() so don't need to handle this here any more But others are much harder to spot manually, because they turn out to be calls from other functions in modules that are only compiled in certain cases, or are part of a much larger block of code that is #if 0'd out in its entirety. What I'd like would be a search tool that would allow me to search for a term and give me the choice to include or exclude commented out or #if 0'd out code. Then the search results would be displayed alongside a list of #defines that are required in order for that snippet of code to be relevant. I'm working in C / C++, but other than the specific comment syntax I guess the techniques should be more generally applicable. Does such a tool exist?

• 505 (HTTP version not supported) sent to client when ASP.NET application attempts to access WCF service

  We have created a DLL to facilitate access of a 3rd-party WCF Service. This DLL works fine in a Windows Application on our test machines, but when we try to use it in an ASP.NET application on our web server, our web server returns a 505 HTTP version not supported error to the client. To clarify, the setup is Client-Server-WCF Service. Using Fiddler, I can tell that our server is not making requests to the WCF Service. The calls are wrapped in a try/catch block, but no Exception occurs. Instead, as soon as the call to the service is attempted, our server returns a 505 error to the client and terminates execution. We are using clientCertificate authentication over HTTPS with serviceCertificate certificateValidationMode set to "None". Thanks

  I am working on a social site where users can block other users. Throughout the site --dozens of places, user information is displayed. For example, user comments, reply forms, online user list.. etc etc.. The problem is that given the high number of places user info is displayed, it's becoming very difficult to check each time if that user is blocked. For example: <g:each var="comment" in="${comments}"> <g:if test="!${loggedInUser.blockedUsers.find { it == comment.user}"> show comment </g:if> </g:each> Does Grails provide any functionality that would facilitate creating some kind of filter or intercepter where I could simply exclude blocked users when iterating lists, etc? If not, what would you suggest I do?

• Android: Prompt user to save changes when Back button is pressed

  I have an activity that contains several user editable items (an EditText field, RatingBar, etc). I'd like to prompt the user if the back/home button is pressed and changes have been made that have not yet been saved. After reading through the android documentation, it seems like this piece of code should go in the onPause method. I've tried putting an AlertDialog in the onPause however the dialog gets shown and then immediately tears down because nothing is there to block the pause from completing. • implementing keepalives with Java

  Hi All, I am biulding a client-server application where I have to implement a keepalive mechanism in order to detect that the client has crashed or not. I have separate threads on both client and server side. the client thread sends a "ping" then sleeps for 3 seconds, while the server reads the BufferedInput Stream and checks whether ping is received, if so it makes the ping counter eqauls zero, else it increments the counter by +1, the server thread then sleeps for 3 seconds, if the ping counter reaches 3, it daclares the client as dead. The problem is that when the server reads the input stream, its a blocking call, and it blocks untill the next ping is received, irrespective of how delayed it is, so the server never detects a missed ping. any suggestions, so that I can read the current value of the stream and it doesn't block if there is nothing on the incoming stream.   When I add text to my web page using my text editor it display styles correctly inside the text editor which basically is a iframe. After this data is saved it's displayed on another page where the issue occurs. I wanted the description section on my web page to use its own style without getting overwritten by the page styles. Do i need to use a iframe to display this data? Is there a way I can prevent a block from using the page style. Please advise. Appreciate all your help.

  I've an entity LearningUnit that has an int primary key. Actually, it has nothing more. Entity Concept has the following relationship with it: @ManyToOne @Size(min=1,max=7) private LearningUnit learningUnit; In a constructor of Concept I need to retrieve the LearningUnit with the greatest primary key. If no LearningUnit exists yet I instantiate one. I then set this.learningUnit to the retrieved/instantied. Finally, I call the empty constructor of Concept in a try-catch block, to have the entitymanager do the cardinality check. If an exception is thrown (I expect one in the case that already another 7 Concepts are referring to the same LearningUnit. In that case, I case instantiate a new LearningUnit with a new greater primary key. Please, also point out, if any, clear pitfalls in my outlined algorithm above.

  ok, here i have some weird question: let say we have some binary file (.log), and sequence of write operations, for example log1, log2, log3 and each has some block size n (raw data). question: can I be sure that log1,log2 and log3 sequences can be written in the correct order in ONE file, even if i have few cache levels (disk hardware and os level)? update very interested in what will be with records order (not with records) if we have software or hardware failure (reboot or another reason). update there can be some percent of write failures, but main question is: will write order stay correct?

• ant support for dynamic target

  I previous saw some similar questions on stackoverflow but didn't see any solution. I guess the answer could be impossible and I am trying to see who can provide me this confirmation. AFAIK, an ant project contains several targets and each target may have several tasks. There is an task MacroDef that defines a sequential of `things' (tasks I suppose?). I tried to put target inside this block but ant complains the name of the target is missing (I am using the attribute of the macrodef to generate the name of the target). So it could be a dead end. Then I found that by using a task `script', we have access to the Project and can even call addTarget/AddOrReplaceTarget from there. But it seems that the targets I create there have no impact on the running targets. Does that mean ant doesn't support manipulating dependencies at target runtime? Is there any way to generate these targets before ant start building the dependency graph?

  See this SuperUser question. To summarize, VM software lets you save state of arbitrary applications (by saving the whole VM image). Would it be possible to write some software for Windows that allows you to save and reload arbitrary application state? If so (and presumably so), what would it entail? I would be looking to implement this, if possible, in a high-level language like C#. I presume if I used something else, I would need to dump memory registers (or maybe dump the entire application memory block) to a file somewhere and load it back somewhere to refresh state. So how do I build this thing?

• Is there a way to set up a Linux pipe to non-buffering or line-buffering?

  My program is controlling an external application on Linux, passing in input commands via a pipe to the external applications stdin, and reading output result via a pipe from the external applications stdout. The problem is that writes to pipes are buffered by block, and not by line, and therefore delays occur before my app receives data output by the external application. The external application cannot be altered to add explicit fflush() calls. When I set the external application to /bin/cat -n (it echoes back the input, with line numbers added), it works correctly, it seems, cat flushes after each line. The only way to force the external application to flush, is sending exit command to it; as it receives the command, it flushes, and all the answers appears on the stdout, just before exiting. I'm pretty sure, that Unix pipes are appropiate solution for that kind of interprocess communication (pseudo server-client), but maybe I'm wrong.
