  I have 2 drives in my PC one is primary master and used to be the system drive with windows XP installed. The second one is secondary and has Windows 7 installed that I'm using as the operating system. I want to decommission the old hard drive with XP and re-plug the Windows 7 one as the primary master so I could boot from it. What is the safest way for me to write the correct boot sector on the Windows 7 hard drive so I don't ruin my Windows 7 installation?

• Why is it a bad practice to call System.gc?

  After answering to a question about how to force-free objects in Java (the guy was clearing a 1.5GB HashMap) with System.gc(), I've been told it's a bad practice to call System.gc() manually, but the comments seemed mitigated about it. So much that no one dared to upvote it, nor downvote it. I've been told there it's a bad practice, but then I've also been told garbage collector runs don't systematically stop the world anymore, and that it could also be only seen as a hint, so I'm kind of at loss. I do understand that usually the JVM knows better than you when it needs to reclaim memory. I also understand that worrying about a few kilobytes of data is silly. And I also understand that even megabytes of data isn't what it was a few years back. But still, 1.5 gigabyte? And you know there's like 1.5 GB of data hanging around in memory; it's not like it's a shot in the dark. Is System.gc() systematically bad, or is there some point at which it becomes okay? So the question is actually double: Why is it or not a bad practice to call System.gc()? Is it really a hint under certain implementations, or is it always a full collection cycle? Are there really garbage collector implementations that can do their work without stopping the world? Please shed some light over the various assertions people have made. Where's the threshold? Is it never a good idea to call System.gc(), or are there times when it's acceptable? If any, what are those times?

  I recently had an issue after upgrading my .net framework to 4.0 from 3.5, I did this because in 4.0 the SMTPClient finally sends a QUIT command to the SMTP server.   Hi, I need to determine what file type a file is and then perform a certain action for it. this seems to work fine for some types, however all media types such as videos and sound files get mixed up. Here's the problem though. The iPhone calls them both.   I recently purchased a Mushkim SSD to replace my failing hard drive of my H/P Dv6-12465dx laptop. Physical installation of the SSD should be easy. I have my existing HD divided into five virtual drives, one of which contains the Windows 7 Operating System. There were no back up disks when I purchased the machine originally. How do I go about saving the Operating system and transferring it to the new SSD?

• Can I split system.serviceModel into a separate .config file?

  I want to separate my system.serviceModel section of the web.config into a separate file to facilitate some environment settings. My efforts have been fruitless. When I attempt it using this method. The wcf code throws an exception: "The type initializer for 'System.ServiceModel.ClientBase 1 threw an exception. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Web.config: <configuration> <system.serviceModel configSource="MyWCF.config" /> .... MyWCF.config: <system.serviceModel> <extensions> ... </extensions> <bindings> ... </bindings> <behaviors> ... </behaviors> <client> ... </client> </system.serviceModel>

• How to pull/push data from/to existing SAP system?

  I need to connect to a SAP system, to pull/push data to/from that system? I downloaded SAP PDK for .NET, build a solution using it, but this requires Portal Runtime for .NET to be installed on server, and this cannot be done, because SAP server is a Solaris one! Also, I've checked existing solutions, but all of them use VS.NET 2003, to create what is called SAP Connector Proxy? So, is there a way to connect to SAP system apart from using VS.NET 2003?

  I have a server with Debian that have 3 physical partitions covering all the disk: boot, root y swap. Now I want to replace that partitions with LVM partitions. I know how install Debian with LVM at beginning, but in this case I can't install the system at beginning because the provider gets me a server with remote access and the system installed in this way. How can I change that partitions using only an ssh connection and possibly other remote server where to put some temporal data?

• Who calls the Destructor of the class when operator delete is used in multiple inheritance.

  This question may sound too silly, however , I don't find concrete answer any where else. With little knowledge on how late binding works and virtual keyword used in inheritance. As in the code sample, when in case of inheritance where a base class pointer pointing to a derived class object created on heap and delete operator is used to deallocate the memory , the destructor of the of the derived and base will be called in order only when the base destructor is declared virtual function. Now my question is : 1) When the destructor of base is not virtual, why the problem of not calling derived dtor occur only when in case of using "delete" operator , why not in the case given below: derived drvd; base *bPtr; bPtr = &drvd; //DTOR called in proper order when goes out of scope. 2) When "delete" operator is used, who is reponsible to call the destructor of the class? The operator delete will have an implementation to call the DTOR ? or complier writes some extra stuff ? If the operator has the implementation then how does it looks like , [I need sample code how this would have been implemented]. 3) If virtual keyword is used in this example, how does operator delete now know which DTOR to call? Fundamentaly i want to know who calls the dtor of the class when delete is used. I want to determine the alpha channel value of the mouse cursor when I click on any portion of this image. • How do I restore system default settings on Linux Mint KDE?

  I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

• Can you have too many Delegate.BeginInvoke calls at once?

  I am cleaning up some old code converting it to work asynchronously. psDelegate.GetStops decStops = psLoadRetrieve.GetLoadStopsByLoadID; var arStops = decStops.BeginInvoke(loadID, null, null); WaitHandle.WaitAll(new WaitHandle[] { arStops.AsyncWaitHandle }); var stops = decStops.EndInvoke(arStops); Above is a single example of what I am doing for asynchronous work. My plan is to have close to 20 different delegates running. All will call BeginInvoke and wait until they are all complete before calling EndInvoke. My question is will having so many delegates running cause problems? I understand that BeginInvoke uses the ThreadPool to do work and that has a limit of 25 threads. 20 is under that limit but it is very likely that other parts of the system could be using any number of threads from the ThreadPool as well.   I want to create a query to list of all user defined stored procedures, excluding the ones that are system stored procedures, considering that: Checking the name like "sp_" doesn't work because there are user stored procedures that start with "sp_". Checking the property is_ms_shipped doesn't work because there are system stored procedures that have that flag = 0, for example: sp_alterdiagram (it is not MSShipped but appears under System Stored Procedures in SQL Server Management Studio). There must be a property, or a flag somewhere since you can see the "System Stored Procedures" in a separate folder in SQL 2005. Does anyone know?
