• encfs error while decoding the data

  I have installed encfs and started using it to secure all my personal & office data and it was working absolutely fine until 2 hours back. The setup is like this. I have a folder in Copy folder called OfficeData which gets synchronized with my Copy folder When I login into the system I use the command encfs ~/Copy/OfficeData ~/Documents/OfficeData Once my work is over I dismount with the command fusermount -u ~/Documents/OfficeData All this data get synchronized with my desktop and with my mobile phone (as a backup) Today when I mounted, the folder got mounted by no directories and files present in that folder. I was worried and read man encfs which gave me to run the command encfs -v -f ~/Copy/OfficeData ~/Documents/OfficeData 2> encfs-OfficeData-report.txt. • Error trapping for a missing data source in a Spring MVC / Spring JDBC web app [migrated]

  I have written a web app that uses Spring MVC libraries and Spring JDBC to connect to an Oracle DB. (I don't use any ORM type libraries as I create stored procedures on Oracle that do my stuff and I'm quite happy with that.) I use a connection pool to Oracle managed by the Tomcat container The app generally works absolutely fine by the way! BUT... I noticed the other day when I tried to set up the app on another Tomcat instance that I had forgotten to configure the connection pool and obviously the app could not get hold of an org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource object, so it crashed. I define the pool params in the tomcat "context.conf" In my "web.xml" I have: <servlet> <servlet-name>appServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class> <init-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/Spring/appServlet/servlet-context.xml</param-value> </init-param> <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>appServlet</servlet-name> <!-- Map *everything* to appServlet --> <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <resource-ref> <description>Oracle Datasource example</description> <res-ref-name>jdbc/ora1</res-ref-name> <res-type>org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource</res-type> <res-auth>Container</res-auth> </resource-ref> And I have a Spring "servlet-context.xml" where JNDI is used to map the data source object provided by the connection pool to a Spring bean with the ID of "dataSource": <jee:jndi-lookup id="dataSource" jndi-name="java:comp/env/jdbc/ora1" resource-ref="true" /> Here's the question: Where do I trap the case where the database cannot be accessed for whatever reason? I don't want the user to see a yard-and-a-half of Java stack trace in their browser, rather a nicer message that tells them there is a database problem etc. It seems that my app tries to configure the "dataSource" bean (in "servlet-context.xml") before any code has tested it can actually provide a dataSource object from the pool?! Maybe I'm not fully understanding exactly what is going on in these stages of the app firing up ... Thanks for any advice!

• Design Pattern for Complex Data Modeling

  I'm developing a program that has a SQL database as a backing store. As a very broad description, the program itself allows a user to generate records in any number of user-defined tables and make connections between them. As for specs: Any record generated must be able to be connected to any other record in any other user table (excluding itself...the record, not the table). These "connections" are directional, and the list of connections a record has is user ordered. Moreover, a record must "know" of connections made from it to others as well as connections made to it from others. The connections are kind of the point of this program, so there is a strong possibility that the number of connections made is very high, especially if the user is using the software as intended. A record's field can also include aggregate information from it's connections (like obtaining average, sum, etc) that must be updated on change from another record it's connected to. To conserve memory, only relevant information must be loaded at any one time (can't load the entire database in memory at load and go from there). I cannot assume the backing store is local. Right now it is, but eventually this program will include syncing to a remote db. Neither the user tables, connections or records are known at design time as they are user generated. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to design the backing store and the object model to best fit these specs. In my first design attempt on this, I had one object managing all a table's records and connections. I attempted this first because it kept the memory footprint smaller (records and connections were simple dicts), but maintaining aggregate and link information between tables became....onerous (ie...a huge spaghettified mess). Tracing dependencies using this method almost became impossible. Instead, I've settled on a distributed graph model where each record and connection is 'aware' of what's around it by managing it own data and connections to other records. Doing this increases my memory footprint but also let me create a faulting system so connections/records aren't loaded into memory until they're needed. It's also much easier to code: trace dependencies, eliminate cycling recursive updates, etc. My biggest problem is storing/loading the connections. I'm not happy with any of my current solutions/ideas so I wanted to ask and see if anybody else has any ideas of how this should be structured. Connections are fairly simple. They contain: fromRecordID, fromTableID, fromRecordOrder, toRecordID, toTableID, toRecordOrder. Here's what I've come up with so far: Store all the connections in one big table. If I do this, either I load all connections at once (one big db call) or make a call every time a user table is loaded. The big issue here: the size of the connections table has the potential to be huge, and I'm afraid it would slow things down. Store in separate tables all the outgoing connections for each user table. This is probably the worst idea I've had. Now my connections are 'spread out' over multiple tables (one for each user table), which means I have to make a separate DB called to each table (or make a huge join) just to find all the incoming connections for a particular user table. I've avoided making "one big ass table", but I'm not sure the cost is worth it. Store in separate tables all outgoing AND incoming connections for each user table (using a flag to distinguish between incoming vs outgoing). This is the idea I'm leaning towards, but it will essentially double the total DB storage for all the connections (as each connection will be stored in two tables). It also means I have to make sure connection information is kept in sync in both places. This is obviously not ideal but it does mean that when I load a user table, I only need to load one 'connection' table and have all the information I need. This also presents a separate problem, that of connection object creation. Since each user table has a list of all connections, there are two opportunities for a connection object to be made. However, connections objects (designed to facilitate communication between records) should only be created once. This means I'll have to devise a common caching/factory object to make sure only one connection object is made per connection. Does anybody have any ideas of a better way to do this? Once I've committed to a particular design pattern I'm pretty much stuck with it, so I want to make sure I've come up with the best one possible.

• More Efficient Data Structure for Large Layered Tile Map

  It seems like the popular method is to break the map up into regions and load them as needed, my problem is that in my game there are many AI entities other than the player out performing actions in virtually all the regions of the map. Let's just say I have a 5000x5000 map, when I use a 2D array of byte's to render it my game uses around 17 MB of memory, as soon as I change that data structure to a my own defined MapCell class (which only contains a single field: byte terrain) my game's memory consumption rockets up to 400+ MB. I plan on adding layering, so an array of byte's won't cut it and I figure I'd need to add a List of some sort to the MapCell class to provide objects in the layers. I'm only rendering tiles that are on screen, but I need the rest of the map to be represented in memory since it is constantly used in Update. So my question is, how can I reduce the memory consumption of my map while still maintaining the above requirements? Thank you for your time!   Prologue In the previous chapter we have see how to create DB records with EF, now we are going to Some Questions about Oracle.   ORACLE One characteristic from SQL Server that differs from Oracle is “Identity”. To all that has not worked with SQL Server, this property, that applies to Integer Columns, lets indicate that there is auto increment columns, by that way it will be filled automatically, without writing it on the insert statement. In EF with SQL Server, the properties whose match with Identity columns, will be filled after invoking SaveChanges method. In Oracle DB, there is no Identity Property, but there is something similar. Sequences Sequences are DB objects, that allow to create auto increment, but there are not related directly to a Table. • Zabbix Proxy not collecting data

  I have a working Zabbix 1.8.2 server collecting data for our office and our colo facility. However the link between the colo and office is flaky. What I'm trying to do is setup a proxy on the colo side to have a 1 hour cache and relay the data to our primary server at the office. Our zabbix server is compiled from source and uses a mysql database I've followed the instructions found in the zabbix documentation to compile the proxy using a sqlite3 database. I add the proxy to zabbix under Administration-DM-Proxies. The zabbix server "sees" the proxy because the "last seen" field is always under 60s. However when I assign a colo host to the proxy I stop receiving data from it. The colo host's zabbix_agentd.log file says this: 29343:20100622:124847 Timeout while answering request 29343:20100622:124847 Getting list of active checks failed. Will retry after 60 seconds The zabbix_proxy.log says this. 2041:20100622:123131.760 Deleted 0 records from history [0.000994 seconds] 2028:20100622:124131.671 Error while receiving answer from server [ZBX_TCP_READ() failed I also am unable to receive any SNMP data which is more important to me than the zabbix agent data.   We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. • What DBus signal is sent on system suspend?

  Hello, I need to detect when a machine is going to sleep in Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 13. Both use UPower, so I've been looking on the "org.freedesktop.UPower" DBus bus for such signals. I've been listening for the "sleeping" signal on the UPower bus with the following command: dbus-monitor --system "type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.UPower',member='Sleeping'" When I sleep the machine (either by closing the lid, selecting "shutdown - suspend" or sending a DBus message) I don't see a "sleeping" event. I notice that the "Sleeping" event is sent when the "org.freedesktop.UPower.AboutToSleep" method is invoked. I can do this manually by calling: dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.AboutToSleep And I notice the "sleeping" signal is fired. My understanding is that anything that sleeps the PC must send the "AboutToSleep" signal before hand. It doesn't seem like this is happening. I've tried these steps on both Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 9.10 and I see the same results. Can anyone explain what's happening or provide me with an alternative DBus signal to listen for? • Cacti not working for SNMP data sources

  I installed packages cacti and snmpd on a Debian server. I'm able to display common graphs in Cacti (such as memory usage, load average, logged in users, etc) using the data templates listed as Unix. Now I want to replace these graphs with new ones using SNMP data sources, because I see there is also CPU usage and because it's not excluded I have to manage multiple hosts in the future. So, I installed snmpd on the machine and left the snmpd.conf as it is. In Cacti, I created three new data sources from SNMP templates for 127.0.0.1 host: ucd/net - CPU Usage - Nice ucd/net - CPU Usage - System ucd/net - CPU Usage - User Then I created a new graph from template ucd/net - CPU Usage, and select the three data sources in the Graph Item Fields section. Graph is now enabled and running, but empty. No data have been collected. • How to restrict file system when logged into terminal services

  What I need to accomplish: With one login, when user is physically in the building I need them to see everything. When they are using terminal services with same login they should not be able to see the file system on the network. I can lock down the PC running terminal services as that is its only use. Details: Windows/2003 Server with terminal services. One login for a user (e.g., johndoe). When johndoe logs into the network at his desk in the office, he can see the network files according to group policy. When johndoe logs into terminal services from outside the building, we do not want to allow him see the network. Using 2x to do a published app, but that app has a "feature" that allows user to see network. Published application on termina services (only) is a document management system that is tied to windows login, so I can't give them two logins. With one login, when they are in the building I need them to see everything. When they are using terminal services they should not be able to see the network. I can lock down the PC running terminal services as that is its only use.

• Put one monitor of a dual monitor windows system into standby

  Standby not Disabled! When running 2 monitors on windows 7 or Windows XP, I would like to be able to put one of the monitors at a time into standby. The method can be manual. When running 2 monitors , the second monitor is not always needed, shutting off the monitors own power switch will turn off the monitor, that does work Ok. Problems with that are , the delay with the monitor logo at turn on, and the power switch is not very accessable, and the switch might not live forever turning it on and off so many times. Using disable methods like devcon, WIN-P and Display, causes all the windows to properly move to the other monitor. While that is what a person would want to happen so they can get hold of the windows, that is not what I want to happen, and some things on the other monitor have to be re-arranged after a re-enable. By putting it into standby mode, nothing changes other than the monitor going into standby. Disconnecting the DVI cable still can cause the system to (properly) shift all the windows over to the one monitor, just like any of the disable methods do. That makes a mess of the windows, and is so unacceptable, that I would prefer to leave the monitor on, wasting power and the hardware, when it could easily go into standby for some time. For both monitors I am using a "MonitorOff" program that puts both monitors into standby, but I can not find a utility that will put only ONE monitor into standby for the windows system. If someone comes along and suggests "ultramon" you must know for a fact that it will put One of either of the monitors into actual standby. And it does not really suit me to use ultramon, I tested it (it was nice) and I did not feel that it was a program I wanted. The 2 monitors are running off of an ATI 4890 card, they are both hooked up DVI-I, the OS is both Windows 7 (primary) and Windows XP. In addition it would also be interesting to have seperate standby activity timers, and follow mouse kind of standby changes, but any manuel method , shortcut, batch , tray, or gadget kind of operation would be a good start.

• Force database read to master if slave data is stale

  I previously asked a specific question about this database replication for new user signup to which I got an answer, but I want to ask this in the more general sense. I have a database setup in which I am using a master/slave combination. I am using the slaves for load balancing (the data itself is partitioned/sharded across multiple databases, but each database has X slaves for load balancing). Let's say I write some data to the master. Now I do a subsequent read which hits a slave, but the slave has not yet caught up to the master. Is there a way (which can be done quickly since it will happen frequently) to determine if the data is stale in the slave so I can then route to the master? In my previous question, it was suggested to do simultaneous writes to the cache and the database. This solution seems practical, but there is still a chance that the data may have been removed from the cache but not yet updated in the slave. A possible solution is to ensure the cache is big enough (based on the typical application load) so the data will not be evicted within the time frame it takes to replicate the data. This seems like it may be feasible. Can anyone provide additional insight into this question? Thanks!

• AMD FX8350 CPU - CoolerMaster Silencio 650 Case - New Water Cooling System

  Lately after a use of 6 months of my AMD FX8350 CPU I'm experiencing high temperatures and loud noise coming from the CPU fan(I set that in order to keep it cooler). I decided to replace the stock fan with a water cooling system in order to keep my CPU quite and cool and add one or two more case fans too. Here is my case's airflow diagram: http://www.coolermaster.com/microsite/silencio_650/Airflow.html My configuration now is: 2x120mm intake front(stock with case) 1x120mm exhaust rear(stock with case) 1 CPU stock I'm planning to buy Corsair Hydro Series H100i(www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h100i-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator in the front of my case(intake) and add an 120mm bottom intake and/or an 140mm top exhaust fan. My CPU lies near the top of the MO. Is it a good practice to have a water-cooling system that takes air in? As you can see here the front of the case is made of aluminum. Can the fresh air go in? Does it even fit? If not, is it wiser to get Corsair Hydro Series H80i (www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h80i-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator on top of my case(exhaust) and keep the front 2x120mm stock and add one more as intake on bottom. If you have any other idea let me know. Thank you. EDIT: The CPU fan running ~3000rpm and temp is around 40~43C on idle and save energy. When temp is going over 55C when running multiple programs and servers on localhost(tomcat, wamp) rpm is around 5500 and loud! • Automatically install driver on headless WHSv1 system

  I have one of the HP Mediasmart Windows Home Server v1 boxes. It's network port appears to have died a few days ago but the system is not giving any other sign of failure: No activity lights activate on either side of the cable when connected to my gigabit switch; when connected to one of my routers 100 megabit ports the lights turn on but it remains unreachable over the network and my router never lists it as among DHCP clients. I bought a USB-ethernet adapter to temporarily get it back online; but the adapter needs a driver to work which I can't install because the system is headless by design (no video out, no PCI/PCIe slots) with admin access only available via the WHS client or remote desktop. Both of those options require network connectivity and are consequently unavailable. I tried copying the drivers to a flash drive; but Windows either didn't look there or none of the drivers provided were suitable (Win8, Win7, or combined XP and Vista). I've been told that a USB WiFi adapter would have the same driver problem.

• Downmix ALL SYSTEM audio to mono - Windows 7

  I'm deaf in one ear and want to use my headphones when playing a game and talking with my friends on Skype/TS/Mumble/etc while also sometimes listening to music. I need ALL my system audio to be downmixed to mono so that my ONE hearing ear gets ALL audio channels instead of split stereo audio. No, none of the other similar questions on superuser have a solution. My headphone properties does not have a 'Mono' option, I don't have a 'Headphone Virtualization' option, and my Realtek HD audio driver software doesn't have these options either (driver was updated 11/14/2012). Don't even talk about setting the balance of one side of the headphones to 0. You're not paying attention if you suggest that. JACK and Virtual Audio Cable didn't work. It's possible I configured them wrong, but I followed the steps I found in related questions and still got split stereo out. TL;DR I need a viable, working, software solution (I say software because I have a USB headset) for forcing ALL system audio to mono so that I can hear literally everything through the one earpiece. • How to deduplicate 40TB of data?

  I've inherited a research cluster with ~40TB of data across three filesystems. The data stretches back almost 15 years, and there are most likely a good amount of duplicates as researchers copy each others data for different reasons and then just hang on to the copies. I know about de-duping tools like fdupes and rmlint. I'm trying to find one that will work on such a large dataset. I don't care if it takes weeks (or maybe even months) to crawl all the data - I'll probably throttle it anyway to go easy on the filesystems. But I need to find a tool that's either somehow super efficient with RAM, or can store all the intermediary data it needs in files rather than RAM. I'm assuming that my RAM (64GB) will be exhausted if I crawl through all this data as one set. I'm experimenting with fdupes now on a 900GB tree. It's 25% of the way through and RAM usage has been slowly creeping up the whole time, now it's at 700MB. Or, is there a way to direct a process to use disk-mapped RAM so there's much more available and it doesn't use system RAM? I'm running CentOS 6.

• windows 7: Event 55 The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable

  Here is a real bad one! Windows 7 RTM with SP1 installed [Version 6.1.7601]. Recently tried to delete some folder on my hard drive and Windows prompted "Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable", and at the same time placed an Event 55 describing "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on \Device\HarddiskVolume2." Ran chkdsk, first with /f option, then with /r option. Result in both cases was: no errors found, 0 bad sectors. No problems chkdsk found at all! Went through StackExchange, Google and spent over 6 hours on this. Still cannot figure out the problem. Re-installing/Re-Formatting is not an option! What did I try: Hotfix - Windows6.1-KB982927-x64.msu - gave me an error about incompatibility with my computer, however it totally matches my system. CRC of hotfix was ok. Windows Repair Console found startup errors and fixed those, but this didn't help an issue, even by running chkdsk c: /R from it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246026 does not promise anything good. sfc /scannow does not help too. Replaced hard drive by cloning an old one using True Image, repeated all steps above. At the same time, some minor glitches started to appear in my Windows, like side panel and notification area settings are getting reset. Goal is to delete the folder and get rid of Event 55. Sounds like NTFS bug. Please help. This is completely ridiculous.

• Oracle 10g for Windows does not start up on system boot

  We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. Right now I have a horrible hack where I've created a Scheduled Task to run oradim -startup -sid ORCL when the Administrator account logs on, and set the VM to auto-logon. I'd still like to work out why it's not working.

• How can I recover my system after running 'mkfs' on the system partition?

  I am not a Linux user, and was doing some homework, I blindly typed sudo mkfs ext3 dev/sda2 (I had Ubuntu as Windows installation). I've done few more things, and turned Ubuntu off to switch on Windows back. No operating system installed - this is the message I'm getting. I plugged my HDD onto another computer and all my files are still there.
