• Simplifying Testing through design considerations while utilizing dependency injection

  We are a few months into a green-field project to rework the Logic and Business layers of our product. By utilizing MEF (dependency injection) we have achieved high levels of code coverage and I believe that we have a pretty solid product. As we have been working through some of the more complex logic I have found it increasingly difficult to unit test. We are utilizing the CompositionContainer to query for types required by these complex algorithms. My unit tests are sometimes difficult to follow due to the lengthy mock object setup process that must take place, just right, to allow for certain circumstances to be verified. My unit tests often take me longer to write than the code that I'm trying to test. I realize this is not only an issue with dependency injection but with design as a whole. Is poor method design or lack of composition to blame for my overly complex tests? I've tried base classing tests, creating commonly used mock objects and ensuring that I utilize the container as much as possible to ease this issue but my tests always end up quite complex and hard to debug. What are some tips that you've seen to keep such tests concise, readable, and effective?

• Managing Instances in Python

  Hello, I am new to Python and this is my first time asking a stackOverflow question, but a long time reader. I am working on a simple card based game but am having trouble managing instances of my Hand class. If you look below you can see that the hand class is a simple container for cards(which are just int values) and each Player class contains a hand class. However, whenever I create multiple instances of my Player class they all seem to manipulate a single instance of the Hand class. From my experience in C and Java it seems that I am somehow making my Hand class static. If anyone could help with this problem I would appreciate it greatly. • Getting a key in the ActionScript Dictionary

  Hello, I am using a Dictionary in ActionScript as a queue, sort of, still reading most of the time as an associative container, but I need one time to make a loop to run through the whole dictionary, such as for (var key:String in queue) . Inside this for loop I perform some actions on an element and then call delete on that key. My issue is that I would like to wait for an Event before fetching the next element in this queue. Basically my for loop runs too fast. I would like to fetch the next key all the time, but I know there is no built in method. A solution I thought is to add a break to the loop, as the for.. in will automatically fetch the next key, but it would be a loop which always executes one time, simply to fetch the next key. This sounds a bit counter intuitive. I hope my problem makes sense and I really look for some better ideas than what I currently have. Thanks for your help! Rudy

• Why can't I wrap the ServletRequest when trying to capture JSP Output

  I am trying to dispatch in a servlet request handler to the JSP processor and capture the content of it. I am providing wrapper instances for the ServletRequest and ServletResponse, they implement the corresponding HTTPServletRequest/-Response interfaces, so they should be drop-in replacements. All methods are currently passed to the original Servlet Request object (I am planning to modify some of them soon). Additionally I have introduced some new methods. (If you want to see the code: http://code.google.com/p/gloudy/source/browse/trunk/gloudyPortal/src/java/org/gloudy/gloudlet/impl/RenderResponseImpl.java) The HttpServletResponse uses it's own output streams to capture the output. When I try to call request.getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/views/test.jsp").include(request, response); With my request and response wrappers the method returns and no content has been captured. When I tried to pass the original request object it worked! But that's not what I need in the long run... request.getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/views/test.jsp").include(request.getServletRequest(), response); This works. getservletRequest() returns the original Request, given by the servlet container. Does anyone know why this is not working with my wrappers?

  Source: http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=11 Quick overview: Take a 20x20 grid of numbers and compute the largest product of 4 pairs of numbers in either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. My current approach is to divide the 20x20 grid up into single rows and single columns and go from there with a much more manageable grid. The code I'm using to divide the rows into rows is void fillRows ( string::const_iterator& fieldIter, list<int>& rowElements, vector<list<int>>& rows ) { int count(0); for( ; fieldIter < field.end(); ++fieldIter ) { if(isdigit(field[*fieldIter])) { rowElements.push_back(toInt(field[*fieldIter])); ++count; } if(count == 40) { rows.push_back(rowElements); count = 0; rowElements.clear(); } } } Short explanation: I have the field set as static const std::string field and I am filling a vector with lists of rows. Why a list? Because the queue doesn't have a clear function. Also practice using STL container lists and not ones I write myself. However, this thing isn't working. Oftentimes I see it omitting a character( function toInt parses the const char as int ) and I end up with 18 rows, two rows short of the 20x20 grid. The length of the rows seem good. Rows: 18 RowElements[0]: 40 (instead of pairs I saved each number individually. Will fix that later) What am I doing wrong?

• Using SiteMesh with RequestDispatcher's forward()

  I'm attempting to integrate SiteMesh into a legacy application using Tomcat 5 as my a container. I have a main.jsp that I'm decorating with a simple decorator. In decorators.xml, I've just got one decorator defined: <decorators defaultdir="/decorators"> <decorator name="layout-main" page="layout-main.jsp"> <pattern>/jsp/main.jsp</pattern> </decorator> </decorators> This decorator works if I manually go to http://example.com/my-webapp/jsp/main.jsp. However, there are a few places where a servlet, instead of doing a redirect to a jsp, does a forward: getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/jsp/main.jsp").forward(request, response); This means that the URL remains at something like http://example.com/my-webapp/servlet/MyServlet instead of the jsp file and is therefore not being decorated, I presume since it doesn't match the pattern in decorators.xml. I can't do a <pattern>/*</pattern> because there are other jsps that do not need to be decorated by layout-main.jsp. I can't do a <pattern>/servlet/MyServlet*</pattern> because MyServlet may forward to main.jsp sometimes and perhaps error.jsp at other times. Is there a way to work around this without expansive changes to how the servlets work? Since it's a legacy app I don't have as much freedom to change things, so I'm hoping for something configuration-wise that will fix this. SiteMesh's documentation really isn't that great. I've been working mostly off the example application that comes with the distribution. I really like SiteMesh, and am hoping I can get it to work in this case.

• [Cocoa] Core Animation with an NSView and subviews

  I've subclassed NSView to create a 'container' view (which I've called TRTransitionView) which is being used to house two subviews. At the click of a button, I want to transition one subview out of the parent view and transition the other in, using the Core Animation transition type: kCATransitionPush. For the most part, I have this working as you'd expect (here's a basic test project I threw together). The issue I'm seeing relates to resizing my window and then toggling between my two views. After resizing a window, my subviews will appear at seemingly random locations within my TRTransitionView. Additionally, it appears as if the TRTransitionView hasn't stretched correctly and is clipping the contents of its subviews. Ideally, I would like subviews anchored to the top-left of their parent view at all times, and to also grow to expand the size of the parent view. The second issue relates to an NSTableView I've placed in my first subview. When my window is resized, and my TRTransitionView resizes to match its new dimensions, my TableView seems to resize its content quite awkwardly (the entire table seems to jolt around) and the newly expanded space that the table now occupies seems to 'flash' (as if in the process of being animated). Extremely difficult to describe, but is there any way to stop this?   I implemented Dynamic DataSource Routing for Spring+Hibernate according to this article. I have several databases with same structure and I need to select which db will run each specific query. Everything works fine on localhost, but I am worrying about how this will hold up in real web site environment. Will CustomerContextHolder.setCustomerType() changes be visible to other web users? My controllers have synchronizeOnSession=true. • Ruby array, javascript and json issue

  Hey all, I am unable to get a highcharts plugin to render a chart in a rails application: http://github.com/loudpixel/highcharts-rails I believe it has something to do with the sql queries to the database placed in a ruby array, which the javascript is unable to intepret. Also, if I hard code values (e.g. :y = 1), it will render the chart properly. However, any database query will not render the chart properly. So I'm not sure exactly what the issue is.   I'm trying to figure out syntax that supports unboxing an integral type (short/int/long) to its intrinsic type, when the type itself is unknown. Here is a completely contrived example that demonstrates the concept: // Just a simple container that returns values as objects struct DataStruct { public short ShortVale; public int IntValue; public long LongValue; public object GetBoxedShortValue() { return LongValue; } public object GetBoxedIntValue() { return LongValue; } public object GetBoxedLongValue() { return LongValue; } } static void Main( string[] args ) { DataStruct data; // Initialize data - any value will do data.LongValue = data.IntValue = data.ShortVale = 42; DataStruct newData; // This works if you know the type you are expecting! newData.ShortVale = (short)data.GetBoxedShortValue(); newData.IntValue = (int)data.GetBoxedIntValue(); newData.LongValue = (long)data.GetBoxedLongValue(); // But what about when you don't know? newData.ShortVale = data.GetBoxedShortValue(); // error newData.IntValue = data.GetBoxedIntValue(); // error newData.LongValue = data.GetBoxedLongValue(); // error } In each case, the integral types are consistent, so there should be some form of syntax that says "the object contains a simple type of X, return that as X (even though I don't know what X is)". Because the objects ultimately come from the same source, there really can't be a mismatch (short != long). • pluto or jetspeed on google app engine?

  I am trying to build something "portlet server"-ish on the google app engine. (as open source) I'd like to use the JSR168/286 standards, but I think that the restrictions of the app engine will make it somewhere between tricky and impossible. Has anyone tried to run jetspeed or an application that uses pluto internally on the google app engine? Based on my current knowledge of portlets and the google app engine I'm anticipating these problems: A war file with portlets is from the deployment standpoint more or less a complete webapp (yes, I know that it doesn't really work without a portal server). The war file may contain it's own web.xml etc. This makes deployment on the app engine rather difficult, because the apps are not visible to each other, so all portlet containing archives need to be included in the war file of the deployed "app engine based portal server". The "portlets" are (at least in liferay) started as permanent servlet processes, based on their portlet.xmls and web.xmls which is located in the same spot for every portlet archive that is loaded. I think this may be problematic in the app engine, because everything is in one big "web app", so it may be tricky to access the portlet.xmls from each archive. This prevents a 100% compatibility in my opinion. Is here anyone who has any experience with the combination of portlets and the app engine? Do you think it's feasible to modify jetspeed, pluto or any other portlet container to be able to run it on the app engine?

• Why is Chrome miscalculating jQuery submenu dimensions?

  I'm trying to implement this dropdown menu with flyouts: http://jsfiddle.net/chunkymonkey/fr6x4/ In Chrome certain categories can be expanded to show their subcategories while others show nothing when opened up. For example: Alternative Rock can be expanded to show its multiple subcategories . . . BUT . . . World Music, which has as many subcategories, shows no subcategories when expanded.   I am trying to get my Blackberry application to display a custom modal dialog, and have the opening thread wait until the user closes the dialog screen. final Screen dialog = new FullScreen(); ...// Fields are added to dialog Application.getApplication().invokeAndWait(new Runnable() { public void run() { Application.getUiApplication().pushModalScreen(dialog); } }); This is throwing an Exception which says "pushModalScreen called by a non-event thread" despite the fact that I am using invokeAndWait to call pushModalScreen from the event thread. Any ideas about what the real problem is? • Java: Initializing a public static field in superclass that needs a different value in every subclas

  Good evening, I am developing a set of Java classes so that a container class Box contains a List of a contained class Widget. A Widget needs to be able to specify relationships with other Widgets. I figured a good way to do this would be to do something like this: public abstract class Widget { public static class WidgetID { // implementation stolen from Google's GWT private static int nextHashCode; private final int index; public WidgetID() { index = ++nextHashCode; } public final int hashCode() { return index; } } public abstract WidgetID getWidgetID(); } so sublcasses of Widget could: public class BlueWidget extends Widget { public static final WidgetID WIDGETID = new WidgetID(); @Override public WidgetID getWidgetID() { return WIDGETID; } } Now, BlueWidget can do getBox().addWidgetRelationship(RelationshipTypes.SomeType, RedWidget.WIDGETID, and Box can iterate through it's list comparing the second parameter to iter.next().getWidgetID(). Now, all this works great so far. What I'm trying to do is keep from having to declare the public static final WidgetID WIDGETID in all the subclasses and implement it instead in the parent Widget class. The problem is, if I move that line of code into Widget, then every instance of a subclass of Widget appears to get the same static final WidgetID for their Subclassname.WIDGETID. However, making it non-static means I can no longer even call Subclassname.WIDGETID. So: how do I create a static WidgetID in the parent Widget class while ensuring it is different for every instance of Widget and subclasses of Widget? Or am I using the wrong tool for the job here? • Suggested (simple) approach for drawing large numbers of visual elements in WPF?

  I'm writing an interface that features a large (~50000px width) "canvas"-type area that is used to display a lot of data in a fairly novel way. This involves lots of lines, rectangles, and text. The user can scroll around to explore the entire canvas. At the moment I'm just using a standard Canvas panel with various Shapes placed on it. This is nice and easy to do: construct a shape, assign some coordinates, and attach it to the Canvas. Unfortunately, it's pretty slow (to construct the children, not to do the actual rendering). I've looked into some alternatives, it's a bit intimidating. I don't need anything fancy - just the ability to efficiently construct and place objects in a coordinate plane. If all I get are lines, colored rectangles, and text, I'll be happy. Do I need Geometry instances inside of Geometry Groups inside of GeometryDrawings inside of some Panel container? Note: I'd like to include text and graphics (i.e. colored rectangles) in the same space, if possible.

• Ajax heavy JS apps using excessive amounts of memory over time.

  I seem to have some pretty large memory leaks in an app that I am working on. The app itself is not very complex. Every 15 seconds, the page requests approx 40kb of JSON from the server, and draws a table on the page using it. It is cheaper to draw the table over because the data is usually always new. I am attaching a few events to the table, approx 5 per line, 30 lines in the table. I used jQuery's .html() method to put the new html into the container and overwrite the existing. I do this specifically so that jQuery's special cleanup functions go in and attempt to detach all events on the elements in the element that it is overwriting. I then also delete the large variables of html once they are sent to the DOM using delete my_var. I have checked for circular references and attached events that are never cleared a few times, but never REALLY dug into it. I was wondering if someone could give me a few pointers on how to optimize a very heavy app like this. I just picked up "High Performance Javascript" by Nicholas Zakas, but didn't have much time to get into it yet. To give an idea on how much memory this is using, after 4~ hours, it is using about 420,000k on chrome, and much more on Firefox or IE. Thanks!

• Python and Unicode: How everything should be Unicode

  Forgive if this a long a question: I have been programming in Python for around six months. Self taught, starting with the Python tutorial and then SO and then just using Google for stuff. Here is the sad part: No one told me all strings should be Unicode. No, I am not lying or making this up, but where does the tutorial mention it? And most examples also I see just make use of byte strings, instead of Unicode strings. I was just browsing and came across this question on SO, which says how every string in Python should be a Unicode string. This pretty much made me cry! I read that every string in Python 3.0 is Unicode by default, so my questions are for 2.x: Should I do a: print u'Some text' or just print 'Text' ? Everything should be Unicode, does this mean, like say I have a tuple: t = ('First', 'Second'), it should be t = (u'First', u'Second')? I read that I can do a from __future__ import unicode_literals and then every string will be a Unicode string, but should I do this inside a container also? When reading/ writing to a file, I should use the codecs module. Right? Or should I just use the standard way or reading/ writing and encode or decode where required? If I get the string from say raw_input(), should I convert that to Unicode also? What is the common approach to handling all of the above issues in 2.x? The from __future__ import unicode_literals statement? Sorry for being a such a noob, but this changes what I have been doing for a long time and so clearly I am confused.

• Browser dependent problem rendering WMD with Showdown.js?

  This should be easy (at least no one else seems to be having a similar problem), but I can't see where it is breaking. I'm storing Markdown'ed text in a database that is entered on a page in my app. The text is entered using WMD and the live preview looks correct. On another page, I'm retrieving the markdown text and using Showdown.js to convert it back to HTML client-side for display. Let's say I have this text: The quick **brown** fox jumped over the *lazy* dogs. 1. one 1. two 4. three 17. four I'm using this snippet of Javascript in my jQuery document ready event to convert it: var sd = new Attacklab.showdown.converter(); $(".ClassOfThingsIWantConverted").each(function() { this.innerHTML = sd.makeHtml($(this).html()); } I suspect this is where my problem is, but it almost works. In FireFox, I get what I expected: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs. one two three four But in IE (7 and 6), I get this: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs. 1. one 1. two 4. three 17. four So apparently, IE is stripping the breaks in my markdown code and just converting them to spaces. When I do a view source of the original code (prior to the script running), the breaks are there inside the container DIV. What am I doing wrong? UPDATE It is caused by the IE innerHTML/innerText "quirk" and I should have mentioned before that this one on an ASP.Net page using data bound controls - there are obviously a lot of different workarounds otherwise.

• Which tools to use and how to find file descriptors leaking from Glassfish?

  We release new code to production every week and Glassfish hasn't had any problems. This weekend we had to move racks at our hosting provider. There were not any code changes (they just powered off, moved, re-racked and powered on) but we're on a new network infrastructure and suddenly we're leaking file descriptors like a sieve. So I'm guessing there is some sort of connection attempting to be made which now fails due to a network change. I'm running Glassfish v2ur2-b04/AS9.1_02 on RHEL4 with an embedded IMQ instance. I have no idea what these sockets are. I've undeployed my application so there is only a plain Glassfish instance running and I still see it leaking 12 file descriptors a minute. So I think this leak is in Glassfish or potentially IMQ. What approach should I take to tracking down these sockets of unknown protocol?
