• Come up with a real-world problem in which only the best solution will do (a problem from Introduction to algorithms) [closed]

  EDITED (I realized that the question certainly needs a context) The problem 1.1-5 in the book of Thomas Cormen et al Introduction to algorithms is: "Come up with a real-world problem in which only the best solution will do. Then come up with one in which a solution that is “approximately” the best is good enough." I'm interested in its first statement. And (from my understanding) it is asked to name a real-world problem where only the exact solution will work as opposed to a real-world problem where good-enough solution will be ok. So what is the difference between the exact and good enough solution. Consider some physics problem for example the simulation of the fulid flow in the permeable medium. To make this simulation happen some simplyfing assumptions have to be made when deriving a mathematical model. Otherwise the model becomes at least complex and unsolvable. Virtually any particle in the universe has its influence on the fluid flow. But not all particles are equal. Those that form the permeable medium are much more influental than the ones located light years away. Then when the mathematical model needs to be solved an exact solution can rarely be found unless the mathematical model is simple enough (wich probably means the model isn't close to reality). We take an approximate numerical method and after hours of coding and days of verification come up with the program or algorithm which is a solution. And if the model and an algorithm give results close to a real problem by some degree that is good enough soultion. Its worth noting the difference between exact solution algorithm and exact computation result. When considering real-world problems and real-world computation machines I believe all physical problems solutions where any calculations are taken can not be exact because universal physical constants are represented approximately in the computer. Any numbers are represented with the limited precision, at least limited by amount of memory available to computing machine. I can imagine plenty of problems where good-enough, good to some degree solution will work, like train scheduling, automated trading, satellite orbit calculation, health care expert systems. In that cases exact solutions can't be derived due to constraints on computation time, limitations in computer memory or due to the nature of problems. I googled this question and like what this guy suggests: there're kinds of mathematical problems that need exact solutions (little note here: because the question is taken from the book "Introduction to algorithms" the term "solution" means an algorithm or a program, which in this case gives exact answer on each input). But that's probably more of theoretical interest. So I would like to narrow down the question to: What are the real-world practical problems where only the best (exact) solution algorithm or program will do (but not the good-enough solution)? There are problems like breaking of cryptographic ciphers where only exact solution matters in practice and again in practice the process of deciphering without knowing a secret should take reasonable amount of time. Returning to the original question this is the problem where good-enough (fast-enough) solution will do there's no practical need in instant crack though it's desired. So the quality of "best" can be understood in any sense: exact, fastest, requiring least memory, having minimal possible network traffic etc. And still I want this question to be theoretical if possible. In a sense that there may be example of computer X that has limited resource R of amount Y where the best solution to problem P is the one that takes not more than available Y for inputs of size N*Y. But that's the problem of finding solution for P on computer X which is... well, good enough. My final thought that we live in a world where it is required from programming solutions to practical purposes to be good enough. In rare cases really very very good but still not the best ones. Isn't it? :) If it's not can you provide an example? Or can you name any such unsolved problem of practical interest?

• I.T. Chargeback : Core to Cloud Computing

  Contributed by Mark McGill Consolidation and Virtualization have been widely adopted over the years to help deliver benefits such as increased server utilization, greater agility and lower cost to the I.T. organization. These are key enablers of cloud, but in themselves they do not provide a complete cloud solution. Building a true enterprise private cloud involves moving from an admin driven world, where the I.T. department is ultimately responsible for the provisioning of servers, databases, middleware and applications, to a world where the consumers of I.T. resources can provision their infrastructure, platforms and even complete application stacks on demand. Switching from an admin-driven provisioning model to a user-driven model creates some challenges. How do you ensure that users provisioning resources will not provision more than they need? How do you encourage users to return resources when they have finished with them so that others can use them? While chargeback has existed as a concept for many years (especially in mainframe environments), it is the move to this self-service model that has created a need for a new breed of chargeback applications for cloud. Enabling self-service without some form of chargeback is like opening a shop where all of the goods are free. A successful chargeback solution will be able to allocate the costs of shared I.T. infrastructure based on the relative consumption by the users. Doing this creates transparency between the I.T. department and the consumers of I.T. When users are able to understand how their consumption translates to cost they are much more likely to be prudent when it comes to their use of I.T. resources. This also gives them control of their I.T. costs, as moderate usage will translate to a lower charge at the end of the month. Implementing Chargeback successfully create a win-win situation for I.T. and the consumers. Chargeback can help to ensure that I.T. resources are used for activities that deliver business value. It also improves the overall utilization of I.T. infrastructure as I.T. resources that are not needed are not left running idle. Enterprise Manager 12c provides an integrated metering and chargeback solution for Enterprise Manager Targets. This solution is built on top of the rich configuration and utilization information already available in Enterprise Manager. It provides metering not just for virtual machines, but also for physical hosts, databases and middleware. Enterprise Manager 12c provides metering based on the utilization and configuration of the following types of Enterprise Manager Target: Oracle VM Host Oracle Database Oracle WebLogic Server Using Enterprise Manager Chargeback, administrators are able to create a set of Charge Plans that are used to attach prices to the various metered resources. These plans can contain fixed costs (eg. $10/month/database), configuration based costs (eg. $10/month if OS is Windows) and utilization based costs (eg. $0.05/GB of Memory/hour) The self-service user provisioning these resources is then able to view a report that details their usage and helps them understand how this usage translates into cost. Armed with this information, the user is able to determine if the resources are delivering adequate business value based on what is being charged. Figure 1: Chargeback in Self-Service Portal Enterprise Manager 12c provides a variety of additional interfaces into this data. The administrator can access summary and trending reports. Summary reports allow the administrator to drill-down through the cost center hierarchy to identify, for example, the top resource consumers across the organization. Figure 2: Charge Summary Report Trending reports can be used for I.T. planning and budgeting as they show utilization and charge trends over a period of time. Figure 3: CPU Trend Report We also provide chargeback reports through BI Publisher. This provides a way for users who do not have an Enterprise Manager login (such as Line of Business managers) to view charge and usage information. • ADF page security - the untold password rule

  I'm kinda new to Oracle ADF. So, in this blog post I'm going to share something with you that I faced (and recovered from) recently. Initially I thought if I should at all put a blog post on this, because it's totally simple. Still, simplicity is a relative term. So without wasting further time, let's kick off.    I was exploring the ADF security aspect to secure a page through html basic authentication. The idea is very simple and the credential store etc. come into picture. But I was not able to run a successful test of this phenomenally simple thing even after trying for over 30 minutes. This is what I did.   I created a simple jsf page and put a panel in it. And I put a simple el to show the current user name.  Next I created a user that I should test with. I named the password as myuser, just to keep it simple. Then I created an enterprise role and mapped the user that I just created. Then I created an application role and mapped the enterprise role to it. Then I mapped the resource, the simple jsf page in this case, to this application role. This way, only users with the given application role can only access this page (as if you didn't know this duh!).  Of course, I had to create the page definition for the page before I could map it to an application role. What else! done! Then I hit the run menu item and it all went well...   Until... I got this message. I put the correct credentials repeatedly 2-3 times. Still I got the same error. Why? I didn't get any error message during the deployment. nope.  Then, as I said before, I spent over 30 minutes trying different things out, things like mapping only the user(not the role) to the page, changing the context root etc. Nothing worked!  Then of course, I bothered to look at the logs and found this. See the first red line. That says it all. So the problem was with that password. The password must have at least one special character and one digit in it. I think I was misled by the missing password hint/rule and the fact that the deployment didn't fail even if the user was not created properly. Well, yes, I agree that I was fool enough not to look at the logs.  Later I changed the password to something like myuser123# . And it worked. I hope it helped.

  I am using SlimDX with WinForms for a while now, but want to make the switch to WPF now. However, I can't figure out how to get DX10/11 working with WPF. The February release of SlimDX provides a WPF example, which only works with DX 9 though. I found the following solution: http://jmorrill.hjtcentral.com/Home/tabid/428/EntryId/437/Direct3D-10-11-Direct2D-in-WPF.aspx but can't get it to work with SlimDX. My main problem is the shared resource handle as I don't know how to retrieve the shared handle from a SlimDX texture. I can't find any information to this topic. I've created a new version by Design Data Model Add Model Version in Xcode. The difference between versions is a single relationship that's been changed from to a one to many. I've made my changes to the model, then saved. I've made a new Mapping Model that has the old model as a source and new model as a destination. I've ensured all Mapping Models and Data Models and are being compiled and all are copied to the Resource folder of my app bundle. I've switched on migrations by passing in a dictionary with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption key as [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] when adding the Persistent Store. Rather than merging all models in the bundle, I've specified the two models I want to use (model 1 and the new version of model 2) and merged them using modelByMergingModels: The Problem No matter what I do to migrate, I get the error message: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model." What I've Tried I clean after every single build. I've tried various combinations of having only the model I'm migrating to in Resources, being compiled, or both. Since the error message implies it can't find the source model for my migration, I've tried having every version of the model in both the Resources folder and being compiled. I've made sure I'm not making a really basic error by switching back to the original version of my data model. The app runs fine. I've deleted the Mapping Model and the new version of the model, cleaned, then recreated both. I've tried making a different change in the new model - deleting an entity instead. I'm at my wits end. I can't help but think I've made a huge mistake somewhere that I'm not seeing. Any ideas?

• motion computation from video using pyglet in python

  Hi, I am writing a simple motion detection program but i want it to be cross platform so im using python and the pyglet library since it provides a simple way to load videos in different formats (specially wmv and mpeg). So far i have the code given below which loads the movie and plays it in a window. • Struggling running ASP MVC2 on IIS6.0

  Hi I could use a little Help using MVC2 on an IIS6.0 Its an MVC2 RC2 [.NET 3.5]. I followed the famous Haacked Tutorial, created a virtual folder, created a Default.aspx Website for my Project, put everything to my virtual folder. The routing is modified, using wildcard mapping [anyway its not running without, too], according to the Tutorial. I also checked, that all Webservices are running [asp.net 2 / asp.net 4 / active server pages]. The routing is working fine on my development machine, even checked it using Haacks routing debugger ... [http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/13/url-routing-debugger.aspx] Seems fine so far, but I get only 404 - not found errors. Is there something I might be missing ? • Why can't I resolve ambiguity with Android.OS.Environment?

  I'm trying to use Environment.(...) in my Xamarin app. It complains that "Environment is an ambiguous reference between System.Environment and Android.OS.Environment" I can fix it by using the fully qualified name System.Environment.(...) but not with Android.OS.Environment.(...). • apache htaccess rewrite rules make redirection loop

  Hi guys, Have a very strange problem with Apache .htaccess URL Rewriting and Redirection. Here's my setup: I have a zend application with a single point of entry (index.php) directly under my apache document root (call this the "public" folder). I also have all other public files (images, js, css, etc.) under the public folder. Here, I also have a wordpress blog under the "blog" folder. There's an empty test folder too The Problem When I go to mydomain.com/blog, I get redirected to http://www.theredpin.com/blog (correctly), then to http://www.theredpin.com/blog/ (just with an extra / at end), finally to http://theredpin.com/blog/ -- and we're back where we started. The loop continues. What I don't understand is why would wordpress try to remove the www? I'm guessing it's wordpress because my empty test folder acts just fine! PLEASE HELP. I"M REALLY DESPERATE :( Thank you very much Other things that happen: When I go to mydomain.com, i correctly get redirected to www.mydomain.com When I go to www.mydomain.com, i correctly stay where I am When I go to www.mydomain.com/test or mydomain.com/test, behaviour is correct.   So I would like to move my Storyboards into a ResourceDictionary file and I am having trouble doing that. I have looked everywhere and it involves making the "Resource" sharable but how do I do that in silverlight when there is no x:Shared attribute.   Hi, As part of our application we are using apache's xerces jaxp parser. When we deploy the application on weblogic9.2, we are getting the following error. org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'org.apache.cxf.wsdl.WSDLManager' defined in class path resource [META-INF/cxf/cxf.xml]: Instantiation of bean failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.BeanInstantiationException: Could not instantiate bean class [org.apache.cxf.wsdl11.WSDLManagerImpl]: Constructor threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.ClassCastException: org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl As per our analysis, i)The weblogic is trying to to load its own DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl which is present in weblogic.jar instead of apache's xerces. We tried the following to force the weblogic to load DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl from xerces i)we have added the following tag into weblogic.xml true ii)we have put latest versions of xalan in jre/lib/endorced folder. this didnt resolve our problem. ii) we have added entries in weblogic-application.xml webapp.encoding.default UTF-8 javax.jws. org.apache.xerces. org.apache.xerces.jaxp.* ii)Added the following entry in weblogic-application.xml <parser-factory> <saxparser-factory>org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl</saxparser-factory> <document-builder-factory>org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl </document-builder-factory> org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl iii)Added jaxp.properties to load DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl from xerces to the jre/lib and started the server.In this case, the weblogic didnt start. iv)Then we started the server first and then copied the jaxp.properties file during the run time when server starts.But no success None of the above worked for us. • JavaMail not sending Subject or From under jetty:run-war

  Has anyone seen JavaMail not sending proper MimeMessages to an SMTP server, depending on how the JVM in started? At the end of the day, I can't send JavaMail SMTP messages with Subject: or From: fields, and it appears other headers are missing, only when running the app as a war. The web project is built with Maven and I'm testing sending JavaMail using a browser and a simple mail.jsp to debug and see different behavior when launching the app with: 1) mvn jetty:run (mail sends fine, with proper Subject and From fields) 2) mvn jetty:run-war (mail sends fine, but missing Subject, From, and other fields) I've meticulously run diff on the (verbose) Maven debug output (-X), and there are zero differences in the runtime dependencies between the two. I've also compared System properties, and they are identical. Something else is happening the jetty:run-war case that changes the way JavaMail behaves. What other stones need turning? Curiously, I've tried a debugger in both situations and found that the javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage instance is getting created differently. The webapp is using Spring to send email picked off of an Apache ActiveMQ queue. When running the app as mvn jetty:run the MimeMessage.contentStream variable is used for message content. When running as mvn jetty:run-war, the MimeMessage.content variable is used for the message contents, and the content = ASCIIUtility.getBytes(is); call removes all of the header data from the parsed content. Since this seemed very odd, and debugging Spring/ActiveMQ is a deep dive, I created a simplified test without any of that infrastructure: just a JSP using mail-1.4.2.jar, yet the same headers are missing. Also of note, these headers are missing when running the WAR file under Tomcat 5.5.27. Tomcat behaves just like Jetty when running the WAR, with the same missing headers. With JavaMail debugging turned on, I clearly see different output.   Trying to call a WCF with a netTcpBinding via Silverlight, I am getting the error: "TCP error code 10013: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions.. This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way while the service is not configured for cross-domain access. You may need to contact the owner of the service to expose a sockets cross-domain policy over HTTP and host the service in the allowed sockets port range 4502-4534." My WCF service is hosted in IIS7, bound to: http://localhost.myserivce.com on port 80 and net.tcp on port 4502 I can see http://localhost.myserivce.com/myservice.svc if I browse to it (my hosts file is pointing this domain to localhost). • ASP.NET MVC in a subfolder (only) on godaddy

  Okay, I have read many of the routing posts concerning putting asp.net mvc on godaddy. However, I have not come to a solution to my current problem. I am trying to publish an ASP.NET MVC application to a subfolder on godaddy. I have upgraded the account to use IIS 7 and I have included the MVC dlls in \bin\ deployment method. However, I suspect that my route is not correct. Currently, my routes are set up with the standard out of the box route: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); } I have a subdomain set up so that it looks like office.domain.com. The subdomain is pointing at a folder "/office/" which is right off the root folder. (There is not an MVC application installed in the root folder). All of my application has been placed in this 'office' folder. When I hover over the links however, the 'office' portion shows up in the link as well. e.g. Hovering over a link to the customer controller, index action yields "office.domain.com/office/Customer" as the target. This link then gets a 404 when I attempt to go to it. What should my route be to fix this? Is there something I have neglected in setting up the subdomain in godaddy? Is this something I just can't do in godaddy's domain management "tool". Do I need to set up a virtual directory for this instead of just a directory? Update: I changed the IIS settings in godaddy to use integrated pipeline mode, per this discussion and I am no longer getting 404 errors. The application worked just fine as suggested it would.

  Most WPF styles I have seen are split up into one very long Theme.xaml file. I want to split mine up for readability so my Theme.xaml looks like this: <ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"> <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="/PresentationFramework.Aero;v3.0.0.0;31bf3856ad364e35;component/themes/aero.normalcolor.xaml"/> <ResourceDictionary Source="Controls/Brushes.xaml"/> <ResourceDictionary Source="Controls/Buttons.xaml"/> ... </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> </ResourceDictionary> The problem is that this solution does not work. I have a default button style which is BasedOn the default Aero style for a button: <Style x:Key="{x:Type Button}" TargetType="{x:Type Button}" BasedOn="{StaticResource {x:Type Button}}"> <Setter Property="FontSize" Value="14"/> ... </Style> If I place all of this in one file it works but as soon as I split it up I get StackOverflow exceptions because it thinks it is BasedOn itself. Is there a way around this? How does WPF add resources when merging resource dictionaries?
