• How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3? [closed]

  This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense. EDIT: OK, I'm aware that the stock answers for these kind of questions cover this one as well. Patches welcome, scratch your itch, we don't work for you and we don't have the time, etc. I actually took a shot at porting this about a year ago, but it was my first time doing anything with Python C extensions, and I failed. My point in writing this was not a plea for somebody to write it, but genuine curiosity: it seems that some much more complicated libraries have been ported to python 3 already, and in the poll for which libraries should be ported, mysqldb is not even nominated! That suggests that maybe (2) is the right answer. UPDATE: I found that there are several new libraries that provide mysql support under Python 3, I just wasn't googling hard enough. That explains everything.

• Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request. • VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. Disclaimer: The patch is "as-is" and the patcher is originally created by Artem S. Tashkinov, and later modified by An_tony. Please refer to the VMware forum in case of questions or problems. There are also patches available for older versions of VMware Player or Workstation.

• What do you feel are characteristics of a mature programmer?

  Hey all. As part of ongoing research that I am conducting, I would like to ask a crowd, that I feel is the most qualified, to answer a question. What does the community feel are characteristics of a mature programmer? I'm not asking the question because I'm looking to hire or anything of that nature. A colleague and I repeatedly hear a trend throughout universities and specifically computer science departments. The students generally ask questions of the form: How can I become a mature programmer? How can I become a world class programmer? What steps should a new programmer take to become more skilled? So, with that, we are conducting research to attempt to identify an optimized path that would allow an introductory programmer to advance to that of a skilled/mature programmer. Now, I understand that there are many "it depends" out there depending on what vertical industry one works in, but I feel we can determine many common characteristics irrespective of the industry. • WiFi problems on several Ubuntu installations

  Okay this is the first time I have ever had to ask a question as usually the Ubuntu community have answered everything already but on this occasion there are many people asking for the answer but not one good solution has become available so far so someone please help or I will have to install Windows on my sons and my girlfriends PCs and that would be a disaster as I am trying to help convince people to move from Windows. I installed 12.04 on three computers on the same day. Dell Inspiron (Works Perfect) Toshiba Satellite Home built Desktop The Dell works perfect but the other two either keep losing connection to the wireless Internet and even when they are connected they stop connecting to web sites, for some reason it searches Google fine but will not connect to web sites when a link is clicked. So far people have recommended in other forums: Removing network manager and installing wicd (didn't solve it) Changing the MTU in the wireless settings (didn't solve it) All sorts of messing about with Firefox settings (this doesn't solve it and even if it did this would leave most average PC users scratching their heads and wishing they had stuck to windows) The problem exists on two very different machines and different wireless cards so I doubt its a driver or hardware issue, also many other Ubuntu users are having the same problem with a vast array of different machines and wireless cards. Can someone please give a good solution to this as its going to turn a lot of people away from Ubuntu if they cannot get this sorted. I would give some PC specs but the two machines are vastly different and the other people complaining of this problem also have very different systems all showing the same problem.

• With Google DFP (Small Business) is it possible to disable AdSense in an Ad Slot on a per-request basis?

  Setup: I run a network of websites that target different hobby niches and have a section dedicated to community classifieds. I serve advertising on these sites through Google DFP for Small Business with AdSense enabled on the slots. Problem: One of the next sites in my network will be targeting the firearms/shooting industry and as such the classifieds section will not comply with the prohibited content guidelines of AdSense regarding the sale (or coordination of sale) of weapons. I work very hard to comply with the guidelines of my partners even if I don't understand/agree with them and after talking with many people have decided that the best option is to disable AdSense serving on that section of that website, while leaving it on for the rest of the network. Solution: Right now my only idea for this is to duplicate all my site's ad slots and tack a "_sensitive" onto the end of each one (eg. header and header_sensitive) conditionally registering ad slots based on whether or not I am in the sensitive section of the sensitive site. My hope however is that there may be a way to accomplish this without duplicating all my ad slots possibly with some sort of options to the GA_googleFillSlot() call that allows me to say "load ads from this slot but do not serve AdSense no matter what."

• 2 year cis degree and in school for computer science what can I do?

  Hi I am 29 and have a recent 2 cis year degree from a community college , an A+ certification , and meager experience with web stuff ( Java , Javascript , php ) while in my 1 year help desk internship. In all the programming classes I was able to blow through the homework easily even while other students were panicking and dropping. I think I have managed to avoid the most atrocious noob/self taught mistakes ( spaghetti code etc) by just doing research before starting something and trying to keep good design in mind. Even so I'd have to make heavy use of references to crawl through even simple projects that would result in fully finished useful applications. I need a job now and I am tired of the slow pace of the classes and would love to get any kind of practical experience I could. The problem is that I am not sure what I should be trying to do. I have a very strong preference for application programming or at least anything light on design and preferably pretty low level. If I can't do that then anything technology related , for example help desk would be better than nothing. I live near Raleigh NC. Am I qualified for anything that could contribute to coding (C++ or Java ) experience or even web development though I don't really like it. Would web development experience help. If not is there anything I could read or do that could help? Is the help desk my only choice? If it is, are there any relatively quick certifications or anything similar that would help while I am waiting? Sorry about the long multi-part question. Thanks for reading.

• Type of AI to tackle this problem?

  I posted this on stackoverflow but want to get your recommendations as well as a user on overflow recommended I post it here. I'm going to say from the beginning that I am not a programmer, I have a cursory knowledge of different types of AI and am just a businessman building a web app. Anyways, the web app I am investing in to develop is for a hobby of mine. There are many part manufacturers, product manufacturers, upgrade and addon manufacturers etc. for hardware/products in this hobby's industry. Currently, I am in the process of building a crowd sourced platform for people who are knowledgeable to go in and mark up compatibility between those parts as its not always clear cut if they are for example: Manufacturer A makes a "A" class product, and manufacturer B makes upgrade/part that generally goes with class "A" products, but is for one reason or another not compatible with Manufacturer A's particular "A" class product. However, a good chunk (60%-70%) of the products/parts in the database can have their compatibility inferenced by their properties, For example: Part 1 is type "A" with "X" mm receiver and part 2 is also Type "A" with "X" mm interface and thus the two parts are compatible.. or Part 1 is a 8mm gear, thus all bushings of 8mm from any manufacturer is compatible with part 1. Further more, all gears can only have compatibility relationships in the database with bushing and gear boxes, but there can be no meaningful compatibility between a gear and a rail, or receiver since those parts don't interface. Now what I want is an AI to be able to learn from the decisions of the crowdsourced platform community and be able to inference compatibility for new parts/products based on their tagged attributes, what type of part they are etc. What would be the best form of AI to tackle this? I was thinking a Expert System, but explicitly engineering all of the knowledge rules would be daunting because of the complex relations between literally tens of thousands of parts, hundreds of part types and many manufacturers. Would a ANN (neural network) be ideal to learn from the many inputs/decisions of the crowdsource platform users? Any help/input is much appreciated.

• Grub not loading after Windows 8 Install

  My system was configured to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Windows 7. Today I got my hands on the MSDN release of Windows 8 and I installed it over my Windows 7. Now the computer just boots to Windows 8 directly without loading the GRUB screen. So I followed the steps as suggested in: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows. • Should I Open Source? [closed]

  My company recently created a full javascript, html & css Virtual Tour. Since it is html based there is no real way of securing our information/code so selling it could be flimsy. We are an extremely small company, barely on the map so I was thinking that by making this an open source project it could give us a chance to jump start our SEO by page views alone, especially if we provide documentation. Not to mention hopefully bring a community following on our blog. On the other hand though could this possibly hurt our sales as a web development company? If we are handing out this cool "plugin" we made what keeps people from making it commercial somehow? So I'm trying to weigh the options on whether I should make this Open Source or not and the pros / cons of each especially for a small business. What do you guys think about making things Open Source? How do I know if this product is the right thing to make Open Source? What are some pros and cons to going Open Source?

• Cannot find GRUB - Ubuntu/Windows 8 dual-boot

  Hello Ubuntu community, I find myself in an interesting situation. I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with Windows Vista. Recently my brother decided it would be a good idea to overwrite Vista with the Windows 8 consumer preview. Since we have had this PC for a very long time, we have long since lost the Vista CD, and according to the Windows 8 preview website you cannot recover your previous OS without it. I thought this would be a good opportunity to try out Ubuntu (since we obviously cannot keep the preview as an OS), but it appears that Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop is not compatible with Win8. Ubuntu doesn't run from the LiveUSB I made, instead it freezes on the loading screen and then disintegrates into black and white stripes. I blamed this failure on Ubuntu not being compatible with win8 yet and tried to install Ubuntu from the USB on a partition made from the remaining space on my hard drive - about 100GB. However the installer crashed while loading modules and told me I didn't have enough disk space. Since then, I have not been able to load either Ubuntu or Windows, BIOS is shifted over to the left of my screen, and I always get the same message: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> typing "ls" at the prompt gives me the following: (hd0) (hd0,msdos7) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) does this mean I have multiple partitions running windows on my computer? Is it possible to recover Vista without the disk? Are all of my problems stemming from Ubuntu not being compatible with Win8 preview? (I realize the majority of my questions are about Windows, but seeing as the prompt I get is for grub I thought I would ask here first.) Any insight anyone has on this predicament would be greatly appreciated.

• A new day has dawned in my SharePoint world.

  Until I started working with SharePoint, I never thought I would be blogging.  I am usually a pretty private individual, but this thing called the SharePoint community pulls you in and makes you feel like you should be a part of it, contributing to it and giving something back.  So here I am blogging for the first time – and so begins my tale. I started my work life as a Systems admin, but was given a chance to start working with SharePoint 2007 back in - ironically enough - January of 2007.  It has been downhill from there or uphill depending on your perspective!  I jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back.  Lucky for me Microsoft gave us a new version to work with.  A new job a couple years ago gave me the chance to work with that new version.  Now I spend my days weaving a tale of SharePoint for a Sales based organization. So why this blog?  To give something back. I spend most days toggling between administration, InfoPath, Branding and design, HTML, JQuery, and XSLT depending on the need.  The blog will detail these projects and solutions as best I can.  Hopefully they will be of use to someone who may be trying to accomplish similar things, just as many of the blogs that I have referenced over the last 5 years have been a huge help and resource for me.

• Open-sourcing a proprietary library without certain features

  I hope I'm in the right place to ask that. I have a question regarding the practice of open-sourcing a proprietary library that we built and use at work. The licence will probably be MIT. I like the idea, but here comes the unusual part : I have been tasked to remove some of the most advanced features. Those will remain on our servers, available as a service. We will open-source the (JavaScript in case it is of interest) library, along with a minimal associated server code. I am not asking a question about the technical problems (I imagine we will have to maintain and synchronize somehow different repositories, maybe with incompatible pull requests, but this for stack overflow). What I would like to know is: How that would be perceived by the community at large ? Does it risk killing the eventual interest in this library? I don't personally know of any library that works like that. I'm pretty sure it is possible however, but any evidence of such a library is welcome (successful if possible). That's also because I'd like to see how they present it. More importantly, what could be the rationale for/against it? I'm not sure I understand the consequences of doing it so.

• Drupal site Instant Messaging [migrated]

  I am trying to find a module or a standalone solution that I can turn into a module that will allow me to have an instant messaging system like Facebook does on a Drupal site that I am working on. I have never setup a chat system before. My particular requirements are rather stringent. It needs to be a solution where we host the chatting server (if one is needed separate from the website itself). It must use the site's login state (can't use an external system at all, that means no GTalk, Yahoo IM, or AIM). It also must be able to handle up to 1,000 users at any given time. I have looked through the Drupal community and I tried the DXMPP module, but it requires Jquery UI 1.8 and that doesn't work with all of the other things that my site uses (such as Homebox). We do have a Jabber server already setup and ready to go. Does anyone have any thoughts or options here? Thanks! EDIT: We are using Drupal 6.

• How to learn to program [on hold]

  I went to a community college and got a degree in computer science, but I found out I only learn very little about programming. As a result I landed byself a office assistant work (for a year now), I want to study on my own and apply for some internship / very entry level development job. I am wondering how should a person learn to program now? I feel that I might not doing it correctly, I understand everyone has a different approach, but I am really clueless on what to do, as it seems I am 5-10 years away. 1) Read the old college programming textbook cover to cover, learn every single concepts, do all the practice problems and master them (1-2 times until error free). Currently reading this java book 2) Work on any project, keep on googling and reading tutorials (including the books on that specific language). I have been doing 1, but the progress is really slow, about 2-5 pages / hour, over a 1000+ page book, I felt really discouraged. I have a few of them to go through (data struction, analyis algorthim, computer theory, operating system.) I wonder is this the right method to do? I know it is going to take time, but I am hoping to get some advice from current programmers.

• Phishing attack stuck with jsp loginAction.do page? [closed]

  I 'm testing a phishing website on a staged replica of an jsp web-application. I'm doing the usual attack which involves changing the post and action field of source code to divert to my own written jsp script capture the logins and redirect the victim to the original website. It looks easy but trust me its has been me more then 2 weeks I cannot write the logins to the text file. I have tested the jsp page on my local wamp server it works fine. In staged when I click on the ok button for user/password field I'm taken to loginAction.do script. I checked this using tamper data add on on firefox. The only way I was able to make my script run was to use burp proxy intercept the request and change action parameter to refer my uploaded script. I want to know what does an loginAction.do? I have googled it - its quite common to see it in jsp application. I have checked the code; there is nothing that tells me why the page always point to the .do script instead of mine. Is there some kind of redirection in tomcat configuration. I like to know. I'm unable to exploit this attack vector? I need the community help

• Massive Affiliate Shopping Platform. Is WordPress really suitable? [closed]

  I am working on an online shopping platform that acquires it's data from various affiliate programs through XML files. I am talking hundreds and thousands of items per program here that change often if they go out of stock. My clients choice of CMS was WordPress. I am guessing he assumed the user friendly interface would make life easy for him. However, the fact that he hired me to parse the XML files, store data in the back-end and basically make everything work tells me he had very little clue about what he was getting himself into. My impression is that WordPress has a very specific way of handling data as it divides everything into categories/sub-categories in the back-end which is very counter intuitive to a business model where data exists in numbers of over hundreds and thousands of items and is further cross referenced by programs so that any change in the programs XML file can easily be reflected products page. Conclusion I have a very specific database model implemented for handling my clients needs. However, this model conflicts with how wordpress chooses to save data in the back-end natively. I am absolutely convinced WordPress is geared towards anything that might resemble a blog and definitely not THIS. I am thinking about asking my client to shift to a custom CMS. Before making my pitch though, I wanted to run this by the stack community. Thanks for the input in advance.

• SQL SERVER – SHRINKFILE and TRUNCATE Log File in SQL Server 2008

  Note: Please read the complete post before taking any actions. This blog post would discuss SHRINKFILE and TRUNCATE Log File. The script mentioned in the email received from reader contains the following questionable code: “Hi Pinal, If you could remember, I and my manager met you at TechEd in Bangalore. We just upgraded to SQL Server 2008. One of our jobs failed as it was using the following code. The error was: Msg 155, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 ‘TRUNCATE_ONLY’ is not a recognized BACKUP option. The code was: DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDBLog, 1) BACKUP LOG TestDB WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDBLog, 1) GO I have modified that code to subsequent code and it works fine. But, are there other suggestions you have at the moment? USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [TestDb] SET RECOVERY SIMPLE WITH NO_WAIT DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDbLog, 1) ALTER DATABASE [TestDb] SET RECOVERY FULL WITH NO_WAIT GO Configuration of our server and system is as follows: [Removed not relevant data]“ An email like this that suddenly pops out in early morning is alarming email. Because I am a dead, busy mind, so I had only one min to reply. I wrote down quickly the following note. (As I said, it was a single-minute email so it is not completely accurate). Here is that quick email shared with all of you. “Hi Mr. DBA [removed the name] Thanks for your email. I suggest you stop this practice. There are many issues included here, but I would list two major issues: 1) From the setting database to simple recovery, shrinking the file and once again setting in full recovery, you are in fact losing your valuable log data and will be not able to restore point in time. Not only that, you will also not able to use subsequent log files. 2) Shrinking file or database adds fragmentation. There are a lot of things you can do. First, start taking proper log backup using following command instead of truncating them and losing them frequently. BACKUP LOG [TestDb] TO  DISK = N'C:\Backup\TestDb.bak' GO Remove the code of SHRINKING the file. If you are taking proper log backups, your log file usually (again usually, special cases are excluded) do not grow very big. There are so many things to add here, but you can call me on my [phone number]. Before you call me, I suggest for accuracy you read Paul Randel‘s two posts here and here and Brent Ozar‘s Post here. He has send this another wonderful article regarding performance counter for readers of this blog. I really liked it and I expect all of you who are Powershell geeks, you will like the same as well. As a good DBA, you know that our social life is restricted to a few movies over the year and, when possible, a pizza in a restaurant next to your company’s place, of course. So what we have to do is to create methods through which we can facilitate our daily processes to go home early, and eventually have a nice time with our family (and not sleeping on the couch). As a consultant or fixed employee, one of our daily tasks is to monitor performance counters using Perfmom. To be honest, IDE is getting more complicated. To deal with this, I thought a solution using Powershell. Yes, with some lines of Powershell, you can configure which counters to use. And with one more line, you can already start collecting data. Let’s see one scenario: You are a consultant who has several clients and has just closed another project in troubleshooting an SQL Server environment. You are to use Perfmom to collect data from the server and you already have its XML configuration files made with the counters that you will be using- a file for memory bottleneck f, one for CPU, etc. With one Powershell command line for each XML file, you start collecting. The output of such a TXT file collection is set to up in an SQL Server. With two lines of command for each XML, you make the whole process of data collection. Creating an XML configuration File to Memory Counters: Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "Memory" | Get-PerfCounterInstance  | Get-PerfCounterCounters |Save-ConfigPerfCounter -PathConfigFile "c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.xml" -newfile Creating an XML Configuration File to Buffer Manager, counters Page lookups/sec, Page reads/sec, Page writes/sec, Page life expectancy: Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "SQLServer:Buffer Manager" | Get-PerfCounterInstance | Get-PerfCounterCounters -CounterName "Page*" | Save-ConfigPerfCounter -PathConfigFile "c:\temp\BufferManager.xml" –NewFile Then you start the collection: Set-CollectPerfCounter -DateTimeStart "05/24/2010 08:00:00" -DateTimeEnd "05/24/2010 22:00:00" -Interval 10 -PathConfigFile c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.xml -PathOutputFile c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.txt To let the Buffer Manager collect, you need one more counters, including the Buffer cache hit ratio. • SQL SERVER – Fix : Error : 3117 : The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files

  I received the following email from one of my readers. Dear Pinal, I am new to SQL Server and our regular DBA is on vacation. Our production database had some problem and I have just restored full database backup to production server. When I try to apply log back I am getting following error. I am sure, this is valid log backup file. Screenshot is attached. [Few other details regarding server/ip address removed] Msg 3117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to roll forward. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally. Screenshot attached. [Removed as it contained live IP address] Please help immediately. Well I have answered this question in my earlier post, 2 years ago, over here SQL SERVER – Fix : Error : Msg 3117, Level 16, State 4 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. However, I will try to explain it a little more this time. For SQL Server database to be used it should in online state. There are multiple states of SQL Server Database. ONLINE (Available – online for data) OFFLINE RESTORING RECOVERING RECOVERY PENDING SUSPECT EMERGENCY (Limited Availability) If the database is online, it means it is active and in operational mode. It will not make sense to apply further log from backup if the operations have continued on this database. The common practice during the backup restore process is to specify the keyword RECOVERY when the database is restored. When RECOVERY keyword is specified, the SQL Server brings back the database online and will not accept any further log backups. However, if you want to restore more than one backup files, i.e. after restoring the full back up if you want to apply further differential or log backup you cannot do that when database is online and already active. You need to have your database in the state where it can further accept the backup data and not the online data request. If the SQL Server is online and also accepts database backup file, then there can be data inconsistency. This is the reason that when there are more than one database backup files to be restored, one has to restore the database with NO RECOVERY keyword in the RESTORE operation. I suggest you all to read one more post written by me earlier. Sample Code for reference: RESTORE DATABASE AdventureWorks FROM DISK = 'C:\AdventureWorksFull.bak' WITH NORECOVERY; RESTORE DATABASE AdventureWorks FROM DISK = 'C:\AdventureWorksDiff.bak' WITH RECOVERY; In this post, I am not trying to cover complete backup and recovery. I am just attempting to address one type of error and its resolution. Please test these scenarios on the development server.
