  • Best way to show code snippets in word?

    Does anyone know a good way to display code in Microsoft Word documents? I have tried to include code as regular text which looks awful and gets in the way when editing regular text. I have also tried inserting objects, a WordPad document and Text Box, into the document then putting the code inside those objects. The code looks much better and is easier to avoid while editing the rest of the text. However, these objects can only span one page which makes editing a nightmare when several pages of code need to be added. Lastly, I know that there are much better editors/formats that have no problem handling this but I am stuck working with MS word.

  • Best practice for copying private instance vars with NSCopying

    I might be missing something obvious here, but I'm implementing NSCopying on one of my objects. That object has private instance variables that are not exposed via getters, as they shouldn't be used outside the object. In my implementation of copyWithZone:, I need alloc/init the new instance, but also set up its state to match the current instance. I can obviously access current private state from inside copyWithZone:, but I can't set it into the new object, because there are no accessors for that state. Is there a standard way around this while still keeping data privacy intact? Thanks.

    Hi People who talk about loggers here never talke about EventLog, I think this is good for windows system. Is it reliable, or I found it dead in some bad morning? Why not logging everything at SQLServer, I am creating E-Commerce website, if SQL server down the website will be down anyway. but I am worry about temporally connection failure, what do u think? Why everyone like files, it can be in great size, too big to handle, or maybe I will create another file when a file is too big, and I can create a file with a date. Some one tried MS Enterprise library? talk to me about it. Thanks

  • VS2010 and CSS: What is the best strategy to individually position form controls

    OK, I have a ton of controls on my page that I need to individually place. I need to set a margin here, a padding there, etc. None of these particular styles that I want to apply will be applied to more than control. What is the bets practice for determining at which level the style is placed, etc? OK, my choices are 1) External CSS file 1A) Using ClientIdMode = Auto (the default) I could assign a unique CssClass value to the ASP.NET control and, in the external CSS file, create a class selector that would only be applied to that one control. 1B) User Client ID = Predicatable In the external CSS file, I could determine what the ID will be for the controls of interest and create an ID selector (#ControlID{Style} ). However, I fear maintenance issues due to including/removing parent containers that would cause the ID to change. 1C) User Client ID = Static. I could choose static IDs for the controls such that I minimize the likelihood of a clash with auto generated IDs (perhaps by prefixing the ID with "StaticID_" and use an external stylesheet with ID selectors. 2) I could place the style right on the control. The only disadvantage here, as I see it, is that style info is brought down each time instead of being cached , which is what I'd get using an external CSS. If a style isn't resused, I personally don't see much benefit to placing it in an external file, though please explain why if you disagree. Is there moire of a reason that "It's nice to have all the CSS in one place?"

    My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

    Hello, I'm designing a city building game and got into a problem. Imagine Sierra's Caesar III game mechanics: you have many city districts with one market each. There are several granaries over the distance connected with a directed weighted graph. The difference: people (here cars) are units that form traffic jams (here goes the graph weights). Note: in Ceasar game series, people harvested food and stockpiled it in several big granaries, whereas many markets (small shops) took food from the granaries and delivered it to the citizens. The task: tell each district where they should be getting their food from while taking least time and minimizing congestions on the city's roads. Map example Sample diagram Suppose that yellow districts need 7, 7 and 4 apples accordingly. Bluish granaries have 7 and 11 apples accordingly. Suppose edges weights to be proportional to their length. Then, the solution should be something like the gray numbers indicated on the edges. Eg, first district gets 4 apples from the 1st and 3 apples from the 2nd granary, while the last district gets 4 apples from only the 2nd granary. Here, vertical roads are first occupied to the max, and then the remaining workers are sent to the diagonal paths. Question What practical and very fast algorithm should I use? I was looking at some papers (Congestion Games: Optimization in Competition etc.) describing congestion games, but could not get the big picture. Any help is very appreciated! P. S.   • Best pattern to load enumerated values from DAL using WCF RIA Services

    I would like to be able to load several RIA entitysets in a single call without chaining/nesting several small LoadOperations together so that they load sequentially. I have several pages that have a number of comboboxes on them. These comboboxes are populated with static values from a database (for example status values). Right now I preload these values in my VM by one method that strings together a series of LoadOperations for each type that I want to load. For example: public void LoadEnums() { context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues1Query()).Completed += (s, e) => { this.StatusValues1 = context.StatusValues1; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues2()).Completed += (s1, e1) => { this.StatusValues2 = context.StatusValues2; context.Load(context.GetMyStatusValues3Query()).Completed += (s2, e2) => { this.StatusValues3 = context.StatusValues3; (....and so on) }; }; }; }; While this works fine, it seems a bit nasty. Also, I would like to know when the last loadoperation completes so that I can load whatever entity I want to work on after this, so that these enumerated values resolve properly in form elements like comboboxes and listboxes. (I think) I can't do this easily above without creating a delegate and calling that on the completion of the last loadoperation. So my question is: does anyone out there know a better pattern to use, ideally where I can load all my static entitysets in a single LoadOperation?

    Hi, We are using too many iframes in out web application. In these iframes we load the pages which may also contains iframes and so on up to N level. Right now i'm using recursive function to find out the required iframe object in JavaScript. It works fine, The issue is when we create large dynamic pages which may contains up to 1000 iframes in it. In this case my recursive function takes too much time to find the required iframe object. How i can overcome this issue or these is any alternative of recursion in JavaScript. Thanks

    I want to copy the entire contents of a directory from one location to another in C#. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this using System.IO classes without lots of recursion. There is a method in VB that we can use if we add a reference to Microsoft.VisualBasic: new Microsoft.VisualBasic.Devices.Computer(). FileSystem.CopyDirectory( sourceFolder, outputFolder ); This seems like a rather ugly hack. Is there a better way?

    I am evaluating the use of code generation for my flight simulation project. More specifically there is a requirement to allow "the average engineer" (no offense I am one myself) to define the differential equations that describe the dynamic system in a more natural syntax than C++ provides. The idea is to devise a abstract descriptor language that can be easily understood and edited to generate C++ code from. This descriptor is supplied by the modeling engineer and used by the ones implementing and maintaining the simulation evironment to generate code. I've got something like this in mind: model Aircraft has state x1, x2; state x3; input double : u; input bool : flag1, flag2; algebraic double : x1x2; model Engine : tw1, tw2; model Gear : gear; model ISA : isa; trim routine HorizontalFight; trim routine OnGround, General; constant double : c1, c2; constant int : ci1; begin differential equations x1' = x1 + 2.*x2; x2' = x2 + x1x2; begin algebraic equations x1x2 = x1*x2 + x1'; end model It is important to retain the flexibility of the C language thus the descriptor language is meant to only define certain parts of the definition and implementation of the model class. This way one enigneer provides the model in from of the descriptor language as examplified above and the maintenance enigneer will add all the code to read parameters from files, start/stop/pause the execution of the simulation and how a concrete object gets instatiated. My first though is to either generate two files from the descriptor file: one .h file containing declarations and one .cpp file containing the implementation of certain functions.   • What is the best software design to use in this scenario

    I need to generate HTML snippets using jQuery. The creation of those snippets depends on some data. The data is stored server-side, in session (where PHP is used). At the moment I achieved this - retrieving the data from the server via AJAX in form of JSON - and building the snippets via specific javascript functions that read those data The problem is that the complexity of the data is getting bigger and hence the serialization into JSON is getting even more difficult since I can't do it automatically. I can't do it automatically because some information are sensible so I generate a "stripped" version to send to the client. I know it is difficult to understand without any code to read, but I am hoping this is a common scenario and would be glad for any tip, suggestion or even design-pattern you can give me. Should I store both a complete and a stripped data on the server and then use some library to automatically generate the JSON from the stripped data? But this also means I have to get the two data synchronized. Or maybe I could move the logic server-side, this way avoiding sending the data. But this means sending javascript code (since I rely on jQuery). Maybe not a good idea. Feel free to ask me more details if this is not clear. Thank you for any help

    I asked this at the GWT forum but I'm impatient for the answer and I seem to get rather good responses here. A html or jsp file is used to launch the xxx.nocache.js, which then decides which browser "permutation" to use. <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8"> <title>xxx</title> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="xxx.nocache.js"></script> </head> In my case, I am using a jsp. When the JSP is executed, it discovers some conditions. I wish to pass these conditions as values to the GWT module being launched. The "elegant" GWT way to pass these values would be to persist them as request/memcache attributes and then have the GWT module perform RPC to retrieve those values. For example, the JSP discovers that the current user is Whoopy. Shouldn't I simply have the JSP generate javascript to store user = "Whoopy" as a top or namedframe level javascript variable and use JSNI within the module to retrieve the value for user? I have not tried it yet, but I would like to know how anyone might have done it without having to use RPC.

  • Best Ergonomic trackball (finger-operated, with scroll wheel) for programmer

    We programmers are at great risk of RSI. After 10 years, I was having shoulder problems and switched to a trackball, which helped, then switched to my left hand which helped even more. I'm looking for a good finger-operated trackball with a scroll wheel. (I do not like the ones where you control the ball w/ your thumb. My thumb isn't as dexterous). I also want to have a scroll wheel. I currently use a Logitech Marble Mouse but the scrolling implementation is very poor. EDIT: I just tried the Marble Scroll (free software that provides better scrolling. Works great. Another option is the KatMouse addon (which I've not tried) for trackballs. I hear the old Logitech Trackman was very good, but is no longer available. Anyone have experience with the Marble Mouse (and the above fixes) ? Or any suggestions of a good trackball.

    Is it a good practice to put js files of the "content" folders in inner folders representing their logical module? For example have a "datalayer" and "view" folders? I looked into some well known extensions, such as Firebug, and saw no such devision. I'm a Java developer so its seems much more natural to divide the files logically.

  • Best terminal environment for Cygwin/Windows?

    Today I run Cygwin with rxvt using the following startup line: rxvt -bg black -sl 8192 -fg white -sr -g 150x56 -fn "Fixedsys" -e /usr/bin/bash --login -i This gives me a resizeable native Windows window which is much better than the standard "DOS box" the default cygwin.bat provides. However, the current configuration does have a couple of issues: I am not able to enter non-ASCII characters into the terminal window (i.e. æ, ø, å and Æ, Ø, Å, which I use semi-frequently. In fact, the terminal will not even accept them when I paste them into the window. If I paste a string like "bølle" (Norwegian for "bulley"), all I get is "blle". I am not able to render UTF-8 character, they only show as ?, even if they are supported by the font (i.e. when rendering the same characters in ISO-8859-1 they show just fine.). I am running English Windows Vista with locale and keyboard layout set to Norwegian (ISO-8859-1 character set?), but I've had the exact same issue on Windows 2000 and XP. Anyone knows how to fix this (i.e. a better way to configure rxvt)? Apart from the issues mentioned above, I'm very happy with rxvt, so if I find a way to resolve them I'd like to continue using it. However, if the issues are not (easily) solvable, are the any other good terminal solutions for Cygwin? Update The solution provided by Andy and Mattias (editing the .inputrc file) did solve the input problem, but output rendering is still an issue. Output is fine when I render in ISO-8859-1, but when using UTF-8 I only get ? for non-ASCII characters. This behavior is consistent between rxvt, urxvt (under Cygwin XFree X Server), mintty and PuttyCyg. Is there a similar configuration file where output encoding can be set (i.e. the equivalent of setting output locale on a Linux system)?

    As a embedded systems programmer I always need to make lots of base conversions (dec to hex, hex to bin and so on...), and I must admit: Windows 7 calculator is a good calc, but too limited in my point of view. I work a lot with communications protocols and it`s common to need some base conversion in this field of knowledge. I`m looking for a calculator software (not a hardware one), to help with base conversions, but it must also support scientific calc. Can anyone help on this?   • Best Approach to process images in Django

    I've have an application with Android front end and Django as the back end. As part of the answers here, I'm confused over the approach which I should take to send images to Django Server. I've 2 options at my disposal as Piro pointed out there. 1) Sending images as Multi Part entity 2) Send image as a String after encoding it using Base 64. So I am considering the approach that would make it easy to be processed by Django. The images are small in size (<200kb) and number (<10). Any suggestions or pointers are most welcome.
