  • Any command line tool checking windows domain password?

    Does Windows provide a command line utility that lets me check a domain user's password? It is sufficient that the utility returns success(0) if I provide a matching domain user name and password. Alternatively, is there a simple VB/JS script that can do this? I'm the Intranet admin of my company and have the default password set for corporate staff, so I'd like to quickly scan which users have not changed their default password. Better yet, are there any books or websites which cover such topics so that I can get more information?

  • External USB attached drive works in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. How to fix?

    Earlier this week I purchased this "N52300 EZQuest Pro" external hard drive enclosure from here. I can connect the enclosure using USB 2.0 and access the files in both NTFS partitions on the MBR partitioned drive when I use either Windows XP (SP3) or Mac OS X 10.6. So it works as expected in XP & Snow Leopard. However, the enclosure does not work in Windows 7 (Home Premium) either 64-bit or 32-bit or in Ubuntu 10.04 (kernel 2.6.32-23-generic). I'm thinking this must be a Windows 7 driver problem because the enclosure works in XP & Snow Leopard. I do know that no special drivers are required to use this enclosure. It is supported using the USB mass storage drivers included with XP and OS X. It should also work fine using the mass storage support in Windows 7, no? FWIW, I have also tried using 32-bit Windows 7 on both my desktop, a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 with a Pentium Dual-Core E6500 @ 2.93GHz, and on my early 2008 MacBook. I see the same failure in both cases that I see with 64-bit Windows 7. So it doesn't appear to be specific to one hardware platform. I'm hoping someone out there can help me either get the enclosure to work in Windows 7 or convince me that the enclosure hardware is bad and should be RMAed. At the moment though an RMA seems pointless since this appears to be a (Windows 7) device driver problem. I have tried to track down any updates to the mass storage drivers included with Windows 7 but have so far come up empty. Heck, I can't even figure out how to place a bug report with Microsoft since apparently the grace period for Windows 7 email support is only a few months. I came across a link to some USB troubleshooting steps in another question. I haven't had a chance to look over the suggestions on that site or try them yet. Maybe tomorrow if I have time ... ;-) I'll finish up with some more details about the problem. When I connect the enclosure using USB to Windows 7 at first it appears everything worked. Windows detects the drive and installs a driver for it. Looking in Device Manager there is an entry under the Hard Drives section with the title, Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device. When you open Windows Disk Management the first time after the enclosure has been attached the drive appears as "Not initialize" and I'm prompted to initialize it. This is bogus. After all, the drive worked fine in XP so I know it has already been initialized, partitioned, and formatted. So of course I never try to initialize it "again". (It's a 1 GB drive and I don't want to lose the data on it). Except for this first time, the drive never shows up in Disk Management again unless I uninstall the Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device entry under Hard Drives, unplug, and then replug the enclosure. If I do that then the process in the previous paragraph repeats. In Ubuntu the enclosure never shows up at all at the file system level. Below are an excerpt from kern.log and an excerpt from the result of lsusb -v after attaching the enclosure. It appears that Ubuntu at first recongnizes the enclosure and is attempting to attach it, but encounters errors which prevent it from doing so. Today I recieved a 1394b 9 pin to 1394a 6 pin cable which allowed me to connect the "EZQuest Pro" via Firewire. Everything works. When I use Firewire I can connect whether I'm using Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. I even tried booting my Gigabyte desktop as an OS X 10.6.3 Hackintosh and it worked there as well. (Though if I recall correctly, it also worked when using USB 2.0 and booting OS X on the desktop. Certainly it works with USB 2.0 and my MacBook.)     Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10 sec. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessary boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sec I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

  • How to get rid of InternetCorkboard.com virus (specifically)?

    The other day I picked up the new version of InternetCorkboard.com virus, the one that doesn't come with any program I've installed (as far as I can tell) and that doesn't show among Firefox add-ons. I've tried as much as I could google and even installed brand new version of Microsoft Security Essentials. I did the full scan with MSE and it didn't find anything. ATM I'm back at three-years old Firefox, but I wanna kick the bastard out. I got redirected here from Stack Overflow, but I need an answer since everything I could google is worse than useless. So anyone has any idea how to kick InternetCorkboard virus specifically?

  • Server IP Address['s]

    hi there i am running server 2003, and seem to have this problem where the server starts kicking out users after a while, especially when they log off, they cant log back in, or the printers on the metwork stop connecting and they cant print to it. when i check the server, i notice that the server has 2 IP addresses, even though it has a static IP, it seems to pick up another IP address as well, but when you go into teh IPV set up, its not there, but of you run the IP scan utility tool, it picks it up. to correct this, i either can log off the server, then log back in, and the IP disappears, or sometimes this doesnt work, and i need to restart the server, but thsi happens like every 2 days or so.....can anyone out there help?

Is there a program that I can input start and end times and to get multiple files of these segments? Can you also advise on the best settings to use for best quality at the smallest file sizes.   • Is there a way to unlock PDF documents?

    I realize most PDF documents are locked for a reason, but I spend several hours a week editing datasheets provided directly from my vendors to be sent to customers. Obviously it's very annoying and somewhat of a show-stopper when I download a datasheet in PDF format, then I am not able to draw boxes, add comments, or draw arrows to the supplied product. One of our vendors told us the way around that was to print a physical copy, then scan it in as a PDF - not the most technological or aesthetically pleasing solution I have found. I at least would like to be able to print the PDF to another PDF so that the new copy is unlocked for editing. Is there any way around this?

    Hi there, I'm trying to build a custom Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDS/IPS). I found a great utility named ROPE which can scan the packet payload and drop the packet that doesn't follow the rules, set by a script. This serves my purpose completely, since what I want to do is check the payload for some specific text and then drop it or allow it ( the string feature in iptables wouldn't do me any good, because I want to check more than one string in tha payload, like usernames, id's, etc ). However, ROPE is really old and despite my many attempts I haven't managed to install it properly. Do you know any similar program that will help me drop packets in iptables depending on the payload? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated :)

    My mom's Vista Home Premium (32 bit) password was changed. My mom said that she didn't change it and she doesn't think anyone else here did either. So.. Could this have been done remotely? I'm running Ophcrack now, what else can we do? (I haven't tried safe mode yet.) I'm a techie and somewhat baffled. Help! Edit: ophcrack found empty LM but no NT hash is displayed. Entering safe mode... Edit2: I'm an idiot. Well sort of. Ophcrack could not crack the password which was just lowercase English letters, but for some reason, I was able to login using the orignal password in safe mode. Once in safe mode I "changed the password" back to it's original value and was then able to login in regular mode... It's time to run a virus scan.

    We have a pfSense firewall in our datacentre. By default, pfSense is only storing 500K of firewall filter logs, which is only a few hours for us. How can I increase this? pfSense uses clog rather than the usual BSD newsyslog. I only want the log for debugging firewall rules, not compliance or anything, and the firewall has 100GB of spare disk space, so I'd rather have the logs on the firewall itself than set up a syslog server.

  • Using an SSD with no AHCI [ICH7 base] - Windows 7 hangs frequently

    I have a Shuttle Intel G31 + ICH7 (base -- not M/R etc) system. I just bought an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb [VTX3-25SAT3-120G] which includes the Sandforce 2218 firmware. The ICH7 does not support AHCI. I understand that this can be a problem. What I don't understand, is if it's necessary to have the proper performance of this drive. I know that without AHCI I may get a limited read/write speed -- this is fine. What my concern is, is the constant freezing/hangs I'm getting with Windows 7 on any disk activity. The 'Highest Active Time' flip-flops from 0 to 100% every minute or so regardless of large or small files. EDIT: The threads/processes with the highest response time is the kernel. I've been reading about other people with Shuttle SG31G2s, and they seem to be using SSDs no problem. Is this the controller's fault? The fact that I do not have AHCI enabled? It makes sense to me that if this SSD requires AHCI features that it would cause Windows to hang, but I would like to fully determine my situation before returning things/reformatting. To initially have my drive recognise the SSD at all, I had to change the BIOS option to Force Gen II instead of Auto for the SATA controller. I then installed Windows with no problem. There were no errors in the event log related to disk usage, but watching the perfmon I could see the highest active time and the processes (usually pagefile.sys being written to, or chrome/firefox caching) which was correlated to the hanging. So now what I need answered is: should I be returning this SSD and getting one with a different controller, or returning the SSD all-together as it will never work out and I will continue to get these hangs. Windows 7 hangs after longer inactivity of user -- also tried messing with power settings with no luck. It was already set to 'Never' for turning off HDDs.

    I'm having a weird problem here. I upgraded a Windows XP computer from IE6 to IE8 yesterday and everything seemed to work normally until today. Now I can't open any browser on this computer. The computer had Google Chrome installed and it suddenly disappeared, I installed it again and now it dowsn't open either. I also installed Firefox and the same thing happened. The computer had no anti virus, I installed Ad-Aware, run a full scan and it detected some malware, but browsers are still not working Any ideas?

  • CentOS - PHP - Yum Install with Custom ./configure params

    I have successfully configured and compiled php on my dev server, and works great, but after talking to a sysadmin buddy, he informed that custom compiles of the latest builds are not recommended for production (or even development) systems. He noted a situation where they custom configured and compiled PHP 5.3.6, only to find that there was some issue with a low-level Postgres driver, so they had to revert back to 5.3.3. So I am considering going back to yum to install PHP, however I have several custom configuration settings and was wondering if it's possible to pass or configure how PHP will be compiled through YUM?   • easy Switching to open folders on a mac

    How do I easily switch to an open folder on a mac? In windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all i need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar in mac, and when i have a lot of folders opened, ie, lots of finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way i'm doing it is, i put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first i have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen i have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one i want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a mac? :(

    "the user profile service failed the logon" i had gotten this error when trying to login last night. i looked it up online and found that this was caused by an error (that is still unfound, apparently) that is causing windows to mark profiles as backup, and that the best way to fix this error is to do a system restore from the repair your computer special boot option. what i would like to know is if there someone happens to know the cause of this error, as i would not like it to happen again. Computer specifications OS: Windows 7 hard-disk check completely clean "repair startup" scan and fix: clean, no problems virus scans with kaspersky: clean (while not the usual information for specifications, i felt this info was more important for this case, any other information can be asked for.
