  I have an xml file... <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <items defaultNode="1"> <default contentPlaceholderName="pageContent" template="" genericContentItemName="" /> <item urlSearchPattern="connections-learning" contentPlaceholderName="pageContent" template="Connections Learning Content Page" genericContentItemName="" /> <item urlSearchPattern="online-high-school" contentPlaceholderName="pageContent" template="" genericContentItemName="" /> </items> I am trying to find the first node where the urlSearchPattern attribute is contained in the string urlSearchPattern. Where I'm having trouble is finding the nodes where the attribute is contained in the string value instead of the string value be contained in the attribute. Here's my attempt so far. • Passing XML data and user from coldfusion page to .NET page

  I'd appreciate some input on this situation, I can't figure out the best way to do this. I have some data that's being prepared for me in a ColdFusion app and in an IFrame within the CF app we want to display some graphs (not strictly an image, it's an entire page) being generated on the .NET side of things. I'd like to pass XML data from the CF side to .NET as well as the user. On the .NET side I'm putting the data in a session so the user can sift through it without the need to have it re-queried and re-passed from CF. What I've tried: Generating XML with CF, putting it in a hidden form field, auto-submitting (with JS) a the form to the .NET side. The issue I'm having with this approach is the encoding being done on the form post. The data has entries like <entry data="hello &amp; goodbye">. It's an issue because it's being URL encdeded, Posted, and when I get it on the .NET side I get <entry data="hello & goodbye"> which isn't properly formed XML. What I'd like to avoid: An intermediary DB approach (dropping the data in a DB on CF, picking it up with .NET) I'd like to only display what is passed to the page. I have security concerns with the data, it's very sensitive. Passing the data to a webservice, returning a GUID, forwarding the user with a URL Parameter to access the passed in data. I think that'd be risky if someone happened on a link to that data. I can't take that risk. I was thinking of passing the data with JSON, but I'm very unfamiliar with it. Thoughts?   I have a simple web service that will have one method: DoTransactions(xlm) Now the reason that i am using XML as a parameter is due to the fact that the parameters will often change. So for example it could be: <payload> <userId>1234</userid> <partnerId>ptn654</partnerId> </payload> OR <payload> <partnerId>ptn654</partnerId> <items> <item1> <cost>10</cost> <description>This is item 1</description> </item1> </items> </payload> As you can see the XML string will always change (this is due to a client request) Would it be better to rather pass in a string and parse the XML in the method or should is there a better way to do it. This web service will be used for varios different code languages.

• Guilty of unsound programming

  I was reading Robert Rossney's entry on "What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?" found at: (What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?) when I realized that I had inadvertently developed a near-identical application! The app consists of an HTTPListener object that grabs incoming POST requests. Based on the information in the header, I pass the body of the request to SQL Server to perform the appropriate transaction. The requests look like: <InvoiceCreate Control="389> <Invoice> <CustomerNumber>5555</CustomerNumber> <Total>300.00</Total> <RushOrder>1</RushOrder> </Invoice> </InvoiceCreate> Once it's received by the HTTPListener object, I perform the required INSERT to the Invoice table using SQL Server's built-in XML handling functionality via a stored procedure: INSERT INTO Invoice (InvoiceNumber, CustomerNumber, Total, RushOrder) SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER, @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/CustomerNumber)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)') I then use another SELECT statement in the same stored procedure to return the value of the new Invoice Number that was inserted into the Invoices table: SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER FOR XML PATH 'InvoiceCreateAck' I then read the generated XML using a SQL data reader object in C# and use it as the response of the HTTPListener object. My issue is, I'm noticing that Robert is indeed correct. All of my application logic exists inside the stored procedure, so I find myself having to do a lot of error-checking (i.e. validating the customer number and invoicenumber values) inside the stored procedure. I'm still a midlevel developer, and as such, am looking to improve. Given the original post, and my current architecture, what could I have done differently to improve the application? Are there any patterns or best practices that I could refer to? What approach would you have taken? I'm open to any and all criticism, as I'd like to do my part to reduce the amount of "unsound programming" in the world.

• Replacing XML in File from "Document" in Java

  Hi, after processing my first steps in working with XML in java I am now at the point where I want to update some data in my XML/GPX file... Reaplacing it in my "Document" data type works great :) How here comes the question: how can I store the changed "document"-model back to my file? Do I have to do this by using the standart file-functions (via steams and so on) oder is the a more elegant way to do this? ;-) Here's the code I already worked out, maybe that could help. Everything I try fails. Does anyone have a good example of how to do this?

• Zend Framework: Navigation XML and duplicate page elements

  Hi In XML I'd normal expect the following to be perfectly valid and navigable in a meaningful way using something like PHP's DomDocument: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configdata> <page> <name>Home</name> </page> <page> <name>Log in</name> </page> </configdata> This is not the case when using Zend_Navigation. Each <page> element needs to have a unique name, so you would need to do: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configdata> <page_home> <name>Home</name> </page_home> <page_log_in> <name>Log in</name> </page_log_in> </configdata> This works, but is very annoying. I'd much rather have multiple page elements which can have the same name and can be easily copy and pasted when creating many pages for navigation. Why does each one need a unique name? Is there a way of not having to have a unique name?

I think the ' type="boolean" ' part of the field is creating problems. I know this might be a very trivial problem. Kindly bear with my ignorance. Please help.

records... i am not able to find any solution /control using which i an do it easily. coz my field's value is in attribute named "Value" when in the examples i saw its between opening and closing tag.. i have 2 methods to do so. 1 . i make one page to edit a single record and pass id of record to that page on editing. open the page in iframe on same page to edit and in page_load get data from database for id passed and fill it in control. 2 . i store xml on server as physical file and use it in page i opened in iframe to edit the record. so i am confused... can anybody please guide me that what shpould i do to let user provide interface to edit this xml data/user profile ?
