  • Sort Programs in StartMenu

    Is there a way to (alphabetically or in other way) to sort program list in the Start=Programs menu? When installing / uninstalling programs this menu is added-removed, but not sorted, and sometimes takes time to find a nested program in this list. I have Windows XP, but think the same situation could be applied and on the other versions of Windows.

  • Reorganize Primary/Recovery Partitions and then install Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

    Hi all, I have a Samsung N120 netbook (with upgraded 2GB RAM). I recently got a new hard drive and motherboard for it because the original parts were faulty. However, when I got it back, whoever was working on it decided to make my primary partition ~40GB in size, compared to (what appears to be) the recovery partition, which is around 100GB in size. Firstly, I want to make the recovery partition much smaller (around ~10GB or smaller, if possible) and then make my primary partition fill the rest of the space. After that, I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. I don't know if this is installed within Windows like Ubuntu 9.10 but I want both XP and UNR on my machine at the same time. So basically... how do I resize my primary and recovery partitions such that the recovery is about 10GB or less and the primary fills the rest? Secondly, is UNR installed within Windows? (If not, would it create its own partition on my hard drive, along with the XP partition, and the recovery partition?) Thanks in advance.

  • Browsers hang when loading web pages

    HP Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2. Problem affects IE8 and Firefox. When attempting to browse most web sites, browser loads web site title in browser's title bar, then displays "Waiting for site url" and never completes loading the page. Able to connect to www.google.com with no problems. Unable to connect to www.carbonwy.com, www.wsj.com, www.cnn.com, www.microsoft.com, etc. Other PCs on same subnet are all able to connect to these sites without any problem. nslookup resolves all of these sites without any problem, so DNS does not appear to be the problem. Windows Firewall is disabled. Norton 360 was previously installed but has been uninstalled. No other firewall software is installed. IE8 Protected Mode is off. IE8 advanced settings have been reset. IE8 user settings have been reset. After reset, IE8 tries to connect to http://hp-laptop.aol.com and go.microsoft.com but same symptoms persist. Title bar loads, then nothing. System has been restarted numerous times. Running out of ideas. Please help!

  • Full Screen Flash is choppy (nVidia GeForce 8200M)

    I have a new compaq presario laptop (I asked SU for advice before I bought it :-) ). It has a nVidia GeForce 8200M video card. When I try to play a flash video full screen, it plays really choppy. This is a brand new computer and is well more powerful than my previous computer so I know it's not a matter of the full screen being too processor intensive to play, or a bandwidth problem. Even playing HD hulu videos full screen was fine on my previous laptop. Any advice on how to get better performance here? edit: World Of Warcraft is able to play at a great framerate, so this machine should definitely be able to handle a simple little flash video ;-)

  • Windows 7 does not recognise second display output

    I've got a PC with dual BenQ G2222HDL monitors and an ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. I've been running both monitors at 1920x1080 for some months now but last week the second monitor switched to a lower resolution and won't let me go back to 1920x1080. If I right click the Desktop and choose Screen Resolution from the menu, I get two items in the Display: drop down list BenQ G2222HDL D-SUB Display device on: VGA In the past 2 was always the same as 1. If I click Detect a third item appears Available display output on: ATI Radeon HD 4650 but if I use the Multiple displays: drop down list to use it says "No display detected" and then lets me choose from either "Connect anyway on S-Video" or "Connect anyway on Component", neither of which help. It seems like Windows 7 recognises the card is dual-head, and knows I have got two monitors, but can't link it all together. I have checked and all my drivers are up-to-date. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the second monitor working properly again?

This is very useful as often more then one program can handle a given file extension. With the exception on zip file I generally have not seen such a function on Window. However since there is an exceptions it is possible. The questions I have is: How can a “Open with…” can be archived with windows? Is there perhaps a tool which can do it?

    Greetings, I'll start with some background information so you know what I'm trying to accomplish and then get to my question. I work at a Television station in the US and we are working on setting up an online DVR/Podcast system for all of our newscasts. So basically we would be recording every newscast in HD, encoding it to flv/h.264 for viewing in a browser on flash compatible and iphone/ipad devices, eventually migrating to WebM when it's browser compliant. This task is theoretically pretty simple as it all it involves is a TV tuner device and a program like VLC, MythTV or whatever to schedule and dump it to a file, encode it with VLC/FFMPEG and push it to the streaming server. Now to the hardware, in order to accomplish that task, should I use an internal PCI tuner or a USB 2.0 tuner? Is there a difference? The bus speeds of both are not too far apart, and is the bus speed really relevant in this case? Does it matter if the device has a hardware encoder or a software encoder? On many sites the USB was recommended for ease of set up and use, but would it overly task a processor, or is that not a concern as long as it's a decent PC (at least duo core, 6gb ram). What's the difference between the stick USB and the Box USBs? To my understanding analog is basically gone in the US, so we would want a hybrid or combo tuner correct? How do those differ from DVB? Are there any other features or concepts which I am missing which may influence the recommended product. It would be ideal if the device which could work in both Linux and a Windows environment, to my knowledge most Hauppauge are?   • Apache redirect from one domain to another domain

    Like many users, we tend to register the *.com and *.net versions of our domain names to prevent nefarious squatters. So if we wanted "foo.com" we'd also register "foo.net" and have them both resolve to the same IP address. Trying to set up Apache for the first time and need to know the proper way to redirect requests to "foo.net" to go to "foo.com" instead so that if a user types in "foo.net" they get magically redirected to "foo.com". I've been reading through the Apache URL Rewriting guide (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/misc/rewriteguide.html) and it's not readily apparent how to do this seemingly simple task.     I am trying to do dynamic portforwarding using openssh through a remote computer following this command: ssh -D 6789 rohan@<remote_ip> -p <remote_port> This should set up a socks server on my comp as I assume. I am able to use this for normal browsing but can't connect to IRC or remote ssh (through proxychains).   • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

    I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

  • debian modem problems !!!

    hay there guys ... I'm a new Debian user, it looks like a very good choice 4 me, every thing is stable, free and easy to use. the problem is, I'm using my modem to establish a dial up connection to the internet (ppp) (a very old stupid way I'm forced to use for now), and using the KPPP application to do that, and nothing is working properly for me. it seems like it didn't recognize my modem or something. i already tried to make a few stuff, and now i know my modem is on /dev/tty0, so i made a link for that on /dev/modem, and query the modem using KPPP and it responded with something like: Ati : Ati0: Ati1: ... ... Ati7: with a textBox to fill up in front of each one of thees Atis, and now, when i press connect on kppp, it says modem ready, and that's it. BTW, my modem is MDC AC'97 any suggestions pleas ....

  • How to fix Emacs client *ERROR*: Arithmetic error

    GNU Emacs 23.1.1 I've noticed that if I run Emacs and M-x server-start, I can use the emacsclient program as usual, but if if I start Emacs using emacs --daemon and then try to use emacsclient the new frame locks up and the shell outputs *ERROR*: Arithmetic error. This issue doesn't happen if I use the -t flag to force terminal mode when running emacsclient. Has anyone run into this before? Anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix it?

  • Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

    I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

  • Focus issues in OSX Spaces

    Spaces rarely returns focus to my last used window. Haven't been able to peg universally reproducible steps, but spend any time switching among spaces and windows and you'll come across this. It often happens with finder windows. I'm thinking this is because osx treats Finder as a single app, so bringing finder forward in one space brings it forward in all spaces. Extremely annoying! Anyone have a fix for this?

    I have a directory like this mkdir test cd test touch file{0,1}.txt otherfile{0,1}.txt stuff{0,1}.txt I want to run some command such as ls on certain types of files in the directory and have the * (glob) expand to all possibilities for the filename. echo 'file otherfile' | tr ' ' '\n' | xargs -I % ls %*.txt This command does not expand the glob and tries to look for the literal 'file*.txt' How do I write a similar command that expands the globs? (I want to use xargs so the command can be run in parallel)

  • Windows 7 won't load unless other harddrives "disconnect"ed in UEFI shell

    I have three disks, one GPT partitioned containing Windows 7 and Debian, the other MBR partitioned containing CentOS, and the other one MBR partitioned, empty. It used to work (loading Windows boot manager using rEFIt) but now after installing CentOS and OpenIndiana on the second drive, Windows won't boot. The logo is displayed briefly and then a text mode scrollbar "Loading files", then back to the rEFIt menu. The only thing that makes it work is if I drop into the UEFI shell and run disconnect XX where XX is the device handle of the other hard drives (obtained from running devices). This makes me think that the bootloader is getting confused about where the Windows partition is. Is there any information on how the Windows UEFI boot loader finds the Windows partition, or is there any logging I can turn on to help troubleshoot this issue?
