• Drawing different per-pixel data on the screen

  I want to draw different per-pixel data on the screen, where each pixel has a specific value according to my needs. An example may be a random noise pattern where each pixel is randomly generated. I'm not sure what is the correct and fastest way to do this. Locking a texture/surface and manipulating the raw pixel data? How is this done in modern graphics programming? I'm currently trying to do this in Pygame but realized I will face the same problem if I go for C/SDL or OpenGL/DirectX.

  In the early days of OpenGL and DirectX, it was required that textures were powers of two. This meant that interpolation of float values could be done very quickly using shifting and such. Since OpenGL 2.0, and preceding that via an extension, non-power-of-two texture dimensions has been supported. Are there performance advantages to sticking to power-of-two textures on modern integrated and discrete GPUs? What advantages do non-power-of-two textures have, if any? Are there large populations of desktop users who don't have cards that support non-power-of-two textures?

• How do I pass vertex and color positions to OpenGL shaders?

  I've been trying to get this to work for the past two days, telling myself I wouldn't ask for help. I think you can see where that got me... I thought I'd try my hand at a little OpenGL, because DirectX is complex and depressing. I picked OpenGL 3.x, because even with my OpenGL 4 graphics card, all my friends don't have that, and I like to let them use my programs. There aren't really any great tutorials for OpenGL 3, most are just "type this and this will happen--the end". I'm trying to just draw a simple triangle, and so far, all I have is a blank screen with my clear color (when I set the draw type to GL_POINTS I just get a black dot). • Getting the front buffer into a gfx mem surface (Dx9)

  I'm using DirectX 9 to acquire the frontbuffer. There are a couple of ways I know of to get at the front buffer: GetRenderTargetData() GetFrontBufferData() The MSDN page on both of these API calls state that the data is copied from device memory to system memory. I'd like to copy the front buffer surface directly to another graphics memory surface, as I have other manipulations to perform on the acquired surface before returning it to system memory. I'm creating a D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC texture (gfx mem texture) and calling GetFrontBufferData() to write the front buffer to my textures surface0. Is this valid? Will the operation remain in gfx memory, or will it need to move to system memory and then back to graphics memory? If this is the case, is what I'm trying to achieve possible?

• How would I go about implementing a globe-like "ballish" map?

  I am new to 3D development and I have this idea of having the game world like our globe is - a ball. So, there would be no corners in the map and the game is top-down RTS game. I would like the camera to go on and on and never stop even though you are moving the camera to the same direction all the time. I am not sure if this is even possible, but I would really like to build a globe-like map without borders. Can this be done, and how exactly? I am using XNA, C#, and DirectX. • Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

• What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

  Currently I am developing an RTS game using XNA ( / ANX.Framework ). There is one thing bothers me. I am not sure in what way or how to organise Buffers. Should I use a new Vertexbuffer for any object ( e.g. a Char, a Table, an model ) or is it better to use ONE HUGE/ BIG Buffer to store any geometry in? I am still new to 3D Programming though I finished yet couple games using DirectX 9. Well, I hope this question qin't a duplicate and I appreciate any answer leading me into the right direction.

  I want to write a game as my final year diploma project.(I'm a 4th-year-student now so I've got a year and several months). But I don't know what to choose: either write my own game engine using DirectX9(10)(I don't like OpenGL) or use OGRE + PhysX(Don't like Unity) I'm more interested in writing my own game engine(but I wonder if I'll create engine on the same level as even Unreal 1.0 hah) but on the other side with PhysX I'll have advanced physics in my game and with OGRE I'll have good grahics. For 3d models I want to use Maya. What do you advise me to choose? As for me I've got a little DirectX experience,not bad C++ programming skills(but not expert's) and a little knowledge of Maya. My English isn't perfect either hah...

• Making a app show inside a GUI in Java

  Hello. I have one problem I've been dealing with for this week. You see, I'm new to Java, so that's probably it... Anyways, I've started a project out of pure curiosity. I had it done in Java, but in plain CMD-style, which is not very pretty. It calls one of my ten programs, chosen by the user using "Case". Eg.: If you type 1, it will go to program 1. After you finish it, it goes back to selection until the user press 0. After that, I've been trying to make a GUI for it. I've been able to create the selector alone and make it respond to the numbers chosen. If you press 1 and click ok, it will tell you you've chosen program 1. I, however, have not been able to make it run the program. I've been trying to make the program show up in a jPanel, part of the main GUI. I failed miserably. The program runs in separate but I can't make them run together like the CMD one. • Slowdowns when reading from an urlconnection's inputstream (even with byte[] and buffers)

  Ok so after spending two days trying to figure out the problem, and reading about dizillion articles, i finally decided to man up and ask to for some advice(my first time here). Now to the issue at hand - I am writing a program which will parse api data from a game, namely battle logs. There will be A LOT of entries in the database(20+ million) and so the parsing speed for each battle log page matters quite a bit. The pages to be parsed look like this: http://api.erepublik.com/v1/feeds/battle_logs/10000/0. (see source code if using chrome, it doesnt display the page right). It has 1000 hit entries, followed by a little battle info(lastpage will have <1000 obviously). On average, a page contains 175000 characters, UTF-8 encoding, xml format(v 1.0). Program will run locally on a good PC, memory is virtually unlimited(so that creating byte[250000] is quite ok). The format never changes, which is quite convenient. My second try was to replace the code between A and B with: Iterator it = IOUtils.lineIterator(is, "UTF-8"); Same result, except this time A-B was 0ms, and B-C was 1000ms, so then every call to it.next() must have been consuming some significant time.(IOUtils is from apache-commons-io library). And here is the culprit - the time taken to parse the stream to string, be it by an iterator or BufferedReader in ALL cases was about 1000ms, while the rest of the code took 0ms(e.g. irrelevant). This means that parsing the stream to LinkedList, or iterating over it, for some reason was eating up a lot of my system resources. question was - why? Is it just the way java is made...no...thats just stupid, so I did another experiment. In my main method I added after the getWebPageAsStream(): //Point A ba = new byte[l]; // 'l' comes from wobj.getContentLength above bytesRead = is.read(ba); //'is' is our URLConnection original InputStream offset = bytesRead; while (bytesRead != -1) { bytesRead = is.read(ba, offset - 1, l - offset); offset += bytesRead; } //Point B InputStream is2 = new ByteArrayInputStream(ba); //Now just working with 'is2' - the "copied" stream The InputStream-byte[] conversion took again 1000ms - this is the way many ppl suggested to read an InputStream, and stil it is slow. And guess what - the 2 parser methods above (convertToXML() and convertBattlePagetoXMLWithoutDOM(), when passed 'is2' instead of 'is' took, in all 4 cases, under 50ms to complete. I read a suggestion that the stream waits for connection to close before unblocking, so i tried using HttpComponentsClient 4.0 (http://hc.apache.org/httpcomponents-client/index.html) instead, but the initial InputStream took just as long to parse. e.g. this code: public InputStream getWebPageAsStream2(int battle_id, int page) throws Exception { String url = "http://api.erepublik.com/v1/feeds/battle_logs/" + battle_id + "/" + page; HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet httpget = new HttpGet(url); HttpParams p = new BasicHttpParams(); HttpConnectionParams.setSocketBufferSize(p, 250000); HttpConnectionParams.setStaleCheckingEnabled(p, false); HttpConnectionParams.setConnectionTimeout(p, 5000); httpget.setParams(p); HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httpget); HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); l = (int) entity.getContentLength(); return entity.getContent(); } took even longer to process(50ms more for just the network) and the stream parsing times remained the same. Obviously it can be instantiated so as to not create HttpClient and properties every time(faster network time), but the stream issue wont be affected by that. So we come to the center problem - why does the initial URLConnection InputStream(or HttpClient InputStream) take so long to process, while any stream of same size and content created locally is orders of magnitude faster? I mean, the initial response is already somewhere in RAM, and I cant see any good reasong why it is processed so slowly compared to when a same stream is just created from a byte[]. Considering I have to parse million of entries and thousands of pages like that, a total processing time of almost 1.5s/page seems WAY WAY too long. Any ideas? P.S. Please ask in any more code is required - the only thing I do after parsing is make a PreparedStatement and put the entries into JavaDB in packs of 1000+, and the perfomance is ok ~ 200ms/1000entries, prb could be optimized with more cache but I didnt look into it much.

• Get to know what HTML-button is clicked with PHP, no Name of value available

  I have a wizard with 4 steps and in one of the steps, you can add items. By default, there are 3 time 5 empty input-fields listed. When you click a button, there have to be added some more. The 3 times 5 fields are added by a loop. How can I determine where I have to add some fields (in the first 5 field of the second or the third). I can't use another name for every button, because sometimes there can be more then 3 groups of 5 fields. In my code (PHP), I use the name of the button to know what happened in the form, so the name can't be different for the button in every group ... Further, the whole step is 1 form, so the post can't go to another script ... The value of the button has to be the same for every group. I've been thinking on possible solutions and these came up: On click a javascript adds a value to the post (in a hidden field?) But is this posted with the form? Could it be possible to get the ID of the clicked button? This might be different :-) I need a refresh after the click, so pure javascript isn't a solution either ...   Hi Guys and Girls. I'm working on a website (tobacco related) that requires all visitors to validate they are over 18 before they can view the site. I have a form in place that validates the age but I'm at a dead end. How can I use this to store a cookie that they've passed the test and do a check on all pages to see if this check has already been passed or not? Any suggestions and help would be hugely appreciated! • Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

  We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output. • Visual Studio 2012 won't start

I've tried to repair, uninstall and install again and nothing. I tried to restore to a previous restore system point but nothing. The extensions I installed I can remember: VS10x Code Map VSCommands Visual SVN Nuget manager (all the above my colleagues have it too and it works fine for them) and: Web Essentials Visual Studio Color Theme Editor SlowCheetah Mobile Ready HTML5 Questions are: Anyone else has had this problem? Is there a way I can uninstall extensions from a command line or software? (I removed the extensions folder but that doesn't do anything) Can I repair the "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll"? Is it really a problem with this dll? I haven't been able to find any similar issue in other versions and because VS2012 is new doesn't seem to be much information either.

• Meraki wireless access point disconnects clients

  We have a Meraki MR16 Cloud Managed AP and it disconnects certain clients. The clients with Intel wireless cards work without any disconnects. The Meraki reports the follow in its event log: Sep 4 09:55:47 WPA authentication Sep 4 09:55:47 802.11 association channel: 11, rssi: 64 Sep 4 09:55:38 802.11 disassociation client has left AP Sep 4 09:55:38 WPA deauthentication vap: 0, radio: 0, aid: 1633956416 An example wireless network card which the Meraki disconnects is Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter. The realtek laptop is sat 2 meters away from the AP and has a lot of signal and the Meraki reports minimal interference. Any ideas why it disconnects non-intel wireless network cards?

• File system loop detected in /var/named/chroot/var/named/ CentOS6.3

  When I use find command on shell, I got the following error. find: File system loop detected; /var/named/chroot/var/named' is part of the same file system loop as/var/named'. I verified the inode number and it comes out the same as below. [root@serverone ~]# ls -ldi /var/named/chroot/var/named/ /var/named 6684673 drwxr-x--- 6 root named 4096 Sep 7 17:17 /var/named 6684673 drwxr-x--- 6 root named 4096 Sep 7 17:17 /var/named/chroot/var/named/ I cannot remove the directory with rm -f and it is saying this is directory. It is minimal CentOS6.3 install with plesk 11. Any help would be appreciated.
