• iOS: Releasing Object Thats In Use (ARC)

  I have an object that I have created that subscribes to some NSNotificationCenter notifications, but it is being released, since I don't have a pointer to the instantiation. The instantiation has a delegate that will call a method back to another class I have, so I felt it unnecessary to also have a pointer to it, since the pointer doesn't serve any purpose. Basically, I have an instantiation of a class, DelegateListener (name is just for example purposes), which subscribes to some of the default NSNotificationCeneter's notifications. This instantiation isn't assigned to any pointer after the instantiation ends. The instantiation, however, has a property, delegate. I assign a value to that delegate during the instantiation. That delegate implements methods that I want the DelegateListener to call when the notifications that it subscribed to fire. The problem with this is that the instantiation of DelegateListener that I create gets released, unless if I assign it to a retained pointer. Is there a way to avoid this automatic release of my DelegateListener instantiation within ARC?

  I'm trying to figure out if there's an elegant and concise way to have a class accessing one of its own properties when "used" as a dictionary, basically redirecting all the methods that'd be implemented in an ordered dictionary to one of its properties. Currently I'm inheriting from IterableUserDict and explicitly setting its data to another property, and it seems to be working, but I know that UserDict is considered sort of old, and I'm concerned I might be overlooking something. What I have: class ConnectionInterface(IterableUserDict): def __init__(self, hostObject): self._hostObject= hostObject self.ports= odict.OrderedDict() self.inputPorts= odict.OrderedDict() self.outputPorts= odict.OrderedDict() self.data= self.ports This way I expect the object to behave and respond (and be used) the way I mean it to, except I want to get a freebie ordered dictionary behaviour on its property "ports" when it's iterated, items are gotten by key, something is looked up ala if this in myObject, and so on. Any advice welcome, the above seems to be working fine, but I have an odd itch that I might be missing something. Thanks in advance.

  My JSONObject has some random characters contained within the string so I'm trying to remove them. I've tried this but with no luck. • Unable to update the EntitySet because it has a DefiningQuery and no &lt;UpdateFunction&gt; element

  When working with ADO.NET Entity Data Model, its often common that we generate entity schema for more than a single table from our Database.  With Entity Model generation automated with Visual Studio support, it becomes even tempting to create and work entity models to achieve an object mapping relationship. One of the errors that you might hit while trying to update an entity set either programmatically using context.SaveChanges or while using the automatic insert/update code generated by GridView etc., is “Unable to update the EntitySet <EntityName> because it has a DefiningQuery and no <UpdateFunction> element exists in the <ModificationFunctionMapping> element to support the current operation” While the description is pretty lengthy, the immediate thing that would come to our mind is to open our the entity model generated code and see if you can update it accordingly. However, the first thing to check if that, if the Entity Set is generated from a table, whether the Table defines a primary key.  Most of the times, we create tables with primary keys.  But some reference tables and tables which don’t have a primary key cannot be updated using the context of Entity and hence it would throw this error.  Unless it is a View, in which case, the default model is read-only, most of the times the above error occurs since there is no primary key defined in the table. There are other reasons why this error could popup which I am not going into for the sake of simplicity of the post.  If you find something new, please feel free to share it in comments.   Is it possible to render and style a <title> element from within the <head> of an html document? I thought it was impossible to render information from the <head>, but the system status page for 37signals.com seems to be doing just that - http://status.37signals.com/. If you inspect the element at the very top of the page, the text that reads "37signals System Status", you'll see that the part of the DOM that is generating the text is the <head>'s <title>, and the css is as follows: title { display: block; margin: 10px auto; max-width: 840px; width: 100%; padding: 0 20px; float: left; color: black; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; -moz-box-sizing: border-box; box-sizing: border-box; } Can someone confirm that the <title> info from the <head> is indeed what is being rendered? If so, can someone point to documentation that defines this capability as I have not found any? I have applied the above css to an html document on my local web server using the same browser (chromium, os x 10.8.5) as the 37signals site was viewed on, yet my file did not display the <head>'s <title>.

• Calling C# object method from IronPython

  I'm trying to embed a scripting engine in my game. Since I'm writing it in C#, I figured IronPython would be a great fit, but the examples I've been able to find all focus on calling IronPython methods in C# instead of C# methods in IronPython scripts. To complicate things, I'm using Visual Studio 2010 RC1 on Windows 7 64 bit. IronRuby works like I expect it would, but I'm not very familiar with Ruby or Python syntax. What I'm doing: ScriptEngine engine = Python.CreateEngine(); ScriptScope scope = engine.CreateScope(); //Test class with a method that prints to the screen. scope.SetVariable("test", this); ScriptSource source = engine.CreateScriptSourceFromString("test.SayHello()", Microsoft.Scripting.SourceCodeKind.Statements); source.Execute(scope); This generates an error, "'TestClass' object has no attribute 'SayHello'" This exact set up works fine with IronRuby though using "self.test.SayHello()" I'm wary using IronRuby though because it doesn't appear as mature as IronPython. If it's close enough, I might go with that though. Any ideas? I know this has to be something simple.

  I have the below code that does not seem to work at all :( I keep getting: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected The error seems to occur when the timeout is done. So if I raise the timeout with 10 seconds the error holds for another 10 seconds. I want to be able to update the number of friends online async. The number is shown with the following html: <a href="" id="showChat" >Friends online <strong id="friendsOnline">(?)</strong></a> The friends part is set at the first run, but when the timeout calls back it does not fire again. Also, I cannot see on which line the error occurs because if I want to break on the error it just shows "no source code" etc. The code below is the code I'm using. • Diffence between FQL query and Graph API object access

  What's the difference between accessing user data with the Facebook Graph API (http://graph.facebook.com/btaylor) and using the Graph API to make a FQL query of the same user (https://api.facebook.com/method/fql.query?query=QUERY). Also, does anyone know which of them the Facebook Developer Toolkit (for ASP.NET) uses? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to access the logged in user's birthday after they begin a Facebook Connect session on my site, but when I use the toolkit it doesn't return it. However, if I make a manual call to the Graph API for that user object, it does return it. It's possible I might have something wrong with my call from the toolkit. I think I may need to include the session key, but I'm not sure how to get it.   UPDATE: It's working as expected just needed to pass the correct Id, DUH!~ I have a custom object in salesforce, kind of like the comments section on a case for example. When you add a new comment it has a date/time stamp for that entry, I wanted to update the previous case comment date/time stamp when a new case comment is created. • Javascript object dependencies

  In complex client side projects, the number of Javascript files can get very large. However, for performance reasons it's good to concatenate these files, and compress the resulting file for sending over the wire. I am having problems in concatenating these as the dependencies are included after they are needed in some cases. For instance, there are 2 files: /modules/Module.js <requires Core.js> /modules/core/Core.js The directories are recursively traversed, and Module.js gets included before Core.js, which causes errors. This is just a simple example where dependencies could span across directories, and there could be other complex cases. There are no circular dependencies though. The Javascript structure I follow is similar to Java packages, where each file defines a single Object (I'm using MooTools, but that's irrelevant). The structure of each javascript file and the dependencies is always consistent: Module.js var Module = new Class({ Implements: Core, ... }); Core.js var Core = new Class({ ... }); What practices do you usually follow to handle dependencies in projects where the number of Javascript files is huge, and there are inter-file dependencies?

Im not sure if i can use find inside a filter but i also dont know how to get the attribute from the jQuery object. I can not use jQuery(this).attr('data-type') == $filterA Because the attribute maybe contain various filters .Thats why im trying to use jQuery "~=" Should i give up and end using a indexOf ?

• JavaScript - Settting property on Object in Image load function, property not set once outside funct

  Sometimes JavaScript doesn't make sense to me, consider the following code that generates a photo mosaic based on x/y tiles. I'm trying to set a .Done property to true once each Mosaic image has been downloaded, but it's always false for some reason, what am I doing wrong? var tileData = []; function generate() { var image = new Image(); image.onload = function() { // Build up the 'tileData' array with tile objects from this Image for (var i = 0; i < tileData.length; i++) { var tile = tileData[i]; var tileImage = new Image(); tileImage.onload = function() { // Do something with this tile Image tile.Done = true; }; tileImage.src = tile.ImageUrl; } }; image.src = 'Penguins.jpg'; tryDisplayMosaic(); } function tryDisplayMosaic() { setTimeout(function() { for (var i = 0; i < tileData.length; i++) { var tile = tileData[i]; if (!tile.Done) { tryDisplayMosaic(); return; } } // If we get here then all the tiles have been downloaded alert('All images downloaded'); }, 2000); } Now for some reason the .Done property on the tile object is always false, even though it is explicitly being set to true inside tileImage.onload = function(). And I can ensure you that this function DOES get called because I've placed an alert() call inside it. Right now it's just stuck inside an infinite loop calling tryDisplayMosaic() constantly. Also if I place a loop just before tryDisplayMosaic() is called, and in that loop I set .Done = true, then .Done property is true and alert('All images downloaded'); will get called.

  Hi all, I am trying to add a curved border around an image downloaded and to be displayed in a UITableViewCell. In the large view (ie one image on the screen) I have the following: productImageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:product.image]]; [productImageView setAlpha:0.4]; productImageView.frame = CGRectMake(10.0, 30.0, 128.0, 128.0); CALayer *roundedlayer = [productImageView layer]; [roundedlayer setMasksToBounds:YES]; [roundedlayer setCornerRadius:7.0]; [roundedlayer setBorderWidth:2.0]; [roundedlayer setBorderColor:[[UIColor darkGrayColor] CGColor]]; [self addSubview:productImageView]; In the table view cell, to get it to scroll fast, an image needs to be drawn in the drawRect method of a UIView which is then added to a custom cell. so in drawRect - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { ... point = CGPointMake(boundsX + LEFT_COLUMN_OFFSET, UPPER_ROW_TOP); //CALayer *roundedlayer = [productImageView layer]; //[roundedlayer setMasksToBounds:YES]; //[roundedlayer setCornerRadius:7.0]; //[roundedlayer setBorderWidth:2.0]; //[roundedlayer setBorderColor:[[UIColor darkGrayColor] CGColor]]; //[productImageView drawRect:CGRectMake(boundsX + LEFT_COLUMN_OFFSET, UPPER_ROW_TOP, IMAGE_WIDTH, IMAGE_HEIGHT)]; // [productImageView.image drawInRect:CGRectMake(boundsX + LEFT_COLUMN_OFFSET, UPPER_ROW_TOP, IMAGE_WIDTH, IMAGE_HEIGHT)]; So this works well, but if I remove the comment and try to show the rounded CA layer the scrolling goes really slow. To fix this I suppose I would have to render this image context into a different image object, and store this in an array, then set this image as something like: productImageView.image = (UIImage*)[imageArray objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; My question is "How do I render this layer into an image?" TIA.
