  I have a little problem: the Winform control (that contains between others WPF) suddenly stopped to be displayed in Designer.   This really is no different from when you create an audience with regular old NTLM (Windows Authentication).  The difference is that while the AD provider is set up by default in all environments, the extra membership provider (that you use for Forms Authentication) isn't included anywhere except in the web application where you install it.  To be able to find your FBA users in the audience creation tool, you'll need to add the extra membership provider(s) to the web.config for your SSP site in IIS.  At that point, the People Picker should start recognizing your Forms Auth users, and you can create your audience as needed.

There are three websites: Default Web Site Website1 Website2 If I set up both services in Default Web Site and connect to the other (using HttpClient) using the URI http://localhost/service then everything is okay. The desired set-up is to move these two services to separate websites and rather than using the URI http://localhost/service, accessing the service via http://website1.domain.com/service still using HttpClient. I received the exception: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Unauthorized (401) is not one of the following: OK (200), Created (201), Accepted (202), NonAuthoritativeInformation (203), NoContent (204), ResetContent (205), PartialContent (206) I can see this is a 401, but what is going on here? So far we looked at the (simpler) scenario where a client acquires a token from an identity provider and uses that for authentication against a relying party WCF service. Another common scenario is, that the client first requests a token from an identity provider, and then uses this token to request a new token from a Resource STS or a partner’s federation gateway. This sounds complicated, but is actually very easy to achieve using WIF’s WS-Trust client support. The sequence is like this: Request a token from an identity provider. You use some “bootstrap” credential for that like Windows integrated, UserName or a client certificate. The realm used for this request is the identifier of the Resource STS/federation gateway. Use the resulting token to request a new token from the Resource STS/federation gateway. The realm for this request would be the ultimate service you want to talk to. Use this resulting token to authenticate against the ultimate service. Step 1 is very much the same as the code I have shown in the last post. Calling the service now works exactly like I described in my last post. You may now wonder if the same thing can be also achieved using configuration only – absolutely. But there are some gotchas. First of all the configuration files becomes quite complex. As we discussed in part 4, the bindings must be nested for WCF to unwind the token call-stack. But in this case svcutil cannot resolve the first hop since it cannot use metadata to inspect the identity provider. This binding must be supplied manually. The other issue is around the value for the realm/appliesTo when requesting a token for the R-STS. Using the manual approach you have full control over that parameter and you can simply use the R-STS issuer URI. Using the configuration approach, the exact address of the R-STS endpoint will be used. This means that you may have to register multiple R-STS endpoints in the identity provider. Another issue you will run into is, that ADFS does only accepts its configured issuer URI as a known realm by default. You’d have to manually add more audience URIs for the specific endpoints using the ADFS Powershell commandlets. I prefer the “manual” approach. That’s it. Hope this is useful information.

• Workflow foundation 4.0 message correlation and error reporting

  I have a workflow service that runs and performs a number of different operations (such as web service calls). If one of these operations fails I call an error reporting web service to notify a seperate system that one of my workflow operations has failed. As the error could be something like the web service being down, I loop and retry this operation until it works. There can be times though when the data I'm passing to this web service is faulty and it needs changing. So I need to be able to hook into this running (but delayed) workflow and change local workflow variables and then re-run the operation. I've looked at message correlation in workflow 4.0 to achieve this but because the delay activity is active in my running workflow instance, any second service call doesn't do anything (it's like the delay activity is blocking any other requests). I've tried setting 'CanCreateInstance' to both true and false but it doesn't help. Thanks!

  What is the best way to upload a file to a Document Library on a SharePoint server through the built-in web services that version WSS 3.0 exposes? Following the two initial answers... We definitely need to use the Web Service layer as we will be making these calls from remote client applications. The WebDAV method would work for us, but we would prefer to be consistent with the web service integration method. There is additionally a web service to upload files, painful but works all the time. Are you referring to the “Copy” service? We have been successful with this service’s CopyIntoItems method. Would this be the recommended way to upload a file to Document Libraries using only the WSS web service API? I have posted our code as a suggested answer.

• Multiple WCF windows services on the same box - endpoint configuration

  Hi, I have 2 windows services installed on a machine with different service names, they install and start fine. What's happening is that they're both listening to the same endpoints and thus competing for messages. I've tried to change the baseAddress to be different for both services without success. I call web service, everything is ok. Then I revoke this certificate in certification authority. Certificate is in Revoked certificate. I call web service with this certificate, but web service verify this certificate as good, but this certificate is between revoked. I don't know why? Anybody help me please? • Program seems to get stuck ?

  I have a Java program, I did some change and the strange thing is no matter what I do now, it will output the same result before my change, I looked into my system (Windows Vista), and clicked on "Generate a system health report", the result says : Symptom : A service is reported as having an unexpected error code Cause : One or more services has failed. The service did not stop gracefully, suggesting the service may have crashed or one of its components stopped in an unsupported way. Details : Service exited with code not equal to 0 or 1077 Resolution : Restart the service It doesn't say which service, and I defragmented my drives a few times, it still gave me the same report. I also checked my memory, it says no problem with ram. Everything else is ok, I re-started the windows a few times, got more free space on my C: drive, yet the Java program is still not responding to my new changes, unless I intentionally make a mistake, it gives me compile error, but if it can compile successfully, it still gives me the results before the change. What can I do to fix this ? Frank

  Hi there, I am considering moving my Service Layer and my data layer (repository pattern) to a WCF Rest service. So basically i would have my software installed locally (WPF client) which would call the Service Layer that exists via a Rest Service... The service layer would then call my data layer using a WCF Rest Service also OR maybe just call it via the DLL assembly I was hoping to understand what the performance would be like. Currently I have my datalayer and servicelayer installed locally via DLL Assemblies locally on the pc. Also i presume the WCF REST services won't support method overloading hance the same name but with a different signature?? I would really appreciate any feedback anyone can give. Thanks

• WCF Web Services - Multiple Hop impersonation on the same server

  Hi Folks I have 3 web services, all located on the same server. My Client calls Service A, which impersonates the client to call Service B, and all is well. Now, I want to impersonate the caller of service B (which is my username) to call Service C. When I use the same technique as before (AllowedImpersonationLevel = Impersonate, user.Impersonate()), The user doesnt get passed to service C. Instead, Service C sees the user as the user I am running it under in IIS. Is there anything special I need to do to get this working? Is this a delegation issue? • Starting self hosted WCF services on demand

  Is it possible to start self hosted WCF services on demand? I see two options to accomplish this: Insert a listener in the self hosted WCF's web server and spin up a service host when a request for a specific service comes in, before WCF starts looking for the existence of that endpoint; or Integrate a web service in process, start a service host for a request if it isn't running yet and redirect the request to that service host (like I suspect IIS does). I cannot use IIS or WAS because the web services need to run in process with the UI business logic. Which is feasible and how can I accomplish this? EDIT: I cannot just start the service hosts because there are hundreds, most (about 95%) of which are (almost) never used but need to be available. This is for exposing a business logic layer of 900 entities.
