• BASH SHELL IF ELSE run command in background

- by bikerben
I have used the & command before to make a script run another script in the background like so: #!/bin/bash echo "Hello World" script1.sh & script2.sh & echo "Please wait..." But lets say I have another script with an IF ELSE statment and I would like to set an ELIF statement mid flow as a background task witht the & and then carry on with processing the rest of my script knowing that while rest of the ELIF will carry running in the back ground: #!/bin/bash if cond1; then stuff sleep 10 & stuff stuff elif cond2; then something else else echo "foo" fi stuff echo "Hello World" I really hope this makes sense any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Help with variables and new lines, and quoting in a bash script

- by Scott
I would like to automate the following svn command. Note this command produces the desired results on my system - Ubuntu 10.04, svn 1.6.6, bash shell, when issued from the command line: svn ci -m $'Added new File: newFile.txt\nOrig loc: /etc/networking/newFile.txt' /home/user/svnDir/newFile.txt I would like to run that command in a bash script, assuming that the original full path to the file is contained in the variable $oFileFull, and the filename is in $oFileName. The script is executed from the svn directory. I need to allow for the possibility that the file name and or path contain spaces. so the line inside my shel script might look like: svn ci -m$'Added new file: ${oFileName}\nOrig loc: ${oFileFull}' ${oFileName} But I want the variables (which may contain spaces) expanded before the command is executed, and I cannot figure out how to do this while enclosing the svn comment in single quotes which is necessary in order to get the new line in the subversion comment log. I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to properly quote and assemble this command. Any help appreciated.

• Translate parse_git_branch function to zsh from bash (for prompt)

- by yar
I am using this function in Bash function parse_git_branch { git_status="$(git status 2> /dev/null)" pattern="^# On branch ([^${IFS}]*)" if ! ${git_status}} =~ "working directory clean" ; then state="*" fi # add an else if or two here if you want to get more specific if ${git_status} =~ ${pattern} ; then branch=${BASH_REMATCH[1]} echo "(${branch}${state})" fi } but I'm determined to use zsh. While I can use this perfectly as a shell script (even without a shebang) in my .zshrc the error is a parse error on this line if [[ ! ${git_status}}... What do I need to do to get it ready for zshell? Edit: The "actual error" I'm getting is " parse error near } and it refers to the line with the strange double }}, which works on Bash. Edit: Here's the final code, just for fun: parse_git_branch() { git_status="$(git status 2> /dev/null)" pattern="^# On branch ([^[:space:]]*)" if ! ${git_status} =~ "working directory clean" ; then state="*" fi if ${git_status} =~ ${pattern} ; then branch=${match[1]} echo "(${branch}${state})" fi } setopt PROMPT_SUBST PROMPT='$PR_GREEN%n@$PR_GREEN%m%u$PR_NO_COLOR:$PR_BLUE%2c$PR_NO_COLOR%(!.#.$)' RPROMPT='$PR_GREEN$(parse_git_branch)$PR_NO_COLOR' Thanks to everybody for your patience and help. Edit: The best answer has schooled us all: git status is porcelain (UI). Good scripting goes against GIT plumbing. Here's the final function: parse_git_branch() { in_wd="$(git rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree 2>/dev/null)" || return test "$in_wd" = true || return state= git diff-index HEAD --quiet 2>/dev/null || state='*' branch="$(git symbolic-ref HEAD 2>/dev/null)" test -z "$branch" && branch='<detached-HEAD>' echo "(${branch#refs/heads/}${state})" } PROMPT='$PR_GREEN%n@$PR_GREEN%m%u$PR_NO_COLOR:$PR_BLUE%2c$PR_NO_COLOR%(!.#.$)' RPROMPT='$PR_GREEN$(parse_git_branch)$PR_NO_COLOR' Note that only the prompt is zsh-specific. In Bash it would be your prompt plus "\$(parse_git_branch)". This might be slower (more calls to GIT, but that's an empirical question) but it won't be broken by changes in GIT (they don't change the plumbing). And that is very important for a good script moving forward. Days Later: Ugh, it turns out that diff-index HEAD is NOT the same as checking status against working directory clean. So will this mean another plumbing call? I surely don't have time/expertise to write my own porcelain....

• Bash script with regex not behaving on Ubuntu

- by user265330
I have a Bash script that is working on my OpenSuSE box, but when copied across to my Ubuntu box, is not working. The script reads in from a file. The file has fields separated by white space (tabs and spaces). #!/bin/bash function test1() { while read LINE do if | $LINE =~ "^#.*" ; then continue; fi set -- $LINE local field1=$1 local field2=$2 done < test.file } test1 with test.file containing: # Field1Header Field2Header abcdef A-2 ghijkl B-3 There seem to be two problems: (1) $field2, the one with the hyphen, is blank (2) The regex to strip out the blank lines and lines that start with # is not working Anyone know what's wrong? As I said, it works fine on OpenSuSE. Thanks, Paul

• BASH: Checking for environment variables

- by Hamza
Hi folks, I am trying to check the value of an environment variable and depending on the value do certain things and it works fine as long as the variable is set. When it isn't though I get a whole bunch of errors (as BASH is trying to compare the string I specify with an undefined variable, I guess) I tried implementing an extra check to prevent it happening but no luck. The block of code I am using is: #!/bin/bash if [ -n $TESTVAR ] then if [ $TESTVAR == "x" ] then echo "foo" exit elif [ $TESTVAR == "y" ] then echo "bar" exit else echo "baz" exit fi else echo -e "TESTVAR not set\n" fi And this the output: $ export TESTVAR=x $ ./testenv.sh foo $ export TESTVAR=y $ ./testenv.sh bar $ export TESTVAR=q $ ./testenv.sh baz $ unset TESTVAR $ ./testenv.sh ./testenv.sh: line 5: [: ==: unary operator expected ./testenv.sh: line 9: [: ==: unary operator expected baz My question is, shouldn't 'unset TESTVAR' nullify it? It doesn't seem to be the case... Thanks.

• Send the "ENTER" from a bash script

- by Smat
I am trying to create a bash script to simulate a mail attack to our mailserver. For this reason i want to create a bash script to send hundred of mails to our server, but when i launch the command: $telnet 192.168.12.1 25 <-- where 192.168.12.1 is the ip of our server The telnet session start and all the commands that i write later aren't executed. I also tried to create a second script to launch command on the telnet session after that this one are been created, but when i write from the second script: $echo -ne "EHLO domain.com\r\f" It print the command but doesn't do the ENTER so the command is not taken. Any idea?

• Validating parameters to a bash script

- by nickf
I'm a total newbie to doing any bash scripting, but I came up with a basic one to help automate the process of removing a number of folders as they become unneeded. #!/bin/bash rm -rf ~/myfolder1/$1/anotherfolder rm -rf ~/myfolder2/$1/yetanotherfolder rm -rf ~/myfolder3/$1/thisisafolder This is evoked like so: ./myscript.sh <{id-number}> The problem is that if you forget to type in the id-number (as I did just then), then it could potentially delete a lot of things that you really don't want deleted. Is there a way you can add any form of validation to the command line parameters? In my case, it'd be good to check that a) there is one parameter, b) it's numerical, and c) that folder exists; before continuing with the script.

• strip version from package name using Bash

- by cd1
hi, I'm trying to strip the version out of a package name using only Bash. I have one solution but I don't think that's the best one available, so I'd like to know if there's a better way to do it. by better I mean cleaner, easier to understand. suppose I have the string "my-program-1.0" and I want only "my-program". my current solution is: #!/bin/bash PROGRAM_FULL="my-program-1.0" INDEX_OF_LAST_CHARACTER=`awk '{print match($0, "[A-Za-z0-9]-[0-9]")} <<< $PROGRAM_FULL` PROGRAM_NAME=`cut -c -$INDEX_OF_LAST_CHARACTER <<< $PROGRAM_FULL` actually, the "package name" syntax is an RPM file name, if it matters. thanks!

• Bash intercepting wildcard in script

- by MrRoth
I am using Bash script to read line by line from a text file, which has special characters in it (regular expression). When I use echo "${SOME_VAR}" it does not display the text as is. I am familiar with Prevent * to be expanded in the bash script. How can I display and use the text as is? UPDATE The text (TSV) file holds tuples similar to (the last entry is a psql query) bathroom bathroom select name from photos where name ~* '\mbathroom((s)?|(s)?)\M'; I am reading the CSV as follows: tail -n+2 text.file | while IFS=$'\t' read x y z do echo "${z}" done which gives the output select name from photos where name ~* 'mbathroom((s)?|(s)?)M'); note that the '\' is missing

• Mandatory profile on Terminal server fails to load. Userenv.log debug

- by Datapimp23
Hi, We're having a lot of corrupted profiles lately on our profile share. At the moment I have no clue why, but I decided to switch to one mandatory profile since the users can all use the same and there is no need to have seperate profiles for each user. Here's what I did. I logged into the Terminal server with a new user and configured some stuff (imported certificates and a few files). Then I logged out. Later as admin I copied the profile to another server and renamed it to bsilo. I made sure the user hive settings were adjusted. Everyone had access to the hive. I shared the bsilo folder with full access for everyone. I set the NTFS permissions to read, read & execute, list folder contents for domain users. I also renamed NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. Now I set a env variable %manprofile% on the Terminal server that points to \server\bsilo\ntuser.man I set the env var as terminal services profile path for a test user. When I log in I as the user get the following output The system cannot find the path specified. Can somebody point me in the right direction. • Sync Your Pidgin Profile Across Multiple PCs with Dropbox

- by Matthew Guay
Pidgin is definitely our favorite universal chat client, but adding all of your chat accounts to multiple computers can be frustrating.  Here’s how you can easily transfer your Pidgin settings to other computers and keep them in sync using Dropbox. Getting Started Make sure you have both Pidgin and Dropbox installed on any computers you want to sync.  To sync Pidgin, you need to: Move your Pidgin profile folder on your first computer to Dropbox Create a symbolic link from the new folder in Dropbox to your old profile location Delete the default pidgin profile on your other computer, and create a symbolic link from your Dropbox Pidgin profile to the default Pidgin profile location This sounds difficult, but it’s actually easy if you follow these steps.  Here we already had all of our accounts setup in Pidgin in Windows 7, and then synced this profile with an Ubuntu and a XP computer with fresh Pidgin installs.  Our instructions for each OS are based on this, but just swap the sync order if your main Pidgin install is in XP or Ubuntu. Please Note:  Please make sure Pidgin isn’t running on your computer while you are making the changes! Sync Your Pidgin Profile from Windows 7 Here is Pidgin with our accounts already setup.  Our Pidgin profile has a Gtalk, MSN Messenger, and Facebook Chat account, and lots of log files. Let’s move this profile to Dropbox to keep it synced.  Exit Pidgin, and then enter %appdata% in the address bar in Explorer or press Win+R and enter %appdata%.  Select the .purple folder, which is your Pidgin profiles and settings folder, and press Ctrl+X to cut it. Browse to your Dropbox folder, and press Ctrl+V to paste the .purple folder there. Now we need to create the symbolic link.  Enter  “command” in your Start menu search, right-click on the Command Prompt shortcut, and select “Run as administrator”. We can now use the mklink command to create a symbolic link to the .purple folder.  In Command Prompt, enter the following and substitute username for your own username. mklink /D “C:\Users\username\Documents\My Dropbox\.purple” “C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.purple” And that’s it!  You can open Pidgin now to make sure it still works as before, with your files being synced with Dropbox. Please Note:  These instructions work the same for Windows Vista.  Also, if you are syncing settings from another computer to Windows 7, then delete the .purple folder instead of cutting and pasting it, and reverse the order of the file paths when creating the symbolic link. Add your Pidgin Profile to Ubuntu Our Ubuntu computer had a clean install of Pidgin, so we didn’t need any of the information in its settings.  If you’ve run Pidgin, even without creating an account, you will need to first remove its settings folder.  Open your home folder, and click View, and then “Show Hidden Files” to see your settings folders. Select the .purple folder, and delete it. Now, to create the symbolic link, open Terminal and enter the following, substituting username for your username: ln –s /home/username/Dropbox/.purple /home/username/ Open Pidgin, and you will see all of your accounts that were on your other computer.  No usernames or passwords needed; everything is setup and ready to go.  Even your status is synced; we had our status set to Away in Windows 7, and it automatically came up the same in Ubuntu. Please Note: If your primary Pidgin account is in Ubuntu, then cut your .purple folder and paste it into your Dropbox folder instead.  Then, when creating the symbolic link, reverse the order of the folder paths. Add your Pidgin Profile to Windows XP In XP we also had a clean install of Pidgin.  If you’ve run Pidgin, even without creating an account, you will need to first remove its settings folder.  Click Start, the Run, and enter %appdata%. Delete your .purple folder. XP does not include a way to create a symbolic link, so we will use the free Junction tool from Sysinternals.  Download Junction (link below) and unzip the folder. • How to check last changes in filesystem or directory with bash?

- by Robert Vila
After the system unmounted the root partition I detected that some files are missing in the filesystem. wifi and the gwibber icons disappeared from the indicator applet I want to check if there are other files missing using the ls program and the locate program, which woks on indexes of a previous state of the filesystem. Thus, locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs ls -d 2>&1 >/dev/null serves for that purpose, and I can count the nonexistent files like this: locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs ls -d 2>&1 >/dev/null | wc -l except for the case where filenames have blank spaces in them; and, not very surprisingly, that is the case with Ubuntu (OMG!! It is no longer "forbidden" like in good old times). If I use: locate '/usr/share/icons/*' | xargs -Iñ ls -d 'ñ' 2>&1 >/dev/null it is not working because there is some kind of interference in the syntax between the redirections of the standard outputs and the use of the parameter -I. Can anyone please help me with this syntax or giving another idea?

• Is there a way to suspend/sleep via bash?

- by Brett Alton
I have to get nine 46" LCD monitors (running Windows) to suspend/sleep at 8pm and wake at 8am every morning. It's been a bit of a mess trying to get the commands working, including the privileges. Since I'm an Ubuntu user first and foremost, I'm wondering how easy this would be in Ubuntu/Linux. I know cron would be able to run my suspend/sleep command at 8pm (what is the suspend/sleep command anyway?), but what about waking the machine up at 8am without using Wake-on-Lan or manual intervention?

• what other bash variables are available during execution such as $USER that can assist on my script?

- by semi-newbie
This is related to question 19245, in that one of the responders answered the question in an awesome way, and very VERY clear to any newbie. Now here is a question that i can't seem to figure. i wrote a script for starting the vmware firefox plugin (don't worry. i gave that up and now run vBox VERY happily. i left vmware for my servers :) ) I needed to start the plugin as sudo, but i also needed to pass an argument (password) to it, that happen to be the same. So, if my password was Hello123, the command would be: sudo ./myscript.sh hi other Hello123 running from command line, the script would ask for my sudo password and then run. i wanted to capture THAT password and pass it as well. i also wanted to run graphically, so i tried gksudo, and there is an option -p that returns the password for variable assignment. well, that was a nightmare, because i would still get prompted for the original sudo: see below Find UserName vUser=$USER Find password (and hopefully enable sudo) vP=gksudo -p -D somedescriptiontext echo Execute command gksudo ./myscript.sh hi $vUser $vP and i still get prompted twice. so my question is tri-fold: is there a variable i can use for the password, just like there is one for user, $USER? is there a different way i should be assigning the value resulting of the command i have in $vP? i am wondering if executing the way i have it, does it in an uninitiated session and not the current one, since i am getting some addtl warning type errors on some variables blah blah i tried using Zenity to just capture the text, but then of course, i couldn't pass that value to sudo, so i could only use as a parameter, which puts me back in 2 prompts. Thanksssssssssss!

• How do I solve this "unexpected '}' syntax error" in my bash script?

- by WASasquatch
I have a piece of code that has some serious issues and I was hoping to get it solved soon but no one has offered any help. I thought I'd try some Ubuntu users since this is the OS running the script. mc_addplugin() { if pgrep -u $USERNAME -f $SERVICE > /dev/null then echo "$SERVICE is running! Please stop the service before adding a plugin." else echo "Paste the URL to the .JAR Plugin..." read JARURL JARNAME=$(basename "$JARURL") if [ -d "$TEMPPLUGINS" ] then as_user "cd $PLUGINSPATH && wget -r -A.jar $JARURL -o temp_plugins/$JARNAME" else as_user "cd $PLUGINSPATH && mkdir $TEMPPLUGINS && wget -r -A.jar $JARURL -o temp_plugins/$JARNAME" fi if [ -f "$TMPDIR/$JARNAME" ] then if [ -f "$PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME" ] then if `diff $PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME $TMPDIR/$JARNAME >/dev/null` then echo "You are already running the latest version of $JARNAME." else NOW=`date "+%Y-%m-%d_%Hh%M"` echo "Are you sure you want to overwrite this plugin? [Y/n]" echo "Note: Your old plugin will be moved to the "$TEMPPLUGINS" folder with todays date." select yn in "Yes" "No"; do case $yn in Yes ) as_user "mv $PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME $TEMPPLUGINS/${JARNAME}_${NOW} && mv $TEMPPLUGINS/$JARNAME $PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME"; break;; No ) echo "The plugin has not been installed! Removing temporary plugin and exiting..." as_user "rm $TEMPPLUGINS/$JARNAME"; exit;; esac done echo "Would you like to start the $SERVICE now? [Y/n]" select yn in "Yes" "No"; do case $yn in Yes ) mc_start; break;; No ) "$SERVICE not running! To start the service run: /etc/init.d/craftbukkit start"; exit;; esac done fi else echo "Are you sure you want to add this new plugin? [Y/n]" select yn in "Yes" "No"; do case $yn in Yes ) as_user "mv $PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME $TEMPPLUGINS/${JARNAME}_${NOW} && mv $TEMPPLUGINS/$JARNAME $PLUGINSPATH/$JARNAME"; break;; No ) echo "The plugin has not been installed! Removing temporary plugin and exiting..." as_user "rm $TEMPPLUGINS/$JARNAME"; exit;; esac done echo "Would you like to start the $SERVICE now? [Y/n]?" select yn in "Yes" "No"; do case $yn in Yes ) mc_start; break;; No ) "$SERVICE not running! To start the service run: /etc/init.d/craftbukkit start"; exit;; esac done fi else echo "Failed to download the plugin from the URL you specified!" exit; fi } It throws it at the closing bracket at the end of the function.

• Saving more corsor positions (with tput?) in bash terminal

- by AndreasT
I know that tput sc saves the current cursor position and tput rc restores it exactly where tput sc was called. The problem is that every time tput sc is called, it overwrites the previous saved position. Is there a way to save more positions, e.g. tput sc pos1 and tput sc pos2 which can be restored with, say, tput rc pos1 and tput rc pos2 respectively? (The solution need not make use of tput, I mentioned it because it's the only command I know that handles cursor position) If not, is there a way to at least save the cursor position locally in a function, so that if a function uses tput sc and then calls another function that runs again tput sc, then each function restores its own saved cursor position when invoking tput rc? Thanks in advance.

• how to get bash to stop escaping $ during tab-completion?

- by keturn
I have this on the command line: ln -sf $PWD/wine- and then I hit tab to complete the filename. In earlier versions of Ubuntu, this worked just fine to complete the wine- filename (and as a side-effect $PWD would be expanded at that time). But now it turns it in to ln -sf \$PWD/wine- which isn't what I meant at all and doesn't complete anything as the file does not literally start with $. How do I get completion back to the less broken behaviour? set tells me these are my current settings: BASHOPTS=checkwinsize:cmdhist:expand_aliases:extquote:force_fignore:hostcomplete:interactive_comments:progcomp:promptvars:sourcepath SHELLOPTS=braceexpand:emacs:hashall:histexpand:history:interactive-comments:monitor

• Bash scripting problem

- by komidore64
I'm writing a bash script to sync my iTunes music directory to a directory on a removable hard drive. The script works fine when there is absolutely nothing in the folder on the external hard drive. Once all files have been copied to the external drive, then the script begins to act strange. Even though i just sync'd everything over, it proceeds to recopy certain files again. After the initial sync, it chooses the same files to resync each consecutive time the script is executed without any changes being made to the source directory. #!/bin/bash # shell script to sync music with gigabeat and/or firewire drive musicdir="/Users/komidore64/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music" gigadir="/Volumes/GIGABEAT/music" # fwdir="/Volumes/" remove() { find "$1" \ ! \( -name "*.wav" \ -o -name "*.ogg" \ -o -name "*.flac" \ -o -name "*.aac" \ -o -name "*.mp3" \ -o -name "*.m4a" \ -o -name "*.wma" \ -o -name "*.m4p" \ -o -name "*.ape" \ -o -type d \) \ -exec rm -i {} \; } if [ $# == 0 ]; then echo "no device argument present" echo "specify '-g' for gigabeat" echo "or '-f' for firewire drive" else remove "$musicdir" while [ $1 ]; do case $1 in -g | --gigabeat ) rsync --archive --verbose --delete "$musicdir/" "$gigadir" ;; -f | --firewire ) rsync --archive --verbose --delete "$musicdir/" "$fwdir" esac shift done echo "music synced" fi
