  • jQuery selector issue finding image with usemap attribute

    - by Greg K
    I have an image map in my page: <div id="books"> <img src="images/books.png" width="330" height="298" border="0" \ usemap="#map_books" /> <map name="map_books" id="map_books" alt="books"> <area shape="poly" coords="17,73,81,288,210,248,254,264, ..." \ href="/about" alt="books" /> </map> </div> I have a function that tries to find the image in the document using this map: function(elemId) { // elemId = "#map_books" if ($(elemId).attr("tagName") == "MAP") { // find image using this map var selector = "img [usemap=\\" + elemId + "]"; var img = $(selector); if (img.length == 0) { console.log("Could not find image using " + selector); } } It fails to find the image. Could not find image using img [usemap=\#map_books] I've escaped the elemId because it starts with a hash and tried variations of selectors. $("img [usemap$=" + elemId.substring(1) + "]") $("img").find("[usemap=\\" + elemId + "]") Neither find the image. Any ideas?

  • C# program that generates html pages - limit image dimensions on page

    - by Professor Mustard
    I have a C# program that generates a large number of html pages, based on various bits of data and images that I have stored on the file system. The html itself works just fine, but the images can vary greatly in their dimensions. I need a way to ensure that a given image won't exceed a certain size on the page. The simplest way to accomplish this would be through the html itself... if there was some kind of "maxwidth" or "maxheight" property I could set in the html, or maybe a way to force the image to fit inside a table cell (if I used something like this, I'd have to be sure that the non-offending dimension would automatically scale with the one that's being reduced). The problem is, I don't know much about this "fine tuning" kind of stuff in html, and it seems to be a tough thing to Google around for (most of the solutions involve some sort of html specialization; I'm just using plain html). Alternatively, I could determine the width and height of each image at runtime by examining the image in C#, and then setting width/height values in the html if the image's dimensions exceed a certain value. The problem here is that is seems incredibly inefficient to load an entire image into memory, just to get its dimensions. I would need a way to "peek" at an image and just get its size (it could be bmp, jpg, gif or png). Any recommendations for either approach would be greatly appreciated.

  • TinyMCE Image Alignment

    - by will.earp.co.uk
    TinyMCE has always been a little difficult to align images. Either the align tag, or adding style="float: left;" has been it solution. Ideally I would just like to add class="left" or class="right" so that I can set the border and margins of the image. Up until now the only way to do this without using the advimage plugin was to insert the image, then select it, the select a style from the style menu. Ideally I should be able to use the align control in the image dialogue to set the alignment class or use the alignment controls on the toolbar when in the main editing window. I have just again started looking at a solution to this, now that IE6 is finally starting to die, I can use CSS attributes in selectors, so IMG[style="float: left;"] {} Works, but I would rather use a class incase there are any other style attributes which will cause the selector to fail. And it doesn't work in IE6, and you know some corporate clients will still be running the bloody thing! So I looked through the TinyMCE documentation and found the formats configuration option, that seems to allow you to specify how tinyMCE applies code for various operations. Here I can add the IMG tag as a selector, and have classes: "left" for the alignleft function. This applies the class correctly when the alignment is selected from the toolbar, but it still writes an inline style when the alignment is selected through the image dialogue. Am I doing something wrong or is there a better way of doing this that will allow my clients to select image alignment from both the image dialogue and the toolbar, whilst applying a class to the image?

  • Problem with relative path to image in XAML?

    - by Giri
    I am trying to reference a PNG file in my applications working directory through XAML with the following: <Image Name="contactImage"> <Image.Source> <BitmapImage UriSource="/Images/contact.png"> </Image.Source> </Image> Now in my code-behind I try to get the height of the image with contactImage.Source.Height This fails with System.IOException - cannot locate resource 'images/contact.png'. If I use something like PngBitmapDecoder p = new PngBitmapDecoder(new Uri("./Images/contact.png"), UriKind.Relative, BitmapCreateOptions.PreservePixelFormat, BitmapCacheOption.Default); Everything is happy. How can I reference an image in xaml to a path relative to the working deirectory of the app. BTW- this is being run on a remote machine (if that makes a difference). I have tried "./Images/contact.png" and ".\Images\contact.png" and several other combinations of back/forward slashes and dots. Here is the primary difference- Any time the file is referenced in XAML, it shows up as pack://aplication:,,, blah blah blah when I use the PngBitmapDecoder, it shows up correctly as "./Images/contact.png". How do I reference the image file in XAML and get it show a source as "./Images/contact.png" instead of a pack://application,,,blah blah blah?

  • WPF In-Memory Image Display

    - by Aren B
    Im trying to build an Item Template for my list-view and im bound to a list of Entities. The entity I have has a System.Drawing.Image that I'd like to display, but so far I cannot for the life of me figure out how to bind it to the <Image> block. Every example and documentation I can find on the internet pertains to Images accessible via an uri i.e. File on HDD or On Website <DataTemplate x:Key="LogoPreviewItem"> <Border BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="1"> <DockPanel Width="150" Height="100"> <Image> <Image.Source> <!-- {Binding PreviewImage} is where the System.Drawing.Image is in this context --> </Image.Source> </Image> <Label DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" Content="{Binding CustomerName}" /> </DockPanel> </Border> </DataTemplate>

  • Browser performance when combining image resizing with animated movement

    - by Steve Reichgut
    I have been tasked with the job of converting a Flash animation into HTML. The animation is rather complex and requires the need to move multiple images (9) from location (x,y) to location (x2,y2) while simultaneously increasing the image size from 215px wide to 930px wide. While doing some initial testing of this animation with just 1-2 images, I noticed a lot of choppiness in FF handling of this animation. To try and isolate the problem, I removed the dynamic resizing of the animation and just moved it from point A to point B. What was interesting was that I saw the same behavior when simply moving a 930px image that was resized down to 215px (via the CSS width or inline width properties). When I try the same animation with a different image that is actually 215px wide, it performed smoothly. I then tried the same animation with the original 930px wide image (with no resizing) and it performed well also. This makes me wonder if the browser is having to "resize" the image down to 215px each time it is moved which is causing the choppiness. Is this a correct assumption? If so, is there any other way to optimize the animation to allow for simultaneous image resizing and image movement? Notes: 1) One optimization I have done is to position the images absolutely in order to minimize the reflow process. 2) I have tested the animation using both jQuery and the fX animation framework.

  • How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

    - by anthonysomerset
    I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck(); • What can I do to get Mozilla Firefox to preload the eventual image result?

    - by Dalal
    I am attempting to preload images using JavaScript. I have declared an array as follows with image links from different places: var imageArray = new Array(); imageArray[0] = new Image(); imageArray[1] = new Image(); imageArray[2] = new Image(); imageArray[3] = new Image(); imageArray[0].src = "http://www.bollywoodhott.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/arjun-rampal.jpg"; imageArray[1].src = "http://labelleetleblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/josie-maran.jpg"; imageArray[2].src = "http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_22EXDJCJp3s/SxbIcZHTHTI/AAAAAAAAIXc/fkaDiOKjd-I/s400/black-male-model.jpg"; imageArray[3].src = "http://www.iill.net/wp-content/uploads/images/hot-chick.jpg"; The image fade and transformation effects that I am doing using this array work properly for the first 3 images, but for the last one, imageArray[3], the actual image data of the image does not get preloaded and it completely ruins the effect, since the actual image data loads AFTERWARDS, only at the time it needs to be displayed, it seems. This happens because the last link http://www.iill.net/wp-content/uploads/images/hot-chick.jpg is not a direct link to the image. If you go to that link, your browser will redirect you to the ACTUAL location. Now, my image preloading code in Chrome works perfectly well, and the effects look great. Because it seems that Chrome preloads the actual data - the EVENTUAL image that is to be shown. This means that in Chrome if I preloaded an image that will redirect to 'stop stealing my bandwidth', then the image that gets preloaded is 'stop stealing my bandwidth'. How can I modify my code to get Firefox to behave the same way?

  • Error when trying to overwrite an image (it succeeds the first time after iis reset )

  • Setting Image.Source doesn't update when loading from a resource.

    - by ChrisF
    I've got this definition in my XAML: <Image Name="AlbumArt" Source="/AlbumChooser2;component/Resources/help.png" /> The image is display OK on startup. In my code I'm looking for mp3's to play and I display the associated album art in this Image. Now if there's no associated image I want to display a "no image" image. So I've got one defined and I load it using: BitmapImage noImage = new BitmapImage( new Uri("/AlbumChooser2;component/Resources/no_image.png", UriKind.Relative)); I've got a helper class that finds the image if there is one (returning it as a BitmapImage), or returns null if there isn't one: if (findImage.Image != null) { this.AlbumArt.Source = findImage.Image; // This works } else { this.AlbumArt.Source = noImage; // This doesn't work } In the case where an image is found the source is updated and the album art gets displayed. In the case where an image isn't found I don't get anything displayed - just a blank. I don't think that it's the setting of AlbumArt.Source that's wrong, but the loading of the BitmapImage. If I use a different image it works, but if I recreate the image it doesn't work. What could be wrong with the image?

  • Flex: Scale an Image so that its width matches contentWidth?

    - by Tong Wang
    I have a dynamic layout, where an image is loaded into an HBox: <mx:HBox ...> <mx:Image height="100%" .../> </mx:HBox> only the image's height is set on the image, so that it can take all the vertical space available, while its width is left undefined and I expect the width to scale accordingly with its height. It turns out that the image's height is equal to its contentHeight, i.e. height scales properly; however, the image's width is still the same as measuredWidth (the image's original width), and is not scaled accordingly. For example, if the image's original size is 800x600 and if the HBox is 300 in height, then image height will scale down to 300, however its width doesn't scale down to 400, instead it stays at 800. I tried to add an event listener to explicitly set the image width: <mx:Image id="img" height="100%" updateComplete="img.width=img.contentWidth;" .../> It works only the first time the image is loaded, after that, if I use Image.load() to dynamically load different images, it stops working - the image width is set to 0. Any help/advice will be highly appreciated.

  • How to remove background of a image and copy into another?

    - by Gustavo Pinent
    I'm researching about captchas. In this idea, the task is: create a image from a JPEG and remove the white background, than create another image from another JPEG, than create the final image by adding the second as a background, and copying the first one over this background preserving the transparent area created, of course. Here is the code: header("Content-Type: image/jpeg"); $nFundo = rand(0,4); $Dirs = array(rand(0,7), rand(0,7), rand(0,7), rand(0,7)); // Will be four times all $_SESSION["form_captcha"] = $Dirs; $image = ImageCreatetruecolor(320, 80); ImageAlphaBlending($image, FALSE); ImageSaveAlpha($image, TRUE); $image_seta = ImageCreateFromJPEG("_captcha-seta.jpg"); // Image do copy over $image_fundo = ImageCreateFromJPEG("_captcha-fundo-".$nFundo.".jpg"); // Image to make the background for($i=0; $i<4; $i++){ ImageCopy($image, $image_fundo, $i*80, 0, 0, 0, 80, 80); } // So far so good, a background with a pattern repeated four times $color_white = ImageColorAllocate($image_seta, 255, 255, 255); ImageColorTransparent($image_seta, $color_white); ImageSaveAlpha($image_seta, TRUE); for($i=0; $i<4; $i++){ $image_seta_rot = imageRotate($image_seta, $Dirs[$i]*45, $color_white); ImageCopyResampled($image, $image_seta_rot, $i*80, 0, 0, 0, 80, 80, 80, 80); // Try } echo(imagejpeg($image)); imagedestroy($image); I tried to replace $image_seta_rot by $image_seta ("Try" line) to see if the rotation is the problem, but even without rotation, the white wasn't removed and the image just "erase" the background created before. So the copy is failing or the white were never removed... I may create a PNG with transparent background, but will be interesting to learn how to make it dynamically, don't you think? Any ideas?

  • Image not loading onto JPanel?

    - by None None
    I have been trying to figure out how to add an image to a JPanel as a background, but still have complete control over the placing of JButtons, JLabels, and etc. This is one method I found, but it is crashing and not loading the image or buttons. Here is the code: import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.JButton; import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.FlowLayout; import java.awt.GridLayout; public class PanelDemo extends JFrame { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private JButton btn1 = new JButton("EASY"); private JButton btn2 = new JButton("MEDIUM"); private JButton btn3 = new JButton("HARD"); private JButton btn4 = new JButton("High Score"); public PanelDemo() { super("Image Panel Demo"); JPanel panel = new ImagePanel( new FlowLayout(FlowLayout.CENTER, 50, 180)); JPanel panelbtn = new JPanel(new GridLayout(4, 1)); btn1.setBackground(new java.awt.Color(0, 0, 0)); btn1.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Showcard Gothic", 1, 24)); btn1.setForeground(new java.awt.Color(0, 255, 102)); btn2.setBackground(new java.awt.Color(0, 0, 0)); btn2.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Showcard Gothic", 1, 24)); btn2.setForeground(new java.awt.Color(0, 255, 102)); btn3.setBackground(new java.awt.Color(0, 0, 0)); btn3.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Showcard Gothic", 1, 24)); btn3.setForeground(new java.awt.Color(0, 255, 102)); btn4.setBackground(new java.awt.Color(0, 0, 0)); btn4.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Showcard Gothic", 1, 24)); btn4.setForeground(new java.awt.Color(0, 255, 102)); panel.add(panelbtn); panelbtn.add(btn1); panelbtn.add(btn2); panelbtn.add(btn3); panelbtn.add(btn4); add(panel, BorderLayout.CENTER); setSize(640, 480); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); } public static void main(String... args) { new PanelDemo().setVisible(true); } } ImagePanel.java import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Image; import java.awt.LayoutManager; import javax.swing.ImageIcon; import javax.swing.JPanel; public class ImagePanel extends JPanel { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; String imageFile = "/rsc/img/background.jpg"; public ImagePanel() { super(); } public ImagePanel(String image) { super(); this.imageFile = image; } public ImagePanel(LayoutManager layout) { super(layout); } public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { ImageIcon imageicon = new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource(imageFile)); Image image = imageicon.getImage(); super.paintComponent(g); if (image != null) g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, getWidth(), getHeight(), this); } } Error: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException at javax.swing.ImageIcon.<init>(Unknown Source) at ImagePanel.paintComponent(ImagePanel.java:27) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JLayeredPane.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintChildren(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paintToOffscreen(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$PaintManager.paintDoubleBuffered(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$PaintManager.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(Unknown Source) at java.awt.GraphicsCallback$PaintCallback.run(Unknown Source) at sun.awt.SunGraphicsCallback.runOneComponent(Unknown Source) at sun.awt.SunGraphicsCallback.runComponents(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Container.paint(Unknown Source) at java.awt.Window.paint(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$3.run(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$3.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.security.ProtectionDomain$1.doIntersectionPrivilege(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paintDirtyRegions(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.paintDirtyRegions(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.prePaintDirtyRegions(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager.access$1000(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.RepaintManager$ProcessingRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue.access$200(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue$3.run(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue$3.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.security.ProtectionDomain$1.doIntersectionPrivilege(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpOneEventForFilters(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForFilter(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForHierarchy(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source) at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.run(Unknown Source) Also, if anyone knows of a better way to put a background image on a JPanel, pease do tell.   • Literature in programming and computer science

    - by Peter Turner
    I hope, gentle programmers, that you'll forgive me for not asking a "Soft Question" on theoreticalCS.SE and asking this here. It has recently come to my attention that bigendian came from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. I was pretty surprised when listening to the book on my commute to hear something I'd only heard before in Comp Sci / Engineering classes. I thought it was some sort of nouveau-politically incorrect piece of holdover jargon like Master and Slave drives or Polish Notation. Are there any other incidents, not of politically incorrect jargon, but of literature influencing aspects of computers, programming or software development?

  • How Stuff Works: Fiber Optic Cables [Science]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    Most people are familiar with the general concept of fiber optic cables–light as a method of data transmission–but how do they really work? Find out in this informative video. Bill Hammack, of Engineer Guy Videos, shows us how fiber optic cables work using–of all things–a bucket and a laser. Check out the above video for a glimpse inside how fiber optic cables work and how your analog voice can go to from your phone’s handset to a digital stream and then back to analog sound for the benefit of your friend on the end of the fiber optic transmission cable. • Lightweight Live Linux Image

    - by MA1
    I am working on an application which is being developed in wxPython and C plus using linux core utilities and network support. To be more specific, I only need the following support for following packages/softwares/components. wxPython C Network Support Linux Utilities Vi File System(fdisk/parted, ntfsprogs etc) Basic(cp, mount/umount, mkdir etc) The application will run from a live CD. Currently i am using Fedora 12 with Gnome for live CD. Currently the size of live image is around 350 MB. The size of application is hardly 1 MB. I don't need anything else except above mentioned. Just my application and supporting packages, no desktop etc. So, I need a Lightweight Linux image as smaller as possible providing all the above mentioned packages/components. I am considering the following distributions: Xfce LXDE Fluxbox Enlightenment Any ideas/suggestions?

  • How Fiber Optic Cables Are Made and Laid Across the Sea [Science]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    We don’t know about you but yesterday’s video about how fiber optic cables work just made us more curious. Check out how the cables are made and laid across the sea. In the above video we see how fiber optic strands are manufactured, including how the draw tower mentioned in yesterday’s video works. Once the strands are manufactured, where do they go and how are they used? In the video below we see Alcatel-Lucent’s Ile de Sein, one of the largest and most powerful cable laying ships in the world. Check out the video to see cable storage wells that look like small stadiums. Finding out how the cables are made and what kind of planning and machinery it takes to lay them across the ocean is just as interesting as how they work. • Five Fake Sounds Engineered to Make Your Feel Better [Science]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    As objects in our environment (like cars, ATMs, and phones) have grown lighter and quieter scientists have been carefully engineering their sounds so that they continue to sound like we expect them to. Read on to see how. At the design blog Humans Invent they share five interesting ways that the world around us is being engineered so it sounds the way we expect it to. They start with the example of the car door. Years ago cars were almost entirely steel, the doors were weighty, and when you slammed them it sounded like one big hunk of steel locking into another big hunk of steel (which, in fact, it was). Newer cars are lighter but people still crave that substantial clunk. Humans Invent highlights the effect of consumer desire: A car door is essentially a hollow shell with parts placed inside it. Without careful design the door frame amplifies the rattling of mechanisms inside. Car companies know that if buyers don’t get a satisfying thud when they close the door, it dents their confidence in the entire vehicle. To produce the ideal clunk, car doors are designed to minimise the amount of high frequencies produced (we associate them with fragility and weakness) and emphasise low, bass-heavy frequencies that suggest solidity. The effect is achieved in a range of different ways – car companies have piled up hundreds of patents on the subject – but usually involves some form of dampener fitted in the door cavity. Locking mechanisms are also tailored to produce the right sort of click and the way seals make contact is precisely controlled. On average it takes 1.8 seconds to close a car door but in that time you’re witnessing a strange kind of symphony composed by engineers and designers whose goal is to reassure you that its rock solid. They mention lock mechanisms, something you may never have thought about. A friend of mine had a Ford Focus some years ago and that particular model had electric locks that, instead of giving a satisfying thunk or solid click, made this horrible gates-of-the-prison-buzzing sound that was completely unnerving. Hit up the link below to see how sounds are engineered for car doors, electric motors, ATM machines, and more. 5 Fake Sounds Designed to Help Humans [Humans Invent via Boing Boing] How To Easily Access Your Home Network From Anywhere With DDNSHow To Recover After Your Email Password Is CompromisedHow to Clean Your Filthy Keyboard in the Dishwasher (Without Ruining it)

  • Slick2d Spritesheet showing whole image

    - by BotskoNet
    I'm trying to show a single subimage from a sprite sheet. Using slick2d SpriteSheet class, all it's doing is showing me the entire image, but scaled down to fit the cell dimensions. The image is 96x192 and should have cells of 32x32. The code: SpriteSheet spriteSheet = new SpriteSheet("images/"+file, 32, 32 ); System.out.println("Horiz Count: " + spriteSheet.getHorizontalCount()); System.out.println("Vert Count: " + spriteSheet.getVerticalCount()); System.out.println("Height: " + spriteSheet.getHeight()); System.out.println("Width: " + spriteSheet.getWidth()); System.out.println("Texture Width: " + spriteSheet.getTextureWidth()); System.out.println("Texture Height: " + spriteSheet.getTextureHeight()); Prints: Horiz Count: 3 Vert Count: 6 Height: 192 Width: 96 Texture Width: 0.75 Texture Height: 0.75 Not sure what the texture dimensions refer to, but the rest is entirely accurate. However, when I draw the icon, the entire sprite image shows scaled down to 32x32: Image image = spriteSheet.getSprite(1, 0); // a test image.bind(); GL11.glEnable(GL11.GL_BLEND); GL11.glBlendFunc(GL11.GL_SRC_ALPHA, GL11.GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA); GL11.glBegin(GL11.GL_QUADS); GL11.glTexCoord2f(0,0); GL11.glVertex2f(x,y); GL11.glTexCoord2f(1,0); GL11.glVertex2f(x+image.getWidth(),y); GL11.glTexCoord2f(1,1); GL11.glVertex2f(x+image.getWidth(),y+image.getHeight()); GL11.glTexCoord2f(0,1); GL11.glVertex2f(x,y+image.getHeight()); GL11.glEnd(); GL11.glDisable(GL11.GL_BLEND);

  • The Science Behind Technological Moral Panics

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    Why do some new technologies cause ripples and reactionary backlash in society but others slip into our daily lives almost entirely uncontested? It turns out there’s a rather specific combination of things the new technology must do to upset the public. At Wired they highlight the work of Genevieve Bell and her studies of how society reacts to new technology: Genevieve Bell believes she’s cracked this puzzle. Bell, director of interaction and experience research at Intel, has long studied how everyday people incorporate new tech into their lives. In a 2011 interview with The Wall Street Journal‘s Tech Europe blog, she outlined an interesting argument: To provoke moral panic, a technology must satisfy three rules. First, it has to change our relationship to time. Then it has to change our relationship to space. And, crucially, it has to change our relationship to one another. Individually, each of these transformations can be unsettling, but if you hit all three? Panic!
