  • Automated testing of a website for IE7 javascript errors?

    - by Andreas Bonini
This week I decided to add a new element to a javascript array by copying a similar one from a previous line; unfortunately I forgot to remove the comma so the end result was something like var a = [1, 2, 3,]. The code went live late Friday afternoon just before everyone left for the week-end, and it completely broke everything in Internet Explorer 7 (and lower I assume) since it's such a great browser. Since there was no one to read emails (week-end) it went unnoticed for quite a while, and I really don't want something like this to happen again (especially in my code).. This is not the first of weird IE7 problems; I was wondering if there was a way to automatically test key pages looking for javascript or css errors, or really anything that IE8 would output in its new console in development tools. If there isn't, what do you usually do? You test the website after every change with all the browsers you support? (Something I'll do from now, at least for IE, if there is no way to run automated tests)

  • Making element draggable with Android WebView (ideally, just with Javascript) ?

    - by GJTorikian
I'm building an app with a build target of 1.5 . I have a variable, WebView browser, that is calling loadUrl to load a static HTML page from my assets folder. In that HTML page, the following JavaScript is defined: var supportsTouch = ('createTouch' in document); ... var w = $('wrapper'); w[supportsTouch ? 'touchmove' : 'onmousemove'] = move; w[supportsTouch ? 'touchend' : 'onmouseup'] = function(event){ dragging = false; }; where move is another function that handles the dragging. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work. I cannot figure out a concise list of which touch events are available to Android--is it ontouchmove, or touchmove? Am I supposed to set up an onTouchEvent call back in my Java code, which then launches the JavaScript function?

  • are there any negative implications of sourcing a javascript file that does not actually exist?

    - by dreftymac
If you do script src="/path/to/nonexistent/file.js" in an HTML file and call that in a browser, and there are no dependencies or resources anywhere else in the HTML file that expect the file or code therein to actually exist, is there anything inherently bad-practice about doing this? Yes, it is an odd question. The rationale is the developer is dealing with a CMS that allows custom (self-contained) javascript files to be provided in certain circumstances. The problem is the CMS is not very flexible when it comes to creating conditional includes for javascript. Therefore it is easier to just make references to the self-contained js files regardless of whether they are actually at the specified path. Since no errors are displayed to the user, should this practice be considered a viable option?

  • Simplest way to update a client-side javascript array variable during a ASP.NET AJAX postback in an

    - by Noel
If I want to inject a globally scoped array variable into a page's client-side javascript during a full page postback, I can use: this.Page.ClientScript.RegisterArrayDeclaration("WorkCalendar", "\"" + date.ToShortDateString() + "\""); to declare and populate a client-side javascript array on the page. Nice and simple. But I want to do the same from a async postback from an UpdatePanel. The closest I can figure so far is to create a .js file that just contains the var declaration, update the file during the async postback, and then use a ScriptManagerProxy.Scripts.Add to add the .js file to the page's global scope. Is there anything simpler? r iz doin it wrong?

  • Easiest way to pass a javascript array or its values to a servlet using jQuery's ajax() function

    - by Ankur
I have a Javascript array. I want to pass it's data to a servlet using the ajax() method of jQuery. What is the easiest way to do this. The index values i.e. the i in array[i] are not in order, they are numbers that have meaning themselves, hence I cannot simply loop through and create a GET queryString, or so I believe. Maybe I should be converting the JavaScript array to a JSON Object and sending that to the server ?? I am stumped on this one.

  • Javascript : assign variable in if condition statement, good practice or not?

    - by Michael Mao
Hi all: I moved one years ago from classic OO languages such like Java to Javascript. The following code is definitely not recommended (or even not correct) in Java: if(dayNumber = getClickedDayNumber(dayInfo)) { alert("day number found"); } function getClickedDayNumber(dayInfo) { dayNumber = dayInfo.indexOf("fc-day"); if(dayNumber != -1) //substring found { //normally any calendar month consists of "40" days, so this will definitely pick up its day number. return parseInt(dayInfo.substring(dayNumber+6, dayNumber+8)); } else return false; } Basically I just found out that I can assign a variable to a value in an if condition statement, and immediately check the assigned value as if it is boolean. For a safer bet, I usually separate that into two lines of code, assign first then check the variable, but now that I found this, I am just wondering whether is it good practice or not in the eyes of experienced javascript developers? Many thanks in advance.

  • Does android maps support ground overlay?

    - by wmh1108
I have a weather image I would like to use as an overlay in the google maps android api. I would like to achieve the same result that I get from using GroundOverlay in KML files, such as <GroundOverlay> <name>myimage</name> <Icon> <href>myimage.png</href> <viewBoundScale>0.75</viewBoundScale> </Icon> <LatLonBox> <north>75.6088</north> <south>5.0121</south> <east>182.2805</east> <west>120.6795</west> </LatLonBox> </GroundOverlay> The above will ensure that the 4 corners of my image stay anchored to the 4 lat/long points listed, regardless of scrolling, zooming etc.. Is there a way to accomplish this using the google api/maps provided for android?

  • Javascript + Firebug : "cannot access optimized closure" What does it mean?

    - by interstar
I just got the following error in a piece of javascript (in Firefox 3.5, with Firebug running) cannot access optimized closure I know, superficially, what caused the error. I had a line options.length() instead of options.length Fixing this bug, made the message go away. But I'm curious. What does this mean? What is an optimized closure? Is optimizing an enclosure something that the javascript interpretter does automatically? What does it do?

  • Text box added using javascript doesnot respond as expected to the js attached to it.

    - by Mallika Iyer
Hello, I am adding a text box using javascript: This is what is generated: <dd id="text3-element" style="width: 350px;"> <input type="text" size="50" id="text3" name="text3" onblur="return getFieldValue(this.id);" value=""> </dd> This is what is present in the getFieldValue function: function getFieldValue(id){ var elem = document.getElementById(id); alert(elem.value); return false; } I'm trying to get the value of the field added using javascript when the value of the filed changes. However, I keep getting the value as 'undefined', in spite of entering text into the newly added text box. This does not happen if the form already has a text box to begin with - i.e., if a text box is not being added via a js function. Anything missing / look wrong here? Thanks!

  • How do I pass custom variables to javascript events?

    - by RoboShop
I have a user control with a javascript function which references some controls within the user control. This user control works perfectly when there is only one instance of it, but I'm now building a page where I have two instances of the user control. In IE7, it works fine, but in FireFox, it is getting confused that there is two functions of the exact same name and signature. So on UserControl1, it'll be running the function in UserControl2 and modifying that content. I'm thinking my best solution would be to pass the clientID of the components I need TO the function instead of just directly referencing it in the function. How would I do that? The signature of the javascript function is like this function nodeClicking(sender, args) and I'm calling it in an event like this <telerik:RadTreeView runat="server" ID="OrgUnitTreeView" OnInit="TreeViewLoad" OnClientNodeClicking="**nodeClicking**" EnableViewState="true" DataTextField = "OrganisationUnitName" DataValueField = "OrganisationUnitCode" DataFieldParentID = "ParentOrganisationUnitCode" DataFieldID = "OrganisationUnitCode"> How do I add extra variables to the function signature.

  • [JavaScript] How to get the uri of the .js file itself.

    - by Vikrant Chaudhary
Hi, is there a method in JavaScript by which I can find out the path/uri of the executing script. For example: index.html includes a JavaScript file stuff.js and since stuff.js file depends on ./commons.js, it wants to include it too in the page. Problem is that stuff.js only knows the relative path of ./commons.js from itself and has no clue of full url/path. index.html includes stuff.js file as <script src="http://example.net/js/stuff.js?key=value" /> and stuff.js file wants to read the value of key. How to?

  • Javascript / Flash : When exactly are flash external callback methods triggered ?

    - by felace
I have a flash application using callbacks to javascript functions (eg. when it receives some data over a socket, it'll call a js script which would change the content of a div according to that given data). Afaik, there is no actual mutual exclusion in javascript so I'm not sure if I can/need to simulate something like : callbackFunc() { lock(mutex1) foo unlock(mutex1) } ... someOtherFunc() { lock(mutex1) bar unlock(mutex1) } So, the question is, when are those callbacks called ? Are they simply queued to be executed right after the browser finishes its task or are they triggered randomly ?

  • Javascript Global Variables Not Working as expected. Help?

    - by capri corn
I am new to Javascript. I am facing a problem with global variables. I can't figure out that why the global variables are not working as the code looks ok. Please Help me solve this problem. I will breifly explain the code first.I have some text on a page which changes to text field when clicked. When I define the variables inside the functions body the code starts working fine. When these variables are defined globally as in the following code, the console displays this error: the variable is not defined. Here my code: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <title>Span to Text Box - Demo - DOM</title> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> var textNode = document.getElementById('text'); var textValue = textNode.firstChild.nodeValue; var textboxNode = document.getElementById('textbox'); var doneButton = document.getElementById('done'); function change() { textboxNode.setAttribute('value', textValue); textNode.style.display = 'none'; textboxNode.setAttribute('type','text'); doneButton.setAttribute('type','button'); } function changeBack() { textNode.firstChild.nodeValue = textboxNode.value; textNode.style.display = 'block'; textboxNode.setAttribute('type', 'hidden'); doneButton.setAttribute('type','hidden'); } </script> </head> <body> <p id="text" onClick="change()">Click me!</p> <form onSubmit="return false;"> <input type="hidden" id="textbox" /> <input type="hidden" id="done" onClick="changeBack()" value="Done" /> </form> </body> </html> Please Help! • Why does javascript's "in" operator return true when testing if 0 exists in an array that doesn't co

    - by Mariano Peterson
For example, this returns true, and makes sense: var x = [1,2]; 1 in x; // true This returns false, and makes sense: var x = [1,2]; 3 in x; // false However this returns true, and I don't understand why: var x = [1,2]; 0 in x; You can quickly test it by putting this in your browser's address bar: javascript:var x=[1,2]; alert(0 in x); Why does the "in" operator in Javascript return true when testing if "0" exists in array, even when the array doesn't appear to contain "0"?

  • How to store and access ajax data in javascript without using global variables ?

    - by mike_t2e
I may be missing something obvious here, but how could I rewrite this code so that it doesn't need the theVariable to be a global variable ? <script language="javascript"> theVariable = ""; function setValue() /* called on page load */ { /* make ajax call to the server here */ theVariable = "a string of json data waiting to be eval()'d"; } function getValue() { alert(theVariable); } </script> <input type="button" onClick="javascript:getValue()" value="Get the value"> In my actual situation, the setValue function makes an ajax call to the server, receives a json string and the data from that is accessed when you mouseover various parts of the page. I end up using several global variables which works fine, but is messy and I'd like to know if there's a better and more elegant way of doing it ?

  • Catch and Show an error from a WCF service call in javascript.

    - by cw
Hello, I'm calling a WCF service through javascript and right now it's not showing any errors that might occur on the service side to the user. I have the code below and am looking for a better way to inform the user an error has occured, including the call stack and error message if possible. The service itself throws a FaultException if an error has occured. However, I want to catch that error in the javascript call and show it to the user. Here is the js code to call the service function Save() { var saveInfo = $("._saveInfo").val() app.namspace.interfacetoservice.Save( saveInfo, function(results) { if (results == true) { window.close(); } else { alert("error saving"); } } ); } Thanks for the help!
