• In 10.10, USB 3.0 PCI Express card recognized by lspci but not lsusb or dmesg. How to fix?

  Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. I am not referring to the case of trying to have multiple ng-app declarations on the same page; rather, I mean different sections of a large site that have their own, unique ng-app declaration. As Scott Allen writes in his OdeToCode blog: One scenario I haven't found addressed very well is the scenario where multiple apps exist in the same greater web application and require some shared code on the client. Are there any recommended approaches to take, pitfalls to avoid, or good sample structures of this scenario that you can point to?

• Building XCode From Command Line Issues (Updating Entitlements file location)

  The first error is a warning for complier 'com.apple.compilers.gcc.4_0' I don't know if this is okay and I can just not worry about it. The second tells me that my entitlements file is no longer at that location. I know this and I thought I had correctly updated it in Xcode's info window. This project builds fine in Xcode.   I was reading about the new concurrent collection classes in .NET 4 on James Michael Hare's blog, and the page talking about ConcurrentQueue<T> says: It’s still recommended, however, that for empty checks you call IsEmpty instead of comparing Count to zero. I'm curious - if there is a reason to use IsEmpty instead of comparing Count to 0, why does the class not internally check IsEmpty and return 0 before doing any of the expensive work to count? E.g.: public int Count { get { // Check IsEmpty so we can bail out quicker if (this.IsEmpty) return 0; // Rest of "expensive" counting code } } It seems strange to suggest this if it could be "fixed" so easily with no side-effects?

I am looking to try to get a social network site up and running on Ruby on Rails and was looking at RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series) - Paperback (July 30, 2007) by Michael Hartl. This was published in 2007, however, and the newer reviews say it is not very helpful. Does anyone know if there are any new publications out there that walk you through building a social network site while teaching you the code(rather than just using a out of the box program)? Thanks

• How can I create numbered map markers in Google Maps V3?

  I'm working on a map that has multiple markers on it. These markers use a custom icon, but I'd also like to add numbers on top. I've seen how this has been accomplished using older versions of the API. How can I do this in V3? *Note -- the "title" attribute creates a tooltip when you mouseover the marker, but I want something that will be layered on top of the custom image even when you're not hovering on top of it. • Adjust Title Helper in Ruby on Rails Tutorial 3.2 to deal with & properly

  I am using the title helper from the 3.2 edition of the Ruby on Rails Tutorial by Michael Hartl and just realized a snag with the & character showing up in the title as &Amp instead. The relevant snippet of code is here Official Sample App 2nd Edition The problem. I have a School model and am using the School name on the Show view as follows: <% provide(:title, @school.name) %> If my School has a & in the name, it is being replaced with &Amp in the browser title. Ryan Bates Railscasts site has a similiar title helper that solves this issue this way but it is using content_for instead of provide. Trying to adjust the Rails Tutorial helper, but having trouble getting it work properly. Works great expect for this issue.

• Facebook social reading plugin for Wordpress?

  As you know, a lot of bigger news websites have intorduced "social readers" for Facebook (e.g. https://apps.facebook.com/wpsocialreader/), which log what the user has read into the activity stream ("Michael read..."). Is it possible to integrate similar functionality into a Wordpress blog? Are the relevant API's open? Are there any plugins available? Thanks. In this post, I’ll share best practices on the configuration of data nodes to achieve optimum performance on the latest generations of multi-core, multi-thread CPU designs. Configuring the Data Nodes The configuration of data node threads can be managed in two ways via the config.ini file: - Simply set MaxNoOfExecutionThreads to the appropriate number of threads to be run in the data node, based on the number of threads presented by the processors used in the host or VM. - Use the new ThreadConfig variable that enables users to configure both the number of each thread type to use and also which CPUs to bind them too. The flexible configuration afforded by the multi-threaded data node enhancements means that it is possible to optimise data nodes to use anything from a single CPU/thread up to a 48 CPU/thread server. Co-locating the MySQL Server with a single data node can fully utilize servers with 64 – 80 CPU/threads. It is also possible to co-locate multiple data nodes per server, but this is now only required for very large servers with 4+ CPU sockets dense multi-core processors. 24 Threads and Beyond! An example of how to make best use of a 24 CPU/thread server box is to configure the following: - 8 ldm threads - 4 tc threads - 3 recv threads - 3 send threads - 1 rep thread for asynchronous replication. Each of those threads should be bound to a CPU. It is possible to bind the main thread (schema management domain) and the IO threads to the same CPU in most installations. In the configuration above, we have bound threads to 20 different CPUs. We should also protect these 20 CPUs from interrupts by using the IRQBALANCE_BANNED_CPUS configuration variable in /etc/sysconfig/irqbalance and setting it to 0x0FFFFF. The reason for doing this is that MySQL Cluster generates a lot of interrupt and OS kernel processing, and so it is recommended to separate activity across CPUs to ensure conflicts with the MySQL Cluster threads are eliminated. When booting a Linux kernel it is also possible to provide an option isolcpus=0-19 in grub.conf. The result is that the Linux scheduler won't use these CPUs for any task. Only by using CPU affinity syscalls can a process be made to run on those CPUs. By using this approach, together with binding MySQL Cluster threads to specific CPUs and banning CPUs IRQ processing on these tasks, a very stable performance environment is created for a MySQL Cluster data node. On a 32 CPU/Thread server: - Increase the number of ldm threads to 12 - Increase tc threads to 6 - Provide 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts. - The number of send and receive threads should, in most cases, still be sufficient. On a 40 CPU/Thread server, increase ldm threads to 16, tc threads to 8 and increment send and receive threads to 4. On a 48 CPU/Thread server it is possible to optimize further by using: - 12 tc threads - 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts - Avoid using IO threads and main thread on same CPU - Add 1 more receive thread. Summary As both this and the previous post seek to demonstrate, the multi-threaded data node extensions not only serve to increase performance of MySQL Cluster, they also enable users to achieve significantly improved levels of utilization from current and future generations of massively multi-core, multi-thread processor designs.   I am looking for an example of how to use the new DataServiceState Save and Restore methods in a WP7 application in order to tombstone a datacontext - I cannot find any examples and the approach I used resulted in an exception this saves the data context correctly PhoneApplicationService.Current.State["DataContext"] = DataServiceState.Save(this.Model.Entities); this attempts to restore it after the app is re-activated var dc = (PhoneApplicationService.Current.State["DataContext"] as DataServiceState).Restore(); but throws an exception An item could not be added to the collection. When items in a DataServiceCollection are tracked by the DataServiceContext, new items cannot be added before items have been loaded into the collection. This is the same exception I get if I try to reload a datacontext that I stored "directly" (without using the DataServiceState.Save method) in the PhoneApplicationService.Current.State. I cannot find any offical documentation on the new ODATA v2 DataServiceState class or examples. thanks Michael

  Hi, I'm starting a new project and I'm looking into using a dependency container (Castle Windsor) to help when it comes to unit testing. One of the things that is a little frustrating is that after I've finished using an object I have to tell the container to "release" the object. I understand the reasoning behind doing this, but it's still cumbersome to have to remember to do this. So, my question is, is there a way I can make the "releasing" of an object automatic so I don't have to remember to release it? Kind Regards Michael

The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #16) What is it? Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/. Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not. How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. Why do I care?  It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax. Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • How to batch retrieve documents with mongoDB?

  Hello everyone, I have an application that queries data from a mongoDB using the mongoDB C# driver something like this: public void main() { foreach (int i in listOfKey) { list.add(getObjectfromDB(i); } } public myObject getObjFromDb(int primaryKey) { document query = new document(); query["primKey"] = primaryKey; document result= mongo["myDatabase"]["myCollection"].findOne(query); return parseObject(result); } On my local (development) machine to get 100 object this way takes less than a second. However, I recently moved the database to a server on the internet, and this query takes about 30 seconds to execute for the same number of object. Furthermore, looking at the mongoDB log, it seems to open about 8-10 connections to the DB to perform this query. So what I'd like to do is have the query the database for an array of primaryKeys and get them all back at once, then do the parsing in a loop afterwards, using one connection if possible. How could I optimize my query to do so? Thanks, --Michael

So the end result would start the entire list over again with Santa at the top. Does that make any sense? • C# XNA 4.0 multitextured cube

  So I am following this tutorial on how to draw a cube in XNA and I ran into a problem. Ok so my shader can only have texture right? I need to have a texture on the front and back of my cube. So I thought I could just have both textures stored in one texture. Problem is I do not know how to map out my UV coords to do so. (I tried dividing by 2 and such with no luck...).
