  • What is the best method for ripping DVD to stream to Xbox 360?

    What is the best method to rip/encode a standard definition DVD, to be streamed to a Xbox360 from a Vista Media Center pc (preferably using free software). I’ve found tons of tutorials on the web explaining how to create wmv’s from vob files using FFMpeg, but every combination of settings that I have tried has resulted in very poor video quality. I’ve also tried various video conmversion tools, but everything seems to result in poor video quality, or audio that is out of sync with the picture. Please help!

  • How can I disable the css {position:fixed} side-bar on Slashdot?

    When I look at a story on Slashdot, I see a side-bar that sits constantly in the upper-left corner. Every time I open a story, I have to click on the "slash" sign in its upper-right corner. How can I disable it, so it will always have css position absolute, relative or static? Is there an option for it? Because I find it is slowing my browser down when I am scrolling the page.   • Easy management of multiple connections

    Hi, on a Windows 7 machine I need to switch back and forth two connections: the LAN connection (that works behind a proxy) and a wireless connection via a USB modem. This requires every time to activate / deactivate two connections in the manager and switch on / off the LAN settings. I don't think there is some way to keep two connections alive and specify which one to use based on the program, but my question is: is there a simple little utility that makes switching the connection one-click easy and fast?     We are using the basic Verizon router but it sucks so we're looking for a new one that allows us to limit users and our hadoop cluster to certain limits. Our problem is one person can start downloading something and kill the network and every hour we download logs into our cluster but it floods the network unless we rate limit it. Ideally we want to be able to say: total: 35 mbps Hadoop Cluster (15 mbps) Phones (1 mbps) Office(25 people) (19mbps but no one machine can have more than 5mbps)

    I've commented out a line in the crontab on a debian server, which I guess was there by default yet was causing me to get error emails every hour: # m h dom mon dow user command 17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly However, the error emails keep coming in as if it hasn't been commented out. The error emails: Subject: Cron <root@(none)> root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly (failed) /bin/sh: root: not found Any ideas?

    I have a proxy server that runs Ubuntu Server 11.10, Squid 2.7.STABLE9. I installed sarg (version 2.3.1 Sep-18-2010) to generate reports using the ordinary apt-get install, and added a cron job to generate a report of the day every 5 minutes (that will overwrite the 5-minutes-older one): */5 * * * * /root/proxy_report.sh And the content of /root/proxy_report.sh is: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/sarg -nd `date +"%d/%m/%Y"` > /dev/null 2>&1 And I added another cron job to generate a full report every hour at :32 (not to collide with the 5 minutes job): */32 * * * * /root/proxy_report_full.sh And the content of /root/proxy_report_full.sh is : #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/sarg -n > /dev/null 2>&1 And I added a small script to remove the yesterday full report (the full report that ends in yesterday that won't be overwritten by the new today full report) in /etc/rc.local to run at startup: /usr/bin/rm_yesterday.sh &>> /var/log/rm_yesterday Where /usr/bin/rm_yesterday.sh: #!/bin/bash find /var/www/sarg/ | grep `date -d Apr1 +"%Y%b%d"`-* | grep -v `date +"%Y%b%d"` | xargs rm -rf * Apr1 is the starting date of the proxy... ** I've placed it in /usr/bin to be mounted early at startup... That arrangement went OK for about a month and a half, except for one time I noticed some errors and reports wasn't generated, and fixed that by making an offset (the two minutes in 32 of the second cron job). However, it then started not to generate reports anymore. By manually trying to generate it it gives the following error: root@proxy-server:~# sarg -n SARG: getword_atoll loop detected after 3 bytes. Or it comes with the standard Ubuntu? I don't remember I installed it manuallly. The question is: What could've gone wrong? Does it have something to do with rotating the log? How can I trace the error and start generating reports again?

  • Lazarus Form Recovery for Safari?

    I use Lazarus a lot on Chrome and FireFox. Well, not a lot, but it's great for crashing when you're writing something online in a form that doesn't automatically save what you're writing. Plus, this should be default in every browser ANYway, and not built-in any web site (such as gmail). So, is there any such option for Safari? Does Saft do that? Just by looking at the home page, it seems to me like bloatware to Safari 4.

    Every port on my server is blocked except port 222 which is were ssh connects too. This server is pretty much a backup server, and I have my clients rsync to it. I do this by using ssh's port forwarding (-P 222 -L 873:myserver.com:873), however, I want to do this with just using the rsync command. Is that possible?

Windows 7 still boots but every single action takes an aeon, and it is definitely due to a harddisk error not due to any spyware. I'm using the Ubuntu partition now. I've ordered a new harddrive but my laptop didn't come with a Windows 7 install disk (I think I was meant to make one with the windows 7 tools). So how can I install Windows 7 on my new harddrive?

  • Setting up Konico Minolta 1400w printer on windows vista 32bit

    One of my neighbors asked me to help them setup this old printer on their computer (thier other printer is broken) so after fighting with it for about an hour but to no avail.   • Moving multiple folders all at once in Outlook

    Constantly at my shop, we are moving Outlook (or other email program) files between computers or Windows Installations, and sometimes, people have HUNDREDS of folders. Is there a quick way to move ALL the folders from multiple data files (*.PST) into one single file, without dragging each and every folder? No, I don't want to move the Inbox folder into the other Inbox folder for the quick move, I want something simple like selecting all folders and moving that way. Does such a method exist in any version of Outlook?
