  I heard that the MPM-ITK module for Apache can change Apache server's behaviour to access some folder / file using the UID or GID from the default UID (www-data) into a given UID on the configuration. For example: <IfModule mpm_itk_module> AssignUserId user group </IfModule> Is it possible to make the username and group a variable? I want to make Apache access the /home folder as its owner. For example /home/me can only be accessed by the user me, while /home/you can only be accessed you.

• How do I encrypt but share a number of folders?

  I want to achieve the following functionality. Is it possible? Boot up computer (possibly via WakeOnLan or WakeOnPlan). Either be automatically logged in, or log in via login screen, or log in remotely. I change this behavior occasionally, so full disk encryption wouldn't work for me because it requires a password on bootup (which would it would prevent the remote bootup options, and the automatic login option). I am only interested in encrypting data, not the entire harddrive. Once logged in either: a launcher/tray icon is available to launch encryption app (preferred) run encryption app from the dash Prompted to unlock encrypted folder(s) individually. Unlocked folders are available to: me, apps I am running (e.g. editors, SpiderOak) Ideally, folders that I share with bindfs can be locked/unlocked by other users too. A key point is that once I have unlocked an encrypted folder, I don't want to have to think about it again. I currently achieve this via TrueCrypt (except for the last part). Unfortunately TrueCrypt isn't well integrated with Ubuntu (licensing issues prevent Debian from including it in their repo, the interface isn't quite integrated with Unity, setting it as a startup app doesn't quite work, sharing encrypted folders isn't really part of its design). Is there an alternative to TrueCrypt that is better integrated with the Ubuntu GUI and would suit this workflow?

• SSDT gotcha – Moving a file erases code analysis suppressions

  I discovered a little wrinkle in SSDT today that is worth knowing about if you are managing your database schemas using SSDT. In short, if a file is moved to a different folder in the project then any code analysis suppressions that reference that file will disappear from the suppression file. This makes sense if you think about it because the paths stored in the suppression file are no longer valid, but you probably won’t be aware of it until it happens to you. If you don’t know what code analysis is or you don’t know what the suppression file is then you can probably stop reading now, otherwise read on for a simple short demo. Let’s create a new project and add a stored procedure to it called sp_dummy. Naming stored procedures with a sp_ prefix is generally frowned upon and hence SSDT static code analysis will look for occurrences of this and flag them. So, the next thing we need to do is turn on static code analysis in the project properties: A subsequent build causes a code analysis warning as we might expect: Let’s suppose we actually don’t mind stored procedures with sp_ prefixes, we can just right-click on the message to suppress and get rid of it: That causes a suppression file to get created in our project: Notice that the suppression file contains a relative path to the file that has had the suppression placed upon it. Now if we simply move the file within our project to a new folder notice that the suppression that we just created gets removed from the suppression file: As I alluded above this behaviour is intuitive because the path originally stored in the suppression file is no longer relevant but you’re probably not going to be aware of it until it happens to you and messages that you thought you had suppressed start appearing again.   While coding for Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight, I was really disappointed with the built-in MessageBox class, so I found an alternative. My disappointment was the fact that: Display of the messagebox causes the phone to vibrate (!) Display of the messagebox causes the phone to make an annoying sound. You can only have "ok" and "cancel" buttons (no other button captions). • Can't rename/move files from OSX that were copied from NTFS

  Hello- I recently had data recovered and it was sent back to me on what I think is an NTFS drive. I copied all the files over to a file share I have on a Linux box, that's ext4. Now I have that share mounted on my OSX machine, and I can't move or rename most of the files. However, in a couple cases I was able to rename a folder after the third try. Another time I was able to rename a folder once, but not again. All the permissions are showing up the same on the command-line -- I can't see any differences between the permissions on any of the files/folders. Any clues??? Thanks.

• Why am I getting this SVN can't move .svn/tmp/x to trunk/x error?

  I am trying to checkout into the virtualbox shared folder with svn 1.7 in ubuntu 12.04 running as a guest on a windows 7 host. I had read that this error was a 1.6 problem, and updated - but am still receiving the error: svn: E000071: Can't move '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/.svn/tmp/svn-hsOG5X' to '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/trunk/statement.aspx?d=201108': Protocol error I found this blog post about the same error in a mac environment, but am finding that changing the folder/file permissions does nothing. vim .svn/entires just has the number 12 - does this need to be changed? Thank you for any assistance! (just another reason for why I prefer git...)

• Automating Nightly Build Installation?

  Every night a new build of my program is made and copied to a /Builds/ folder. I have a Windows machine that I want to have uninstall the program then install the latest version of the program from the /Builds/ folder. Currently the build results in two separate setup.exe files which are InstallShield installation wizard executables. I want this to happen every night after the build finishes: Uninstall first component. Uninstall second component. Install newest build of first component using setup.exe. Install newest build of second component using setup.exe. I figured that there probably already exists a software solution for automating installations like this. Are there any software solutions out there than can do what I need? Preferrably for free?

• How to remove ActiveX Add on from IE 7 (normal method does not work)

  Hi, Does anybody know how to remove an ActiveX control from Internet Explorer 7.0 ? I had been deleting and adding this control numerous times using the built in delete button in Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable. This is required for me to test a downloader ActiveX used for a website. It had always shown up in the "Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32 bit) section of the drop down which activates the delete button. However, all of a sudden it now appears under "Add ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" and I cannot delete it from there. The "in folder" column says it's in the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder... But it does not appear to be there either... Thanks, James

• FreeType2 Crash on FT_Init_FreeType

  I'm currently trying to learn how to use the FreeType2 library for drawing fonts with OpenGL. However, when I start the program it immediately crashes with the following error: "(Can't correctly start the application (0xc000007b))" Commenting the FT_Init_FreeType removes the error and my game starts just fine. I'm wondering if it's my code or has something to do with loading the dll file. My code: #include "SpaceGame.h" #include <ft2build.h> #include FT_FREETYPE_H //Freetype test FT_Library library; Game::Game(int Width, int Height) { //Freetype FT_Error error = FT_Init_FreeType(&library); if(error) { cout << "Error occured during FT initialisation" << endl; } And my current use of the FreeType2 files. Inside my bin folder (where debug .exe is located) is: freetype6.dll, libfreetype.dll.a, libfreetype-6.dll. In Code::Blocks, I've linked to the lib and include folder of the FreeType 2.3.5.1 version. And included a compiler flag: -lfreetype My program starts perfectly fine if I comment out the FT_Init function which means the includes, and library files should be fine. I can't find a solution to my problem and google isn't helping me so any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Recurring events repeatedly saves a draft every minute

  Using Outlook 2010, some of my recurring (planned, not drafts) events is saving a draft to my Drafts folder every single minute as long as it's active. An example taken from real life is that I have a calendar entry (Appointment) occuring every day from 24-09-2012 until 28-09-2012 from 08:00 to 16:00 (GMT+1) with a blue category, only one participant (me) with subject but without a place. So every minute from 24-09-2012 until 28-09-2012 from 08:00 to 16:00, but not from 16:00 to 08:00, a new draft is automatically saved in my Drafts folder. How do I get rid of that behaviour? Addition here: Removing the offending event just allows a new one to take its place. There doesn't seem to be much on the sites - Microsoft calls it a "personal" issue, but there are more and more instances.

• "Serious errors found HF checking the drive for /home" After Moving /home to external HFSplus partition

  I just installed Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" and Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Pro. Using these instructions: tuxation.com/creating-home-partition-mac-linux.html . After changing the location of my home folder to the new location, it gives me the error in the title, and my username no longer appears in the login screen. Using the "Other" option with my username seems to make it try to log in, but the screen quickly flashes between blank and a shell before kicking me back to the login screen without notice. I'm trying to share my home folder between Mac OS X and Ubuntu, using an hfsplus partition (unjournaled) between the two. The home partition seems to mount fine as /home, and I am able to modify it under Ubuntu. Below is the line I've added to fstab: /dev/sda3 /home hfsplus defaults 0 1 I should also note that I changed my account's username and home directory location to match this, though I've double checked that and everything seems in order there... Thank you in advance for any assistance. Edit: It seems that the /etc/passwd file didn't have my new home directory's location in it, so I changed that, and I am now able to log into my account, although I am still not listed in the login screen, and my username in the menu on the top right shows up as "[Invalid UTF-8]"...

• Take ownership in windows 7/8 does not work

  I have taken ownership of my external HDD and now I should be able to access every folder but I can't. There are numerous folders for which I don't have the ownership of. I tried taking ownership of those but after I close/reopen an explorer windows the ownership resets itself to what it was before. For example I have a folder which now has this S-1-5-21-95661877-3860777391-1413521220-1000 and a subfolder of this which has Unable to display current owner. If I take the ownership of the subfolder it shows me as the owner but I still can't access it; I get "You don't currently have permission ...".

  i am trying to install an init.d script, to run celery for scheduling tasks. Here is the steps i followed: copied the file celeryd and pasted it in folder /etc/init.d/ created a configuration file celeryd in folder /etc/default/ now when i tried to start it by sudo /etc/init.d/celeryd start, it throws error sudo: /etc/init.d/celeryd: command not found I googled about how to install init.d, i got this SO-question. it says to issue a uname -a and when i does i get this: Linux capsonesystem8-desktop 3.2.0-43-generic-pae #68-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 15 03:55:10 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux and also it says use utils like insserv to enable init.d script so tried: insserv /etc/init.d/celeryd but it throws error insserv: command not found so i tried to install insserv sudo apt-get install insserv. but it say aleady installed: insserv is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 222 not upgraded. So how to install init.d script?? Any help will be appreciated. update1: when i tried: $ sh -x /etc/init.d/celeryd start it reveal some errors. may be that is why the service won’t start. update2: I cleared all the errors when i run $ sh -x /etc/init.d/celeryd start but still sudo /etc/init.d/celeryd start throws command not found error

• Fast or automatic way to organize iphone/ipod apps

  Is there a tool or application that can help me quickly organize my iphone applications? The standard way of dragging and dropping 1 application at a time in folder is too frustrating for me. I gave up after 1 hour of trying... I found it to be such a waste of time ... I am looking for an application to automatically organize my apps in the standard folder categories at least (Productivity, Navigation, Photography, etc). I was not able to find one in the iTunes store. Any suggestions?

• What is an elegant way to install non-repository software in 12.04?

  Perhaps I missed something when Canonical removed the "Create launcher" option from the right click menu, because I've really been missing that little guy. For me, it was the preferred way to install software that comes not in a .deb, but in a tar.gz, for example. (Note: in that tar.gz I have a folder with the compiled files, I'm NOT compiling from source) I just downloaded the new Eclipse IDE and extracted the tar.gz to my /usr folder. Now, I'd like to add it to my desktop and dash so it can be started easily. Intuitively I would right click the desktop and create a launcher. After this I'd copy the .desktop to /usr/share/applications. However, creating a launcher is not possible. My question: How would you install an already compiled tar.gz that you have downloaded from the internet? Below are a few things I've seen, but these are all more time-consuming than the right click option. If you have any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks! Manual copy & create a .desktop file: manually Simply extract the archive to /usr. Create a new text file, adding something along the lines of the code block below: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Exec="/usr/local/eclipse42/eclipse" Name="Eclipse 4.2" Icon=/home/tomas/icons/eclipse.svg Rename this file to eclipse42.desktop and make it executable. • problems with WindowsImageBackup and write protected drives

  On Windows 7 I created a System image of my computer (C: and reserved partition) onto a USB drive. No problem. I then formatted the C: and installed the OS -- no problem Now I would like use the System Image and get back some of my documents etc. But I can't get access wo the WindowsImageBackup folder on the USB drive 1) Somehow the drive is write protected --- how did that happen? How do I unprotect that drive. 2) I can't access the WindowsImageBackup folder because I suspect the ACL is out of wack with my new SID. I would add my new SID to the ACL but I can't because the drive is write protected At the moment I'm completely disconnected from my files, which I thought (and still hope) are backed up. Understandably, panic is now setting in.

• IIS: changing site's home directory while site is running

  I'm trying to understand exactly what IIS 6.0 (on Windows Server 2003) does when I change the "Local Path" of a web site's Home Directory while the site is running. (Specifically with regard to ASP.NET applications.) I'm trying to build support for or against this practice in a deployment scenario: e.g. deploy the new code alongside the old code, then simply switch the IIS web site's local path to the folder containing the new code. IIS seems to handle this gracefully, but I notice that w3wp.exe still keeps some handles on the old code folder after the change. That's strange to me, because I would have expected IIS to recycle the application pool if this happened. Is this safe? Is the behavior well-defined?

• How to use BT or emule across 2 or more hard drives?

  One difficulty with BT or emule is that, when the hard drive is full, we constantly need to move older files to a new hard drive so that we can download newer files. We can change BT or emule's setting so that the folder for downloading points to the new hard drive, but then, what if emule haven't finished downloading for some files that are hard to find, and it is 92% done... in that case, we would like to keep the old setting so that when the last 8% arrives, it can go into the correct file. (and same for BT, if we haven't finished some file or if we want to seed something later). So is there a good way to let BT or emule point to 2 hard drives, or somehow let the new hard drive "merge" into the existing hard drive / folder?

Over at Hack A Day, Caleb Kraft shares his simple phone hack inspired by his VW bus. He writes: In case you haven’t noticed from my many comments on the subject, I drive a VW bus. It is a 1976 Westfalia camper with sage green paint and green plaid upholstery. I absolutely love it and so does the rest of my family. We go for drives in the country as well as camping regularly. We have found that the kids have a hard time communicating with us while we’re going higher speeds. These things aren’t the quietest automobiles in the world. Pushing this bread loaf shaped hunk of steel down the road with an engine that might top out at 75hp results in wind noise, engine noise, and of course, vibration. I decided to employ a really old hack to put two functional telephones in the bus so my kids can talk to my wife (or whoever the passenger is) without screaming quite so loud. This hack is extremely easy, fairly cheap, and can be done in just a few minutes. The result is a functional intercom that you could use pretty much anywhere!
