  During recovery Oracle writes the following error: RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 seq 9 lowscn 4034762 I have used in mount mode this command: change archivelog all crosscheck; delete expired archivelog all; Then restore and tried to recover again:But still RMAN-06054 error.Than I wrote: run{ SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; RESTORE DATABASE; RECOVER DATABASE; } It helped me to recover database...But after that when I do the backup and then recover the same error occurs and solution is the same... I wonder to solve this problem without SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; maybe I should unregister this archive log from control file(I am using control file not catalog) Can you tell me how?

• Floating Panels and Describe Windows in Oracle SQL Developer

  One of the challenges I face as I try to share tips about our software is that I tend to assume there are features that you just ‘know about.’ Either they’re so intuitive that you MUST know about them, or it’s a feature that I’ve been using for so long I forget that others may have never even seen it before. I want to cover two of those today - Describe (DESC) – SHIFT+F4 Floating Panels My super-exciting desktop SQL Developer and Describe DESC or Describe is an Oracle SQL*Plus command. It shows what a table or view is composed of in terms of it’s column definition. Here’s an example: SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Fri Sep 21 14:25:37 2012 Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved. Connected to: Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - Production With the Partitioning, OLAP, Data Mining and Real Application Testing options SQL> desc beer; Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------- -------- ---------------------------- BREWERY NOT NULL VARCHAR2(100) CITY VARCHAR2(100) STATE VARCHAR2(100) COUNTRY VARCHAR2(100) ID NUMBER SQL> You can get the same information – and a good bit more – in SQL Developer using the SQL Developer DESC command. You invoke it with SHIFT+F4. It will open a floating (non-modal!) window with the information you want. Here’s an example: I can see my column definitions, constratins, stats, privs, etc A few ‘cool’ things you should be aware of: I can open as many as I want, and still work in my worksheet, browser, etc. I can also DESC an index, user, or most any other database object I can of course move them off my primary desktop display The DESC panel’s are read-only. I can’t drop a constraint from within the DESC window of a given table. But for dragging columns into my worksheet, and checking out the stats for my objects as I query them – it’s very, very handy. Try This Right Now Type ‘scott.emp’ (or some other table you have), place your cursor on the text, and hit SHIFT+F4. You’ll see the EMP object open. Now click into a column name in the columns page. Drag it into your worksheet. It will paste that column name into your query. This is an alternative for those that don’t like our code insight feature or dragging columns off the connection tree (new for v3.2!) Got it? SQL Developer’s Floating Panels Ok, let’s talk about a similar feature. Did you know that any dockable panel from the View menu can also be ‘floated?’ One of my favorite features is the SQL History. Every query I run is recorded, and I can recall them later without having to remember what I ran and when. And I USUALLY use the keyboard shortcuts for this. Let your trouble float away…if only it were so easy as a right-click in the real world. But sometimes I still want to see my recall list without having to give up my screen real estate. So I just mouse-right click on the panel tab and select ‘Float.’ Then I move it over to my secondary display – see the poorly lit picture in the beginning of this post. And that’s it. Simple, I know. But I thought you should know about these two things!

• Why doesn't Unity's OnCollisionEnter give me surface normals, and what's the most reliable way to get them?

  Unity's on collision event gives you a Collision object that gives you some information about the collision that happened (including a list of ContactPoints with hit normals). But what you don't get is surface normals for the collider that you hit. Here's a screenshot to illustrate. The red line is from ContactPoint.normal and the blue line is from RaycastHit.normal. Is this an instance of Unity hiding information to provide a simplified API? Or do standard 3D realtime collision detection techniques just not collect this information? And for the second part of the question, what's a surefire and relatively efficient way to get a surface normal for a collision? I know that raycasting gives you surface normals, but it seems I need to do several raycasts to accomplish this for all scenarios (maybe a contact point/normal combination misses the collider on the first cast, or maybe you need to do some average of all the contact points' normals to get the best result). My current method: Back up the Collision.contacts[0].point along its hit normal Raycast down the negated hit normal for float.MaxValue, on Collision.collider If that fails, repeat steps 1 and 2 with the non-negated normal If that fails, try steps 1 to 3 with Collision.contacts[1] Repeat 4 until successful or until all contact points exhausted. Give up, return Vector3.zero. This seems to catch everything, but all those raycasts make me queasy, and I'm not sure how to test that this works for enough cases. Is there a better way?

• Protecting offline IRM rights and the error "Unable to Connect to Offline database"

  One of the most common problems I get asked about Oracle IRM is in relation to the error message "Unable to Connect to Offline database". This error message is a result of how Oracle IRM is protecting the cached rights on the local machine and if that cache has become invalid in anyway, this error is thrown. Offline rights and security First we need to understand how Oracle IRM handles offline use. The way it is implemented is one of the main reasons why Oracle IRM is the leading document security solution and demonstrates our methodology to ensure that solutions address both security and usability and puts the balance of these two in your control. Each classification has a set of predefined roles that the manager of the classification can assign to users. Each role has an offline period which determines the amount of time a user can access content without having to communicate with the IRM server. By default for the context model, which is the classification system that ships out of the box with Oracle IRM, the offline period for each role is 3 days. This is easily changed however and can be as low as under an hour to as long as years. It is also possible to switch off the ability to access content offline which can be useful when content is very sensitive and requires a tight leash. So when a user is online, transparently in the background, the Oracle IRM Desktop communicates with the server and updates the users rights and offline periods. This transparent synchronization period is determined by the server and communicated to all IRM Desktops and allows for users rights to be kept up to date without their intervention. This allows us to support some very important scenarios which are key to a successful IRM solution. A user doesn't have to make any decision when going offline, they simply unplug their laptop and they already have their offline periods synchronized to the maximum values. Any solution that requires a user to make a decision at the point of going offline isn't going to work because people forget to do this and will therefore be unable to legitimately access their content offline. If your rights change to REMOVE your access to content, this also happens in the background. This is very useful when someone has an offline duration of a week and they happen to make a connection to the internet 3 days into that offline period, the Oracle IRM Desktop detects this online state and automatically updates all rights for the user. This means the business risk is reduced when setting long offline periods, because of the daily transparent sync, you can reflect changes as soon as the user is online. Of course, if they choose not to come online at all during that week offline period, you cannot effect change, but you take that risk in giving the 7 day offline period in the first place. If you are added to a NEW classification during the day, this will automatically be synchronized without the user even having to open a piece of content secured against that classification. This is very important, consider the scenario where a senior executive downloads all their email but doesn't open any of it. Disconnects the laptop and then gets on a plane. During the flight they attempt to open a document attached to a downloaded email which has been secured against an IRM classification the user was not even aware they had access to. Because their new role in this classification was automatically synchronized their experience is a good one and the document opens. More information on how the Oracle IRM classification model works can be found in this article by Martin Abrahams. So what about problems accessing the offline rights database? So onto the core issue... when these rights are cached to your machine they are stored in an encrypted database. The encryption of this offline database is keyed to the instance of the installation of the IRM Desktop and the Windows user account. Why? Well what you do not want to happen is for someone to get their rights for content and then copy these files across hundreds of other machines, therefore getting access to sensitive content across many environments. The IRM server has a setting which controls how many times you can cache these rights on unique machines. This is because people typically access IRM content on more than one computer. Their work desktop, a laptop and often a home computer. So Oracle IRM allows for the usability of caching rights on more than one computer whilst retaining strong security over this cache. So what happens if these files are corrupted in someway? That's when you will see the error, Unable to Connect to Offline database. The most common instance of seeing this is when you are using virtual machines and copy them from one computer to the next. The virtual machine software, VMWare Workstation for example, makes changes to the unique information of that virtual machine and as such invalidates the offline database. How do you solve the problem? Resolution is however simple. You just delete all of the offline database files on the machine and they will be recreated with working encryption when the Oracle IRM Desktop next starts. However this does mean that the IRM server will think you have your rights cached to more than one computer and you will need to rerequest your rights, even though you are only going to be accessing them on one. Because it still thinks the old cache is valid. So be aware, it is good practice to increase the server limit from the default of 1 to say 3 or 4. This is done using the Enterprise Manager instance of IRM. So to delete these offline files I have a simple .bat file you can use; Download DeleteOfflineDBs.bat Note that this uses pskillto stop the irmBackground.exe from running. This is part of the IRM Desktop and holds open a lock to the offline database. Either kill this from task manager or use pskillas part of the script.

• What’s Your Tax Strategy? Automate the Tax Transfer Pricing Process!

  Does your business operate in multiple countries? Well, whether you like it or not, many local and international tax authorities inspect your tax strategy.  Legal, effective tax planning is perceived as a “moral” issue. CEOs are being asked to testify on their process of tax transfer pricing between multinational legal entities.  Marc Seewald, Senior Director of Product Management for EPM Applications specializing in all tax subjects and Product Manager for Oracle Hyperion Tax Provisioning, and Bart Stoehr, Senior Director of Product Strategy for Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management joined me for a discussion/podcast on this interesting subject.  So what exactly is “tax transfer pricing”? Marc defined it this way. “Tax transfer pricing is a profit allocation methodology required to be used by multinational corporations. Specifically, the ultimate goal of the transfer pricing is to ensure that the global multinational pays their fair share of income tax in each of their local markets. Specifically, it prevents companies from unfairly moving profit from ‘high tax’ countries to ‘low tax’ countries.” According to Marc, in today’s global economy, profitability can be significantly impacted by goods and services exchanged between the related divisions within a single multinational company.  To ensure that these cost allocations are done fairly, there are rules that govern the process. These rules ensure that intercompany allocations fairly represent the actual nature of the businesses activity- as if two divisions were unrelated - and provide a clear audit trail of how the costs have been allocated to prove that allocations fall within reasonable ranges.  What are the repercussions of improper tax transfer pricing? How important is it? Tax transfer pricing allocations can materially impact the amount of overall corporate income taxes paid by a company worldwide, in some cases by hundreds of millions of dollars!  Since so much tax revenue is at stake, revenue agencies like the IRS, and international regulatory bodies like the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are pushing to reform and clarify reporting for tax transfer pricing. Most recently the OECD announced an “Action Plan for Base Erosion and Profit Shifting”. As Marc explained, the times are changing and companies need to be responsive to this issue. “It feels like every other week there is another company being accused of avoiding taxes,” said Marc. Most recently, Caterpillar was accused of avoiding billions of dollars in taxes. In the last couple of years, Apple, GE, Ikea, and Starbucks, have all been accused of tax avoidance. It’s imperative that companies like these have a clear and auditable tax transfer process that enables them to justify tax transfer pricing allocations and avoid steep penalties and bad publicity. Transparency and efficiency are what is needed when it comes to the tax transfer pricing process. Bart explained that tax transfer pricing is driving a deeper inspection of profit recognition specifically focused on the tax element of profit.  However, allocations needed to support tax profitability are nearly identical in process to allocations taking place in other parts of the finance organization. For example, the methods and processes necessary to arrive at tax profitability by legal entity are no different than those used to arrive at fully loaded profitability for a product line. In fact, there is a great opportunity for alignment across these two different functions.So it seems that tax transfer pricing should be reflected in profitability in general. Bart agreed and told us more about some of the critical sub-processes of an overall tax transfer pricing process within the Oracle solution for tax transfer pricing.  “First, there is a ton of data preparation, enrichment and pre-allocation data analysis that is managed in the Oracle Hyperion solution. This serves as the “data staging” to the next, critical sub-processes.  From here, we leverage the Oracle EPM platform’s ability to re-use dimensions and legal entity driver data and financial data with Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management (HPCM).  Within HPCM, we manage the driver data, define the legal entity to legal entity allocation rules (like cost plus), and have the option to test out multiple, simultaneous tax transfer pricing what-if scenarios.  Once processed, a tax expert can evaluate the effectiveness of any one scenario result versus another via a variance analysis configured with HPCM’s pre-packaged reporting capability known as Oracle Hyperion SmartView for Office.”   Further, Bart explained that the ability to visibly demonstrate how a cost or revenue has been allocated is really helpful and auditable.  “HPCM’s Traceability Maps are that visual representation of all allocation flows that have been executed and is the tax transfer analyst’s best friend in maintaining clear documentation for tax transfer pricing audits. Simply click and drill as you inspect the chain of allocation definitions and results. Once final, the post-allocated tax data can be compared to the GL to create invoices and journal entries for posting to your GL system of choice.  Of course, there is a framework for overall governance of the journal entries, allocation percentages, and reporting to include necessary approvals.” Lastly, Marc explained that the key value in using the Oracle Hyperion solution for tax transfer pricing is that it keeps everything in alignment in one single place. Specifically, Oracle Hyperion effectively becomes the single book of record for the GAAP, management, and the tax set of books. There are many benefits to having one source of the truth. These include EFFICIENCY, CONTROLS and TRANSPARENCY.So, what’s your tax strategy? • hyper-v fails when attaching more disk to VM. The VM won't start and generates an error

  I'm lost at what to do about this: Hi... System: Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V farm running with failover cluster with a EVA 4400 as backend. When I attach a new disk to a VM it fails when I try to start it. If I move the VM to another, say node 1, I can add the disk and I can get them to start. If I move the VM back to node 2 where the problem arose and the VM is running, I get an error during live migration and the VM fails back to node1 where it did run... So it's like there is something wrong with Hyper-V on node 2 and not node 1. Also node 3 has the same issue. Restarting the nodes is NOT an option since I will have this problem again at a later time AND because not all the VMs can run on node 1 which means my client company will experience downtime on the VMs not running on node 1. Any fix for this? An update I have missed perhaps? It has been two years... Here are the errors: An error ocurred while attempting to change the state of virtual machine XXX. 'XXX' failed to start. This is a little bit different as in Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3 because Solaris Cluster 4.0 is only running on Solaris 11. The name of the zone cluster must be unique throughout the global Solaris Cluster and must be configured on a global Solaris Cluster. Please read all the requirements for zone cluster in Solaris Cluster Software Installation Guide for SC4.0. • Cannot create Java VM on OpenVZ

  I'm constantly encountering an error related to Java and certificates on my Ubuntu server running in OpenVZ when installing things from apt-get. I'm pretty sure it has to do with how Java allocates memory. I know the fail counter for privvmpages is very high, so the problem must be that Java is hitting this limit. I have read that the server VM will allocate a lot of memory up front to preempt performance issues, but that the client VM doesn't do this and might be better for what I'm doing. I messed with jvm.cfg to make the system go to the client VM, but get an error that it can't find the client VM. I have tried replacing the Java binary with a script calling Java with -Xms and -Xmx settings, and that solves the issue for when I call basic things from the command line, but not for when doing things like having apt-get configure certificates. I'm at a loss for what to try next. I need to get this working, but simply increasing privvmpages is not an available option. I have the actual error pasted below.   Observations in Migrating from JavaFX Script to JavaFX 2.0 Introduction Having been available for a few years now, there is a decent body of work written for JavaFX using the JavaFX Script language. With the general availability announcement of JavaFX 2.0 Beta, the natural question arises about converting the legacy code over to the new JavaFX 2.0 platform. This article reflects on some of the observations encountered while porting source code over from JavaFX Script to the new JavaFX API paradigm. The Application The program chosen for migration is an implementation of the Sudoku game and serves as a reference application for the book JavaFX – Developing Rich Internet Applications. The design of the program can be divided into two major components: (1) A user interface (ideally suited for JavaFX design) and (2) the puzzle generator. For the context of this article, our primary interest lies in the user interface. The puzzle generator code was lifted from a sourceforge.net project and is written entirely in Java. Regardless which version of the UI we choose (JavaFX Script vs. JavaFX 2.0), no code changes were required for the puzzle generator code. The original user interface for the JavaFX Sudoku application was written exclusively in JavaFX Script, and as such is a suitable candidate to convert over to the new JavaFX 2.0 model. However, a few notable points are worth mentioning about this program. First off, it was written in the JavaFX 1.1 timeframe, where certain capabilities of the JavaFX framework were as of yet unavailable. Citing two examples, this program creates many of its own UI controls from scratch because the built-in controls were yet to be introduced. In addition, layout of graphical nodes is done in a very manual manner, again because much of the automatic layout capabilities were in flux at the time. It is worth considering that this program was written at a time when most of us were just coming up to speed on this technology. One would think that having the opportunity to recreate this application anew, it would look a lot different from the current version. Comparing the Size of the Source Code An attempt was made to convert each of the original UI JavaFX Script source files (suffixed with .fx) over to a Java counterpart. Due to language feature differences, there are a small number of source files which only exist in one version or the other. The table below summarizes the size of each of the source files. The number of characters in each file was determined by running the Unix ‘ls –l’ command over each file. The examination of the code could certainly be much more rigorous. No standard formatting was performed on these files.  All comments however were deleted. There was a certain expectation that the new Java version would require more lines of code than the original JavaFX script version. As evidenced by a count of the total number of lines, the Java version has about 22% more lines than its FX Script counterpart. Furthermore, there was an additional expectation that the Java version would be more verbose in terms of the total number of characters.  In fact the preceding data shows that on average the Java source files contain fewer characters per line than the FX files.  But that's not the whole story.  Upon further examination, the FX Script source files had a disproportionate number of blank characters.  Why?  Because of the nature of how one develops JavaFX Script code.  The object literal dominates FX Script code.  Its not uncommon to see object literals indented halfway across the page, consuming lots of meaningless space characters. RAM consumption Not the most scientific analysis, memory usage for the application was examined on a Windows Vista system by running the Windows Task Manager and viewing how much memory was being consumed by the Sudoku version in question. Roughly speaking, the FX script version, after startup, had a RAM footprint of about 90MB and remained pretty much the same size. The Java version started out at about 55MB and maintained that size throughout its execution. What About Binding? Arguably, the most striking observation about the conversion from JavaFX Script to JavaFX 2.0 concerned the need for data synchronization, or lack thereof. In JavaFX Script, the primary means to synchronize data is via the bind expression (using the “bind” keyword), and perhaps to a lesser extent it’s “on replace” cousin. The bind keyword does not exist in Java, so for JavaFX 2.0 a Data Binding API has been introduced as a replacement. To give a feel for the difference between the two versions of the Sudoku program, the table that follows indicates how many binds were required for each source file. For JavaFX Script files, this was ascertained by simply counting the number of occurrences of the bind keyword. As can be seen, binding had been used frequently in the JavaFX Script version (and does not take into consideration an additional half dozen or so “on replace” triggers). The JavaFX 2.0 program achieves the same functionality as the original JavaFX Script version, yet the equivalent of binding was only needed twice throughout the Java version of the source code. That being said, this first experience indicates that the migrated Java code will likely be larger, though not extensively so, than the original Java FX Script source. Furthermore, although very important, it appears that the requirements for data synchronization via binding, may be significantly less with the new platform.

• Parent Objects

  Support for Parent Objects was added in Solaris 11 Update 1. The following material is adapted from the PSARC arc case, and the Solaris Linker and Libraries Manual. A "plugin" is a shared object, usually loaded via dlopen(), that is used by a program in order to allow the end user to add functionality to the program. Examples of plugins include those used by web browsers (flash, acrobat, etc), as well as mdb and elfedit modules. The object that loads the plugin at runtime is called the "parent object". Unlike most object dependencies, the parent is not identified by name, but by its status as the object doing the load. Historically, building a good plugin is has been more complicated than it should be: A parent and its plugin usually share a 2-way dependency: The plugin provides one or more routines for the parent to call, and the parent supplies support routines for use by the plugin for things like memory allocation and error reporting. It is a best practice to build all objects, including plugins, with the -z defs option, in order to ensure that the object specifies all of its dependencies, and is self contained. However: The parent is usually an executable, which cannot be linked to via the usual library mechanisms provided by the link editor. Even if the parent is a shared object, which could be a normal library dependency to the plugin, it may be desirable to build plugins that can be used by more than one parent, in which case embedding a dependency NEEDED entry for one of the parents is undesirable. The usual way to build a high quality plugin with -z defs uses a special mapfile provided by the parent. This mapfile defines the parent routines, specifying the PARENT attribute (see example below). This works, but is inconvenient, and error prone. The symbol table in the parent already describes what it makes available to plugins — ideally the plugin would obtain that information directly rather than from a separate mapfile. The new -z parent option to ld allows a plugin to link to the parent and access the parent symbol table. This differs from a typical dependency: No NEEDED record is created. The relationship is recorded as a logical connection to the parent, rather than as an explicit object name However, it operates in the same manner as any other dependency in terms of making symbols available to the plugin. When the -z parent option is used, the link-editor records the basename of the parent object in the dynamic section, using the new tag DT_SUNW_PARENT. This is an informational tag, which is not used by the runtime linker to locate the parent, but which is available for diagnostic purposes. The ld(1) manpage documentation for the -z parent option is: -z parent=object Specifies a "parent object", which can be an executable or shared object, against which to link the output object. This option is typically used when creating "plugin" shared objects intended to be loaded by an executable at runtime via the dlopen() function. The symbol table from the parent object is used to satisfy references from the plugin object. The use of the -z parent option makes symbols from the object calling dlopen() available to the plugin. Example For this example, we use a main program, and a plugin. The parent provides a function named parent_callback() for the plugin to call. However, the use of -z defs prevents the plugin object from linking due to the unsatisfied symbol from the parent object: % cc -zdefs -G -o plugin.so plugin.c Undefined first referenced symbol in file parent_callback plugin.o ld: fatal: symbol referencing errors. No output written to plugin.so A mapfile can be used to specify to ld that the parent_callback symbol is supplied by the parent object. % cat plugin.mapfile $mapfile_version 2 SYMBOL_SCOPE { global: parent_callback { FLAGS = PARENT }; }; % cc -zdefs -Mplugin.mapfile -G -o plugin.so plugin.c However, the -z parent option to ld is the most direct solution to this problem, allowing the plugin to actually link against the parent object, and obtain the available symbols from it. An added benefit of using -z parent instead of a mapfile, is that the name of the parent object is recorded in the dynamic section of the plugin, and can be displayed by the file utility: % cc -zdefs -zparent=main -G -o plugin.so plugin.c % elfdump -d plugin.so | grep PARENT [0] SUNW_PARENT 0xcc main % file plugin.so plugin.so: ELF 32-bit LSB dynamic lib 80386 Version 1, parent main, dynamically linked, not stripped % ./main ./plugin.so parent has called plugin_func() from plugin.so plugin_func() has called parent_callback() We can also observe this in elfedit plugins on Solaris systems running Solaris 11 Update 1 or newer: % file /usr/lib/elfedit/dyn.so /usr/lib/elfedit/dyn.so: ELF 32-bit LSB dynamic lib 80386 Version 1, parent elfedit, dynamically linked, not stripped, no debugging information available Related Other Work The GNU ld has an option named --just-symbols that can be used in a similar manner: --just-symbols=filename Read symbol names and their addresses from filename, but do not relocate it or include it in the output. This allows your output file to refer symbolically to absolute locations of memory defined in other programs. You may use this option more than once. -z parent is a higher level operation aimed specifically at simplifying the construction of high quality plugins. Although it employs the same operation, it differs from --just symbols in 2 significant ways: There can only be one parent. The parent is recorded in the created object, and can be displayed by 'file', or other similar tools.

• Practical Approaches to increasing Virtualization Density-Part 1

Let me kick start the year off by talking about Virtualization density.  What is it?The number of virtual servers that a physical server can support and it's increase from the prior physical infrastructure as a percentage. Why is it important?This is important because the density should be indicative of how well the server is getting consumed?So what is wrong ?Virtualization density fails to convey the "Real usage" of a server.  Most of the hypervisor based O/S Virtualization  evangelists take pride in the fact that they are now running a Virtual Server farm of X machines compared to a Physical server farm of Y (with Y less than X obviously). The real question is - has your utilization of the server really increased or not.  In an internal study that was conducted by one of the top financial institution - the utilization of servers only went up by 15% from 30 to 45. So, this really means that just by increasing virtualization density one will not be achieving the goal of using up the servers in their server farm better.  I will write about what the possible approaches are to increase virtualization density in the next entry.
