• Is it possible to mount a TrueCrypt volume to a NTFS mount point?

  The question is simple really. Under Linux etc.. you can mount TrueCrypt volumes, files or partitions, to any mount point of your choosing whereas in Windows the interface only shows drive letters. I'm wondering if I can mount the volume, a partition in this case, un-encrypted to a NTFS mount point, or folder, instead of using drive letters. The reason I ask is I am running out of letters :(. I'm using Server 2008 with the latest TrueCrypt install. Note: I know how to mount a volume directly to an NTFS folder mount point but doing so, and navigating to the mount point, prompts a notice saying the volume is not formatted - to be expected as the volume is not un-encrypted at this stage.

• Vagrant-aws not provisioning

  I'm trying to spin up and provision an EC2 instance with Vagrant, it successfully creates the instance up and I can then use vagrant ssh to SSH into the it but Puppet doesn't seem to carry out any provisioning. Upon running vagrant up --provider=aws --provision I get the following output Bringing machine 'default' up with 'aws' provider... • Sent items listed by sender's name (my name!) not recipient in Outlook for Mac 2011

  Outlook 2011 on a Mac (OSX7 Lion), on a (mostly PC) office network using Microsoft Exchange server. In Outlook 2011, in the network "Sent Items" folder, all emails are listed showing the sender's name (my name), not the recipients' names. That means every single email is headed with my own name, like this: My Name 08/09/2012 Some subject line [flag] My Name 08/09/2012 Re: Another subject line [flag] My Name 07/09/2012 Re: different subject line [flag] My Name 07/09/2012 different subject line [flag] ...and so on. There's no clue at all as to who these emails were to, until I open each and every one. I guess it's reassuring to be told that every email that I sent was sent by me... and if I was ever to forget my own name while browsing my sent emails folder, it'd be super useful... But it's not very helpful for navigating sent emails. Is this normal for Office for Mac 2011? How can I fix this, so that the list shows the recipients' names instead of endlessly reminding me of my own name? Things I've found while researching this: This can also happen in Outlook for Windows. On Windows, it's easily fixed by resetting the field. That method doesn't work on Mac because the fields can't be selected separately. It seems this can also happen in Apple Mail too, and a lot of people seem stumped by this. I can't find anything on this specific to Outlook 2011 or Outlook for Mac in general. A simple guide on how to fix this would be the best answer, but I'd also welcome any knowledgable thoughts from Microsoft Exchange Server people on whether this sounds like an Outlook settings issue which I can fix on my machine, or some issue relating to how the Mac gets data from the server and network. The fact that Apple Mail users have encountered the same issue with no apparent fix makes me think the problem might be in the network rather than the mail client - but that's way beyond my limited knowledge of these things. I don't know whether the local ("On my computer") Sent Items folder has the same problem, as it's configured so that no emails except drafts are ever stored in these local folders. Drafts saved locally are listed by recipient as expected.

• How to safely backup MySQL using VSS-based backup solutions

  One of my clients is running MySQL on a Windows Server 2008 system. Their regular backups are performed using StorageCraft's ShadowCopy, which uses the VSS service to perform backups of open files. Some investigation indicates that MySQL is not entirely VSS-aware, and that the tables need to be locked prior to the shadow operation, then unlocked afterwards. There is a post at http://forum.storagecraft.com/Community/forums/p/548/2702.aspx which indicates the steps that need to be performed, however the user had some difficulty in performing them and no follow up solution was ever posted. Specifically, they succeeded in writing a batch file to lock the database, however once the batch file returns from MySQL it drops the connection and thus relinquishes the lock. I'm looking for a method that I can send the MySQL command FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK, then perform the backup, then send UNLOCK TABLES when the backup is complete. Alternatively, I can exclude the MySQL data storage folder from backup, and schedule a mysqldump backup into a folder that will then be backed up by VSS. Can I have some recommendations please?

• How do I access shared folders on Ubuntu server from Mac OS?

  I have an old dell desktop running ubuntu 11.04, I also have samba installed on it. I'm trying to access the shared folders on the Ubuntu machine from my Mac, so I go into 'Finder', click on 'Go' and 'Connect to Server'. I type in the ip address of the ubuntu machine smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx and click connect, I can then see the list of shared folders from the ubuntu machine so I know its making a connection. But when I access the 'Music' folder I get an error message stating: There was an error connecting to the server "xxx.xxx.x.xx". Check the server name or IP address, and try again. Any thoughts anyone ? EDIT I have a external hard drive attached to the server, and the folders I'm trying to access are located on that external hard drive. The location of the folder is /media/HD-CELU2/test, so I think the path from Finder should be smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx/media/HD-CELU2/test, but having tested this, I'm still not getting in. P.S. I'm using Samba as I have a Windows machine on my home network as well.

  I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.

When pointing the path to a regular folder it works fine. Also, when I point it directly to /media/MYDISK, it shows the same error. EDIT: to make it more interesting, I have no graphical interface, so I need to touch the config files directly..

  My home server is running Windows Server 2008 R2. I've had it running for almost a year now without any issues with shared folders. This past week I had an issue with my modem which required it to be power cycled and with that I power cycled my router. After that I haven't been able to connect to my shared network folders. I have no idea why that would even cause an issue as I've power cycled my networking equipment in the past without issues and none of my settings appear to have been lost. I am mapping these drives on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine using "Map Network Drive", from there I enter \\SERVER\Storage as I'm trying to connect to my shared folder named Storage. I receive the following error every time I try mapping the drive: Windows cannot access \\Server\Storage Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Details: Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found. When I click Diagnose I get the following: Problems found file and print sharing resource (SERVER) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. The remote computer isn't responding to connection on port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn't find any problems with the firewall on your computer. I've tried this from multiple computers with the same issue too. To resolve the problems so far I've tried: Disabling the firewall on SERVER Reinstalling File Services Modifying NetBT\Parameters registry values Adding a custom inbound rule for port 445 Adding port forwarding on my router for port 445 Recreating the shared folders Checking and rechecking the shared folder permissions. Resetting my user account password on the server used to access the shared folder. I'm pulling my hair out with this problem mainly because it came out of nowhere. It was working fine the night before and the next day it just stopped working. Any ideas of what I could try next are much appreciated. It should also be noted that this server is used as a web server too and that functionality still works correctly.

Python has "PEP302: New Import Hooks" (2003): This PEP proposes to add a new set of import hooks that offer better customization of the Python import mechanism. Contrary to the current import hook, a new-style hook can be injected into the existing scheme, allowing for a finer grained control of how modules are found and how they are loaded. We are considering introducing a feature similar to PEP302 into Ruby 2.0 (CRuby 2.0). I want to make a proposal which can persuade Matz.   A lot of companies now use TFS or some other system and keep all their packages in a single project. This means that a copy of all the packages will end up on your local disk. There is major failing with SSIS that it is sometimes quite difficult to find what a package is actually doing, what it accesses and what it affects. This is a simple dos script which will search through all packages in a folder for a string and write the names of found packages to an output file. Just copy the text to a .bat file (I use aaSearch.bat) in the folder with all the package scripts Change the output filename (twice), change the find string value and run it in a dos window.   I develop on different machines. I use MAMP, I have it installed on my dropbox folder and created symbolic links to the applications folder. That way if I work one day on my desktop and make changes to let's say a database schema and next day I work from my laptop I won't have to do any db migration stuff the same applies for all the apache virtual hosts I have setup using MAMP. Everything is portable. I recently started using Cherokee server and I like it a lot. I would like to replace MAMP with Cherokee but first I need to be able to make it portable. I don't want to have to configure multiple virtual hosts, settings, etc., on multiple machines. Is there any way I can set up Cherokee to be as portable as MAMP? What if I want to run Cherokee from a thumbdrive?

  I recently attended an R training course and was happily working with a laptop in RStudio. On my return to the office I installed RStudio and I tried to run some scripts I had gathered from the course. However, these scripts required me to install packages and when I tried to install the packages the result was an error. Error in install.packages : path[1]="\file/users/bernard/R/win-library/2.15": Access is denied In my firm we write to a server drive refferred to as the U: drive rather than the hard disk on the desktop for security reasons. Any ideas what is going on? I have checked the properties of the folder in windows and it says I have permission but still it fails. I have tried creating a folder on the C drive and directing R_LIBS_USER to it but no luck.

  We have about 15-20 users who have this software installed. We have UAC enabled through GPO as you should, which means the software prompts for admin approval if a standard user trys to install it. Thats fine, they can call the help desk to have the software installed. My problem is, our help desk is being bombarded every day because users can't update the software and there are updates almost every day which is prompting UAC. Using procmon.exe to find out where it was trying to write to, I then created a GPO to allow file permission access to the program files folder for this particular software, including the program data folder, but it still prompts for admin approval. It seems as though that the software is using msiexec.exe to run a .msp patch file. The only "ACCESS DENIED"s I can still see in procmon is things like this: What can I possibly do to stop this software from prompting UAC with admin password credentials aside from disabling UAC?

PS: I used reclaime to create an image of my RAID0 broken array and with reclaime file recovery i can see all my files intact but i cannot recover without purchase.

• Updating the $PATH for running an command through SSH with LDAP user account

  Hi all, I am setting up a Mac OSX 1.6 server to host Git repositories. As such we need to push commits to the server through SSH. The server has only an admin account and uses a user list from a LDAP server. Now, since it is accessing the server through a non interactive shell, git operations are not able to complete since git executables are not in the default path. As the users are network users, they do not have a local home folder. So I cannot use a ~/.bashrc and the like solution. I browsed over several articles here and there but could not get it working in a nice and clean setup. Here are the infos on the methods I gathered so far: I could update the default PATH environment to include the git executables folder. However, I could not manage to do it successfully. Updating /etc/paths didn't change anything and since it's not an interactive shell, /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc are ignored. From the ssh manpage, I read that a BASH_ENV variable can be set to get an optional script to be executed. However I cannot figure how to set it system wide on the server. If it needs to be set up on the client machine, this is not an acceptable solution. If someone has some info on how it is supposed to be done, please, by all means! I can fix this problem by creating a .bashrc with PATH correction in the system root (since all network users would start here as they do not have home). But it just feels wrong. Additionally, if we do create a home folder for an user, then the git command would fail again. I can install a third party application to set up hooks on the login and then run a script creating a home directory with the necessary path corrections. This smells like a backyard tinkering and duct tape solution. I can install a small script on the server and ForceCommand the sshd to this script on login. This script will then look for a command to execute ($SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND) and trigger a login shell to run this command, or just trigger a regular login shell for an interactive session.   I have a CentOS server (rel6) that had python installed (2.6), but I needed a few features in 3.3+. I installed 3.3 into a seperate folder and made a symbolic link to execute it: I installed setup tools: yum install python-setuptools I installed a needed module"pandas" easy_install pandas I executed my pyton script, which encountered an error that required i use a newer version I downloaded and installed Python 3.3.5 to it's own folder so as to not override my default python wget http://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.3.5/Python-3.3.5.tar.xz tar xJf ./Python-3.3.5.tar.xz cd ./Python-3.3.5 ./configure --prefix=/opt/python make make install Made s symbolic link to allow me to execute this new python: ln -s /opt/python3.3/bin/python3.3 ~/bin/py The problem is that when I execute the python script with my new py alias, it does not have all the addons needed (explicitly MySQLdb) which the default install does. How do i go about installing the MySQLdb module, or any for that matter, to be reachable or useable for the new Python 3.3.5 installation? Or is there a way to make the current modules in 2.6 available to 3.3.5 as well?
