  • Apache or Nginx for php behind Varnish

    We are managing a heavy traffic php site (driven with vbulletin). To get less load I use the cache-proxy varnish. Works very well - with varnish the load was reduced by 50%. But now I am thinking about which webserver to use behind varnish. 90% requests getting to the webserver are php-requests. So is there a difference between apache/mpm-prefork with mod_php and nginx/php-fpm? Is apache perhaps better, because it doesn't have the tcp overhead?   • Wordpress auto excerpts from post content?

    I'm trying to create an auto generated post excerpt from the current page's post content using a function in my theme's header file. The post excerpt will be used as the page's meta description. Can someone give me an idea of how you might go about this once you've got the post content into a string variable? The somewhat tricky part is that, in order to predict a viable stopping point for the post excerpt, I'd like to specify that the cutoff point be the end of the first paragraph of text. And for that reason, it does not make sense to load the entire post content into the string I'm using. Can I grab the first paragraph without having to load the entire post content string? And I'm not certain how to test for that in php. Would regex be the only way?

  • Constructor Injection and when to use a Service Locator

    I'm struggling to understand parts of StructureMap's usage. In particular, in the documentation a statement is made regarding a common anti-pattern, the use of StructureMap as a Service Locator only instead of constructor injection (code samples straight from Structuremap documentation): public ShippingScreenPresenter() { _service = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IShippingService>(); _repository = ObjectFactory.GetInstance<IRepository>(); } instead of: public ShippingScreenPresenter(IShippingService service, IRepository repository) { _service = service; _repository = repository; } This is fine for a very short object graph, but when dealing with objects many levels deep, does this imply that you should pass down all the dependencies required by the deeper objects right from the top? Surely this breaks encapsulation and exposes too much information about the implementation of deeper objects. Let's say I'm using the Active Record pattern, so my record needs access to a data repository to be able to save and load itself. If this record is loaded inside an object, does that object call ObjectFactory.CreateInstance() and pass it into the active record's constructor? What if that object is inside another object. Does it take the IRepository in as its own parameter from further up?   • Dynamic object property populator (without reflection)

    I want to populate an object's properties without using reflection in a manner similar to the DynamicBuilder on CodeProject. The CodeProject example is tailored for populating entities using a DataReader or DataRecord. I use this in several DALs to good effect. Now I want to modify it to use a dictionary or other data agnostic object so that I can use it in non DAL code --places I currently use reflection. I know almost nothing about OpCodes and IL. I just know that it works well and is faster than reflection. I have tried to modify the CodeProject example and because of my ignorance with IL, I have gotten stuck on two lines. One of them deals with dbnulls and I'm pretty sure I can just lose it, but I don't know if the lines preceding and following it are related and which of them will also need to go. The other, I think, is the one that pulled the value out of the datarecord before and now needs to pull it out of the dictionary. I think I can replace the "getValueMethod" with my "property.Value" but I'm not sure. I'm open to alternative/better ways of skinning this cat too.   • Embedded strongly-typed views with ASP.NET MVC

    I'm working on a plugin-type of system for ASP.NET MVC that loads views from an embedded assembly. I have created a VirtualPathProvider that does the work of retrieving out of the assembly. Everything is working fine except for strongly-typed views. Whenever I try to load one of those, I get an exception of: Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage'. The problem is that there is no Web.config file under the Views folder. Well, actually there is, but the system doesn't seem to want to read the embedded version. If I manually create the file under the corresponding directory in the web app, everything is fine. This isn't an acceptable workaround however, as each plugin would need its own file in its own specific directory. Does anyone know how I might get ASP to read the embedded Web.config file?   • Drupal: Multiple Stylesheets

    I'm currently creating a custom Drupal theme for my company and I'm having trouble getting multiple stylesheets to load. I followed the instructions on this page by adding stylesheets to the .info file in the format: stylesheets[all][] = style.css stylesheets[all][] = name2.css etc... However, when I load the page nothing changes and when I view source, it consistently lists style.css but seems to ignore the others. Am I misunderstood in the process of adding additional stylesheets? What could I be doing incorrectly? Thanks for any help!

  • debugging with internet explorer

    I have some code that I thought I had written so that it would play nice on IE. But apparently it does not. I use IE8 for my testing and get quite frustrated with the built-in debugging 'tool'. I found that firebug has a javascript tool that debugs for IE but I have to click it for every page, wait for it to load and then test my script. Is there a way to make IE ALWAYS load the firebug .js file? I tried searching for way to set up a custom header file for my IE installation but was unsuccessful. Is there another tool out there that would be better/easier to use? Another way to test scripts for IE compatibility?

    Hi I have an application that draws a lot of graphics and change them. Since I have many graphics, I thought of having the images outside the APK, downloaded from the internet as needed, and saved on the files application folder. But I started to get outOfMemory exceptions.   • Recording object method calls to generate automated test.

    I have an object with large interface and I would like to record all its method calls done during a user session. Ideally this sequence of calls would be available as source code: myobj.MethodA(42); myobj.MethodB("spam", false); ... I would then convert this code to a test case to have a kind of automated smoke/load test. WCF Load Test can do this for WCF services and CodedUI test recorder can do this for UIs. What are my options for a POCO class? I am in position to edit application code and replace the object in question with some recording/forwarding proxy.

  • embed multiple youtube videos to chromeless player cue

    So in the project ive been working on i use the youtube API to add a video to a chromeless player (got custom buttons, everything works no problems). It loads the youtube id which it gets from the database (Codeigniter, PHP). But what i would like to see is: instead of loading 1 video, id like to add all the videos i get from the database in the cue of that one player. So only one screen, first video retrieved from dbase gets played first, when its done second get loaded preferably also looped. Is there any way i can achieve this? My first guess would be to save the array with youtube id's somewhere and on state change (when the 'video stop'-event gets fired) load the next id from the array. Havent tried this yet because id prefer if the cue gets just gets filled on the init, so it doesnt have to load after a video has been ended. Is This possible?

    I have problems using Crypto++ to save a RSA public key (that I obtained loading a private key file in PKCS#8 format). When decoding the key, I always get a BERDecodeErr exception.   • How to access and work with XML from API in C#

    My goal is to pull XML data from the API and load it to a sql server database. The frist step I'm attempting here is to access the data and display it. Once I get this to work I'll loop through each row and insert the values into a sql server database. When I try to run the code below nothing happens and when I paste the url directly into the browser I get this error "2010-03-08 04:24:17 Wallet exhausted: retry after 2010-03-08 05:23:58. 2010-03-08 05:23:58" To me it seems that every iteration of the foreach loop makes a call to the site and I get blocked for an hour. Am I retrieving data from the API in an incorrect manner? Is there some way to load the data into memory or an array then loop through that?   • java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError, mach-o but wrong architecture on Mac10.6.2

    I was trying to run a project in my local machine. I tried to load this jnilib file which I got from a running instance of this project on my Mac 10.6.2, System.load(lib.getAbsolutePath()); then I got this exception thrown: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError, mach-o but wrong architecture I have check the jnilib with file command: libScreenMatchProxy.jnilib: Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 I guess this is because the jnilib file is compiled in 32bit but the Java comes with Mac10.6 is 64bit. So I go to Java Preference and set Java to use 32bit first. But it didn't work. As mentioned above, this jnilib file is copied from a running instance of the project on my Mac, so it should work. I don't understand why it working in the installed application but not in my Eclipse.

    Hello, Do I need to do something different in an abstract class to get dependency injection working with Ninject? I have a base controller with the following code: public abstract class BaseController : Controller { public IAccountRepository AccountRepository { get; set; } } My module looks like this: public class WebDependencyModule : NinjectModule { public override void Load() { Bind<IAccountRepository>().To<AccountRepository>(); } } And this is my Global.asax: protected override void OnApplicationStarted() { Kernel.Load(new WebDependencyModule()); } protected override IKernel CreateKernel() { return new StandardKernel(); } It works when I decorate the IAccountRepository property with the [Inject] attribute.   • 'script/console test' with spork and rspec not loading the whole environment?

    I'm trying to load up console to interact with some of my rspec mocking helpers. I expected that running script/console test would load an env similar to when I run spec. However, this doesn't appear to be the case. It looks like spec_helper is never loaded. Or, if it is, it's not actually running through the logic because spork has polluted it a bit. In short, is there a quick and easy way to get an interactive rspec party going?

  • What is the best way for communication between cluster nodes

    I have an application written in a combination of ASP/VB6/VBScript and ASP.NET/C# that consists of a website part, SOAP-like webservice part and a queue processing part processing incoming files in a hotfolder. We are used to running under load balancers (Microsoft or other make). Often we need to communicate between the different load balanced servers. Currently we do this through the SQL Server database that is common for all nodes, however, this comes with a performance penalty as each message requires a transaction and continual polling from the other nodes.   • Safari extension cookies not recognized/passed

    I've recently been porting a Chrome extension to Safari, and encountered this kind of error (bug, feature, etc.) So, in global page i have a XMLHTTP request to a secure page which is available only after you login. Example: I simply login using browser - as usually you do on facebook or other secure pages After that, in global page, I load a login-only-available xmlhttp - and it says i'm not logged in it seems that global page somewhat has it's own cookies, so a secure page thinks i'm new ps: in Chrome i can load that page and it thinks i'm acting on behalf of logged in user, so i guess there are some restrictions in Safari pps: i heard there's a Block third-party cookies option in Safari, but even if i checked it to "Never block" it still doesn't work

  • BULK INSERT with inconsitant number of columns

    I am trying to load a large amount data in SQL server from a flat file using BULK INSERT. However, my file has varying number of column, for instance the first row contains 14 and the second contains 4. That is OK, I just want to make a table with the max number of columns and load the file into it with nulls for the missing columns. I can play with it from that point. But it seems that SQL Server when reaching the end of the line and having more columns to fill for that same row in the destination table, just moves on to the next line and attempts to put the data on that line to the wrong column of the table. Is there a way to get the behavior that I am looking for? Is there a table hint that I can use the specify this? Has anyone run into this before?
