  • Silverlight Reporting Application Part 3.5 - Prism Background and WCF RIA [Series Intermission]

    Taking a step back before I dive into the details and full-on coding fun, I wanted to once again respond to a comment on my last post to clear up some things in regards to how I'm setting up my project and some of the choices I've made. Aka, thanks Ben. :) Prism Project Setup For starters, I'm not the ideal use case for a Prism application. In most cases where you've got a one-man team, Prism can be overkill as it is more intended for large teams who are geographically dispersed or in applications that have a larger scale than my Recruiting application in which you'll greatly benefit from modularity, delayed loading of xaps, etc. What Prism offers, though, is a manner for handling UI, commands, and events with the idea that, through a modular approach in which no parts really need to know about one another, I can update this application bit by bit as hiring needs change or requirements differ between offices without having to worry that changing something in the Jobs module will break something in, say, the Scheduling module. All that being said, here's a look at how our project breakdown for Recruit (MVVM/Prism implementation) looks: This could be a little misleading though, as each of those modules is actually another project in the overall Recruit solution. As far as what the projects actually are, that looks a bit like this: Recruiting Solution Recruit (Shell up there) - Main Silverlight Application .Web - Default .Web application to host the Silverlight app Infrastructure - Silverlight Class Library Project Modules - Silverlight Class Library Projects Infrastructure &Modules The Infrastructure project is probably something you'll see to some degree in any composite application. In this application, it is going to contain custom commands (you'll see the joy of these in a post or two down the road), events, helper classes, and any custom classes I need to share between different modules. Think of this as a handy little crossroad between any parts of your application. Modules on the other hand are the bread and butter of this application. Besides the shell, which holds the UI skeleton, and the infrastructure, which holds all those shared goodies, the modules are self-contained bundles of functionality to handle different concerns. In my scenario, I need a way to look up and edit Jobs, Applicants, and Schedule interviews, a Notification module to handle telling the user when different things are happening (i.e., loading from database), and a Menu to control interaction and moving between different views. All modules are going to follow the following pattern: The module class will inherit from IModule and handle initialization and loading the correct view into the correct region, whereas the Views and ViewModels folders will contain paired Silverlight user controls and ViewModel class backings. WCF RIA Services Since we've got all the projects in a single solution, we did not have to go the route of creating a WCR RIA Services Class Library. Every module has it's WCF RIA link back to the main .Web project, so the single Linq-2-SQL (yes, I said Linq-2-SQL, but I'll soon be switching to OpenAccess due to the new visual designer) context I'm using there works nicely with the scope of my project. If I were going for completely separating this project out and doing different, dynamically loaded elements, I'd probably go for the separate class library. Hope that clears that up. In the future though, I will be using that in a project that I've got in the "when I've got enough time to work on this" pipeline, so we'll get into that eventually- and hopefully when WCF RIA is in full release! Why Not use Silverlight Navigation/Business Template? The short answer- I'm a creature of habit, and having used Silverlight for a few years now, I'm used to doing lots of things manually. :) Plus, starting with a blank slate of a project I'm able to set up things exactly as I want them to be. In this case, rather than the navigation frame we would see in one of the templates, the MainRegion/ContentControl is working as our main navigation window. In many cases I will use theSilverlight navigation template to start things off, however in this case I did not need those features so I opted out of using that. Next time when I actually hit post #4, we're going to get into the modules and starting to get functionality into this application.   • How Do I Setup the Notepad++ Run Command for Ruby?

    I'm trying to setup the Notepad++ IDE so that when I press F6 the Ruby script I'm editing will run. After searching the internet I've found that putting [cmd /K ruby "$(FULL_CURRENT_PATH)"] without the brackets into the run dialogue box that pops up when I press F5 will run basic scripts in the Command Prompt (I'm using Windows 7). However, if my code loads any external data such as .txt files, or as I've found with Gosu, loads any image files, Ruby complains that things do not exist which do in fact exist. I know my code and Ruby installation (Ruby 1.9.3) are fine because prior to now I've been using FreeRIDE, an older, somewhat buggy IDE that I've grown tired of, and my code runs fine when I press F5 using that IDE. EFMVC is a simple app, developed as a reference implementation for demonstrating ASP.NET MVC, EF Code First, ASP.NET Web API, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), Test-Driven Development (DDD). The current version is built with ASP.NET MVC 4, EF Code First 5, ASP.NET Web API, Autofac, AutoMapper, Nunit and Moq. All unit tests were written with Nunit and Moq. You can download the latest version of the reference app from http://efmvc.codeplex.com/ Unit Test for HTTP Get Let’s write a unit test class for verifying the behaviour of a ASP.NET Web API controller named CategoryController.     I host my own multiple Websites on my server. How do i setup my own child nameserver? There are 4 different websites, with .com and .net and .ro at the end. I moved them to my own server. My Domain Administration (Registrar) let's me define my own child nameserver with my own IP and i've added my nameserver as my domain nameservers list. ns.something.ro as the first and only in the nameservers list ns.something.ro with my own IP address as the child nameserver I've setup everything and it works (kind of). When i use my ns IP adress directly i can of course access everything. Using "normal" external dnses will not work. As expected others on the web can't resolve correctly. What's wrong? Am i missing something?

    Okay, so I'm cheating and not actually a question, but instead making a flat-out post. I know that goes against the grain of Stack Overflow, but this is too valuable not to share. I'm assuming that you have Visual Studio Professional 2008 and access to an instance of MySQL server. This MAY work with VS2008 Web edition, but not at all sure. If you haven't, install MySQL Connector for .NET (6.2.2.0 at the time of this write-up) Optional: install MySQL GUI Tools If you haven't, install MVC 2 RTM, or better yet, use Microsoft's Web Platform Installer. Create an empty MySQL database. If you don't want to access your application with the MySQL root user account (insecure), create a user account and assign the appropriate privileges (outside the scope of this write-up). Create a new MVC 2 application in Visual Studio In the MVC 2 app, reference MySql.Web.dll. It will either be in your GAC, or in the folder that the MySQL Connector installer put it. Look for the "Configuration Tool" heading half way down the page. The public key token on the MySql.web.dll that I've posted here ought not change any time soon. But in case you suspect a bad token string from copying and pasting or whatever, just use the Visual Studio command line to run: "sn -T [Path\to\your.dll]" in order to get the correct public key token. There you have it, ASP.NET MVC 2 running over MySQL. Cheers!

  • OnExit is not entering via PostSharp in asp.net project.

    Hi there, I have setup PostSharp and it appears to be working but i don't get it entering OnExit (i have logged setup to ensure it is working) ... Its a bit tricky to configure with asp.net - or is it just me ... I am using the 1.5 new version I basically have the following in my web.config and i had to add the SearchPath otherwise it can't find my assemblies <postsharp directory="C:\Program Files\PostSharp 1.5" trace="true"> <parameters> <!--<add name="parameter-name" value="parameter-value"/>--> </parameters> <searchPath> <!-- Always add the binary folder to the search path. --> <add name="bin" value="~\bin"/> </searchPath> </postsharp> I have set tracing on but what is strange to me is that it appears to build to the temp directory, maybe this is my issue, i am unsure .. hence i do F5 ... Is it possible to name the Output directory and output file?? As you can see it is editing a DLL in the temp dir so IIS is no longer in control so it doesn't execute it ??? Shouldn't the IDE hide controls that aren't useful? Specifically, I'm looking at the AJAX extensions like Timer and UpdatePanel, but it seems like a lot controls more would require postback.

  • Multiple Mod_ReWrites on one site - Possible? (Wordpress blog in root directory, CodeIgniter project

    Currently I am creating a project with CodeIgniter that is contained within a subdirectory of my domain. For this example we'll call it domain.com/test. I also have Wordpress installed on this domain, and all of its files are in the root. For instance, if you navigate to my domain.com then it pulls up the Wordpress blog. I currently have the Wordpress mod_rewrite activated so that it uses friendly-URLs. For those of you that aren't familiar with CodeIgniter, all requests are routed through index.php in the project's root folder. So, in this case, it'd be domain.com/text/index.php. A request to the application would be sent like domain.com/test/index.php/somecontroller/method. What I'd like to do, is for any incoming request that is directed towards the /test/ folder, or some subdirectory therein I'd like it to appropriately rewrite the URL so the index.php isn't included. (As per the example above, it'd end up being domain.com/test/somecontroller/method) For any OTHER request, meaning anything that's not within the /test/ directory, I would like it to route the request to Wordpress. I would imagine it's a simple RewriteCond to make it check to see if the request is for the /test/ directory or a subdirectory therein, but I've no idea how to do it. Perhaps you can't have more than one set of Rewrite Rules per site. I will include the recommended mod_rewrite rules for each application.   • Why can't I get my Azure, WCF, REST, SSL project working? What am I doing wrong?

    I'm trying to get SSL, WCF and REST under Azure, but the page won't even load. Here are the steps I followed: 1) I mapped the www.mydomain.com CNAME to my azuresite.cloudapp.net 2) I procured an SSL certificate for www.mydomain.com and properly installed it at my azuresite.cloudapp.net hosted service project 3) I deployed my WCF REST service to Azure and started it. Below is my web.config configuration. The http (non-https) binding version worked correctly. My service URL, http: //www.mydomain .com/service.svc/sessions worked just fine. When I deployed the project with the web.config below, enabling SSL, https: //www.mydomain .com/service.svc/sessions does not even pull up at all.
