• Extracting user-friendly exception details in Java

  I've got a J2EE web application that I'm working on and when an exception occurs, I'd like to get some basic details about the exception and log it. The message that I'm logging should be pretty basic, something that might mean something to the people running the web server(s). Would using e.getMessage() be the best thing to log? Thanks.

I am aware of HTML, CSS and JavaScript (also jQuery and YUI) but I have never been able to master them so that I can develop efficient and maintainable solutions much quicker than how I do now. • Java applet needs permission but doesn't ask for it!

  I'm trying to connect a VPN connection (on Mac OS X 10.6.6) through a Check point java applet. The first time it ran I chose NOT to give it access to my files and such and now every time I try to lunch the applet it tells me too "Please confirm the use of this Java applet and then refresh or reopen the window." But I don't know how to confirm it nor delete the applet. How can I change the permissions afterwards and where can I find java applets installed on my computer? Update: This turns out to be a problem in Firefox. Cleared cookies, Java cache and certificate in Safari and it seems to work.

• Unable to regress web application from AJAX Control Toolkit 3.0 back to 1.0

  I was recently asked to stop using the Ajax Control Toolkit 3.0 in my application and need to go back to 1.0. Luckily I only have one calendar control which I don't believe will be affected by this. I have removed the reference to the 3.0 .dll and added a reference to the 1.0 .dll. But now, I see this: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassFormatError: Extra bytes at the end of class file blah/hooplah/fubar/nonsense/IndexId$Transaction From what I've looked up, Java 6 build 1.5 could fix it since it allows extra bytes at the end of class files (I think), but I would much rather use build 1.6. Any clear ideas on how this happened or how to fix it?

  I am having a hard time consuming a very simple (Hello World) WCF web service in my iPhone app. From what I have read, you must manually create the request message then send it to the web service URL. I was able to accomplish this on a .asmx web service, but not with a WCF service. How do I know the correct format of the request SOAP message? The web service I am trying to hit has a format of: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:PORT/IService1/ (running locally in a VM) I apologize for the lack of information, I am pretty lost.   Java has annotations and that is good. However, some developers feel that it is best to annotate code with metadata using xml files - others prefer annotations but would use metadata to override annotations in source code. I am writing a Java framework that uses annotations. The question is: is there a standard way to define and parse metadata from xml files. I think this is something every framework that uses annotations could benefit from but I can seem to find something like this on the Internet. Must I roll my own xml parsing/validation or has someone already done something like this?

The only change I did is changed the namespace in the reference from System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol TO Microsoft.Web.Services3.WebServicesClientProtocol After doing so, though the application is building properly.
