• TechEd 2012: Recap

  TechEd this week was a great experience and I wanted to wrap it up with a summary post. First let me say a thank you to John and Jeff from GWB for supplying power, connectivity and a place to work in between sessions.  The blogging hub was a great experience in itself.  Getting to talk with other bloggers and other conference goers turned into a series of interesting conversations.  And where else can you almost end up in the day 1 highlights video? The sessions at TechEd were a mixed bag of value.  The Keynotes rocked, both figuratively and literally and most of the sessions that I want to were a good experience and had gems of information to take away.  There were a few exceptions though.  A couple of the sessions turned out to be sales jobs.  Nothing turns me off more than that (there will be some really honest comments on those surveys). TechEd re-enforced for me that much of the value is not in the sessions, but in the networking opportunities. I got to talk with several Microsoft team members and MVPs as well as some of the vendor representative for companies like Inrule and ComponentOne. Also got to expand both my local and extended community with discussions at meal times and waiting for sessions to start. I think this is one of the benefits that a lot of people don’t take advantage of in these conferences that should be a bigger part of the advertising. Exposure to a wide variety of topics, many of which I had not been able to make time for up to this point was envigorating.  The list of topic includes: Office 365, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8, Metro, Azure.  I can’t wait to get back to work and dig into these subjects in more depth. The one complaint that I had and heard from other attendees was that there weren’t enough sessions that were actually about development.  I realize that TechEd started as an event for IT Pros, but there needs to be more value for the Devs.  It all went by too fast and it will take a couple more days to digest the material, but the batteries are and I’m ready to leverage what I’ve learned.  Hopefully we will do it again next year. del.icio.us Tags: TechEd,TechEd 2012

• How can I recover from a frozen app when connecting over VNC

  I have a htpc running 10.10. It has no keyboard or mouse attached, so I connect over vnc for administration and manual tasks. This usually works fine but every so often an app running in fullscreen mode crashes. All I want to be able to do is kill this app from VNC. Is there a keyboard shortcut to do this that will preserve the VNC connection? If I use CTRL + ALT + F1, I see the terminal but can no longer control it from VNC. Trying to return to the desktop doesn't work either? Any easy process I can follow?

• Multiple Monitors using nvidia-prime or bumblebee on Ubuntu 13.10

  I've been unable to get multiple monitors to work with Ubuntu 13.10 using nvidia-prime or bumblebee. Could someone point me in the right direction? With nvidia-prime, I've tried the xorg.conf here http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.12/README/randr14.html, but I boot into "low graphics" mode and have to revert to get a desktop back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: I've given up on nvidia-prime; I missed the fact that it never turns off the discrete card... So, I'm back to trying to get VIRTUAL displays working with Bumblebee.

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 Screen Resolution "Out of Range"

  I'm fairly new to ubuntu and have just installed Ubuntu Server 12.04 on a spare machine to experiment and play with! The installation went without problem, however whenever the OS boots the monitor displays a an error message saying the resolution is "out of range" and i can't see to do anything - i can wait as long as i like, but nothing appears. Ubuntu is the only OS installed so bypasses GRUB on boot, although the GRUB screen is also out of range if forced on startup. I can access a shell from the recover mode and i can get at a terminal through a LiveCD of the Desktop version but have had little luck with either. I've been trying to figure this out for days and i'm at a total loss. Any thoughts?

• How to adjust TouchPad edge scroll area in Ubuntu?

  I have an Acer Aspire that I have dual booting XP and Ubuntu. On the Windows side, the driver allows you to set how close your finger has to be to the edge of the TouchPad before it goes into scroll mode. In Ubuntu I don't have the option (at least in the GUI) to change the scroll area on the pad. Is there a conf file or other way to change this? I'm constantly getting into the scroll area during normal usage. I would like to leave it on without losing so much pad area to the scroll feature.

• Ubuntu will not start due to full partitions

  I left my computer downloading all the night and I did download 35 GB of movies (legal ...). I restarted the computed in the morning then I booted in my encrypted Windows partition for my work. I have left my computer downloading 35GB of files and when I restarted in the morning, I booted Windows. When I tried to access Ubuntu, it failed to boot and in low-graphic mode told me that it won't boot because the partition is full. I tried rescue and it reported 0 MB free. I also cannot delete files with sudo rm as all are impossible due to a read-only file system. I can mount it in Windows but there is a "write protection" there, also. Should I try a live USB?

• Regain Sudo rights after removing from admin group

  Hello, I accidentally removed myself from the admin group when editing the user. Now I can no longer use sudo. The error says: ber is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported. I booted up in rescue mode, but, when going into root prompt, it asks me for the root password. I don't have one, and providing with my own (first and only ubuntu-user) password, it won't allow entrance. My harddisk is encrypted, but only the /home/user part, not the entire disk, afaik. What can I do?

• Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

  I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

• Xubuntu, LXDE, USB Booting

  Welcome, My problem appeared today - I was using Xubuntu for a long time, but find out that LXDE should be faster than Xfce, so I installed it. After installing I followed tutorial for removing Xfce, cause disk in my computer is very small and I wanted to release some free space. I used command from this tutorial: How to remove xubuntu-desktop? but instead of remove I entered purge command… and rebooted at the end. And I uninstalled whole my things. The problem is in installing system again - it's old Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-GR250) and I have broken CD-DVD drive. It's possible to boot from USB? I can access recovery mode, will this help me? Please answer fast, because it's my brother computer, and his going to kill me if I won't fix this fast :(

• Profiling Startup Of VS2012 &ndash; YourKit Profiler

  The YourKit (v7.0.5) profiler is interesting in terms of price (79€ single place license, 409€ + 1 year support and upgrades) and feature set. You do get a performance and memory profiler in one package for which you normally need also to pay extra from the other vendors. As an interesting side note the profiler UI is written in Java because they do also sell Java profilers with the same feature set. To get all methods of a VS startup you need first to configure it to include System* in the profiled methods and you need to configure * to measure wall clock time. By default it does record only CPU times which allows you to optimize CPU hungry operations. But you will never see a Thread.Sleep(10000) in the profiler blocking the UI in this mode. It can profile as all others processes started from within the profiler but it can also profile the next or all started processes. As usual it can profile in sampling and tracing mode. But since it is a memory profiler as well it does by default also record all object allocations > 1MB. With allocation recording enabled VS2012 did crash but without allocation recording there were no problems. The CPU tab contains the time line of the application and when you click in the graph you the call stacks of all threads at this time. This is really a nice feature. When you select a time region you the CPU Usage estimation for this time window. I have seen many applications consuming 100% CPU only because they did create garbage like crazy. For this is the Garbage Collection tab interesting in conjunction with a time range. This view is like the CPU table only that the CPU graph (green) is missing. All relevant information except for GCs/s is already visible in the CPU tab. Very handy to pinpoint excessive GC or CPU bound issues. The Threads tab does show the thread names and their lifetime. This is useful to see thread interactions or which thread is hottest in terms of CPU consumption. On the CPU tab the call tree does exist in a merged and thread specific view. When you click on a method you get below a list of all called methods. There you can sort for methods with a high own time which are worth optimizing. In the Method List you can select which scope you want to see. Back Traces are the methods which did call you. Callees ist the list of methods called directly or indirectly by your method as a flat list. This is not a call stack but still very useful to see which methods were slow so you can see the “root” cause quite quickly without the need to click trough long call stacks. The last view Merged Calles is a call stacked view of the previous view. This does help a lot to understand did call each method at run time. You would get the same view with a debugger for one call invocation but here you get the full statistics (invocation count) as well. Since YourKit is also a memory profiler you can directly see which objects you have on your managed heap and which objects do hold most of your precious memory. You can in in the Object Explorer view also examine the contents of your objects (strings or whatsoever) to get a better understanding which objects where potentially allocating this stuff.   YourKit is a very easy to use combined memory and performance profiler in one product. The unbeatable single license price makes it very attractive to straightly buy it. Although it is a Java UI it is very responsive and the memory consumption is considerably lower compared to dotTrace and ANTS profiler. What I do really like is to start the YourKit ui and then start the processes I want to profile as usual. There is no need to alter your own application code to be able to inject a profiler into your new started processes. For performance and memory profiling you can simply select the process you want to investigate from the list of started processes. That's the way I like to use profilers. Just get out of the way and let the application run without any special preparations.   Next: Telerik JustTrace

  This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? • Has test driven development (TDD) actually benefited a real world project?

  I am not new to coding. I have been coding (seriously) for over 15 years now. I have always had some testing for my code. However, over the last few months I have been learning test driven design/development (TDD) using Ruby on Rails. So far, I'm not seeing the benefit. I see some benefit to writing tests for some things, but very few. And while I like the idea of writing the test first, I find I spend substantially more time trying to debug my tests to get them to say what I really mean than I do debugging actual code. This is probably because the test code is often substantially more complicated than the code it tests. I hope this is just inexperience with the available tools (RSpec in this case). I must say though, at this point, the level of frustration mixed with the disappointing lack of performance is beyond unacceptable. So far, the only value I'm seeing from TDD is a growing library of RSpec files that serve as templates for other projects/files. Which is not much more useful, maybe less useful, than the actual project code files. In reading the available literature, I notice that TDD seems to be a massive time sink up front, but pays off in the end. I'm just wondering, are there any real world examples? Does this massive frustration ever pay off in the real world? I really hope I did not miss this question somewhere else on here. I searched, but all the questions/answers are several years old at this point. It was a rare occasion when I found a developer who would say anything bad about TDD, which is why I have spent as much time on this as I have. However, I noticed that nobody seems to point to specific real-world examples. I did read one answer that said the guy debugging the code in 2011 would thank you for have a complete unit testing suite (I think that comment was made in 2008). So, I'm just wondering, after all these years, do we finally have any examples showing the payoff is real? Has anybody actually inherited or gone back to code that was designed/developed with TDD and has a complete set of unit tests and actually felt a payoff? Or did you find that you were spending so much time trying to figure out what the test was testing (and why it was important) that you just tossed out the whole mess and dug into the code?

• WIF, ADFS 2 and WCF&ndash;Part 1: Overview

  A lot has been written already about passive federation and integration of WIF and ADFS 2 into web apps. The whole active/WS-Trust feature area is much less documented or covered in articles and blogs. Over the next few posts I will try to compile all relevant information about the above topics – but let’s start with an overview. ADFS 2 has a number of endpoints under the /services/trust base address that implement the WS-Trust protocol. They are grouped by the WS-Trust version they support (/13 and /2005), the client credential type (/windows*, /username*, /certificate*) and the security mode (*transport, *mixed and message). You can see the endpoints in the MMC console under the Service/Endpoints page. So in other words, you use one of these endpoints (which exactly depends on your configuration / system setup) to request tokens from ADFS 2. The bindings behind the endpoints are more or less standard WCF bindings, but with SecureConversation (establishSecurityContext) disabled. That means that whenever you need to programmatically talk to these endpoints – you can (easily) create client bindings that are compatible. Another option is to use the special bindings that come with WIF (in the Microsoft.IdentityModel.Protocols.WSTrust.Bindings namespace). They are already pre-configured to be compatible with the ADFS endpoints. The downside of these bindings is, that you can’t use them in configuration. That’s definitely a feature request of mine for the next version of WIF. The next important piece of information is the so called Federation Service Identifier. This is the value that you (at least by default) have to use as a realm/appliesTo whenever you are requesting a token for ADFS (e.g. in  IdP –> RSTS scenario). Or (even more) technically speaking, ADFS 2 checks for this value in the audience URI restriction in SAML tokens. You can get to this value by clicking the “Edit Federation Service Properties” in the MMC when the Service tree-node is selected. OK – I will come back to this basic information in the following posts. In the same week I will be a speaker in an evening community event, MsBIP møde nr. 21, delivering the Power Query in Modern Corporate BI session that I also presented at TechEd North America 2014 last week. It’s not just a session about Power Query, there is a broader scope related to Corporate BI vs. Self-Service BI, which could be open to many consideration. I think that the two worlds can (and should) collaborate, instead of fighting against each other, especially when there is an existing investment in Corporate BI. I hope to meet many of you there!

• How can menu bars that require a right click be activated?

  I've noticed that NetworkManager only has a single, left or right, click menu and no longer has an About menu option to show it's splash screen. In fact all the top bar mini short cut icons have been amputated and crippled leaving them with no rights. This severely impacts on our custom aps., similar to FireFox bookmarks, which can no longer be right clicked to bring up a context menu. It is possible to disengage FF's File|Edit|... menu bar from the top by running it in safe-mode so the menu bar is resident in a window, restoring right clicks, but our aps. do not have "safe modes". How can right clicks in menu bars be restored? reference

• Hostapd to connect laptop to Android

  i am trying to set up my laptop as an access point for my Android to use WiFi, so i knew that ubuntu sets the network as Ad-Hoc which is not discoverable by android, So i tried the method explained here -which i found on many other websites- but when i run hostapd.conf this error appears : nl80211: Failed to set interface wlan0 into AP mode nl80211 driver initialization failed. • Cannot sleep/standby in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop i386 on my netbook (HP Mini 311c). I am unable to use the sleep mode. When I press the suspend button (or do sudo pm-suspend), the screen flickers but the computer does not power off. Even worse, the screen comes back up and I'm back where I left off. Hibernating does work (although it is not available in Power Management). I have to use pm-hibernate to make that work. I'm using the 3.2.0.20 kernel and Gnome 3.3.92 (Unity, especially compiz, is a resource hog). Before Ubuntu 12.04, I was using Mint Linux 12 with the 3.0 kernel and everything worked fine back then. Any help is much appreciated because this is driving me crazy.

• "mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth" error in VirtualBox

  I installed Ubuntu (from the 11.10 Alternate CD, selecting "command-line only" mode before installing) in Virtualbox (Mac OS X Lion host) like I've done numerous times before. Installation finished without any problems, and I rebooted into my new system. Got the splash screen, it loaded, and right where it should've given me a login prompt, I got (in orange) mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth. I can just hit control + alt (option) + F1 to get the login prompt on tty1, and the system acts normally. This happens on every boot. The disk has two partitions, a 250 MB /boot partition and a 99.75 GB encrypted partition. The encrypted partition has LVM on it. One volume group, 3 volumes (swap, / (root filesystem) , and /home. At first I thought the error was from one of the LVM volumes not mounting, but they are all accessible. It isn't a critical error, but it is annoying. Any ideas?

• Can't get into the admin console after migrating to new server

  I migrated my WordPress blog to a new server, and everything seemed to be working fine until it started giving me the error when entering the admin area: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4864 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/plugin.php on line 729 The line 729 has: $protected = array( '_wp_attached_file', '_wp_attachment_metadata', '_wp_old_slug', '_wp_page_template' ); I had installed the maintenance-mode, and I have suspicions that this is what broke the forum. If I remove the plugin it then gives another error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 19456 bytes) in /home/neworder/public_html/blog/wp-admin/includes/post.php on line 1158 And that line has: $content .= '<p class="hide-if-no-js">' . esc_html__( 'Remove featured image' ) . '</p>'; } I tried to restore the blog file-system from the old server and also to restore the database from the old server (2x), but still it gives me the same error. Oracle Database In-Memory will be generally available in July 2014 and can be used with all hardware platforms on which Oracle Database 12c is supported. This option will accelerate database performance by orders of magnitude for analytics, data warehousing, and reporting while also speeding up online transaction processing (OLTP). It allows any existing Oracle Database-compatible application to automatically and transparently take advantage of columnar in-memory processing, without additional programming or application changes.
