  • Multiple desktops in Windows

    I'm running a program that uses WatiN to automate file uploads to different websites. I currently run it on a machine that I remote into via the standard Remote Desktop Connection in Windows - once I start an upload, I go ahead and continue using my local machine. Soon, I'll be needing to run it locally. The problem is that it requires focus (which is unavoidable due to WatiN utilizing SendKeys) and I of course don't want to render my machine useless while it runs. So, my question: Is there any way to emulate the multiple desktops/workspaces that have been in many Linux distros for some time? I tried VirtuaWin to no avail. Alternatively, is there a way to remote into a machine from itself? Or is there some other means of creating a separate session on the same machine that does not steal focus? Running Linux is not an option, and a VM would be overkill.

  • opening a GUID usb stick in windows 7

    so I have a mac which I have files on. I put in a GUID formatted usb stick and dropped some files on to it. took the stick and plugged in to my netbook with win7. In Devices & Printers it shows up. It also appears in "safely remove hardware". no actual letter or device when i search for it in other ways. Question - how do I access the files of my GUID usb stick on my windows 7 netbook? thanks

  • Why might one hard disk perform slower than another?

    I have just bought two WD 3TB Reds (WD30EFRX) for a FreeNAS box and whilst doing burn-in testing it seems like one is consistently taking about 10% longer than the other. So far I've done: a dd read test of the whole device, a long SMART test and it's currently halfway through a badblocks -wvs. The second device is lagging behind the first on all of them. I'm running these commands on Debian stable in two Konsole tabs. Is there a reason this could be considered normal behaviour or is it worth running the tests independantly? They're both plugged in to the LSI 2308 (IT mode) on a Supermicro X10SL7-F.

  • Is it possible to boot already installed version of Ubuntu from within Win7, e.g. with a vm?

    I have both Ubuntu 12.10 and Win7 installed. I use the former mostly for scientific simulations and the latter for applications. The problem I came across with this configuration is that the simulations take quite a while, and I'm not satisfied enough with solutions like Wine to run the Windows apps while the simulation runs. I would rather not install the simulation programs again, since it took quite an effort. So, is it possible to boot the already installed version of Ubuntu from within Windows 7 via VirtualBox or or something else?

  • CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection [migrated]

    I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

  • Laptop HDD not mounting.

    I have a laptop with broken (shorted out) motherboard and a 640 GB HDD. I want to recover my data from the hard disk. Every time I connect the hard disk using an external casing, it is being detected in the disk management service but not visible in my computer, nor accessible through command prompt. The Hard Disk is functioning as I can feel the hard disk rotor working properly when connected using the casing. Also the LED on the hard disk is blinking, the data is there but i am unable to access the data. Someone please suggest me ways of using the hard-disk as a slave disk using casing.

  • 1TB HDD making strange noise (not a common one)

    I built a new PC some days ago, and everything seems perfect, except that the 1 TB HDD I cloned from my old 500 GB HDD is making a deep weird sound. First of all, every time I access the disk, I hear a deep sound, and when the PC is turning on, I hear some clicking (the rapid clicking is my mouse, I'm opening and closing folders to trigger the vibrating deep weird sound I'm describing). I'm using this 1TB disk for data mainly (I use a SSD as the OS). As background information, the disk is a seagate barracuda 7200 rpm which was RMAd and replaced with a refurbished one. Maybe the refurbished disks make these noises? should I worry about my data? (although the disk is working normal and passed a seagatetools short generic test? Thanks! But, all these problems are fixed in the latest versions of the drivers. To be safe, download the most recent version from the manufacturer's site and install it. HDDlife® supports only IDE and Serial ATA disks, but does not support RAID disks. IS it correct way?

I see that we have llvm-g++ and c-lang, but to me, a LLVM is something almost like Valgrind of a simulator, where instructions are executed on it, and I can write programs to instrument the running code / interrupt when certain conditions happen / etc ...     I need to implement searching for SD-cards in my program. Currently I'm using search for all removable devices like: searcher = New Management.ManagementObjectSearcher("\\localhost\root\cimv2", "SELECT DeviceId FROM Win32_LogicalDisk WHERE DriveType=2 AND Size>0"); But it find USB flash drives also. Is there a proper way to find SD-cards only? What I need is in general only drive letter for available SD-cards (like "F:" or so).

    I'm not sure how best to describe this (as you can clearly tell from the title) so I'll give you an example: I have a multisite Drupal installation. Each of the sites' sitemap.xml files are located on the server at /sites/example.com/files though with a browser (and to search engines) it is accessible at example.com/sitemap.xml I was wondering how this was achieved? Is this called Virtual Directory? Thank you

    hi, I have the following code inside the .h file and I'm not sure what does the assignment statement do and how is it called properly? virtual void yield() = 0; I thought that the function returns a value of 0 by default but since this function returns void I am a little bit confused.
