• Black Screen after installing recommended Nvidia drivers. What to do?

  New to Ubuntu. Problem description: Until recently I had Windows on my computer. My hard disk is divided into two partitions. On the first one (app. 10 GB) I had my Windows XP On the second one (app. 30 GB) I have some data I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on the first partition (the smaller one). Since I wanted to keep the data on my second partition, I chose the third install option. During the installation process I deleted the data on partition one, created a new partition with the same size, formatted it as ext4 and mounted / on it. The installation continued fine and at the end I restarted and took the CD out when it ejected automatically (it could have been also before the restart). Ubuntu started but I noticed that my computer was slow. Then a prompt appeared telling me that I did not have the optimal NVidia drivers and recommended to install a specific one. I clicked on the recommended driver, installation went apparently just fine and at the end I had to restart the system again. I did it, Ubuntu started, asked for my password, I typed it, pressed Enter, the screen turned black and remained like that (only the cursor was there and I could move it). I restarted and the same thing happened again. Has anyone had such a problem before and was able to solve it? With Windows I always installed drivers from CDs after installing Windows. Are the same CDs going to work for Ubuntu too or I should find special drivers? P.S. During the installation I was connected to the internet and I agreed on installing updates and the third party software. In the time before I installed that problematic but recommended NVidia driver I checked that there was between 6 and 7 GB free space on the first partition where I installed Ubuntu.

• Managing multiple ssh keys

  I have a lot of ssh keys, they are all passphrase protected and managed by ssh-agent. As a result of this, I am now getting "Too many authentication failures" on some connections. As has been explained on this site before, this is because ssh will try all keys the agent throws at it. The proposed solution is to use IdentitiesOnly in the config, together with an IdentityFile. While this indeed stops offering wrong keys, it seems it completely disables the agent in full, so now I have to type the passphrase on every connection. I could not find clear info about this. Does IdentitiesOnly just disable getting keys from ssh-agent in full? Or should it just block out the keys that aren't mentioned? • Mac terminal: Resource temporarily unavailable

  I'm getting an error message in the Mac Terminal when I try to run several different processes. I did some googling and looking on this site, and found out that it might be related to having too many processes running at one time. However, I'm getting these error messages when I only have a few windows open (much fewer than I was accustomed to having). Looking in activity Monitor, my %User number is at around 25%, and the %System number is around 15%. In the past, I have had both much much higher (until the people at the Apple store told me to keep an eye on it). • How can I convince my boss that ANSI C is inadequate for our new project?

  A few months ago, we started developing an app to control an in-house developed test equipment and record a set of measurements. It should have a simple UI, and would likely require threads due to the continuous recording that must take place. This application will be used for a few years, and shall be maintained by a number of computer science students during this period. Our boss graduated some 30 years ago (not to be taken as an offense; I have more than half that time on my back too) and has mandated that we develop this application in ANSI C. The rationale is that he is the only one that will be around the entire time, and therefore he must be able to understand what we are doing. He also ruled that we should use no abstract data types; he even gave us a list with the name of the global variables (sigh) he wants us to use. I actually tried that approach for a while, but it was really slowing me down to make sure that all pointer operations were safe and all strings had the correct size. Additionally, the number of lines of code that actually related to the problem in hand was a only small fraction of our code base. After a few days, I scrapped the entire thing and started anew using C#. Our boss has already seen the program running and he likes the way it works, but he doesn't know that it's written in another language. Next week the two of us will meet to go over the source code, so that he "will know how to maintain it". I am sort of scared, and I would like to hear from you guys what arguments I could use to support my decision. Cowardly yours,

• A new day has dawned in my SharePoint world.

  Until I started working with SharePoint, I never thought I would be blogging.  I am usually a pretty private individual, but this thing called the SharePoint community pulls you in and makes you feel like you should be a part of it, contributing to it and giving something back.  So here I am blogging for the first time – and so begins my tale. I started my work life as a Systems admin, but was given a chance to start working with SharePoint 2007 back in - ironically enough - January of 2007.  It has been downhill from there or uphill depending on your perspective!  I jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back.  Lucky for me Microsoft gave us a new version to work with.  A new job a couple years ago gave me the chance to work with that new version.  Now I spend my days weaving a tale of SharePoint for a Sales based organization. So why this blog?  To give something back. I spend most days toggling between administration, InfoPath, Branding and design, HTML, JQuery, and XSLT depending on the need.  The blog will detail these projects and solutions as best I can.  Hopefully they will be of use to someone who may be trying to accomplish similar things, just as many of the blogs that I have referenced over the last 5 years have been a huge help and resource for me.

• Running a script on startup before X starts in Ubuntu 9.10

  I have a script that I want to run at startup to switch X-configs depending on location, but I can't seem to find out where to put it in order to get it to run before X is started. This results in me having to restart X to get it to run the correct config. Currently, my script is located in /etc/init.d/whereami, with symlinks in /etc/rc[2-5].d/S25whereami. I was trying to find out when X is started, in case the problem is simply the 25, but I can't seem to find the answer... Any help is appreciated.

• Computer Software Needed

  A friend started my website with Frontpage 2000 in Oct04. I used it until 09 and started to use Kompozer. I am starting to have difficulty updating my picture pages. Some pictures never show up or show up as X. I'm not sure what the problem is. I haven't been able to figure out how to upload files to Filezilla either. Is there a software program similar to Frontpage and Kompozer that will allow me to do weekly updates/addition to my picture pages without recreating the whole page? I dabbled with Web Builder 8-Easy WebEditor-Expression Web and Pagebreeze.

• PHP5.3 FastCGI doesn't use global config's values

  There's a Centos6.3 system. Apache 2.2.15 + mod_fcgid + PHP 5.3.3 There's a problem with date.timezone value. It's mentioned in the global /etc/php.ini like this: date.timezone = "Europe/Moscow" And doesn't mentioned in user's local php.ini. As a result, I'm getting lot's of warnings like: Warning: date() [function.date]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'Europe/Helsinki' for 'EEST/3.0/DST' instead in ... Including the date.timezone parameter into the user's php.ini solves the problem, but I don't think, that it's the best solution. Maybe someone have faced this problem and can give an advice? Thanks! P.S. Creating /etc/php.d/timezone.ini with the timezone info aslo does nothing:(

• Resize2fs at 81h and counting

  Setup: 12x 1TB drives in a RAID6 (MDADM) crypt-setup running ontop of MDADM LVM running on the crypted drives EXT4 on the LVM Background: I added a new drive to the RAID (increasing from 11 to 12 drives), and 'bubbled' up through the layers (MDADM, etc...) to reizing the ext4 partition. This machine is used as a centralized repository for photography and as a backup server (for both Windows and Mac machines) so bringing it down to add the drive and wait for the resizing and everything wasn't really an option. So I started the resize operation several days ago. HTOP is reporting the resize2fs operation as running for 81h now. DMESG and syslog are both clear, and the drives are still accessable. The resize command reports it's started an online resize of the partition, so the process IS running, and it is burning through 100% of one of my cores. Question: Is it normal for the operation to take this long or has something gone horribly wrong? Where would I start looking for signs of trouble?

• Songbird very slow, freezes

  I've read on few places that Songbird is no good with more than some thousands of library items because it starts getting quite slow. Well, in my case (which is a clean install) I've imported 17k items (which I know is not that much) and instead of becoming just too slow it frequently gets to not responding for several minutes until getting back to its senses again. That's for whichever random operation such as deleting 1 item from library. I've also read on few more places that gives very little hope on fixing this issue, but I wonder... Is there any way to tweak it and make it work as fast as expected? Am I missing something or is the software just not intended for libraries with more than 10 thousand thingies?

• For what purpose I can use c++ to increase my skills?

  I want to learn new things. Initially I was a PHP programmer. Then I thought it was not enough. Then I started learning Java thing. It took me 3 months to learn. Java, J2EE, Spring, Hibernte, Spring Security, Spring Roo and many design patterns MVC and stuff like AOP, DI . I never knew that before but I got the idea what J2EE. After 3 months, I just made a simple page with Registration form integrated with Spring Security. I wanted to make one complete project in it but that was too much for me and I didn't want spend more time on it as then i need to host that as well so I left that. Then I started learning Python and made few sys admin scripts and then Django and now I am finishing a complete web app in Python. Now I want to learn C++, but before that I need to find out what i can do with it. Just like I know Python is very useful because I have my own servers so I can write scripting and websites so Python is good for me. But I am confused in which areas C++ can help me. I don't want to end up like I have with Java where either I have big projects or nothing for day to day use.

• One motherboard crashed. Changed and wants to crash again

  My computer started to freeze randomly. I was pretty sure it was the hard drive that was starting to fail. Before I could change it, the motherboard was completely dead. I bought the same one and reinstall it. Everything went working well until my computer started to freeze again and doing the same problem has before. I don't want my motherboard to burn again and I'm really wondering what can be the problem... Could it be the power supply or the video cards that burned the motherboard ? I tested the voltages of the power supply and they seemed fine... The computer worked as is for four years...   Does downloading the same torrent from more than one server increase the sources / seeds? edit: What I meant with servers is those like mininova, isohunt and the like. Now I know those aren't the trackers, what I want to know is if when more than one of those indexing sites are linked for the same torrent, if they likely contain different lists of trackers, so getting the torrent from both sites will increase the trackers, hence the seeds, or if it's just in case one of the sites goes down. I guess I can test this getting one torrent from one site with a torrent client and the same torrent, from another site with another client and comparing the list of trackers and the amount of seeders and leechers.

• Re-install (repair) Server 2012 Roles & Features

  Is there a way to re-install all Server Roles & Features in Server 2012? As far as I can see from Server Manager all that can be done is to manually remove each and then re-install but I am hoping that MS have provided some way of just repairing / re-installing all installed roles & features. Anyone know if there is a way of doing that? The reason for wanting to do this is that I have a Domain Server which after some recent MS updates has started causing numerous event log warnings & errors and has started behaving erratically. I know that System File Checker will check installed files but that will not fix any registry permissions problems, which is where I think problems have arisen. Guess what I am looking for is some way to recreate the whole registry and it's permissions but without doing a complete re-install. Thanks, Nick

• Sprite batching seems slow

  I have implemented a sprite batching system in OpenGL which will batch sprites based on their texture. How ever when I'm rendering ~5000 sprites all using the same texture i'm getting roughly 30fps. The process is as followed create sprite batch which also create a VBO with a set size and also creates the shaders as well call begin and initialise the render mode (at the moment just setting alpha on) call Draw with a sprite. This checks to see if the texture of the sprite has already been loaded and if so it just creates a pointer to the batch item and adds the new sprite coords. If not then it creates a new batch item and adds the sprite coords to that; it adds the batch item to the main batch. if the max sprite count is reached render will be called call end which calls render to render the left over sprites in the batch. and also resets the buffer offset render loops through each item in the batch and will bind the texture of the batch item, map the data to the buffer and then draw the array. the buffer will then be offset by the amount of sprites drawn. I have a feeling that it could be the method i'm using to store the batched sprites or it could be something else that i'm missing but I still can work it out. the cpp and h files are as followed http://pastebin.com/ZAytErGB http://pastebin.com/iCB608tA On top of this i'm also getting a weird issue where then two sprites are batched on after the other the second sprite will use the same coordinates as the last. And then when one if drawn after it is fine. One thread for 'logic', one for rendering, or more? 6 answers So I recently started learning Java, and having a interest in playing games as well as developing them, naturally I want to create game in Java. I have experience with games in C# and C++ but all of them were single-threaded simple games. But now, I learned how easy it is to make threads in Java, I want to take things to the next level. I started thinking about how would I actually implement threading in a game. I read couple of articles that say the same thing "Usually you have thread for rendering, for updating game logic, for AI, ..." but I haven't (or didn't look hard enough) found example of implementation. My idea how to make implementation is something like this (example for AI) public class AIThread implements Runnable{ private List<AI> ai; private Player player; /*...*/ public void run() { for (int i = 0; i < ai.size(); i++){ ai.get(i).update(player); } Thread.sleep(/* sleep until the next game "tick" */); } } I think this could work. If I also had a rendering and updating thread list of AI in both those threads, since I need to draw the AI and I need to calculate the logic between player and AI(But that could be moved to AIThread, but as an example) . Coming from C++ I'm used to do thing elegantly and efficiently, and this seems like neither of those. So what would be the correct way to handle this? Should I just keep multiple copies of resources in each thread or should I have the resources on one spot, declared with synchronized keyword? I'm afraid that could cause deadlocks, but I'm not yet qualified enough to know when a code will produce deadlock.

• iTunes for Ubuntu Studio

  I have finally gotten my old Mac HDD sorted out, and now I would like to know if anybody has either: a) a way to run iTunes without wine, as it did not work out well for me the last time I tried it, or b) any other media player that will sync with an iPod and, more importantly, use the same file system. When my Mac died, I started to get into open source. I bought a MacBook Air, only out of necessity. For almost two years now, I have not once backed up or synced my iPod. I am getting nervous that it may give up on it's life soon and would like to find a solution. I don't have enough room on my Air, and it would just erase my iPod anyway... Another thing that I am having trouble with is the way iTunes arranged the music. Now, it is arranged all by artist, then album, the song and I would like to have a media library, but somewhere around 400GB of music is a lot to sift through (I have attempted in the past). Thus I am looking for something that will use the same library format. A side note: As I was writing this I started to wonder; Is a Hackintosh in order here? If somebody will give me instructions on how to install MacOSX for free (maybe Mavericks?) in a dual boot with Ubuntu, I will be ever grateful. :) Thanks, soundblastdj

• how to find out what is causing huge dentry_cache usage?

  Note that inode_cache & ext3_inode_cache slabs are very small compared to dentry_cache. What happens is that slowly and steadily the within a week dentry_cache grows from 1M to ~5-6G Then I need to run echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches && echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches This started to happening one day on all servers hosting some web code - the developers are saying that they have not changed anything related to filesystem access pattern around the time then the problem started. The system is centos5 with 2.6.18 kernel so I don't have any instrumentation features available th newer kernels. Any I idea how I can debug the problem? maybe with systemtap? This is a ec2 instance - so not even sure that systemtap will work there. Thanks Alex

At bullet point 8 in that tutorial it shows this image, which is what I should be expecting when I build: However this isn't what I get when I build. I'm guessing I've set something up wrong here but I've just followed a tutorial 100% correctly!! If anyone could help I'd be very grateful! It has been like this since the release of xCode 3.2, assuming the apple dev center documents and tutorials etc are pre-3.2 as well. However some say its a known issue whereas others seem to think this was intentional. I for one would like both the extended console and in code messages, and I certainly do not like the "Command /bin/sh..." error and really think they would have documented such an update. Hopefully it will be fixed soon anyway. UPDATE: Here's confirmation it's something changed since the release of xCode 3.2.1. This image: is from my test build using 3.2.1. This one is from an older version (3.1.4): . (The project for both was unchanged).

• How do I explain this to potential employers?

  Backstory: TL;DR: I've gained a lot of experience working for 5 years at one startup company, but it eventually failed. The company is gone and the owner MIA. When I left sixth-form college I didn't want to start a degree straight away, so when I met this guy who knew a guy who was setting up a publishing company and needed a 'Techie' I thought why not. It was a very small operation, he sent mailings to schools, waited for orders to start arriving, then ordered a short run of the textbooks to be printed, stuck them in an envelope posted them out. I was initially going to help him set up a computerized system for recording orders and payments, printing labels, really basic stuff and I threw it together in Access in a couple of weeks. He also wanted to start taking orders online, so I set up a website and a paypal business account. While I was doing this, I was also helping to do the day-to-day running of things, taking phone orders, posting products, banking cheques, ordering textbooks, designing mailings, filing end of year accounts, hiring extra staff, putting stamps on envelopes. I learned so much about things I didn't even know I needed to learn about. Things were pretty good, when I started we sold about £10,000 worth of textbooks and by my 4th year there we sold £250,000 worth of text books. Things were looking good, but we had a problem. Our best selling product had peaked and sales started to fall sharply, we introduced add on products through the website to boost sales which helped for a while, but we had simply saturated the market. Our plan was to enter the US with our star product and follow the same, slightly modified, plan as before. We setup a 1-866 number and had the calls forwarded to our UK offices. We contracted a fulfillment company, shipped over a few thousand textbooks, had a mailing printed and mailed, then sat by the phones and waited. Needless to say, it didn't work. We tried a few other things, at home and in the US, but nothing helped. We expanded in the good times, moving into bigger offices, taking on staff to do administrative and dispatch work, but now cashflow was becoming a problem and things got tougher. We did the only thing we could and scaled things right back, the offices went, the admin staff went, I stopped taking a wage and started working from home. Nothing helped. The business was wound up about about 2 years ago. In the end it turned out that the owner had built up considerable debt at the start of business and had not paid them off during good years, which left him in a difficult position when cashflow had started to dry up. I haven't been able to contact the owner since I found out. It took me a while to get back on my feet after that, but I'm now at University and doing a Computer Science degree. How do I show the experience I have without having to get into all the gory details of what happened?
