• What is the maximum number of virtualhosts Apache can handle?

  Hello. What is the maximum number of VirtualHosts Apache can handle on a single machine (I don't mean anything related to load, let's suppose it's irrelevant for the question). And we take only Apache without any proxifying things like nginx. I am asking because on one forum one guy reported that his Apache works unstable with the number of sites more than 400 on a single machine. If you have a config, that handles more than 400, please tell me here. Thanks.

• Are newly installed fonts in an email going to be displayed properly on another computer?

  I have downloaded and installed a new font family (Gentium) on my machine. I want to use this font in some of my email correspondences. When I compose an email in Outlook 2007 with these fonts and send it to someone, is he going to be able to display it properly (I mean, with the same fonts, just the same as I can see the email)? I'm assuming the addressee doesn't have this font family installed on his machine. Does it matter if the addressee uses Outlook or a web-based email?

• kinit gives me a Kerberos ticket, but no AFS token

  I'm trying to setup access to my university's IT environment from my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04, by (mostly) following the IT-department's guides on AFS and Kerberos. I can get AFS working well enough so that I can navigate to my home folder (located in the nada.kth.se cell of AFS), and I can get Kerberos working well enough to forward tickets and authenticate me when I connect with ssh. However, I don't seem to get any AFS tokens locally, on my machine, so I can't just go to /afs/nada.kth.se/.../folder/file.txt on my machine and edit it. I can't even stand in /afs/nada.kth.se/.../folder and run ls without getting Permission denied errors. Why doesn't kinit -f [email protected] give me an AFS token? What do I need to do to get one?

• Get sessions' remote IP from Teamviewer log file

  I'd like to know who has logged in to my machine and when. I have two TeamViewer log files: Connections_incoming.txt and TeamViewer7_Logfile.log. The first one is quite plain and lists, as its name says, the incoming connections to the machine, reporting the local name of the remote host, login time, logout time, and some ids. e.g.: 173274362 MYLAPTOP 20-02-2012 17:32:16 20-02-2012 17:50:42 Master RemoteControl {C5AAE483-ED0B-54B8-9235-7AE597CAD342} This is almost all what I need, but unfortunately no remote IP address is reported here, so I checked for IPs in TeamViewer7_Logfile.log but it is really messy. It indeed contains some IP addresses but I can't understand which one is bound with the items in the first log file. Is there a way to interpolate the two logs to get what I need? Should I search the second file for some particular text? What do you suggest?

• unable to access shared drives n win7

  OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

• What's the ethos of the programming profession?

  I am one of those people who became professional programmer by chance, rather than by choice: I moved to a country whose main language I couldn't speak, I knew how to code... and here I am a few years later. Because of this I never really gave much a thought about the ethos of being a programmer, and working as a freelance I neither had many occasions to discuss this with fellow colleagues. Among others, Dictionary.com define the word ethos as follows: The fundamental character or spirit of a culture; the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society; dominant assumptions of a people or period. So my question is: How would you describe the ethos of being a programmer, and why would you say so? Please note that: my question is different than this and this other ones (although you might have chosen to become a programmer because of the programmer'ethos or you might think that part of the programmer ethos is about "programming being a meaningful profession"). beside the "how/what" part of the question, there is a "why" part too! :) I would appreciate if the answer could be based not only on the idealised vision of the hero-programmer, but also on real working and life experience. • Mountain Lion fails to connect to Windows share after the connection is interrupted

  I have a Windows 7 share that my Mountain Lion Macbook Pro connects to. The windows share is simply a user account. For whatever reason, when my connection gets interrupted, the mac will show a dialog stating as such and will ask me to ignore or disconnect. From this point forward, I cannot re-establish the connection from the mac to the windows share (even if I reboot the mac). I always have to reboot the windows machine in order for my mac to see the share again. My Windows share is my media center, so I'm not always able to reboot the machine because it is recording TV. Has anybody else encountered this problem and if so how is it resolved?

• How can I validate if a 13.10 update was complete?

  I attempted to upgrade Ubuntu 13.04 server to 13.10 tonight via the standard linux text console and it had some trouble. Machine boots and displays 13.10, but I am unsure exactly what or how much was successfully upgraded. Is there some command I can run which will validate that all system has all standard binaries upgraded to the 13.10 release? As for the issue .... everything seemed to be going along ok until the screen displayed some kind of menu option regarding local edits to samba config file. There was a prompt requesting root password or ctrl-d to continue, but it would not take any input. From another terminal screen I tried killing the process displaying this samba message, and then some screen/SCREEN processes. The hard drive activity picked up for a while and then all the processes on that pty were gone. As I said, reboot was OK, but I have no idea if everything was upgraded. The machine seems to be acting like normal, except that the upgrade killed my openpvn process which I'll need to reload. Thanks

• BT socket Device over Structured Cabling

  Not sure if this is the right stack* site to post on but I believe cabling is a just subject. Essentially I have a Credit Card machine which is connected to a phone line via standard BT Socket. So basically, the port of the wall has a balun plugged in which takes the RJ45 outlet on the wall to BT, so I can plug the device in. This works fine, however I need the machine to be on the other side of the room so want to route it through my patch panel (strucutered cabling). How can this be done? So Device -- ? -- RJ45 port -- Patch Panel -- ? -- Balun out wall outlet Where ? is to be filled in ! :)

  I am setting up a new server and there are some options. I want to perform some benchmarks and I need your help in determining the best tools and if possible run pre-configured benchmarks designed for SQL servers on Windows Server 2008/2012. Step 1. Run a performance monitor on the current Live SQL server (Windows Server 2008 Virtual machine running on ESXi. New server Hardware rundown: Intel® Server System R1304BTLSHBN - 1U Rack, LGA1155 http://ark.intel.com/products/53559/Intel-Server-System-R1304BTLSHBN Intel Xeon E3-1270V2 2x Intel SSD 330 Series 240GB 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s 25nm 1x WD 2TB WD2002FAEX 2TB 64M SATA3 CAVIAR BLACK 4x 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM There are several options for configurations and I want to benchmark some of them and share the results. Option 1. Configure 2x SSDs at RAID 0. Install Windows Server 2008 directly to the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Store Database files on the RAID 0 Volume. Benchmark the OS direct on the hardware as an SQL Server. Store SQL Backup databases on the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Option 2. Configure 2x SSDs at RAID 0. Install Windows Server 2012 directly to the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Install Hyper-V. Install the SQL Server (Server 2008) as a virtual machine. Store the Virtual Hard Disks on the SSDs. Option 3. Configure 2x SSDs at RAID 0. Install VMWare ESXi on a partition of the 2TB WD Caviar HDD. Install the SQL Server (Server 2008) as a virtual machine. Store the Virtual Hard Disks on the SSDs. • Windows Hosted Network Redirect to IIS

  I would like to setup a Windows 7 machine as a wifi hotspot that always redirects to the IIS web hosting on the same machine. I have the hotspot piece working with the built in hosted network of Widnows 7. The webhosting was easy enough with IIS. Now, how do I connect the 2? The idea is to have a standalone device that users will be able to connect to the wifi and any webpage they go to will redirect to the internal webpage. I only expect 1 or 2 users at a time and there won't be any internet access involved.

• SharePoint Server Farm, what to do with an old server?

  Hi there, so we've procured a monster of a SQL Cluster and 4 screaming fast machines running the apps/WFE to start up our MOSS 2007 Enterprise Server farm, however I've got one server from the old server farm configuration that was just re-imaged and is still running decently, it's a 32 bit machine where the others are 64 bit machines so it really can't serve the same role as a 64 bit machine. I'd like to see if there's a role for it somewhere in the farm, a few thoughts: --Dedicated Search Query Server --Dedicated Excel Services Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? What did they do?

• Actually utilizing relational databases for entity systems

  Recently I was researching several entity systems and obviously I came across T=Machine's fantastic articles on the subject. In Part 5 of the series the author uses a relational schema to explain how an entity system is built and works. Since reading this, I have been wondering whether or not actually using a compact SQL library would be fast enough for real-time usage in video games. Performance seems to be the main issue with a full blown SQL database for management of all entities and components. However, as mentioned in T=Machine's post, basically all access to data inside the SQLDB is done sequentlially by each system over each component. Additionally, using a library like SQLite, one could easily improve performance by storing the entity data exclusively in RAM to increase access speeds. Disregarding possible performance issues, using a SQL database, in my opinion, would allow for a very intuitive implementation of entity systems and bring a long certain other benefits like easy de/serialization of game states and consistency checks like the uniqueness of entity IDs. Edit for clarification: The main question was whether using a SQL database for the actual entity management (not just storing the game state on the disk) in a real-time game would still yield a framerate appropriate for a game or even if someone is aware of projects that demonstrate SQL in a video game.

• Trusted Root certificates regularly disappear on Windows 7

  I've installed several self-signed certificates on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine for development purposes. One was installed into Trusted Root CAs and 2 were installed into My Certificates and Trusted People. Every day or two the certificate installed into Trusted Root CAs disappears and I have to re-install it! This is annoying the hell out of me. Why is it happening and how do I stop it? The other certificates (installed into other stores) do not disappear. My first thought was some kind of Group Policy, but my machine is not part of a domain - though it does obtains its IP address from a corporate DHCP server, so I'm not sure if they can somehow still manage to apply Group Policy to me.

• SSL FTP fails on Windows 7 but not Windows XP clients

  We currently use a free SSL-FTP client called Move-It-Freely to transmit data from a custom data entry program at over forty facilities scattered around the state to our central server. Under XP, it works flawlessly. Some facilities have upgraded to Windows 7. On these machines, uploads (transfers to us) work, downloads (transfers from us to them) fail. Replacing the Windows 7 machine with an XP machine solves the problem. We have also verified that the network firewall settings have not changed. This problem persists even if Windows firewall is not running. We were able to remote into one of the Windows 7 machines to verify that the Windows firewall was indeed turned off. We cannot replicate the problem on our own Windows 7 machines, and are at a loss of how to fix this feature for our customers. The data contain health-related information, and needs to be encrypted (hence SSL-FTP.) Despite hours spent on Google, we cannot find a solution.

• Migrating Forms to Java or ADF, the truth and no FUD

  The question about migrating Forms to Java (or ADF or APEX) comes up time and time again.  I wanted to pull some core information together in a single blog post to address this question. The first question I always ask is "WHY" - Forms may still be a viable option for you so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, its going to be a considerable effort and cost to migrate from Forms to something else so the business is going to want to know WHY you spend all those hard earned dollars switching from something that might have been serving you quite adequately. Second point, if you are going to switch, I would encourage you NOT to look at building a Forms clone.  So many times I see people trying to build an ADF application and EXACTLY mimic the Forms model - ADF is NOT a Forms clone.  You should be building to the sweet spot of your target technology, not your 20 year old client/server technology.  This is also the chance for the business to embrace change, so maybe look at new processes, channels and technology options that weren't available when you first developed your Forms applications. • Firefox 4 is displaying all text as "bold"

  I installed Firefox 4 this morning excited to checkout some of the new HTML 5 features that have been implemented and found that all text was displayed in a bold font. Here is the comparison with what Firefox 4 is displaying on my machine and Chrome. It is getting really annoying. So far I've... Emptied the cache/history/etc. Re-installed the various core fonts (Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, etc.) Checked the font defaults in FF4. The interesting part to me is that I had FF3.6x on this machine with no problems whatsoever and now this. Any ideas? System Description Windows 7 (x64) Update I just found out that this is happening in IE9 (final) as well. Must be something with the system fonts. Like I said before, this wasn't happening pre-FF4.

• Using a non-validated SED on a Dell R720

  We were given a Dell R720 a couple years ago, and the machine currently has standard 300GB 3.5" SAS 15k drives. Our RAID controller is a Perc H710. We need to update our disks to FIPS 140-2 certified SED. According to Dell, they have only one tested/validated FIPS SED for this machine/controller, but it is a 7200rpm 3.5" unit. I'm showing that Dell offers a 600GB 15k FIPS SED in 3.5" configuration (Dell part number 342-0605), but they say they haven't validated or tested to know if it works. They informed us that we would not void our warranty in using this non-validated drive. How likely is it that our R720 with H710 controller will work with the non-validated drive? Are there significant differences in how drive manufacturers build SED that would prevent them from working consistently across different controllers?

• Win8 Change A Password

  I have a non-domain machine that I use with our company's domain resources regularly. I upgraded to Windows 8, and the "Change a password" option went away from the Ctrl-Alt-Del window. Can't seem to google anything about this subject, or find a way to access that password change dialog. I tried running the .reg file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63014-ctrl-alt-del-screen-add-remove-change-password.html with no luck. I also tried to Disable "Remove Change Password" via gpedit.msc. I could do it from my domain laptop, but I like to do it on this machine because it updates all my saved copies of those credentials. My local account is tied to my hotmail account if that matters.

It show me the following error: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain

• administraitor denies command prompt

  I looked at the command prompt faqs on this webiste and tried to get me to make a new profile but when i went to open it it said "The command prompt has been disabled by your administraitor-click any key to countinue" and when i do it closes which i knew that was going to happen. Is there someway i can stop the admin from blocking my command prompt? oh and i was at school too (Dont know if this helps but i am in the West Allis West Milwaukee school district). Also, is there a way i can hack into the blocking program for my school at all? I don't remember what the program is but it might have to do with vision? I'm not sure but it would be greatly appreciated if someone could help (could i download a program on a flash drive that denies any blocking and/or disabling SafeSearch and plug it in into a computer at my school and use it from the flash drive? Would the school blocking thingy deny it from working?) HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

• How can I increase the size of a Windows 2003 NTFS partition?

  Hi everybody! I have a very important server running Windows Server 2003 and my System partition is becoming too small, it's slowing down the machine. I have already tried all the cleaning stuff and transferring some "unimportant softs" on the "Saves" partition but it didn't help much at all. Is there a way to re-partition my hard-drive that will work on a 2003 Server, that's not too expensive and that could be used without turning the machine off. If there is no other way, then I'll have to reinstall the OS, but it will have to wait for the weekend. Thanks for your suggestions.

• Best way to keep configuration for server reinstallation?

  I have a server at home running Ubuntu 12.04 which has grown messy over the years. I have fiddled with various packages, desktop environments (for VNC) etc. and I would like to reinstall it to start again, and have better control over what goes into the box. But I want to keep much of the configurations after reinstallation, like LVM configuration, apache2, samba, etc etc. There would ideally exist a program which could analyze /etc, installed packages and such, store the information, and selectively put it back into the new installation. I am even considering installing Ubuntu server on a virtual machine, just to be able to compare the contents of /etc with a clean installation, and even perform a migration to the virtual machine first, to verify that the transfer process works. How do one go about performing this kind of reinstallation? Have anyone seen any resources on the net on the topic?

• I can't do a Remote Assistance session to a Windows XP box from Windows 7.

  My Mom's computer is running Windows XP, and my desktop running Windows 7. She's having some technical issue, so I want to do a Remote Assistance session to her machine. However, no matter what I've tried, the Remote Assistance program doesn't connect successfully. I've verified that the Windows Firewall (on both my and her machines) is configured properly to allow Remote Assistance program to go through. What's interesting is that I have the same problem when I try to do Remote Assistance from my desktop to my laptop, which is also running Windows XP. However, when I try to connect to my girlfriend's machine, which is runninng Windows 7 this time, the connection is successful. So in the end, I guess there must be some incompability between Windows 7 and Windows XP. Does anyone experience the same issue? How did you resolve it?
